I know but I ask sinse some i9000 ics modems default to 850 like jk4 and jl2
I'm getting reasonably good service on this modem (Tmobile outside Seattle)
Haven't used it long enough to say how it compares to some others, but so far so good.
Decent signal and clarity.
Your welcome guys glad I could help out
XXJW4 is the i9000 release, probably will not have 850mhz on by default.
Most of the 850mhz that works reasonably well in North America are starting with UG.

Sweet! I'll definitely watch this for feedback and then probably flash it later today. HSUPA is working for you? On the other roms in this forum with HSUPA I've had varied experiences. My upload speeds in particular were really inconsistent.

ok its done and ready for upload..sorry about that wait. dropbox takes forever for me for some reason.
tried it already but without reoriented kernel. I thought that if this has the voodoo lagfix it won't work with reoriented as that one is not patched for ext3/4 (if someone knows something else please tell me).
it was pretty fast and the theme is pretty nice.one of the nicest i've used.

your right voodoo will not work with reorient. i didnt want to use the kernal that came with it because i didnt want it to cause any problems with buttons and recovery and all that. so with the reorient kernal everything works, can still get into recovery and download with regular button combo, but voodoo does not work yet until excaliberinhand puts it in his kernal

And 850 band voice and data?
They never seen to quirk right in hsupa.
dont know since i dont use bluetooth at all. check the reorient kernal thread since that what you would be using. but i think this is the same kernal being used in dg's cog 8.1 and i think it said on his download page that this kernal does have some kind of problems with wired bluetooth controls.

yes its the jpm modem which i have found to be the best out of all of them
i just checked and it has every gsm 850 900 dcs 1800 pcs 1900 wcdma 2100 1900 900 and wcdma 850 you have to dial *#2263# then select COMBI the put a check next to wcdma 850 then menu and back..this will enable the 1 band that is not by default all the rest are already enabled.
Any screenshots. that would be nice.

You can have 3G only by using the settings menu and not the widget
I don't use the widget. I keep 3G on in the settings, but all I get is H/3G flashing on status bar from time to time with H staying there for good.
Since "H" is better form of "3G", it looks ok.

XG3 modem. Finally a modem that seems TO fix all issues like data connection lost, 3g,h,h+ troubles, modem hang up while calling with low signal and many other.
In the past, looking a webpage or using xda app was always return, retry, return, until the page was loaded fully.
Now seems to be zero latency modem.
I must test if the modem will prefer 2g in low reception or if will try instead to keep 3g I'f data connections are required.
What do you think about this modem?

Thank God, I live in Italy too finally a modem that made my phone usable to call and to navigate. I've got the Desire Hd before and my data connection was perfect, with Sgs it was a bit disappointing, now it's better.
I have H3G italy as carrier
This is great news!!! My only gripe was the poor wifi signal. Anyone know if that's improved too. I am going to test myself but i have 6 hours remaining on the download. Wish it'd hurry up!!!!
Just wanted to report that the kg3 modem seems to have fixed my problems, as well, and I'm in the Philippines on Smart telecom. Now if only I could fix the carrier itself, somehow...
What ROM's and kernels are you guys running with the new KG3 modem ??
I'm on VR2.1 with Ninphetamine-2.0.1 kernel, currently on KG2 modem.
Not having any major issues, just some drain on one of my exchange apps.

Cheers!!! Wifi still not fixed then cos i'm on the KG3 modem.
What exactly is your problem with wifi? If it's low signal strength, I think that's just the GS2 under-reporting the connection strength. Even when it says I have only 1-2 bars of wifi signal, the connection is still fast.
Modem has nothing to do with WiFi signal. That's in the PDA part of the firmware. It will only affect 2G/3G/3G+ strenght and call reception.
That's something I've learned on XDA when I had the first Galaxy S.
Hi,
I have started this thread as I haven't seen any discussion forum which gives us a review on the modems being used in India.
I have tested quite a lots of modems and here are my reviews on each of them.
1. JW4 - battery life was good, lots of drops in network
2. KB3 - battery was draining like a hell in 3-4 hours almost 60-70%
3. KF1, ZSJPG, JVT- all are balancing the battery life and good network speed
4. BUJP5 - currently testing since yesterday night, amazing network speed and good battery life.
I have tested all the modems being on ICS and using them on 3g almost whole day and remaining being on WiFi.
If anyone of you came across any new modem, please post the link of the same and I will try to use it provide you the review for it (no ETA please)

Thanks to RITZYtheDEVIL for the suggestion
Lets do it in a professional way and this information will be helpful for new members coming over xda from India.
Install the app 'Network Signal Info'.
Open the app and press Menu key -> Log Mobile -> Log every 10 seconds -> Enable log file.
Press Menu key -> Screen Timeout -> 5 Minutes.
Now you have to keep your phone like this for 5 Minutes. make sure the screen stays awake and DO NOT TRY TO CLOSE/MINIMIZE THE APP. Keep it in foreground.
During these 5 Minutes it is advisable that you walk around a little bit with your phone, go into different rooms and if possible even go out of your house. Basically, don't keep standing at one place.
Press Back key -> 'YES' to exit.
Now connect your phone to PC -> in internal SD card go to folder "NetworkSignal" -> open the file in 'MS Excel'.
Enter your information in the form by 'Open Form'
If you want to view/copy all the responses in a spreadsheet then 'Open Responses'
The Google doc linked above is public and it will stay there forever, so don't worry about it. Please help make the list grow.
Kindly have a try on JVU

Sure i will test this too and will update the op.
Did you tried it on ics as the link you provided is on custom rom 2.3.6
I9000 powered by RemICS-UX
UCKF1 — Signal ranges between -70 dBm to -85 dBm. Battery life good.
DDJV5 — -60 dBm to -80 dBm. Battery life good.
XXJVU — -50 dBm to -80 dBm. Excellent Battery Life. Best modem in my opinion.
XXJVT — Same as XXJVU.
I have noticed the XX series so far has given the best signal reception and battery life.
Please note, if you are using a 3G network in India, signal reception would be average everywhere. And the signal would keep fluctuating between 3G and 2G. Hence, hardly all 5 bars.
The above readings have been done on 2G network mode.
A very important thing:
Most people think the modem is the primary drainer of the battery. It's NOT. You have to use a good kernel too. I have used a variety of kernels on CM9 and have figured out that Semaphore is the best kernel. Devil3 is the next. Stock kernel sucks for battery life.

No, I haven't tried XXJVU modem with an ICS rom. When I was using an ICS rom, I went with the default modem that came with it. Never did experiment much with custom rom's.
Edit: Apurv24's post carries the link to it - XXJVU - the 2nd one; appears to be listed under ICS. I'm not sure about the risks and compatibility either.
No prob i will give it a try.

So far I have noticed XXJVU gives the best signal reception almost all over India. I'm from Pune.
I have traveled and used my SGS with ICS and XXJVU all over India(North, East and South) apart from my home town Pune and have got excellent signal reception (-50 dBm to -75 dBm).
Please note that this is over a 2G network of Vodafone. I also have a 3G plan but when I shift to the 3G networks the signal reception starts fluctuating and gives a horrible 1 or 2 bars.
If you are going to use 3G networks in India, you will face issues with signal reception. Most cities in India have horrible 3G connectivity—metros included.
All in all, XXJVU gives me excellent 2G coverage all over India on my SGS i9000 with ICS and Semaphore kernel.
Battery usage is decided by a lot of factors apart from the modem—Kernel plays a major role in battery usage too.

Are you on the stock ROM? If not, that might be the issue (because of the modifications made to it something could've gone wrong in that specific ROM.) You could also attempt to use Phone Info from the play store if it simply just doesn't work in the dialer. There's not many people that have issues doing this, so it could be that you might just have to reset your phone if all else fails.

Just Tried it again on CFX SR1 W/ brixked 0.6 and got an FC. I got it stock as well.
But from what ive heard you will not kick into HSPA+ mode until you put a strain on your conection. IE: Idling/web browsing/facebook will not bring you up to HSPA:15 (you can check you HSPA Channel in the settings--->about phone--->Status and then look at mobile Network Type). Knowing that i live in a well covered area i was upset that i couldnt get full 42mbps. But as my research and expereince has shown i can get it, just only when its necessary.
NOW, im not a wireless tech, im not even a rocket scientist, but i have done alot of reasearch and the data matches my hypothesis so ill lay it out for everyone to tear apart.
HSPA+ 42M works by using a Dual Carrier signal, which of course uses a bit more power than a single carrier. So even if you have a perfect -0dbm signal strength, you will only see HSPA:10 [ aka 21mbps ] in your network type. BUT, if you put a load on your connection ( in my case i took a multi hundred meg file into dropbox and then downloaded it) you will see the speeds increase signifigantly past the first little bit of data transfer, and if your are quick about it or cook up some sort of widget or overlay you can see the phone kick up to "high gear" and use the HSPA:15 channel.
i have also seen this in effect with larger apps. For instance the Ingress update that i got earlier today downloaded in these steps: 756k - 1.3Mb - 3.5mb installing. in ~ 10 seconds.
tl;dr Phone idles in low speed mode, goes to high speed when needed.
So if you want to test for yourself and have a bit of data left on your account (in 3 test i burned ~ 250MB) start a big download and then quickly switch to a view of the network type.

In this thread, we are talking about changing TMobile 3G bands: 1700 (current) and 1900(new, refarmed). We are not talking about HSPA, HSPA+, etc.
Mine FC's as well. I'm unlocked and rooted only

Well no one has a solution or an actual idea about what the problem is so I guess we will just be waiting x amount of time for a fix. Maybe a ROM dev can look into this and fix the issue because it'd be really nice to use the new 1900mhz bands. Can someone do a log cat and see what the issue is? No laptop ATM.
