I really don't see the need to start from scratch. I would simply make a CWM backup, flash a new partition size, flash the updated ROM then use CWM to 'restore data partition'. Either this, or use Titanium backup and then restore. Many people recommend full wipes when it is completely unnecessary unless you are experiencing major problems with your phone. It can in fact lead to bad blocks after a while from what I've read.

Sorry its been a while since I set up my phone, how do i flash the new partition size?

Before you flash, make sure to do a Titanium backup at the very least.
It's quite simple, connect the phone to your PC via the USB Flasher mode in MAGLDR, then either use the HD2 NAND Toolkit or a CWM folder to repartition. The NAND toolkit is self explanatory once you launch it, and if you download CWM v5.0.2.6 then enter the folder and find the file flash.cfg (not flash.cfg.txt) and open it with notepad, edit the system partition to the correct size, save it and finally flash with DAF.exe.

Thanks that all went great, however im not sure if this should be the case, i updated to 1.5 and for some reason the menu doesn't have reboot or power off options, how am i supposed to turn off my phone now?

[Please Help] Looping boot screen

Hi all,
A few months ago I rooted my magic and intalled a hero theme one of the JAChero ones, i believe.
Anyway, while in the phone I selected 'Restore factory settings' from within the options menu. The phone reset and now when it boots it just loops the HERO start up screen over and over.
I have still have the update.zip file I used and all the Nandroid backup stuff - but I don't know what to do with them.
Can anyone help?
normally formatting your sd card back to fat/ext/ls is a quick fix for this issue

update.zip: is just for when you install the rom, once you installed it now it is stored on your device so you no longer need a copy of it on your sd card,
I would personially save that to your computer though incase something like this happens and you dont have a backup but want the same rom then you dont need to search for it, you can simply put it back on your card, wipe, install
nandroid: is the copy of your phone the last time you hit the "backup" button in your recovery screen, you want to leave that on the root of your sd card (where it is now) so that if your phone ever gets messed up you can boot into recovery and do a "restore" (this is why you should always and only do a backup of a rom that is working and that you are happy with )
Hi,
Okay, firstly i've formatted the SD card to FAT/EXT and it's still happening.
I haven't done this in a long time... If I want to restore the phone to the backup do I need to use ADB?
If I boot into recovery mode I get the following options:
reboot system
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
Then at the bottom it says E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Thanks in advance.

your using a hero rom correct? so I'm hoping you just mistyped that because to start your sd card needs to be partitioned to [ FAT32 / EXT2 / Linux Swap ]

No as long as you did a backup and still have the nandroid folder on the root of your sd card, you should be able too boot into recovery, then choose "Nandroid Restore" it should be right under "Nandroid Backup" the one you chose to make the backup in the first place

What recovery img are you using? their normally is a build number somewhere on there [ i.e. Build: RA-magic-v1.2.3H ]
also heres a link to amon's recovery, their s a screen shot at the bottom of the first post of what that recovery looks like and those are the options you should have
RA V1.2.3
Right, I'm going INSANE!
It is a 32A device, so does the card need to be partitioned? Is there a way to partition the card in that way? REMEMBERING i can't do it via an app on the phone as the bloody thing won't get past the Hero boot screen.
I don't have the option to do a 'Nandroid Restore' - I think i used a Daldroid recovery image.
When I plug in the phone via USB, windows recognises it as 'Android 1.0' and won't let me install any USB drivers!!
Right, I can boot the Amon RA recovery image from fastboot.
I've tried fixing the partition of the SD card, but it's still looping.
Can I just flash another ROM now, or would that mess things up?

na you can ive had it happen to me a few times the first time re-formatting the partitions worked and second time it didnt so i just flashed again and it works fine...
if you like the rom your using you could try flash the same one maybe something messed up during the install or you could just flash a whole different one
either way the direction i would go would be
first: format the card to fat32/ext2/ls
second: do a wipe
third: flash
hope that works out for ya

you wouldnt be able to use an app to partition anyway so that doesnt really make a difference but if your going to flash another hero i would use these directions to partition your card and also make sure your card is a class 6 (you can tell by the # inside the circle on the card (not the size i.e. 8gb but there will be a circle with a (2),(4),(6) like that))

Dft vs cwm

CWM doesnt seem to work for me. Why do more cooks just do DFT?
Because its easier, and works for 99% of people if you follow directions, and also wrong section for this post.
actually just to thorw my thoughts there. i perfer DTF. i find it kind of disappointing that theres alot of CWM but not of DFT going on.
DEV's please do DFT along with your CWM!!! thank you
And to add to the posts above mine, flashing via cwm is standard on Android phones....
Cwm is way better imo. You need to use selected partitions with each build type. I say make em all flashable through cwm.
I don't get why some have issues with CWM. It's SO much simpler to use in long term operations or if you're a flashoholic. If you say it doesn't work for you, obviously you've done something wrong. Most of the time, it's all a question of having the right partition sizes. If you want ALL ROMs to be compatible, simply flash the 400Mb CWM partition layout and use App2SD+ if you have a leo. If you're a Gingerbread type of guy, flash the 150mb partition size and you're set! Personally what I do is 30mb cache, 120mb system and the rest for data.
Also, some people have issues with CWM because they most likely have issues with their flash. Easiest way to recover is to flash a stock WinMo ROM, restore SPL, format SD card and start all over again.
These forums have TONS of information on how to use CWM and get it up and running, so I don't get it...
yh I like CWM better. Just much neater I think.
Just my opinion
Plus you don't even need a computer. Also if your applying a theme and it messes up, you can just flash your recovery. Dft if you mess up you have to start over.
maybe the reason why i have not tried the CWM is beacuse of the partions stuff. i really dont get it.... and i have gotten fast at setting up ym phone. all my usefull apps are backed up on a box.net account just download and install. no problem. so yeah.
DFT all the way, until sooner or later all of them will be CWM and ill have to change over to it eventually... btu int he mean time DFT!
CWM..........it is!!
CWM is definatly easier. I will admit I was reluctant at first to switch from DFT. Old habits die hard I suppose. But now I can download a new rom and flash it from anywhere. And the backup is awesome to have!! Besides the roms are usually easier to put together for the dev's too. However, the one drawback, IMHO, is different roms require different partition sizes. If CWM were flashable from magldr, or a one size fits all standard were created this would eliminate the need for a pc connection all together.
Clockworkmod benefits=
1. You can make a FULL backup
2. You can make a FULL restore
3. You can wipe each individual part (data, system, sd-ext etc.)
4. You can flash other mods very easily
5. You can do EVERYTHING from your phone including download & flashing the ROM
6. You can wipe dalvik cache and normal cache to save space
7. You can format or partition your SD-card
8. You can store as many ROM's on your SD card to flash at a later time as you want
9. Which is most important!! you can update to a newer version of your favorite ROM without losing ONE THING!!
10. You can fix permissions and wipe battery stats
These are just 10 things I just thought of on the top of my head lol. I think most people don't like it because they haven't gave it long enough of a chance. If your coming from another Android device like me that had Clockworkmod then you couldn't live without it!! I can't think of ONE reason that MAGLDR builds are better than "flashable zips". This is just my opinion
@moto +1 - my man!
About partitions..... only thing u need to know about it is....
Look at the rom u want to flash. You need to know the size of it after it is unzipped. Think of your phone as a box. And your rom as what u want to get in the box. Your not going to fit a sense rom in a 150 mb. partition "box" because its just to big 200+mb. So get a bigger box. Use the 400mb box. If you have a non tmobile hd2 u will need more space to pack your apps and userdata into. Your rom is the first thing in the box and its already almost full, so once your phone starts packing your apps and userdata into the box it gets full really fast. This is where apps2sd and sdcard partitions come into play, think of it as strapping a smaller box ontop of your 400mb box and shipping for the same price. Basically make sure your box (partition) is big enough to fit all your **** in. Easy cheesy!!!!

It's all a conspiracy, the devs all got togehter and said if they only build CWM builds then bigdookie won't be able to flash any of the builds LOL
Seriously though, CWM is so easy to use (besides the benefits pointed out by motoman) - especially if you're on magldr 1.13 - just decide what partition size you need for your zip rom (usually specified in the rom thread) and flash it - you even get to use DAF to flash the partition, so you shouldn't have any problem
To access CWM, in magldr menu go to AD Recovery and you are in Recovery mode.
I just started using CWM and love it,my main question is this. if i try a rom i like, get it all set up and working, and then make a backup in cwm, do i need to keep the copy of the zipped rom on my card, or is the backup enough?
along those same lines, if i try a second rom, and then get it set up and do a backup, can i just restore from the previous roms cmw backup file, or do i have to reflash the previous rom and then do the restore?
just curious, cuz i like trying different roms, but i want to keep a "safety" restore point no matter what rom i switch to.
I hope this makes sense?
Thanks in advance.

The backup will contain everything you need to do a full restore. You can trash the zip of the rom. If you need it again for some reason just download it again. You can have as many different backups as your sdcard can hold. They are saved in the clockwork folder by date and time. By the way your sdcard will fill up fast doing 4 or 5 backups so don't be alarmed when it is suddenly full, just go delete old ones. Or do like me and tape another 16gb sdcard under your battery cover(fits perfectly on top of the sim card with a lil hanging out over the battery). Flash away. Also...... we are all posting in a thread that is in the wrong section

My HD2 is in the shop right now, so I can't explain without it here in front of me. From my memory alone, I believe there's an option in the Magdlr menu to backup/restore. It may be under Services. If it's not there, then I totally made up that backup function. The next best thing you can do is to use a backup software like Titanium/MyBackup.

Yes it can be. I used daf roms for a while, and in clockwork, choose backup / restore and it will take an image of the partitions, including the ext if memory serves,, which can then be later restored. But you gotta keep the partitions the same size or bigger else it wont fit when you restore.(or maybe it does re write the partitions,I never tested it)

Problem is that he is missing CWM and needs to install it prior to trying new ROMs, which will wipe any ROM he currently has before he has a chance to back it up.
ahhhh hadnt spotted that bit, my oversight. How about the cwm that boots from sd?, suppose that depends whether the nand rom he flashed has the recovery partition,,,
bummer. thanks for the input guys
You could do a full backup using titanium (or whatever its called), then just reflash your current daf rom, but including the recovery.img file from the clockwork files, and using the clockwork flash.cfg, making sure it is creating a system partition big enough for the system.img from the daf rom.
that way you sneakily apply cwm and keep your daf rom, which you restore the backup of, then enter cwm and voila, you can use backup restore.
There is also a converter app to convert daf roms to cwm, you could do it that way,,, backup, wipe, magldr, clockwork, convert daf rom to cwm, flash it, restore backup.
Might also wanna update to latest magldr whilst ya doing that..

Yes, this will work, even if you don't have the recovery partition. You get an error message when CWM boots, but the backup/restore still works fine. Just setup the CWM files in the SD card and boot AD SD from MAGLDR.

Reboot into CWR (both volume buttons held in) while booting until you see “Vibrant'
Once there, go to Backup and run that. Should take about 5 minutes, maybe more.
If all hell breaks loose, this is a snapshot of your phone at that point... it's important to do this before flashing a new ROM!
I'm sure it's something stupid on my side BUT, all the options i have after booting in CWR are(blue): reboot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data, format internal sd-card.
I decided NOT to touch any of those now since i cant find the Backup option on there, so i just rebooted my phone. Please guide me with a link or something. Thanks. I don't want to rush things.

you backup using the app, and nandroid I think.
also make sure to save the backup onto your computer also!
also, there is a special folder, i forget which folder it is. it must be backed up separately i think. If you loose that, you lost it for good and your phone is junk

That's actually incorrect. What you described is still the stock recovery menu. Cwm recovery has more options, and the text will either be green or red, depending on whether you have the ext4 (voodoo) lagfix applied.
If you have the correct CWM update.zip file on the root of your internal sd, then boot into stock recovery and select "reinstall packages." You'll be thrown back into stock recovery, whereupon you select reinstall packages a second time. That second one will put you in CWM recovery.
And to clarify, you CAN restore/backup from CWM (as well as many other things...maybe read up on that). Just remember that a backup does not include your kernel, in case you bounce between 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 roms.
Hope that helps...good luck.

You're thinking of EFS. I don't believe you can back that up through recovery. There is a different procedure for that which I can't recall off the top of my head.
Don't forget, after flashing you should wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and fix permissions. All are options in the recovery.
