AT&T Samsung Note - Continuum General

Rumor has it the Samsung Note is coming to Verizon as the Samsung Journal. If it does indeed come to Verizon, I'm sold. How can I resist a 5.3" HD screen? However, a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor isn't exactly cutting edge considering it would be released sometime around July. Thoughts?

By that time, there will be quad core phones. Not sure about RAM figures. But, either way, by the time the "journal" comes out, it will be midrange, at best.
That being said, dual cores is plenty, and there would already be some base dev on the phone. It would have to be ported from the gsm to cdma versions, but it wouldn't launch as dead weight the way this one did.
Dished out by my dumb digits

I'm hoping other manufacturers follow suit and make quad-core phones with huge displays. After coming off the 3.4" from the Continuum, all I care about is screen real estate.
Anyone heard of anything interesting coming to Verizon this summer?

Speculation: Sprint release Tab in November

Possible Galaxy Tab WITHOUT mobile contract (phone)
"The great thing is this in the UK, you will certainly see this range across all network operators. It will also be taken out outside of traditional mobile channels. So you'll be looking at existing consumer electronics channels." - Samsung UK rep in CNN video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTE0mlWfmno
GREAT NEWS. Would it be right to interpret his statement as saying that some versions of the Galaxy Tab will NOT have the mobile (aka cell phone) component in it? In other words, the device will be sold WITHOUT cellular contract?
As best we know, no. At the very least there hasn't been an official announcement of the Gtab without a 3G radio.
What this seems to be referring to is that you will be able to get one off contract from normal retailers. It will still have the radio and all it will need to get online is a SIM card. That's why so many people on these boards are sooo interested in the price off contract; because unlike the iPad you can chop and change between devices with one data contract as you fancy.

accordin to that the Korean version is SKT: SHW-M180S
^ That's in Korea. So we dont care.
Keep me out of that collective we, besides, Korean version will be better...DMB! Also, depending on the rumors you listen to, it'll be cheaper than the European/international version.
I really came here to say, 'As long as we don't have 3 different forums for what is essentially 1 tablet. 3 Subforums like the new proposal for unique development areas is fine.'
Galaxy Tab to have IPS TFT-LCD display
Hydis to supply IPS panel for Samsung tablet PC, says Digitimes Research
DIGITIMES ICT/FPD Report
Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES, Taipei [Wednesday 8 September 2010]
Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Tab 7-inch tablet PC is said to have received some of its IPS panels, which are of comparable grade as those of Apple's iPad, from Hydis, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based E Ink as well as from Samsung itself. The panel will feature fringe filed switching (FFS) technology, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo.
Citing talks with upstream component makers, Kuo pointed out that the Galaxy Tab's CPU will have the same performance as its C110 processor, but memory will be upgraded from the original configuration of 256MB to 512MB.
Kuo also estimated that the Galaxy Tab's shipments will reach 2-2.2 million units in 2010, with a model adopting an AMOLED panel to be launched in 2011.
With both iPad and Galaxy Tab using IPS panels for their display, Kuo believes the trend will help speed up the penetration of IPS technology in tablet PCs.

then i'll definitely wait for the 2011 versions
to any logical person
no one would be crazy enough to carry a TAB as their main cell phone
i really would LOL if any cell phone provider will try to sell you one with a cell phone plan
Now Sam**** treats T-Mobile as ****, period!
I don't know how much of a difference it make to me for AMOLED over TFT. I mean, I sure as hell love the screen on my Galaxy, the gorgeous deep blacks and rich vibrant colours are just awesome, but it didn't effect my decision to buy. It was more of a 'Oh wow thats awesome' when I got it, but I'd have been happy either way. I think that since we'll be getting better pixel depth than the iPad (130 ppi against 170) the display will still look much better.
I guess if they said there was an AMOLED version coming in say January, then I'd wait, but since I suspect it won't be until a lot later, I'm still happy to get this generation of Tab device. Particularly if the only difference between the two devices is the screen then to me its sure as hell not worth the wait.
I will most likely get a Tab this year, and then the Tab2 (or whatever) Q3 2011 with AMOLED screen and a dual-core CPU and so forth.
in simple terms a TFT is way worse when compared to AMOLED
AMOLED is half as good as SAMOLED

yeah, i would love AMOLED but i do not want to wait. will get this tab as soon as it is available. if a tab2 comes out late next year i will just try to sell the tab and use what i get to buy the new version! people seem to be willing to pay a lot of money to not be attached to a contract
Although AMOLED is obviously better, and SAMOLED better still, its not like we're losing much. Yes certain things can certainly make the Tab better, but I imagine that the TFT is to keep price low and to avoid supply problems (isn't there still that shortage of AMOLED stuff ?) since samsung are trying to sell like a hundred billion of them. Ok maybe not that many, but they were saying they wanted to sell plural tens of millions and even if it not going to happen, they'll want to be able to scale production and give a consistent product, not have to change components like the HTC Desire.
I've seen the display on the iPad and its fine, and that same kind of quality is going to be just as good on the Tab. The main competitor (the archos) has a TFT too, so you aren't missing anything by getting a Tab.
We can always wish for better, but in my experience these things go generationally. Next generation of tablets we may well see sexier displays and so forth, and even 8MP cameras and USB Host and stuff, but it'll be a long time before that, and I genuinely can't see Samsung putting out a nearly invisible update to the device before the next gen.

[Q] US Samsung Galaxy Tab Voice Capabilities??
Assuming the Tab will still have a sim card slot, for the AT&T and T-mobile versions, what are the chances of hacking the voice functions to work on a rooted version of these models?? It says it will still have a mic for video calls, and it should still have bluetooth... so do you think these capabilities are just turned off, or have they been removed all together?? I would love to hear from you guys on how we can get around this horrible restriction that the US carriers are trying to lay down.
Anything is possible as long as they didnt physically taken out the 3G chip. I have high faith in the devs. And this is a hack that is definitely worth the effort.

samsung to make nexus prime?

http://www.phonebuff.com/2011/08/nexus-prime-samsung/
There has been a lot of rumors and speculation in regards to Google’s next Nexus phone: The Nexus Prime. Most rumors had it that Samsung was going to be manufacturing the device, like it did the Nexus S. Well, it seems that Samsung’s lawyers may have indirectly confirmed that Samsung will indeed manufacture the Nexus Prime. Here is an excerpt from a cease-and-desist letter Samsung’s lawyers sent to someone:
“It has come to our attention that you are wrongfully in possession of, and intend to release or otherwise publicly disclose without Samsung’s consent, firmware for the Nexus Prime,” the letter said. “By this letter, Samsung orders you to immediate cease, desist, and refrain from any and all such activities.”
So that pretty much says all we need to know. Samsung is making a phone called the Nexus Prime, and “Nexus” is used only for Google’s line of Nexus phones. So what will this baby look like? So far the rumors (which now seem to have more credibility) say:
4.5 (possibly 4.65) inch Super AMOLED display, with 1280×720 (720p) resolution
1.5 GHz dual-core processor
1 GB of RAM
5.0 megapixel advanced camera (remember its not all about the resolution)
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
In other words, this phone looks to be the best Android phone EVER. Will you be patient enough to hold out for it, or will you bite on a Galaxy S phone? I bit last time, getting the Vibrant (but I didn’t know at the time a Nexus S was coming). I loved the Vibrant and all, but I much rather of had the Nexus S (considering how long it takes manufacturers to push out updates). I won’t be making the same mistake twice.

ill wait for it to go on sprint by the end of december and if its not here or have a release date for sprint then ill hold off for a better phone..
I think I'll wait out for the Nexus Prime if it is made by Samsung and comes on Sprint. I'll be switching to the 900 minute plan so in roughly 3 months I should be eligible for the Sprint Gold (am I right?). Then I can get a Prime at a discount. Luckily my company pays for my bill up to $10/ month. With my company's Sprint discount of 20%, that gets me right under $100/month.
I'm getting Sprint's Galaxy S2... if the Nexus Prime is that good when it comes out, then I'll pay retail for it and sell the GS2 to recover a little. I keep my phones in immaculate condition anyway, so won't be that bad.
The FCC documents state it's 480x800, which makes it a 480p resolution. It'll still be great, just making sure everyone knows prior to their purchase. It'd suck if you ordered this phone just because it has a 720p screen then out of box it's the same as every other phone on the market.

The One X : Coming to AT&T May 6! Finally a suitable replacement for the Aria!

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/atandt-confirms-htc-one-x-to-land-may-6th/#continued
Not close - won't fit in a normal pocket, 56% larger based on overall measurements, weighs 36% more, non-replaceable battery. Fail as Aria replacement. May be a great phone, but much too large.
Wouldn't the HTC One V be a more suitable replacement?
With the X, you might as well be carrying around a tablet in your pocket.
I wasn't talking about it being a similar phone, ha. Just a phone that I like enough to replace the aria. Probably should have clarified

On one hand, I think I'm eligible for an upgrade in late May, but as nice as the One X looks I can't justify buying it, given how crippled it is compared to the international version. Half the internal memory (even if all 16GB were free it wouldn't hold my music collection) and a dual-core Snapdragon instead of a quad-core Tegra 3. LTE doesn't matter too much to me, since we don't even have 3G around where I live, and the college I go to has campus-wide WiFi and city-wide WiMAX for the laptops.
The X seems way to big as a phone for me. It definitely has some powa! I've had the aria for almost a year and a half now and I'm so use to having a small phone. I have to wait till next January for next grade. ouch hopefully a quad core sized aria will be made.

I'd prefer the dual-core Snapdragon over the quad-core Tegra 3. More cores does not always mean better.
Ive used the Note for some time so I think Ill be able to adjust xD. I think its probably my next upgrade. Either this or the new SGS3.
I had the oppurtunity to play with the one x at my local att store today they let have a sneak peak at it before it goes on display tomorrow and I have to say for being 4.7 screen it was surprisingly comfortable in my hand and fit quite easily into my pocket almost less noticeable then my aria. Its unlike any HTC phone before very light and thin. The screen was stunning and it was fast and smooth. I'm pretty much sold on this phone unless the may 3rd announcement in London about the details of the new sg3 is truly note worthy I'll be picking the one x up. As far as the quad vs the dual debate goes I've following a thread where an xda member has quad and just received the rogers one x which will be the same as the att version and in just about every bench mark he has done the duel core out performed the quad. He also felt that the duel just seems better in real world use.

The s4 outperforms the tegra 3 in almost every test. Its not the number of cores but the architecture that counts.

And for $199, It's a steal! I'd be a fool not to get it. I have been due for an upgrade since this month. I am 100% sold on this phone. I try not to think about it though because my nerves get the best of me. It's so long until the sixth!
Perfect time too because the Aria is really starting to show its age. Once I upgrade, the Aria will be a dedicated GPS.
Yea the $199 is def a great price for this beast

Just pre-ordered this baby this morning! Will arrive at my doorstep on the fourth! The Aria forums are a wonderful community, and I can only hope that the One X forums are even half as friendly!
Saw an article today saying there was a promotion at AT&T to get it for $149. I definitely agree that the dual-core is better for "real world" use over the Tegra 3.
Unfortunately for AT&T and HTC, I am going to be switching to Verizon when the SGS3 comes out, unless it is just a complete bust, which I really don't see happening. Verizon has a far more widespread LTE network and much better customer service. I think it's funny how AT&T advertises that their LTE network is faster, but fails to mention that there are far fewer LTE users on their network than Verizon. If AT&T had the LTE traffic that Verizon does, there is no way they would have faster speeds. *steps down from soap box*
Edit: Throwing this out there...I bet the SGS3 gets root and full CM9 support in less time from its release date than the One X. Any takers?

[US Variants] Adreno 225 woes

Two years ago I bought an Incredible. I could have waited a month for the fascinate, and I'm glad I didn't, but something began to bug me; the Adreno 200 was very underpowered. Fast forward to now and I'm forced to upgrade to keep my unlimited data. The obvious choice is the upcoming Galaxy S3, so I pre-ordered one. I can't help but wonder if I'm repeating my last phone purchase by obtaining hardware with a GPU that simply wont hold up in the future.
The biggest blow of having a weak GPU in my Incredible was the incompatibility with ICS. Google would not and could not support the Nexus One due to the meager Adreno 200 GPU it housed. This upset many QSD based device owners, especially the Nexus One adopters. I know ICS roms are continually improving for QSD based phones but they'll always lag. Meanwhile the fascinate has received great ICS support due to having the same GPU as the Galaxy Nexus. One month could have changed my future proof experience, but inevidbly the fascinate had a bunch of issues I'm glad I didn't have to deal with.
I know hardware becomes obsolete. It happens, I get it. We all want to try and do the best we can though, especially those of us on Verizon with unlimited data; this is our last subsidized upgrade allowing us to retain unlimited data.
Looking at GSM Arena's benchmarks, specifically the Egypt off-screen test, the Adreno 225 lags behind yesteryear's Galaxy S2 with the Mali 400. The international GS3's performance in this test zooms ahead of the Qualcomm variants by double.
Will the US Galaxy S3 withstand the test of time and provide future proof hardware for a reasonable amount of time? Or will it fall short of the two year expected lifespan like the QSD Adreno 200 devices did?
I am uncertain and wish Qualcomm would seriously step its GPU game. Am I alone with this line of thinking?

Adreno support obseletion will be out-waited by carrier updates.
You may want to consider posting this in one of the US branded GSIII forums. Aside from having a more entrenched audience, mods here may be cracking down soon about the separation between the two mobile configurations.
Now that that's out the way, I've been asking myself the same questions for weeks... which eventually ended in ordering the international edition. I doubt you're going to be help back in basic computing or daily use; the American HTC One X and One S both use the Adreno 225 and still manage to "wow" critics are reviewers relatively unanimously. That being said, if you're one for bleeding-edge technology, games, and general eye candy, the Mali may be the way to go.
Considering the Adreno 225's audience is comprised of 2 flagship phones, you should be good for Jellybean, whenever that makes it to the US variant. Aside from that... the two years will probably be up before the next edition makes its way to your carrier.

Ah, I see the boards you speak of now. I didn't properly refresh my Board list on my XNA app (using a legacy version for performance reasons). You're right I should post in one of those, even if the Verizon specific one isn't up yet. Now I feel somewhat silly!
I realize that handsets with the Adreno 225 have received universal praise, but then again so did the Adreno 200 handsets. Also I am crackflasher so it doesn't matter when the carriers deliver updates as I flash the bleeding edge in recovery or whatnot.
You're right though. I shouldn't be on verizon to begin with if I worry about these things because the best of the best will always be a GSM unlocked phone. Something to think about I suppose.

This is the reason I am getting the s3 instead of the htc one x. I had the original HTC desire (with the adreno 200) and I choose it over the galaxy s1, and after a year I regretted it. There were so many cool games out for the s1 that the desire could never dream of playing. So I wanted to upgrade and I had the choice of the international s2 with the mali 400 and the HTC sensation with its adreno 220. I choose the s2 simply because of it's better gpu, and a year on I don't regret it. Looking now at the sensation not being able to play nova 3 with the same amount of effects as the s2, I couldn't be happier. My s2 is still good after a year, compared to my htc desire being crap after a year. It's the same thing now for me, I am choosing the galaxy s3 over the htc one x with the tegra 3 simply because the international s3 has a much more powerful GPU than the GeForce GPU in the Tegra 3 with resides in the HTC One X. The first hardware thing in a device to go out of date is the GPU, so getting a phone with the most powerful gpu, in my option is one of the most important things if you want a future proof device. If I was you I would try to order the International s3

Do you know that the 225 is probably 15x - 20x faster than the 200? I have no problem playing any of the games like blood & glory, frontline commando or deadspace when on the Sensation XL running the Adreno 205. Thats several times slower than the 225.

Qualcomm is too fast?

As I have very rare chance to buy a phone. Finally I bought note 3. Though snapdragon 800 is new...now...as I said once I bought something next thing announced right next day. Bought my note 3. When that one is on a phone they will be making a 3.0 gzh one. Most mid range phones will run anything on android, so I wouldn't worry. Specs are now overkill.

This is the nature of technology, it moves more quickly than some manufacturers can keep up. By the time that device actually launches, there'll be another new chipset just around the corner.

So what? You got latest and greatest right now. The alternative would be to keep your old phone and wait for eternity.
Even a year from now, the note3 will likely be at least upper middle class.
Anyway, would you mind sharing a link to that announcement? I just checked the press releases and found nothing.
Qualcomm is working on a 64 bit SoC to counter Apple's latest gimmick. So eventually that will make it to our phones. If you play the "I want latest and greatest" then you should be ready either to never buy anything (the "I will wait until better XYZ comes out" crowd), or upgrade every few months.
Note 3 is plenty enough to do everything I throw at it. Yes, extra clock speed typically won't hurt you, but don't let it be the deciding factor. Crap, Note II is still amazing for almost everything, and it's definitely not on a current gen chip.
