Safe to leave 10.1 in car in 80 deg heat? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

My wife and I are in Texas on vacation this week and the high temp tomorrow
is supposed to be 80 deg f.
Can I leave my tab safely in our rental car at that temp or is that too hot for the tab?
I want to use it for gps and web browsing for the drive to Dallas tomorrow
but dont want to carry the tab around once we arrive.

No expert on this but 80 F (26-27°C) really doesn't seem that much. My phone had no problems when it was exposed to a high humidity (80-90%) and much higher temperatures (45-50°C - 113-122 F). Had it in my pocked and not in the car but still.
Also, people use the Tab outside in the summertime too, with the sun shining directly on it, and I haven't heard of any problems because of that.
PS: This website states that the max operating temperature for the Tab is 113°F (45°C). http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/samsung-galaxy-tab-10/4507-3126_7-34505338.html

80oF is such a normal temp for me. However, if you leave the tab inside the car, the temp will go higher after few hours but i still don't see any problem with that. It's not like a 100oF summer time.

I laughed at that. In my country, 80F (~26.5 C) is considered a nice cool temp. But back to your question, as long as you don't leave the tab on the dashboard, directly under the windshield (and the sun) it should be all right.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't even chance it.
An enclosed car in direct sunlight easily gets way over any temperature that I would ever subject any expensive electronic device to.
Even with windows slightly down I wouldn't feel safe doing it. Google how hot the inside of a small car can get in direct sunlight. I think you'll err on the side of caution once you see.
I know I'm late and sure you've already made any decisions, so good luck whatever your decision.

Yes if its cloudy or at night.
No if its in direct sunlight or if the car is in direct sunlight for a long period of time.
Extensive heat will damage the LCD.
80 degrees under the seat with intermitent direct sunlight and your still ok.

Gee I wish I lived and traveled to places everyone else seems to where there's no concerns over theft . .
If I don't want to carry my tab with me at my destination I don't bring it along for the trip, plain and simple.

As long as the tab is powered down and not on standby, it is unlikely leaving it in the car for too long will cause long term damage.
Temps here in the summer go as high as 105F indoors. Admittedly, those are during El Niño summers. But I've left electronic equipment in the car before, usually in temperatures of around 95F. The operating temperatures of these electronics are much higher. The only downside I've noticed to leaving electronics in warm temps for too long is that the battery drains much faster. As long as you give it ample time to cool down before powering them up and it's not directly under the windshield/on top of the dashboard, leaving them in the car is fine. If you're not sure, put it in the glove compartment or, as mentioned earlier, under the seat. If you're still not sure, put it in the trunk. It should be safe there.

just leave ur tablet in ur car. if anything happens, you can sue samsung and get a new car lol

If it is going to be sunny, I wouldn't risk leaving any electronic device in a car. Even if it is only 80 outside, the temps could reach 120 - 140 in a sealed car on bright sunny day.

I have a warranty on mine so I don't care, but to answer your question it should be OK. 98% of these items are shipped all over the US and are delivered by trucks where they sit in the back for days in boxes and no issues.

Power it down and put it in the glove box or center console and it will be fine. As long as it isn't exposed to direct sunlight and it's powered on there will be no risk of the electronics exceeding the max operational temps. Rental cars are usually new models so unless you have an Ugly Duckling rental with an all steel center console or glove box I don't see an 80 degree day heating the internal temp to anything near what it would take to superheat one of those compartments to the point of damaging your tablet.
Not sure how the old screen moisture problems will interact with that heat though.

At times here in the Philippines, ambient temp goes up to 31c and it not fry our gadgets or anything at all.

That sucks, where I live, during hot summers there are days with temps over that
If I get the tablet (and hopefully I will soon) I guess I'll have to be careful, though I'm guessing that higher temps probably wont also be a problem and that 45°C is a "safe" value

Screw the heat, I would be worried about someone jacking it!

same here. i'd worry more about getting it stolen than a moderate 80 degree heat.

I left mine in the car one day last summer when I went into a museum in LA. Didn't even think about the heat. Came back out and the screen was all greasy looking (similiar to how people supposedly had oily looking rings on them). Anyhow..... After I powered off and had the A/C on, it was back to normal and looked good as new.
Won't be doing that again though.

I'm in AZ and have deployed to Iraq and have never had a problem. Like others have stated though make sure it not left out in direct sunlight and you'll be fine.

uh.......what about the trunk? No direct heat, no direct exposure to jackers!

Phone getting hot + can smell something from it

I saw another thread about the phone getting hot but couldnt find it.. so im making another thread
When i play certain games the phone gets very hot near the top left.. both sides.
When i take the cover off the back i can smell something.. its not a burning smell.. iv never smelt something like this before.. its like a really.. really weird liquorice smell.
Iv downloaded some temperature apps but none of them give the correct reading.
The game i was running is "Dungeon Hunter".. i even ran an old snake game (the ones from old nokia phones) and even then it got really hot. Though most of the games i play on it the phone doesnt get hot.. just warm-ish
So i was just wondering what temperature app should i use and does your phone get really hot/ weird smell coming from it?
Thanks!
ps: even though the phone is cool now i can still smell it
mine2gets reli hot, even the footy game crashes
Im really thinking of sending this phone back now.
The smell i get off of it is not normal at all.
I get scared of the phone overheating/ burning when playing games etc..
and again.. after 1hour the phone still smells the same..
My phone got pretty warm when I played some zombie hunter and browsed the internet. After an hour the area around the lense and the screen were very warm. Though I wouldn't say they were uncomfortable to use because of it.
As for smell, apart from the new phone/plastic smel, I didn't notice anything.
My advice: if you notice weird behaviour you think can be traced back to heat, give it back. Otherwise, trust the built in safety stuff.

were you charging the phone at the time? cuz mine gets hot when playing games with it being plugged in. there was once when the temperature shot up to 50 degree C which quickly went back to normal range after unplugging the phone.

I wasnt charging my phone at the time.
also the battery is fine it doesnt get hot at all.. its just the top left of the phone.. where the CPU is?
Does any one have or know of an app that shows the correct temperature of the phone/ CPU?
bump
again.. any one know of an app that gives an accurate reading of the CPU temperature?
My phone got pretty hot earlier, I was playing angry birds whilst plugged in, the screen was getting very hot, the top in particular.
I use a hard-ish gel case. The one with the kick stand
It's normal for phones (especially thin ones, where the back is plastic) to get hot during heavy CPU intensive use. This is very common when charging also. As a general rule of thumb, it should never exceed a heat you can't hold. So if you are finding it really too hot to hold or uncomfortable I would definitely take it back. Otherwise, as long as it doesn't exceed 40/50 degrees, it's likely ok.
However no phone should be smelling like that! I suppose a new plastic smell might occur if it's brand new, but certainly not as you describe.
PS: Just a thought... do you have a case on it? Often, a plastic / gel case can make the phone a lot hotter and I suppose that could also be the source of the smell?
its normal to get hot whilst charging tho, i guess the phone has safty measures if it gets too hot.
Maybe its more of software fix for games rather than hardware problem, just like my pc graphics card that used to get very hot and force a restart but once a software update (firmware) came out and installed it was fine.
The CPU is probably specced for like 80C, heat shouldnt be a problem unless you place in 40C sunlight or something.
The smell is of course another matter.
I didnt have any case on it.
Iv returned the phone for now and i might wait for the iphone5
Don't get me wrong.. i love the phone but it shouldnt be getting that hot/ smell coming from it when hot.
Who knows.. i might rebuy the phone later.. but as of right now my mind is set on waiting for the iphone5.
Thanks for your help anyway =)
Did you ever smell SGS1?
If you did, is it same kind of smell or not?
It smells too really weird if you take the back cover off, really not a big issue I think.
I have the same problem when I played the Pro evolution soccer. After 3 minutes, the zone of the virtual direction pad was very very hot. I think it's a problem when we push hardly on a very thin screen multitouch like GS2. It's really a serious problem. Anybody can verify? I think this should be a sticky topic!!!!!!!!!!!

Was it the top end of the phone? If so then that's where the CPU is, so its got nothing to do with a thin multitouch screen. That area is bound to get hotter than the rest of the phone.
Problem is that everyone got their own definition of "hot". I mean, even my computer monitor is "hot" at the top and bottom while its cold at the center (backlighting heat it up). It doesnt hurt its function the slightest. Electronics do this, plain and simple.
I find it very hard to believe that Samsung could have missed heat dissipation issues, unless they never tested their own phone for a single minute.

Yes, it was the top left end on my phone. I quitted the game as soon as I realized that the phone was burning really really hot, in 20 minutes before I have to turn it off. I can't imagine a phone can be "hot" like that, it's unacceptable. Try the game Pro evolution soccer and you'll see. I'll try some more games to verify
The phone feels hot (well hotter then you would expect) when I am playing game, browsing webs or charging it. I am a little bit concerned but decided to keep the phone which is such a powerful mean machine and too good for me to let go.
I hope they do honour the two years manufacture's warranty if the phone does melt in the future.

If you use a custom rom or root your phone it will void your warranty so you will be left with a very nice £500 melted slab.

I understand that electronics get hot but atleast a screen has air vents and because its much bigger it can spread the heat around the product.

device heat

I've noticed that the device is pretty hot. I'm not sure, which is why I want to verify this with you.
I've used the "Battery Indicator" app which shows that the temp is 34-37 Celsius.

Really? Cause it always feels hot in my hand....
Could it be that I'm just hot (cause the weather here is hot as well)?
What would be too hot ( I mean what temperature ).
I've had the phone restart itself twice yesterday after getting too hot (don't know the temp it was at though)

34-37c is absolutely normal. Its quite cold where I am atm, and the battery is 37c.
You've also no idea that the phone restarted due to heat. I've gone through 5 replacements now for various reasons, and they all got pretty warm under use. However one of them got stupidly hot, so hot you couldn't even hold onto it without hurting your hand. Thats why I got that one replaced.
And yes, if the ambient temperature is hot, it'll make the phone feel hotter aswell.
None of my GSII's have ever restarted on their own though. Could've been due to an app/widget though.
There has been 2-3 threads on this, one of which I created myself.
It's normal for the device to get quite hot, especially around the camera at the back and the screen near the top of the phone when gaming or watching videos over wifi. It shouldn't get so hot it can't be held though. It also doesn't help if you have a case on the phone, especially a thick gel-type one. I'm currently looking for a thin perforated cover, like the official Samsung one, but unlike that one with protection for the top and the bottom of the device. I suspect these holes will help with heat dissipation.
The phone has inbuilt safety for overheating I believe, although mine has never gotten hot enough to activate it. The phone will shut down if it thinks any more heat will lead to damage.

Thanks!
Was just about to ask about the case, since I bought a black gel one.
So do any of you know of a case that won't affect the heat ( a lot )?
I am honestly afraid to walk with the device without a case so that I don't break the screen (or scratch it) or break the phone in half (it looks so delicate!)
Like I said, the perforated covers look the best for preventing heat build up, although the official Samsung case doesn't protect the top or bottom corners, which perversely are the most likely parts to be damaged if the phone is dropped. I'd like to get hold of a cover that looks like that but with all round protection.
But, is it also "normal" that the phone gets incredibly hot when you play music with headphones on?
I seem to have experienced all the issues everybody went through (except for the shutdown) but nobody ever mentioned music (i am talking about 3 minutes playback not hours!)
Anybody with the same issue?
Take the back case off and smell near the top left of the phone..
When mine got hot a weird smell came from it.
It's probably worth checking with something like osmonitor that you haven't got a stuck task.
A few times mine has got really hot and it was a process using 96% cpu...
Most recently it was SocialHub which I don't even use! Had to reboot the phone to stop it as it wouldn't die.
I also had extremal heating in that area while playing angrybirds and after I move app from SDcard to internal memory - All comes OK. So I suppose it is because your apps ar data (music etc) located on SD and some of them due to speed limits heats during work. (it is in addition to WiFi and other network activity). Cause when I plug SD into comp by adapter and perform long file framsfer it also heats
So is this thing hotter than the original Galaxy S? I can live with the phone at that temp, but any higher is questionable.
It will shut down if it gets to hot. And I guess it takes quite a bit because a few months ago on engadget.com I saw some video of an iPhone a palm phone and I think a nexus one on a grill to see which one will either break or shut down first. And after like a minute on a grill it finally shut off. So I wouldn't worry about it unless its so hot u can't hold it. Once with my evo I was using 4g GPS Bluetooth. And charging the phone and it got up to around 115° (around 46° in celcius) and was fine. I shut it down tho when I noticed it got that high tho haha

Mine (running XWKE7) went to 50 c when gaming "we rule" in game hub with charger plugged in. No external SD installed though.
Also keep in mind that fatter phones have more space to dissipate the heat. This phone is thin thin. That heat has to go somewhere! That's why I want a case that vents

as soon as I start playing "real football 11" i can essentially cook an egg on the phone. Other games are fine though
Could it be due to the installation of overclocking apps? Didn't notice it was this hot during my first few days of usage.
In the first few days after I got my SGS II the phone went really very hot every time I charged it or when I played a game or even when I watched a movie.
Since I use Lite'ning Rom and banned some system apps the problem vanished.
So for me it seems to be a software-sided problem.

[Q] Do TPU cases get hot?

Hey guys,
I just received my new black TPU case. It fits next to perfectly and makes my phone feel way more sturdy, so I'm very happy so far . Now I have one question: will TPU cases become hot easily? Of course too much heat will not be good for my phone and when it turns summer here again, I want to know if it might get my phone to become too hot, especially since it's black.
I don't know if it is a stupid question, but then I will know that at least too
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That's a strange question.
It sounds like your trying to say if the tpu case will emit heat on its own. LOL
1. You should not leave your phone out in the sun. That's how it gets hot during the hot summer. (That's why you have pockets.)
2. The environment you're in will affect the temperature of the phone but not too much. For example, a outside temperature of 25 degrees Fahrenheit will decrease the temperature to about maybe about 4-5+ degrees lower. But the phone is still operable.
3. I have been using tpu cases for years and it has never been a problem. I never thought about it either. You bought the case you use it. Otherwise, you can leave it naked and free.
(Please don't leave your phone out in the hot sumer hot.) Keep it in your pocket or backpack with the case on and away from hard objects that can damage the screen.

Thanks for your reaction. I didn't mean that it would emit heat, but more that it would trap it. The thing I was concerned about would in be in summer in my room whilst the phone would be charging. Especially when I'm playing the PS3 there in summer temperature would rise quite a bit and the battery of my old ace went up to 40°C

[Q] Overheat while doing long distance GPS Navigation?

I like using my phone for GPS navigation on long road trips. Phone plugged into power and attached to a window mount, like you would a Garmin. I'm concerned about overheating issues doing this with the G2. My old Galaxy S 2 seems to handle it OK, though I have had a couple overheat warnings before and had to unplug the charger.

Well... I know my HTC One X+ WILL overheat to the point it shuts itself down if plugged into power and playing a game for more than 20min, sad but true mainly due to Tegra 3 being 40nm in size. Now i don't know any quad core device on the market that supports being plugged into power and using something that uses a lot of the device like GPS and graphics intense games without it getting hot, figured that was just common sense? Now i can see in an emergency having low battery then last minute need to use GPS so you HAVE to plug it into power while using GPS but i wouldn't advise doing this on the regular, goes for any quad core device.

The Optimus G Pro used to give me overheat warnings if I was charging it while navigating (also in 100 degree, sunny weather coming through the wnidshield).
I took a 4 hour trip today using it as my GPS, streaming music to my stereo, and plugged in the whole way. Not only did I not get any overheat warnings, it wasn't even very warm when I checked. This is the AT&T version.

Cellphone overheating when used as GPS
I have been using cellphones for GPS navigation for a long time. I found that my new HTC One overheated enough during a trip late this summer that the GPS chip stared giving bad results (not tracking). The aluminum back of the phone was _really_ hot.
After some investigating, I decided this was multifactorial.
Charging heats up a phone.
Having a nice, bright screen (which the HTC One has) on all the time heats up a phone.
Being in the sun heats up a phone.
Aiming your air conditioner vents at the phone cools off the phone.
Unplugging the power cord for a few minutes cools off the phone.
Simply turning off the screen when you don't need it cools off the phone.
Having the cellphone's back mostly covered by a cellphone mount prevents heat dissipation and heats up the phone.
I had been using an Arkon universal cellphone mount, which I had found superior to all of the other types I'd tried (4 others). However, it covers most of the back of the phone and this impedes cooling. I tried a RAM Mount universal X-mount instead. The X mount only covers a fraction of the back of the cellphone and I have had no overheating with it. But wasn't happy with it. It's hard to get the phone into the mount, and it's hard to swivel 90 degrees from landscape to portrait, which I find handy to do as I keep the map with North up (I do a lot of land navigation/orienteering and prefer the map this way) and sometimes want to rotate to see more of my route.
I liked the Arkon mount enough better that I went back to it. However, I modified it: I placed six little clear plastic sticky-back pads against the back of the mount, to hold the phone a bit away from the back of the mount. This allows considerably more convective cooling. Since I have done this, I have had no issues with overheating. Any good hardware store should have such sticky-backed plastic feet/pads. I used six for redundancy, so that if one falls off I don't have to replace it right away. See the picture.
I have the G2 and have used it for GPS (Waze) while driving to and from work for traffic. I am in the car around 45-120+ minutes depending on traffic and such. While in the car it is connected to the charger and also streaming music through my car audio system. The phone is located on my right thigh as I have not found a car mount that I actually like enough to use in my car. The back does get warm but not hot. I have not had any issues with since I bought about a week ago. I came from using a S4 which did get a bit warmer at times using this same setup.
I dont plan on going on a long road trip till either later this year or early next year. So I cant tell you about the phone's heat issue for any use longer than 2 hours while I am in the car.
I used mine on a 10 hr trip today, full brightness, nav, and audio streaming. Never got over 98 degrees. Bright sun, and cloud cover varied. This is in a windshield mount also.
Temperature outside causing this?

I use it lots for navigation with Rhapsody streaming from the headphone jack to my car stereo and a car charger plugged in. I use Waze, longest trip has been 2 hours and I average using it maybe 5 hours a week in Florida heat sitting up on dash in landscape mode using a kickstand on a non slip mat. I hope its as reliable as my Optimus G was, used to do a 22 hour round trip each month with it providing navigation and bluetooth streaming in my old Focus as well as running the Escort Live app paired to my Passport and it was hardly warm to the touch.
I used mine in GPS while listening to music, got warm, but not hot. I've never had trouble like that with any phone except when I left it in direct sunlight in a car when it was parked. Unless you are overclocking you shouldn't need to worry about it.

Be warned. Heat damage.

I think people should know about this, including that Sony do not cover it at all in warranty, nor do insurers.
I left my phone on the dashboard of the work van for around 4 hours whilst out on site. It was a baking hot day and I never considered the heat to be a concern.
Come back 4 hours later to find a crack, yes a crack, in the top right corner of my screen. It certainly wasn't there before I left the van, I changed the screen protector on the drive down, as I was in the passenger seat before anyone says something
The crack is roughly two inches long and has affected the panel beneath the screen, push on the crack and the screen goes all funky.
Having spoken to various shops and Sony themselves. They all agree it's the heat. It was only about 25° Celsius, scorching for the UK, so for you in the hot countries, heed this... DON'T leave the phone exposed to direct sunlight. Sony don't give a rats ass if the screen breaks.

Ride it like you downhill it.
I doubt they would honor the warranty because it's not factory damage. The obvious is that you left it in an extreme condition. Many electronic devices have advise that do not leave them under direct sunlight. Especially, Z is black which absorbs a lot of heat when compare to other colors.

I've had CDs warp when left on the dash in direct sunlight.
I know it was only 25°C outside, but consider that the windscreen will magnify the sun's rays and the heat is also trapped in what is basically an enclosed metal shed.

My Z is white though and was back facing up, still lesson learnt on this one.

Yeah, I got unlucky on this, It didn't seem warm due to the wind but silly me didn't think of that.
In my country, the Nederlands, there is a instance which helps customers get in contact with companies like Sony. It's called the 'Consumentenbond'. They wrote and article about these cracks and asked everyone with a crack to contact them. Sony gave a reaction and should now be working on the issues people claimed.
I definitely think Sony does actually care.
My Z is to repair for a loose back panel now, but I also contacted this instance about this. Sony would get in contact with me in a few days to solve the problems and complains.

cars easily get over 140 fahrenheit inside on hot days. of course it's going to get heat damage. i destroyed an ipod several years ago leaving it in a car glovebox. it would only work when it was refrigerated.

There has been some days here in portugal that got over 45C and just leaving the phone for 10minutes on the passenger seat would make the glass extremely hot, it's like a sun-magnet. I reckon that 10 more minutes and something realy realy bad would happen like a glass crack.
Other than accidently placing the phone in the car on a hot day, I am more worried that the phone overheats itself when I'm using it to play games. What more living in a country that's has tropical weather all year long

You are lucky.
I did the same worth my bb9900 and the battry expanded inside the phone opening the back cover of the phone.
If it happened to XZ then the whole phone will crack.
Ps temp was that day close to 40c

All I know is that I have left it for 5+ hours in the car under direct sunlight in mid summer (40°C in Greece) several times while GPS, bluetooth, 4G was on and Google maps was running, the battery reached 58°C and my phone is still alive! No cracks, no melt downs, no back cover unglued etc.
25 degrees is not what your dashboard's temperature is. You should be aware that the dashboard is on a whole other level of freaking hotness under the sun. I don't think any company would honor warranty for cooked gear.

Leaving your phone in the car on its dashboard, on a hot day has nothing to do with warranty or any faults of the manufacturer! This is his own fault not sony's..
The cracks you're thinking are build-quality problems.
