ICS update coming in next few weeks - Nexus S General

Engadget reports that ICS is coming to nexus s in next few weeks.
What do you think, This will be a new version or same 4.0.3 for nexus s 4g and i9023?

I have a feeling (hint, IMM26) that Google will make 4.0.4 for the Nexus S 4G and possibly make that the new OEM standard like 4.0.3 is.

I cant even follow this story anymore. It's too much. It's coming, it's not, it's coming. Ugh. As much as I have followed this story i'm likely just going to stay with CM9 anyway. But I can empathize with the stock users.
In retrospect I should have used different word above. Please no sex jokes.

I hope its 4.0.4 because 4.0.3 the Barrett is so bad after that update I bought a sensation.**

Hope it's 4.0.4 or 4.0.5.

I guess we're finally getting 4.0.4

Hope it is 4.0.5
I think it was a french carrier who mentioned mars for a ota of 4.0.5 to nexus s
http://mobilesyrup.com/201oi2/02/06/galaxy-nexus-and-nexus-s-to-receive-ota-android-4-0-5-update-by-march/

Hope its 4.1!

Hope it's 5.0 (sarcasm)

What a mess Google made with Android.
Right now, ICS is becoming Android's Vista and if Google don't step up they will lose a lot.
I would expect, at least, some sort of official statement by Google or Android team this but I realize now Google is some mute giant.
I mean, even ZTE communicates better than the big G. Get this, they would talk directly with rom development community. I thought "if ZTE does this having a Nexus must be the balls!" I was wrong...

+1... after 3 months they really should come out with something decent..

You guys realize this article means nothing?!
"It's coming in a few weeks" - that's how Google always announces any updates.
The only info you get from it is: "there will be an update, ics is not officially shelved on the nexus s." No reason to get agitated, anyone can "predict" this as long as Google doesn't let out an official statement.
Define "a few weeks"... it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

ICS, and Starcraft Ghost to be released 'in a few weeks'.

Probably not....a good 80% of users probably aren't aware the Google has anything to do with the software on the phone....most probably think the manufacture does it and the rest likely assume the carrier does....so everyone whose manufacture just said they are getting ics likely just discovered its existance and where completely surprised and happy...

That is true, but all this ignoring the more "geeky" and update friendly community doesn't do them any good.
And at least for a Nexus phone, I believe people bought them for the clean Google experience and that experience is getting to feel ignored right now.

Few weeks means in a couple of months... in google time

I hope we get to see it this year

I doubt we will be getting any update soon. And if we do it doesn't matter because I'm not upgrading until milestone 5 (or a ROM with all the same features based on the upgrade) comes out.
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
AOKP (Milestone 4)
Air Kernel (3.45)
OC 800/100 (Lionheart)
Live OC (100 - Noop)
v6 Supercharged

Hey guys, I got some great news on the eta of the ota, what my very close sources tell me that we WILL get an ota, when Google releases it. but till then fellas you are more than welcome to grab some sammiches from our dev section and save the internets bandwidth talking about when its released.

Should be interesting. Also, I had not heard of a ViewSonic phone before this article, and I am not sure if I am liking its design.
Nonetheless, based on what you said, it's good to see others come along and hopefully compete with Samsung, especially since so many people do not like or want a Samsung phone - other than to have Samsung's beautiful phone screen.

we on SNS got 2.3 before any body else

Well, the way they're treating N1 owners right now is rubbing me the wrong way, but I'm willing to give them benefit of the doubt. In fact, they could be just waiting till 2.4 is ready to give it to both Nexus 1 and Nexus S. We buy the Nexus phones partly because we are supposed to be given updates on a first priority basis. If Google decides to hold back 2.4 from us for another phone, they will have lost an Android supporter in me.

I'd be shocked if we didn't get the 2.4 update, at the time of its launch. Especially since 2.4 doesn't seem to be Ice Cream, but rather a touch of Honey glazed over Gingerbread.
While I am kind of new to Android (and smart phones in general), I cannot see Google keeping this update from us NS users. Although, I am a little surprised that the N1 hasn't seen Gingerbread yet (OTA from Google that is).
Just curious, how many updates did the N1 get from the time of its launch, and what Android version did it start with (Eclair or Froyo?).
I'm really surprised the N1 hasn't seen GB officially yet. I would be curious to see 2.4

This is the Galaxy tab 10.1 forum. We don't have the same hardware, so this won't help anyone here.
Yup. It was announced two days ago. It was Motorola's way of squeezing the last buck out of the xoom before they can it. They wanted it to appeal to the masses because of ics' huge "success."
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
I think we're missing the bigger picture here..... Xoom got ICS before the SGT10.1 did, before CM9 was moved out of Alpha, before any other tablet on the market today! Sure, it's a "pure Google experience" device, and Google wanted Moto to get the first crack at it, which is all understandable from the official ROM release standpoint, but where the hell are we in all this? I thought CM9 was a go on the SGT10.1 before any other tablet?
Still waiting patiently, but man, that really sucks for us.....
Pretty sure there are hardware issues preventing a finished port. Check out the Cyanogen interview from another site.

not sure I get you: CM9 is a modified ICS build that uses ICS code + specific hardware drivers (so it's custom for each device); a google experience device is specifically designated by google to be the first with new OS version. So you should expect the GED to get the update before any official CM9 is released. Also, I have to disagree that it "sucks for us" - don't conflate someone else's good fortune with your own bad fortune.

Wasn't the ATP just released with ICS, not updated to it?
Also, I'm pretty glad to see that ICS is rolling out for ANYTHING that wasn't given to it at birth. Doesn't anybody see that this just means things are moving along as they should be? At least in the smallest bit?
ATP initially shipped with HC.
It's no surprise that Xoom was the first - in fact I'm shocked it took this long for it to get an official update release, considering it's been supported in AOSP from the beginning.
As others have said, the Xoom was a Google Experience device. Consider it to be the Nexus of Honeycomb tablets.
I've waited very patiently for ICS on the Gtab 10.1. I think I still have a bit of patients left. Task's rom makes the tab enjoyable for now.

I think you mean "patience."
If the gtab 10.1 gets an official OTA what will that mean for CM9? Would it just be a quick fix to any lingering CM9 issues and thereby push us into a CM9 custom ROM immediately? Or would the CM9 devs have to re-develop the new distribution for release?
You know...
There are two things I always hear in technology forums:
1- WOW! Look a girl in the forum!
2- OMG! You always complain....
But yeah, maybe they are right.. Maybe I complain... a lot...
You know, its not that I am jealous that Moto has got ICS before Samsung.
What drives me crazy is that fact we dont even have an ETA. I wouldnt mind waiting until March or April, but a dead line would be nice, or at least a sign that they are doing something! A beta maybe?? A proof of concept? Photos??
But no... Not even a word, nothing...
Last I heard from Samsung is that they got sued by Apple... Then....
*NOTHING*
What exactly are you looking to do differently on your tab when you get ICS?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
Stardate is right lol
besides the difference in the system build, what are you going to do with it? having HC 3.2 and ICS 4.0, you'll do the same thing. what is so proud of getting ICS first when you do know GT10.1 will get it later on. maybe Samsung just keep it as a secret to do more experience test than others.

They haven't pushed a new update for quite a while on any Nexus devices. There has never been an ICS version on the AT&T GSM version so I don't think there is just a CDMA issue at this point but an overall issue fixing ICS problems.

I know, think of all the sites and all the articles written about how OEM's can't get their updates out fast enough. Now when Google can not update it's only phones (a lot fewer than any OEM) with it's own OS (something they obviously had the source of for a lot longer than any OEM as they were the ones who built it) not a single article on any gadget blog or Android blog. It strikes me as odd after all the crying about the OEM's on all of theses sites, not a one can muster up a single paragraph about Google and their huge failing at the very same thing.
This is so disappointing. To me it means there's no Android I can safely buy and assume I will receive timely updates. And since I want timely updates it may mean having to look at other platforms. For now I guess it means that the CM team (or other custom ROM) is my upgrade path from now on. But custom roms still get better when official code is released.

Its not OTA like Google. Right now MS requires a cord and a computer to receive updates.

iOS 5 does its updates OTA. Again, how they are pushed has nothing to do with it. Deals with carriers does have an effect. But the issue with ICS on Nexus devices is not carrier hold up at this point.
According to twitter (last week JBQ responded some tweets), 4.0.4 still has some issues (telephony and kernel issues). Once that's fixed i bet we get our updates. All the OEM ICS OTA right now are on 4.0.3, which does have issues (at least on Nexus S).

And just as soon as I get a phone with ICS, its not obsolete. Awesome... maybe JB will hit the SGS3 by next summer.
Well lets just hope that the Devs will be able to make some magic happen for our devices using the new "Project Butter" they are implementing in JB.
Idk I'm reconsidering maybe returning and waiting for the next nexus. Google will roll out with the update in mid July and the gnex will receive it via OTA. It just sucks how carriers take such a long time to make sure their bloat works. At&t and Tmobile just barely had ICS roll out on GS2 and I don't think sprint has even been upgraded officially yet.

There is no new phone that Google is revealing. Jellybean will only be on the nexus s, galaxy nexus and nexus 7 tablet. I have high hopes that developers will be able to get a working CM version of jellybean on this sgs3
It's almost certain that their will be custom roms of the latest Android OS long before CDMA Nexus' get it. Not to mention the new Nexus will have underwhelming specs. I say hold on to your S3.
Looking forward to a CyanogenMod 9.1 (or would that be 10?)
Considering how new this phone is and the inevitable huge developer support once everyone gets their phones I'm not too worried about not having this for long.
Besides... I am perfectly happy with ICS. I haven't found a need or an issue that would make me irritated by not having something in JB. That's technology and software for you. There is always something right around the corner that is better.

Samsung has been showing it's intent to make their updates faster...what will the unified carrier hardware and adding in 2 gigs of RAM for futureproofing.
I hope so...someone has said Q3 2012...we'll see

:highfive:
I heard q3 also, just scuttlebutt though. Can't wait for JB, its going to be phenomenal on the sgs3.

Thought about selling my gs3 to get the gnex. Then I saw google also released a PDK for JB. I figured it would shorten the wait for Sammy to give us JB.
And I thought, if jellybean is that nice on the gnex, it's gonna be bananas on this phone.
Besides, I'm loving everything about this phone and I think I'll get a nexus 7 for my jellybean fix.

If the next Nexus phone is coming from Motorola Mobility Samsung will be sure to get JB into the GS3 by then to attract future customers.
I saw Q3 after JB announcement watching IO. Who knows when... but I don't think Samsung is waiting around to release it on their flagship phone.

I was floored when I heard Moto was releasing the next Nexus phone. I'll never buy another Moto phone
Even if it is Q3, that starts tomorrow and only lasts through September. I think I can suffer through 3 or so months of ICS ;-) And besides... if they're already working on JB I think we'll probably have leaked builds within a week of the device's actual release. Exciting times ahead...

That will stir up the hopeful's that still think MOTO will unlock their bootloader's lol. I agree though. This will be my last MOTO. Sad, as I love the physical build quality. Takes a serious beating and keeps on ticking.

Oh good, because I was thinking that I really needed something to slow my sammy down. It's just too smooth and fast right now.

I was once one of them, had to learn the hard way.
I'm not sure i care about when samsung pushes the JB update to us
i just want pure google JB, damnit this phone will be perfect with pure jb
Well coming soon... hopefully that means SOON. Except if their is really no Flash support or no one can get it to work then forget it. I use Full sites not the craptastic mobile ones.
I really hope Samsung doesn't remove the Google Now search feature from JB (in order to keep it from "competing" with S Voice). One of the few things that bugs me about the TouchWiz implementation is how they remove the stock Android keyboard, in favor of the Samsung Keypad... which is a little ominous. Of course, you can just install the "stock" kb from the Market (if those "ports" are really as good as the stock versions; I'm using the "ICS kb" now on my Vibrant, and it seems pretty good, but haven't spent enough time with the stock kb to judge if it's the same)... I doubt Google Now will be made available the same way!

Yeah I was thinking about that too, but Google search is in the phone already so I doubt they removed it, what I really want is to jelly bean coded right with the new samsung, I can't believe I'm actually liking touchwiz tho, if they would let us customize the notifications toggle would be amazing
