My mom is going to visit Canada for a week, just wondering if she texts me back here in the US, will she be charged for some type of international texting fee. Will any phone usage for calls be charged a fee as well?

bump, anyone?
it depends on the plan your mom has...if she doesnt have a specific plan Canada or international plan, odds are she'll be charged for her texts and calls as roaming fees.
I think I paid $0.40 per text when I was in Toronto. Also how far up will she be? When I was in Niagara Falls in January, I still had AT&T service, and only when I lost my service for a second, it switched to Rogers, but then I just turned the radio off and on and I was back on AT&T.

Simple question which I can't find the answer to on the Telus website:
I live in the Toronto area and am with Telus. I am going to Montreal for a week. Will I have to pay any extra fees if I use my phone there (calls, texts, web surfing, any data usage etc.) ? I'm pretty sure roaming fees only occur outside of Canada but there may be other fees Telus is hiding from me...
Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays
You're actually posting in the wrong forum section!!
But in theory unless you have a canada plan by itself, then yes you will pay for roaming fees, at least that's how it is with rogers, so i don't see why it would be different with the other telcos. Text messages however, should be free within canada, if i'm not mistaken.
I'm with Telus as well. The only extra charges you should see is long distance charges for your calls. As long as your phone is logged into the Telus network which should be the case for most of Canada, then there is no roaming charges for data or voice.
So I understand that when you make a call over wifi that you are using your plan minutes (I have no problem with that). My question though is when does it know to pull from your anytime minutes as oppose to your unlimited off peak?
Case in point I have a plan with 500 anytime minutes. After 9pm my calls are free (off peak). Now if I travel from Boston (where I live) to San Diego...my off peak minutes do not kick in until 9pm local San Diego time (again makes sense as I am using the network there).
But lets say I travel to Ireland and decide to make a call using the wifi option....T-mobile will have no way of knowing (I presume) or care for that matter that I am using internet in Ireland to make the call...Also, Ireland is 5 hours ahead of Boston (my home town)so my question is....will they pull minutes from my account based upon what time it is in Boston or when you make a wifi call will they always pull those minutes from your anytime bucket?
Thoughts?

Customer service told me that they go by IP address. If it's an international IP address they claim they will charge international rates. Not sure if it's just a bluff but that seems to be their official response to international wifi calling.
That would be nuts if they were to charge you international rates when you are using a hotspot oversees. Presumably it is costing them nothing for the call to be routed back to the US.

Yeah, and they still charge us a butt-load for a few KB of SMS/MMS, when it should be cheap data. just sayin...
Wifi calling is all billed as domestic. If you call from germany, it shows up as a call originating from the united states. As long as you're on wifi, it's a domestic call. This is direct from t-mobile confirmed through their higher level customer service(the people who actually give out correct information), as well as posted on their website.
Also, I spent 3 days last week in Düsseldorf for work and I returned to no international fees. They don't need to charge international fees because they're not using anyone's towers.
Turn off data. Turn on wifi. Make some calls. Laugh at everyone else's bill. That's what I do.

Could you provide a link for this? I can't find it anywhere (which seems to be the reason for so many posts about this)...
Post your plan if you think u have a good deal with Rogers. I'd like to compare to see what's possible. Please post in a format similar to mine. I'll start:
500 Daytime
Evenings and Weekends @ 6
Caller ID
Voicemail
Unlimited texting (SMS & MMS)
6 gb data
Unlimited internal company calling
Total = $50 tax and saf in
Not bad, but my turn,
AT&T:
450 anytime with rollover
Unlimited AT&T to AT&T
5000 nights and weekends
20c per text
UNLIMITED DATA
Total: 54.99+tax
Verizon wireless:
450 anytime
Unlimited Verizon to verizon
Unlimited nights and weekends
20c per text
UNLIMITED 4G LTE DATA (Better than home internet, when it works.)
Total= 56+tax
2X unlimited data is good incase of home internet fail.
Nice, but check thread title lol. I KNOW American plans are better, Canadians get overcharged for everything, because we only have a big 2, Rogers and Bell. More competition = better prices states side
Honestly, Rogers is a big time ripper. The amount they charge for some of this stuff is just absurd.

I will never go back with Rogers with their incredibly high prices and their customer serivce beyond sucks. I'd recommend Telus if I had to choose between the top 3.
Rogers Line 1:
Unlimited Voice - Canada Wide (no Canada Roaming, no zones)
Unlimited Text and MMS - Intern/US/Canada Wide
Unlimited Long distance - US/Canada
LTE 10GB Data - Canada Wide (no Canada Roaming on data)
Visual Voice Mail
Call Display with Caller ID
Ring backs
Total: 89.24+tax
Rogers Line 2:
Unlimited Voice - Canada Wide (no Canada Roaming, no zones)
Unlimited Long distance - US/Canada
Unlimited Text and MMS - Intern/US/Canada Wide
Call Display with Caller ID
Total: 48.30 + Tax

Had Telus, no reason to get it if you are using the phone in Canada only, plans are more expensive than Rogers, network is worst, phones are not good, customer service is not even close to Rogers. Rogers has it's problems but much better value.
If you don;t like any of big three, just buy the phone and use ChatR or Kodo if you need lots of data
P.S.ChatR/Fido=Rogers, Koodo=Telus, Virgin is Bell now
The rest independent once are not even close to the network standards you get from big Three.
I had no complaints with Telus when I had them, customer service was awesome compared to Rogers, I know everyone has different experiences with their companies but I loved Telus...haven't kept up with the plans the big three are offering though.

in the past two years, Rogers and Bell are way ahead.
I never had problems with Telus, the only problem is the plan i had for North America was 250 min = $120, and they would not give me even 10% off after 10 years of service, i switched to AT&T 450=$69 + roll over.
the other problem Telus has no unlimited plans and they would not honer it since others started having it. Where as Rogers did.
What plan do you have with Telus?
I don't have a plan with Telus right now as I'm in Atlanta till August and when I usually when I go back to Toronto I just get their prepaid sim since I only stay for a month. The plan I had before with Telus was a student plan but I can't remember the specifics...I'll check out what everyone is offering when I get back since some other new plan will be out.
Haha Robbers.. Finally out of a contract, so I'm going prepaid. So long as there's wifi everything is stellar
Sorry first time trying a phone other then cdma. If i get the galaxy note 2 on att when it comes out and order a straight talk sim can i just slip it into the att galaxy note 2 and have hspa+ working. I want to try straight talk first because i here good and bad stories and if it sucks i can just cancel my contract within 14 days for att. Atleast so i can try out the note 2 to see if i like it. Once again i never had a sim card phone so im kinda clueless if i can swap them freely for tmobile and att phones or if i have to get an unlocked international version.
If you buy an AT& T phone, it will indeed work with an AT& T SIM card from ST (without being unlocked).
However, if I read your post correctly, you're going to get the phone on (an) AT& T subsidized (plan) then put a ST SIM in it? You DO realize that you will then have to pay AT& T a monthly fee and still pay ST their fee (even is it's month to month without a contract)....that makes no sense. You're paying an extra 45$ a month that you don't have to, on top of AT& T' s monthly fees....

Lol i know im just wanted to get the note 2 to try and try out straight talks sim for att and see within 14 days if they cancel or slow my speeds like i hear so many people say. I guess i could just buy the phone at att without a contract to right? And use it for 14 days to see if i like it and return it if i dont

Yes. It really depends on your area and how you set the APN (with or without proxy), that dictates speed. (Mostly area). ST on the AT&T side is pretty strict on data USAGE though. Most have found that staying under a 100MB per day/2GB per month is acceptable. Any more and you can not only be throttled but, they can (and will) shut off your service without notice or refund.
That being said, if your are aware of the cons to ST, many have found that the service works well for them and they are extremely happy with the price.
If you live in an area that T-Mobile has refarmed their 1900mHz band to HSPA+ you can get a T-Mobile ST (and use it on "4G") (or a T-Mobile SIM, prepaid or otherwise) and use that phone (unlocked only of course) that way. Some have found the T-Mobile side of ST to be more lenient with data usage policies.
If you don't talk much (and your area has been refarmed and your phone unlocked) the 30$ plan (only available at Wal-Mart or on T-Mobile.com) with 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 5GB data is a another option.

Good info here. To add to it, you can check for your area being refarmed if it has T-Mobile 3g on your network scan. Or you can check airportal.de where users have reported the refarm.

First of all: To moderators, sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, I did not know which one to post in.
Hi guys,
I have a couple questions, if anyone can answer them. I have been with Big Red (Verizon) for about 4 years now, and they are getting on my nerves, with unexplained charges on my bill and overage charges. I have decided to go with the Mobile Share 10GB plan with AT&T, as it is saving me 40+$ per month. My question is, will I be able to use my Verizon S4 on the AT&T network? I've read up a bit about it, and saw that people have gotten voice and HSPA+ data working, but not LTE data. Is there any APN settings I need to modify to get service? And has anyone gotten out of a contract without paying the ETF? If so, how did you do it? I have 3 lines that I want to move over, and all of them have around 1 year of contract time left, so the ETF at this point would be 250x3=750$. Eek.
Thanks guys for any input.
Pretty sure you won't get LTE. Different bands. afaik
750.00 is quite a bit. I would call ATT customer service and ask on that if no replies.
