Had Telus, no reason to get it if you are using the phone in Canada only, plans are more expensive than Rogers, network is worst, phones are not good, customer service is not even close to Rogers. Rogers has it's problems but much better value.
If you don;t like any of big three, just buy the phone and use ChatR or Kodo if you need lots of data
P.S.ChatR/Fido=Rogers, Koodo=Telus, Virgin is Bell now
The rest independent once are not even close to the network standards you get from big Three.
I had no complaints with Telus when I had them, customer service was awesome compared to Rogers, I know everyone has different experiences with their companies but I loved Telus...haven't kept up with the plans the big three are offering though.

in the past two years, Rogers and Bell are way ahead.
I never had problems with Telus, the only problem is the plan i had for North America was 250 min = $120, and they would not give me even 10% off after 10 years of service, i switched to AT&T 450=$69 + roll over.
the other problem Telus has no unlimited plans and they would not honer it since others started having it. Where as Rogers did.
What plan do you have with Telus?
I don't have a plan with Telus right now as I'm in Atlanta till August and when I usually when I go back to Toronto I just get their prepaid sim since I only stay for a month. The plan I had before with Telus was a student plan but I can't remember the specifics...I'll check out what everyone is offering when I get back since some other new plan will be out.

I don't need mobile internet but I'd like to have a small data plan when I'm on the go. I have Wi-Fi at home but I would love to get weather, Gmail, Hotmail and Wapedia (wikipedia mobile, try it!) when I need it without having to worry about breaking the limit.
I'm a student and I don't earn a lot (and I save most of it) so I don't really know which plan is the best.
I heard the 6GB for 30$ plan is available for WinMo but it's slightly too expensive (because we all know it's more like 40$ once they charge you the "being a human" fee and the "just for the sake of it" fee). What data plan did you take or suggest for me?
bell for like $10 has unlimited mobile browsing (internet) if you are willing to switch cost more initially. I think that $30 6 gig rogers plan ended aug 30th, unless they brought it back

The problem with switching from Rogers to Bell is that Rogers uses GSM phones with SIM Cards and Bell uses CDMA phones. You cannot take your Rogers device and use it on Bell or even Telus as far as I have been told and I have not been able to find any way of doing it though my searches.
you can now get $25 for 500 mb with rogers on no term. i know its only $5 less and its 5500 mb less, but if you dont need all that bandwidth, and every bit really does help, this as of not would be your best option. only dsp cheaper than this is 15$ for 2 mb + unltd email, but that is no good either.

I hate CDMA. They have great prices but you're attached to your carrier and unless you're with Sprint, it sucks.
I hadn't heard about the 25$ plan, that's interesting.
I might subscribe once I get a job with standard schedules.
Rogers(GSM) and Bell/Telus (CDMA) phones are NOT interchangeable. In the future, there are plans for Bell and Telus to migrate to GSM, but nobody I know is certain when. I would strongly advise against investing in a CDMA phone in Canada (or anywhere for that matter) as GSM has better coverage here.
Also, the 30$ 6gb plan has only expired for blackberry for sure. It was extended until 30th of September, then October 6th, and may still be going indefinitely.
The 6gb plan is only available on a 36 month term though, otherwise for $30 you are receiving 1gb, or for $25 you receive 500 mb

Not sure this is the response you want but we (my wife and I) went with Blacks Photo (yes they sell phones) and hooked up with Telus. Our plans are pretty cheap with 1 gig data, 200 anytime minutes and unlimited texting i believe. She got the galaxy s and I got the htc desire hd. Pretty much satisfied.

It was mainly refreshing because they didn't try to sell you stuff as a Phone Store, but as a store that ALSO sells phones (and didn't have all the sales pitches/buzzwords/etc to distract from the sale).
Bell has the best phones by far, plans are average. Koodo has the best plans, but mobilicity and virgin are right below it, and they have better phones.
Edit: oh ya and wind mobile is probably the same as koodo, but they have better phones, in fact they just got the optimus 2x.
I'm with Windmobile. Living in Oshawa. My plan is unlimited data, unlimited call, unlimited international text, call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail, call display for $40/month. Beat that!

I second the Rogers recommendation if you are looking at a contract.
I believe that they are not the place to go for pay per use (was told by friends...details unknown to me).
Reasons I like Rogers:
6 GB data plan
They don't seem to care or charge more for tethering
Very good coverage
Decent Customer service (compared to Bell or Telus)
Reasons was Rogers are not perfect
Phone selection is not great.
3 year contracts (I would prefer 2 year as this is a better representation of how long people keep phones in good condition).
I am also a long-time Fido customer (now belongs to Rogers) and still like some of their plans.

Just wondering why people choose a certain carrier. I'm on AT&T. For me, it's because I get a 23% discount off my monthly bill because of my employer/company. What are your reasons for being with X carrier?

I've been on T-Mobile for about a decade I think. T-Mobile's pricing is what attracted me as a customer. Their desperation is what keeps me. These guys will bend over backwards to keep me happy and have. I appreciate the things they've done for me that I see people on other carriers getting refused with. Such as very early upgrades just because I was unhappy with my current phone.
My carrier (telus) has better service while traveling yet after signing with them i found i have no service in my school -_- thankfully i'm out of there next yea so i''m cool with it and I got a good loyality plan out of them (i hope)

I have Sprint. It was more of a legacy thing for me. My parents had it so I got it.
Plus they do a 15% discount for my work and were the cheapest single plan with the discount.
Of course now that I'm married, the plans of other carriers are a bit closer in price. Even with unlimited data, I only use maybe 1.5 or 2 gigs at the most per month, so it's not as worth it to shell out as it once was.
Many of my family and friends are in the same network. That's why.

Because I was an employee of my carrier up until June of this year and got waived the activation fee, 50% off my bill and a 1-year contract but 2-year pricing on my 4G phone. I also wanted to get grandfathered into unlimited data which is worth its weight in gold! No throttling here nor snooping into my 3rd party tethering unlike ATT.
2. Reception - In my area AT&T has the best service, followed by Sprint and then a large drop to Verizon. Causes me to get a bit irked when people say AT&T is universally bad and Verizon can do no wrong since I constantly see the exact opposite, but whatever.
6. Loyalty - My family has been on AT&T since the Cingular days, so we're grandfathered into an ancient family plan that's really cheap. If we were to switch carriers our bill would go way up.

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but I've noticed a lot of people being caught by surprise when they hear how little I pay for my data plan. I'd like to make a list of all prepaid plans, how much you pay, what you get, and what the coverage is for smartphones. Let's go!
Virgin Mobile ($35/month = 300 mins, unlimited txt+data)
Pros: Cheap, simple plans, good customer service
Cons: Not many high-end phones, have to buy VM branded phone (can't bring your own), Sprint coverage, expensive if you talk a LOT
T-Mobile's 4g plan ($30/month = 100 mins, unlimited txt+3g data, 5gb 4g data)
Pros: Perfect for people who talk very little, tons of fast data without throttling, can bring your own phone or buy through 3rd party (ebay, craigslist, amazon, etc)
Cons: Low minutes, if you go over your minutes, you are automatically upgraded to the next teir plan which only includes 300mb data and cannot switch back unless you buy a new sim card (aka, confusing plan), T-Mobile coverage
Straight Talk's BYOD Sim Card ($45/month = unlimited voice+data, ~2gb HSPA+ data)
Pros: AT&T coverage, unlimited minutes, can bring virtually any gsm device (offer both t-mobile and at&t sim cards)
Cons: Customer service is horrible, plans and coverage confusing*
*Straight Talk has deals with all major carriers, which is why they have several different coverage maps. For the prepaid android phones you buy from them, you get Sprint coverage. If you choose the BYOD sim plan, you get either T-Mobile or AT&T coverage (depending on which sim card you choose). Some of their prepaid dumbphones use Verizon's towers, so you'll see that coverage map, too. Basically, get an AT&T sim and you get AT&T coverage. Not too bad.
Also, it's worth noting that T-Mobile and Virgin are both very clear about data limits and what happens when. Straight Talk is a lot less clear, basically saying if you don't tether or stream, you have unlimited data, but if they catch you using a TON of data they do have the right to kick you off their plan. If you want to stream pandora 16 hours a day, this isn't the plan for you.
Please feel free to add to this list or make corrections if you see them. I wrote this in response to an article on Cnet today, and am basically just copying and pasting. I know there are more carriers, but there are the three I personally have experience with. If you have experience and know a carrier inside and out, send a reply! I'd like to eventually get all prepaid carriers in the US.

There's also RedPocket. They run on AT&T's network. They have payAsYouGo by the minute and PayMonthly. I'm use Their Unlimited Talk, Text and 2GB Data plan for $59.99. I would suggest them if Straight Talk's nebulous data limits don't work for you and you prefer AT&T's network. I use RedPocket in my HTC One X....

Good stuff, but there is a little bit of misinformation here. Straight Talk has two different BYOD sim cards: one runs off of T-Mobile's network and one off of AT&T's.
With that in mind, is there any compelling reason to spend an extra $15/month? (Not trying to be a ****, just wondering if customer service is better, if they subsidize phones, or some other benefit over straight talk.)

we use verizon and TMO for newer android phones (though i was not able to catch up since i transfered to AT&T, last time i was there the LG Optimus Black runs on TMO networks)

they are actually the front-liners and will recieve every given call
30% of tier 1 reps are actually on training (new hires on the job with no experience)
50% of them are less than 6 months tenure
So you think if I switch to ST and do just that I would get good CS?

Yeah. I like T-Mobile but my phone doesn't get 3g. Im hoping the 1900 refarm will fix that. The only other downside is I have 100 minutes, no nights and weekends. I can use Sipdroid but I hate having two numbers and don't use my GV number because it doesn't do MMS or things like how you can text your Facebook status to 32665. Idk. Sorry I just was ranting.

tracfone does not contract a center in india cuz they prefer south america for the reason that the head office of our center is in mexico and tracfone is a mexican company
yea, south american agents who are our contact partners does sound indian-like, they are mostly in port related, fraud and android support group,

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my first post.
I know they do, however they don't seem to be quite as strict with data use on T-Mobile's network. Also, most people I know prefer Simple Mobile as the MVNO of choice for T-Mobile.
I think the extra 15$ is worth it to have a defined data allotment. On HoFo there are complaints of ST harassing them over as little 1.3GB of usage in a month. I don't like nebulous ToS.....

This seems to be a pretty terrible deal, and here's my logic (correct me if I'm wrong):
Let's compare to Virgin Mobile, since they also use Sprint's Network. So with VM, you pay for data and voice, and basically get charged $0 per text. Let's do some math!
Assuming you're going with VM's $35/month plan, you're getting 100 minutes and 2.5gb of data (until they throttle you, after which is unlimited. But let's pretend throttled data doesn't exist and they hard capped you instead). Let's look at how much it would cost to use 100 minutes and 2.5gb data on Platinumtel:
100 mins x $0.05/minute = $5
2.5gb data x $0.10/mb x (1000mb/gb) = $250
Total: $5 + $250 = $255/month
Keep in mind this doesn't include texts, which are "free" through VM. Now, let's say you're big on talking. Let's jump up to Virgin's next plan, 1200 minutes for $45.
1200 mins x $0.05/minute = $60
Total: $60 + $255 = $315/month
And the it's really downhill from there (VM has a final plan, which is $55/month with unlimited minutes, but you get the idea).
This plan also fares very poorly against every other prepaid plan, unless you don't do much of anything other than use wifi with your phone and simply need something for emergencies.
But still, if you use 0 minutes, 0 texts, and only 450 mb per month, you're paying as much as you would for Straight Talk, or Virgin's 2nd plan, or a host of other more competitive plans. While pay as you go smartphone plans are cool, this is just way too expensive for what you get.

Keep in mind this doesn't include texts, which are "free" through VM. Now, let's say you're big on talking. Let's jump up to Virgin's next plan, 1200 minutes for $45.
1200 mins x $0.05/minute = $60
Total: $60 + $255 = $315/month
And the it's really downhill from there (VM has a final plan, which is $55/month with unlimited minutes, but you get the idea).
This plan also fares very poorly against every other prepaid plan, unless you don't do much of anything other than use wifi with your phone and simply need something for emergencies.
But still, if you use 0 minutes, 0 texts, and only 450 mb per month, you're paying as much as you would for Straight Talk, or Virgin's 2nd plan, or a host of other more competitive plans. While pay as you go smartphone plans are cool, this is just way too expensive for what you get.

This is true. PAYGO is only good for people who either don't use their phone alot or are next to WIFI enough to satisfy their needs.
I personally like to only pay for what I use and nothing more.
I don't need much data, because I'm either at work or near WIFI.
BTW, PTel has monthly plans also.
If I had WIFI at work, I could probably spend less that $2 a month.

That's a bit incorrect. If you run out of minutes they charge you $.05 a minute. They won't change your plan.

I'm currently in the group of people still using an unlocked phone (Galaxy SII GT-i9100) on AT&T's $10/mo medianet plan. My wife uses an iPhone 4s on the grandfathered $30/mo unlimited plan. Between the two of us, 550 minutes, and unlimited text, our bill comes to $125.20 every month. It's not bad at all and I have no complaints. However, I'd like an exit strategy in case AT&T yanks the medianet plan as they've recently done to SGS3 and Galaxy Nexus owners.
Two of my options are to accept the $30/mo 3GB limit, or move to the 4GB family share plan. My wife typically uses 200-500MB of data and I average about 1.2GB a month with spikes up to 2GB. Getting raised to the $30/plan brings our bill to about $145/mo (our discount seems to negate the taxes), whereas going to the 4GB family share plan will put us at about $150, and takes away my wife's unlimited. Also, me going to the $10 medianet plan was out of principal, as I previously had the $30/mo unlimited plan, suspended my account during deployment, and then AT&T took it away, claiming that "military lose their grandfathered plans on deployments." I know that's not true, I just got a bad CS rep, but that's what I was told and I've been paying AT&T back ever since.
So, my other options are to try another GSM carrier. I'm in the Seattle area now and T-Mobile has excellent coverage up here, and by proxy, their MVNO carrier, Simple Mobile. In the case of Simple Mobile we could save quite a bit of money as well. But, as many people know, neither the iPhone 4S nor the SGSII support AWS bands. However, T-Mobile has been switching over to 1900mhz lately. Ideally, our phones should already support 3G/fake 4G in this area on T-Mobile. Can any Simple Mobile users comment on whether or not SM is using this new (to them) frequency?
Lastly, in the case of not being able to use 3G/fake 4G on Simple Mobile, are there any other GSM MVNOs worth considering?
I believe Straight Talk is unlimited everything for $45/month, and has support for (your choice of) AT&T, T Mobile, and Verizon (?).
So if you were to take both your phones, dumb them on two different ST plans for $45, you'd end up spending $90 a month for both your phone. Blam!
(Btw, I heard something about cutting you off or throttling at 3 to 4 GB of data usage, but since that's not in your range, I wouldn't worry)

T-Mobile refarmed Seattle already I think (check airportal.de to verify) so I would switch to them. If you both get on the $30 plan and port your number to Google Voice you can use Talkatone or GrooveIP to talk on the phone. And if you get stuck on Edge Talkatone still works good.

Two lines, 1000 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data w/throttling after 2GB for $79.98/mo. No throttling if you pay $99.98/mo. In both cases, I'm eligible for a 15% military discount, unlike prepaid plans like Simple Mobile and straight Talk. However, I believe T-Mobile hides more below the line fees, making it nearly a wash in terms of advertised price. The difference being, unlike SM and ST, T-Mo won't kill my account for using more than 2Gb on an unlimited plan.
Also, they require a 2-year contract with a $200/line cancellation fee despite it being "bring your own phone," which is some straight up bull****.
As of today, I can save $25/mo moving to their unlimited plan, or $45/mo if I go to the 2GB throttling plan. I'd prefer the unlimited, so at $25/mo, it's only $300/year saved. However, I'd get slightly less coverage, and my wife wouldn't get her $200 iPhone upgrade every 2 years, which pretty much negates the savings (and she would miss her visual voice mail). So, unless AT&T rate jacks me by taking me off Medianet, we're not switching to this plan.
