MIUI 4: Would you use it? - Acer Iconia A500

The MIUI patchrom was updated today to support the MIUI 4 (ICS) base. According to the README in the MiCode repo it looks like we meet the prerequisites to use the patchrom. I've used MIUI on my handset before so I wouldn't deny it on my tablet to say the least. The features are great and there is no end to customization of the ROM. The launcher isn't optimized for tablets but I guess Trebuchet or the stock ICS launcher is still usable. Hopefully a dev will hook us up (or if it doesn't require building the whole OS maybe even I can do it).
So I guess the question is: Would you use MIUI on your Iconia?

Hells yes

as long as a tablet launcher works, i would try it. i didn't spend all this money on a tablet for it to be a gigantic phone.

No. I want to use Android, not an iOS wannabe.

I couldn't disagree more. Miui is one of the most customizable roms available, ios is built to allow almost no customization.

Yea I agree it may share "some ios similarities" but all in all it is a very customizable android Rom I've used miui on my inc and inspire plus my old nook but took it off my nook after 24 hrs of use because sizing was terrible and it was a huge phone. But if a dev manages to create a miui masterpiece as well as the devs over at miuiandroid/miui.us bring it on!

If you think the UI is all that is different (or at the very least, all that MIUI has to offer), you've probably never used MIUI. Or at least not long enough to discover what it has to offer.
Let's not forget it's still Android at heart. And as far as Android goes, the level of customization is far beyond any other offering. You can turn off whatever you don't like theme-wise and use whatever launcher you're currently enjoying. If you're going to judge it on UI alone, then you're missing out on a whole lot.
EDIT: Of course, I have no idea how well it even works on tablets. I don't know if the MIUI team really considered the tablet aspects of ICS when making version 4. But like I said, any suitable tablet launcher should still work perfectly fine.

While MIUI does allow for you to tweak the way icons and the lockscreen look, the base functionality and user experience are heavily influenced by iOS. A fresh install of MIUI looks strikingly like an iOS device, with the addition of a clock widget.

But if I was to turn off all of the MIUI UI options and use a different launcher, why would I want to use MIUI at all? Why not use a stripped down version of a stock rom?
Personally, I didn't see the appeal of MIUI. Sure I could download a ton of themes but they never were well designed. I wind up making my own themes anyway, so I would rather have a ROM that was as lean as possible and theme it as I need. If you like MIUI, juice by you.. but I've tried it and it wasn't for me.

i would give it a go, i might look like IOS until you start applying themes.

MiUI = iOS wanabee ????
I think some people does not use or never use MiUI....
but anyway...
MiUI on tablet I am not sure that will be that good... Since they are more PHONE DEVICE oriented...
PS:
Acer Liquid Metal running 2.3.9 MiUI perfectly, nothing iOS like on it...

I think what FloatingFatMan meant was that MIUI feels like it is trying to mimic iOS. I would have to agree with FloatingFatMan on this point...it feels too much like an iPhone interface.

Please could you show me how it's iPhone interface like ?
because I don't see the iPhone feeling on my MiUI.....
-> and by the way iPhone copied the Samsung interface as well....
if it's just about square icons on a grid and a ribbon on the lower part A lot of phone interface so are iPhone(samsung) like...
Just to be clear I am not an iPhone hater, I just bored about people who think iPhone (Apple) is a revolution and are the one create all.... nope... they just improve, or copy and got a strong marketing behind that's it.
So if I take my MiUI interface I got
- Widget (iPhone does not have that)
- A neat slide swipe animation between each screen (with effect or not)
- A way to can change really everything inside (wallpaper, starting animation, lockscreen, etc...)
- A music player directly accessible from the lockscreen (double tap on the time)
- no slide to unlock from left to right (but can be installed via a theme named iPhone...)
- etc..
well I got more than expected on my stuttering Liquid Metal... miUI give it a new life, and memory freedom.
so let me know how it's same I will be pleased to see.

To me, the overall layout just reminds me of iOS, and I'm simply not a fan of that style. I'm not saying it is bad, just not my cup of tea. I understand it is still Android underneath it (AOSP) and it is customizable, but I guess the way the launcher is laid out just has the feel of iOS, at least to me.
But everyone has their preferences.

iOS and MIUI are not same.
maybe a very old version of miui theme was with the same background (wow that makes all the feeling... iBackground?)
Similarities or Same ?
Similarities... Oh my god yes there is ... but since Apple didn't created the "User Interface" of phones neither "Icons" we cannot compare MiUI with iOS... they got idea from something else before as well.
stop comparing all against iOS or iPhone... that will be better.
1) it's not iOSlike
2) it's android
3) we can change everything we want in Miui... and make it looks like iPhone if we want just by applying a theme... but the default theme is not iPhone like at all.. really not at all..
Please people, use the things before making statement...

When are we going to get a legit update for android?

So I know that gingerbread is around the corner and it's supposed to have some tweaks to the OS, etc etc, but when will we see an update which fully optimizes android to be as efficient as it't capable of.
I made a thread a while back dealing with how fast android is moving hardware wise, with the dual cores coming out and all but from my perspective increasing the CPU power of our phones by adding more processors is a complete gimmick, at least for now. I want to see android polished like ios, enough with the glitter and gleam.
P.S I'm not mentioning Honey Comb here because that's optimized for tablets, so most cell phones won't end up seeing it I believe. I want to know what comes after gingerbread and/if it will be a legit upgrade to android, not just a few minor tweaks here and there.
For what it's worth, i'v heard very good things about Honey Comb being utilized on tablets and how polished and smooth it is. I'd like to see that on future android phones.

I am using Miui and I love it. I also us go launcher and launcher pro, both of which are phenomenal.
I would choose android any day over anything apple, that's a given for me. However, even the biggest android fans have to admit that our OS is not nearly as polished as ios or even WP7. I'm not talking about the looks of the OS or even the "smoothness". I'm talking about optimizing the system so that it utilizes it's processor(s) and GPU to their full extent, rather than just upping the amp and hoping that fixes everything...
I think Froyo was a big step up for us, we just need more. Hopefully as android matures, future updates will optimize android further.

[Q] CM7 Roms Vs. GB Sense Roms?! Lets Clear our way (devs. and all users)

All of us know that Android development on our HD2s' has reached a very great time and now we are running the roms and android versions that very few new devices experience them officially.
The reason i am creating this thread is this that...after using CM7 roms for while (nearly 5 month) yesterday i finally switched to dungphp sense 3.0 rom (v1.7) and at the first sight i see my HTC HT2 (the evergreen Phone) alive with colors. because as much as we know the bigest annoying thing about CM7 roms is the pale color look and dark mode that they have...
but sense style and more colorful shapes which reminds us of a original HTC phones, really has increased my interest to HD2 once more time
but besides all this, the sense roms ar very slow and as far as as all of us know...glitches and some other bugs are really annoying.
and this happens where, that all CM7 roms now are really bug free and suer fast on our HD2, which makes the LEo more than a Native android device!!! (as my own experience when my friend see my HD2 running Android (CM7) and comparing that with their own devices like Desire,Desire HD or Desire S...my device is as fasst as them and sometimes more interesting due to CM7 special features) but with CM7 my device screen is like black and white infront of them, and it reaally annoys you!
.
.
.
so after saying this, i want to ask a questions from you and esp. the greatest HD2 developers: Whats the best way for HD2 android development in this (as i think) critical time? i mean developing CM7 roms, which are really 99% bug free and super fast to a more colorfull and better screen performance or developing Sense 3.0 roms to make them faster and trying to see no glitches?
and WP7? i think it has no chances against android...just great 720p playing!
.
.
.
i think this thread will really help us, by knoing the idea of all HD2 Android users. so please enter here and leave your comments to make our HD2 ever better.

Well i don't really get your problem. Why don't you just use a theme for cm7. Think there are a lot out there in the xda forums and i'm pretty sure there are some colourful under them. Or just try a miui build. They are fast and stable like cm and can be skinned and customized like no other ROM and it's really easy...
And there always will be both. The cm roms and the sense ROMs. I think there are more than enough devs for our hd2 so that they don't have to concentrate all on improving one kind of ROM. Some of us also like the clean and not so colourful stuff.
Sure, but MIUI roms are somehow just beautifull and not useful...there more different from the way we knew android. I have tried them but after just few days dissapointed and changed to CM7 and now sense 3.0...
Yes themes for CM7 may be a good choice but,i meant the total base of CM7 roms are dead colors.

One thing I will say since I've tried MIUI before, is the great many themes for it. There are what seems like an endless number of all different kinds of themes for MIUI. But I still think my dislike for MIUI stems from the lack of elegance it has. An example of this, even though it can be replaced, of course, is the stock MIUI analog clock. It just looks pitiful to me. But it's indicative of the whole system. There just doesn't seem to be any elegance or refinement to it.
i have to disagree. i also don't like the miui launcher and use go launcher with it, but it's much more functional than cm7 or something else. for example the dockbar with all the quicklinks on the second page, flashlight when pressing home button while the phone is locked, the messaging app, theme program. you can do much more with a rom that has the miui base and if you don't like the look of the iphone just install another launcher than you have your elegance back.
first i thought the same about miui but after using it for a while there is no alternative for me in terms of functionality and customizability.
and the most important thing, it's fast and only has 2-5mAh in standby.

sure it is true...when we install a MIUI rom, are HD2 seems just beautifull with that so much of themes but as you said the very first features we benefit in our CM7 or Sense roms are lost in this kind of roms...
even the MIUI launcher is not so customizable, as an example you can not make a shortcut for your word, pdf or... files!...
anyway i don't think MIUI would be the future for our HD2s

I'm going to have to eat my words. I downloaded an SD build of MIUI, the 3dak version, and am seeing elegant operation. It is actually compelling me to like it. The flashlight shortcut is brilliant! It is exactly what a flashlight should be; right there easily accessible without fumbling in the darkness to find it.
Sorry to keep the offtopic going but regarding MIUI I have only one oppinion.
It's great, it looks ok ( maybe a little to playful for me ) but the gradient banding is a great turn off for me. When they will do a dithered version specially for hd2 or ( so help us God ) they fix the banding issue, I will give a second thought to MIUI.
Oh. And facebook calendar sync.

What Feature do you have in cm7 Settings that miui doesn't have? Please tell me. I only know overclocking and therefore i was using setcpu even on cm ROMs. There is not one feature i'm missing from cm on miui. And yes these small things like quick access to flashlight from the lockscreen make a ROM special for me because it's just useful.
I didn't say miui is the future for our hd2, i said that there's no reason for the devs concentrating on a single type of ROM cause so much people are working on hd2 android.
Miui would just be the answer of the things you were complaining about.

Can you explain what banding issue you mean? I never heard of that or experienced any problems i didn't have on other builds.
Ok, some might say this is picky.
Gradient banding is when the screen displays more colors than the screen actually supports at that time.
More details here: http://origin.arstechnica.com/news.media/Colour_banding_example01.png
And creates that stepping effect that really looks terrible. Yes, it has no effect on stability, functionality or anything else. It's just a visual artifact that for me makes it quite clear that it's just a port.
The best way to see the banding is to enter the dialer in MIUI . Give it a try and report back if you see smooth gradients. I would be surprised.
thanks. ok your right. never really noticed it. the ring of the sense 3 lockscreen for example has also gradients but there is no banding. i also can see it in the stock launcher but because i don't use it i don't care.
really never noticed that.

so,we are not making a war man...be calm please , we are just discussing...
so about the features...e.g: LOckscreen gestures (which makes mopre than that shortcut for flashlight in MIUI,because you can acces just everything by adding a gesture in your lock screen not just flashlight ;-) ), other features like tablet tweaks, so many features for light sensor and display that MIUI does not have! or many others ;-)
but i am not saying MIUI is bad!! beceuse the first time i my self installed it, i really enjoyed alot ,esp. from the way it looks and make our HD2s' alive and very colorful and goodlooking with so lots of theme stuff.
but the most annoying things are this that its taking its origin from the IOS and not android, we love android, and we all believe that its more powefull than IOS because its open source. even if we use a different launcher still the setting is just the way i said...any way,

You know what I like about CM7 ? It so fast and useful !!!"
You know what I like about MIUI ? It look so pretty and feels like an iPhone !!!"
Please, just be grateful for the versatility of our devices and to the devs still working on it, although it's getting old.
The rest is just personal tastes and doesn't deserve to be discussed...or polled...

if you use this features it's ok but i never needed them. tablet tweaks are for tablets and i personally don't like my statusbar on the bottom. but this is all personal liking. i also never needed additional display or light sensor settings. sure it's good to have it implemented but i never missed it on other roms. and most of this are things that can also be done by a third party app. the only thing i would like to have from cm are the toggle additions where you can automatically switch off 3g when your connected to wifi and something like that. these are really useful but most other things are not really needed for a phone. at least i don't need them.
miui just looks like ios. it's still open source and who cares how the settings look when you installed another launcher? i go to settings once per month or less. and i think that they aren't bad on miui. you can find what your searching for very fast.
but as said this is all personal taste and there are enough developers to make roms for the tastes of every people, so there's no need to concentrate on developing one kind of rom.

it does and i said the same thing but iv been running it for a month now, switching off to new sense roms but within a hour im back it works way to good. All the sense roms out battery life sucks, it lags, and even after switching to a new kernel seems something breaks like wifi.

love sense, but ran it for so long it got boring, went to MIUI then found out it had no app drawer like iOS, and i didnt like that experience lol, now im running an AOSP rom
Really can't stand Sense anything. I tried the MIUI for about 10 minutes. Definitely not for me. CM7 does everything I need it to.

MIUI is ios if ios was designed really, really well. It may "simply" look the same, but it isn't remotely close. I highly recommend you try it before you bash it for not having an app drawer.

i did try it, for almost a day, but the feel was too much like iOS, i get what ur saying, but it really doesnt feel like i have an android on my hands if u kno what i mean
I'm using the MIUI Tim and I love it I guess my only issue is that I'm not experiencing that long battery life everyone is speaking of am I doing something wrong... help lol I have the cyotogen 7 kernel if that helps
sttonydamunsta luv my evo4g
I wasn't thrilled with the lack of the app drawer but that's easily fixed by loading another launcher. When I was using MIUI it was Launcher Pro.
MIUI looks like iOS after a fresh flash, but it doesn't have to. That's what I love most about it, I can theme every aspect of it. I use Alt Drawer, so I have an app drawer.
Plus it's smooth, has a lot of neat apps, and is different than any other rom I've seen. I switched to it because I was bored with CM7 and didn't like Sense. That was in April and I haven't looked back.

i tried that, but the more apps i put in, the laggier it got for some reason, and it was really cramped, kind of annoying to try to find an app lol
I am on the dislike MIUI bandwagon too. I'm not going to bash it as I agree it has some sick features. The killer for me was the app drawer and 4g. I think if I gave it more than a day I could customize it to my liking but I just like Sense and all the Sense features.
I thought about maybe a custom launcher but then I thought "why change from a Sense rom that is native to my HTC phone that guarantees GPS ect to work by default and install one that isn't just to put a launcher over it and defeat the purpose"
I got bored with Sense launcher and Rosie so I currently have ADW ex installed and still have flawless gps, the dialer I like, everything synced how I like, email app I like apps where I want ect... right from the start.
I could do that with MIUI or CM but then I have to install DialerOne, GoSMS and a few other things to get what I like. I can't stand any of the AOSP dialer and sms layouts.
If I didn't live in such a 4g rich area I would probably give MIUI the turn it deserves but that is a killer before I start. It's also what's really irking me about the new Sense 3.5 Roms. Runny~Bliss(i think) hybrid looks gorgeous to me..... but I'll wait it out.
Miui isn't a bad rom at all. At first I refuse to use it because it did remind me of my old iPhone. But ended up trying it and loving it.
I get better battery life with miui compared to sense. Plus there is alot of built in apps and features to miui that is bad ass. And who can forget all the sweet customizing you can do to it. For example just did this setup below a few minutes ago...
One somewhat downside for me is the no 4G but then again that only effects me when I go visit my parents up state. That's when I backup Miui and switch to a sense Rom problem solved haha.

MIUI is AMAZING. I love it. And the theming? NO ROM beats it! Its fantastic the way you can make your phone look. The only reason why I won run it, is because of the laggyness of the keyboard.
Here is my current setup of MIUI, and it damn sure doesn't look like iOS to me...
BTW, my GPS snaps perfectly, syncing all 8 SATS in about a millisecond. I really don't get why people make comments without knowing how to do something.
Maybe it does look a bit like iOS. But I don't care, it's still the smoothest and best ROM I've flashed on my Evo. (and particularly this week's build is quite stable so far).

Not sure if that was directed to my gps comment but either way...... It's a know fact that aosp based roms are more subject to gps issue and have had numerous "fixes" posted to resolve.
It's not a matter of what I KNOW how to do it what i WANT to deal with. I never said aosp or miui were bad by any means. Just not my cup.
Posted a long time ago in the future.
I used to think the same. Now, I have customized Miui to my liking by creating my own app drawer and installing a new theme via the built in theme manager. It is very fast, very advanced, highly customizable and finally pulled me away from Sense (though I do have two Sense Roms in my Boot Manager slots).

pure ICS on galaxy s3?

mod edit: i don't like the touch wiz UI
Lol at least give it a chance before making such a claim. Use it when it comes out then we can say if it is shyte... There are other launchers like apex and etc..
ok good point, i like the concepts though like if you are messaging then put to your ear and it calls, but im talking about the pure visual aspect of it, the icons look like they come from a 2001 nokia colour phone
Icons are always customisable though with root access. I always wonder why people complain about a UI or skin when it can always be changed or removed.
Ive never used any of the previous versions of touchwiz for more than a few minutes at a time on friends' phones but have always preferred it over the other mfr UIs ive tried. Its actually one of the things im looking forward to with this.

pure aosp will take atleast a month or 2, team hacksung have not yet received enough donations for getting the mobile yet.
and guys the term "touchwiz" not only mentions the launcher but mentions the whole load of softwares customized by samsung like, fm radio, music player, camera app etc etc.

i don't want AOSP on it. It's damn boring. NO more vanilla for me. And the Nexus program is an epic fail, NOT the first to get updates.
I always use Go Launcher but will run with TW on the S3 to see how I like
What's wrong with TouchWiz, I would rank it second after TimeScape of Sony (dont like HTC Sense)
And I would give TouchWiz 4.0 the crown
vanilla rocks!
i got a warning for swearing, sorry for swearing
Pure ICS is definitely coming to the S3. Some developers have already said it.

Uh, yes, the Nexus lines ARE the first to get updates... Well, the GSM variants anyway. Don't whine about having a Nexus and not getting updates fast when you're on a stupid CDMA network with their closed source radio driver crap.
Look aosp is cool, but i am that type of human that i will hardly live with only one type of ui for more than two months, first there are themes and than its big jump (like tw->cm9 or cm9->MIUI....)....so i expect i will try to stick with stock as long as possible and than go out and try some modifications

Im going to change just one thing , I square icons at the bottom to stock ics, and that's it. Love the drop down toggles. And some of the touchwize apps I'll just not use.

I couldn't agree more to this!!!
No more carrier delays for me... and I really look forward to PURE AOSP! The closest I ever got to that was with CM 7 resp. CM 9 on my S2 and Nook tablets... and I liked it a lot!
Certainly better than st*pid HTC Sense..!
Can't wait for next week to arrive!!!!!!
why would you use a feature`less software like stock ics? i had galaxy nexus and it was boring ... tw may have bloat but it has nice features ... if you want stock buy google phone if you want sense buy htc ... simple...
plus if you look in the app drawer is ics stock like
It's a matter of preference. look at the stock ICS E-mail, Contacts and messaging apps. a combination of a Beautiful, modern design with the maximum possible functionality. It just looks, feels and works so well, exactly how a modern UI should. Google really hit the ball out of the park with holo.
Now look at the TW ones - they're basically the same FroYo ones used in the previous galaxies - they don't have that stremlined, modern look of stock ICS. They look dated and ancient and do not feel like ICS at all. The messaging app especially. Black background with grey borders and ugly buttons - and yellow and cyan chat bubbles.. seriously samsung?
having said that, TW does have a very, very good launcher - very smooth and very flexible - i have no issues with that. The TW UX launcher is even better in that regard. it's the core apps that piss me off because they look ugly and dated.

why do so many of you hate TouchWiz? TouchWiz is amazing!

i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

I was in CyanogenMod before ICS, now back to Samsung based ROM, but I replaced the bad AOSP apps, like phone and SMS with others from the market as nice or nicer than TW´s

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

Absolutely not true! CM is probably one of the most stable aosp roms. It will provide you (after some time passed for development) with superior performance, battery life and sometimes options like ui themes etc.
This is fact, not just user experience... but for everyone the roms they prefer the most. Personally looking forward to have dualboot and cm9 as primary rom...
