mod edit: i don't like the touch wiz UI
Lol at least give it a chance before making such a claim. Use it when it comes out then we can say if it is shyte... There are other launchers like apex and etc..
ok good point, i like the concepts though like if you are messaging then put to your ear and it calls, but im talking about the pure visual aspect of it, the icons look like they come from a 2001 nokia colour phone
Icons are always customisable though with root access. I always wonder why people complain about a UI or skin when it can always be changed or removed.
Ive never used any of the previous versions of touchwiz for more than a few minutes at a time on friends' phones but have always preferred it over the other mfr UIs ive tried. Its actually one of the things im looking forward to with this.

pure aosp will take atleast a month or 2, team hacksung have not yet received enough donations for getting the mobile yet.
and guys the term "touchwiz" not only mentions the launcher but mentions the whole load of softwares customized by samsung like, fm radio, music player, camera app etc etc.

i don't want AOSP on it. It's damn boring. NO more vanilla for me. And the Nexus program is an epic fail, NOT the first to get updates.
I always use Go Launcher but will run with TW on the S3 to see how I like
What's wrong with TouchWiz, I would rank it second after TimeScape of Sony (dont like HTC Sense)
And I would give TouchWiz 4.0 the crown
vanilla rocks!
i got a warning for swearing, sorry for swearing
Pure ICS is definitely coming to the S3. Some developers have already said it.

Uh, yes, the Nexus lines ARE the first to get updates... Well, the GSM variants anyway. Don't whine about having a Nexus and not getting updates fast when you're on a stupid CDMA network with their closed source radio driver crap.
Look aosp is cool, but i am that type of human that i will hardly live with only one type of ui for more than two months, first there are themes and than its big jump (like tw->cm9 or cm9->MIUI....)....so i expect i will try to stick with stock as long as possible and than go out and try some modifications

I couldn't agree more to this!!!
No more carrier delays for me... and I really look forward to PURE AOSP! The closest I ever got to that was with CM 7 resp. CM 9 on my S2 and Nook tablets... and I liked it a lot!
Certainly better than st*pid HTC Sense..!
Can't wait for next week to arrive!!!!!!
why would you use a feature`less software like stock ics? i had galaxy nexus and it was boring ... tw may have bloat but it has nice features ... if you want stock buy google phone if you want sense buy htc ... simple...
plus if you look in the app drawer is ics stock like
It's a matter of preference. look at the stock ICS E-mail, Contacts and messaging apps. a combination of a Beautiful, modern design with the maximum possible functionality. It just looks, feels and works so well, exactly how a modern UI should. Google really hit the ball out of the park with holo.
Now look at the TW ones - they're basically the same FroYo ones used in the previous galaxies - they don't have that stremlined, modern look of stock ICS. They look dated and ancient and do not feel like ICS at all. The messaging app especially. Black background with grey borders and ugly buttons - and yellow and cyan chat bubbles.. seriously samsung?
having said that, TW does have a very, very good launcher - very smooth and very flexible - i have no issues with that. The TW UX launcher is even better in that regard. it's the core apps that piss me off because they look ugly and dated.

Can xda developers port good Samsung Galaxy S apps to Nexus S? For example Camera, Keyboard, Voice Recorder, AllShare, Messaging? Is it possible to have binary compatibility and simply move .apk? I believe this is the same architecture, very similar hardware or am I wrong?
The hardware is almost the same, but the problem is in the 2.3 OS. Ports have already been made for the keyboard and the launcher. Look it up on the Samsung Galaxy S forums.
Edit: I've misread what you wrote. I think it's possible. Maybe it will work if you simply extract apk from app folder on sam gal s, and push it to nexus, or install.
Some of the apps you mentioned depend on the TouchWiz framework that we all hate. With no TW, the apps may not work on a Nexus S.

Umm speak for yourself. I have an Epic and Nexus S and my Epic with 2.1 and TW was smokin out of the box. Now that it has Froyo on it the phone purrs. TW is like modified AOSP where all my TW apps have slight enhancements. It never lags and is not a resource hog like Sense.

extra features usually means step forward not back......
Having more options is a step forward.
Slowing down your device considerably is not.
There's aren't steps forward... true nexus fans got This phone, to keep it simply Google, not tainted with touchwiz, sense or moto blur. we love untouched untainted Google software, the way the company wanted it to be, and for a reason. Its faster!! U want ur junky touchwiz, then go back to a real Samsung device. Not a Google phone.
No offence, but these comments are coming from Samsung fans, that think the nexus s is the next galaxy phone. Its not!! Welcome to the real world of androind, unmolested by other companies so called tweaks to the system..
Just the two cents from a real nexus, Google, android enthusiast!!

Adding extra, worthless BLOAT to the pure Android experience of the Nexus is a huge step back. Those terrible UI skins cripple the open-source nature of Android and do nothing but provide problems in exchange for pointless "eye candy."
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
why don't you just buy a galaxy s??
I hate to bump just an incredibly OLD thread, but this is not going a step back, this is a step forward, customization is Android, just because Android is pure doesn't mean it's going to be better in the sense that it offers functionality. Example? TouchWiz offers a notification widget for the music player, also a lockscreen music widget. Want another example? Sense has an email widget, a much deeper integration with Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter. Still not convinced? Look at Motoblur, while some see it as ugly, a lot of people find that the deep deep integration with social networking is a great experience. It's all about features, and that is something Android has lacked since the 2.3.3 update, with Facebook integration being blown out for a reason no one really understands.
Anyone have a way to get the Samsung Keypad on the Nexus S?
I really don't get people who are talking about bloatware on rooted phone. You can uninstall every single system app you want. Touchwiz is definitely an improvement over stock android: hardware accelerated browser (the browser on nexus S is unusable for me, everytime it loads an image or some flash content it lags like hell, I have to use opera mobile for a smooth browsing experience), it has video codecs, it has a great camera app, a great messaging app and a good keyboard. Removing the touchwiz launcher is, again, very easy. What? You're saying you can't use ADW or launcher pro on it or wtf?

With all of the free and paid launchers out their would you prefer the Samsung Epic come with or without Touchwiz framework.
Personally dont care for the launcher but I like the little things like the task manager which is light weight and the quick panel toggles and little things like that. They're not a deal breaker for me but they're nice to have. Also some of the apps tied around TW are really nice like the camara, video player and music app. Those actually might be the most important to me anyway. Just my 2 cents.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I like the fact when you have a AOSP Rom you can have more custom Roms and Kernals. AOSP rom can use the camera, music player and video player too. Plus you don't have to wait for Samsung to come out with the source code for updates. Since Samsung knows it own drivers they can make a pure google phone with full functionality. But hey if touchwiz is important to you then vote on it. Touch wiz has some benefits too.
I like the functionality tw adds(task manager, music controls in various places, codec support, etc), but I wish it was implemented better.

Doesn't the TW framework add cpu optimization and stuff? you mean the Touch Wiz launcher?
Realistically speaking I think they should load it up with TW, but give users an easy way to go ASOP if they choose. Personally the TouchWiz launcher is great for the average individual, its simple and clean ui.

I think they should have made the drivers independent of Touchwiz. Our developers have to rewrite all the drivers just so we can get an AOSP rom to work, I think this is non-sense. It also makes the samsung epic the last to get updates. On one hand we like the cpu optimization but one the other hand we complain when the when it takes 3 to 4 months later to get updates. We can have it both ways. If you like the cpu optimization then you should expect the updates to take longer you should also expect incompatibly as well.
only thing i like about tw is the camera.. which i can get over, i dislike anything that isnt pure google....i miss my OG droid..
I miss one thing about touchwiz, and that's dragging my finger across a text convo and automaticly calling them. The Nexus S is the finest phone I've ever owned, I will never buy another phone that isn't 100 percent Google.

I don't think I can live without the adjustable brightness bar at the top.
I'm looking forward to official gb release to have tw again. I actually find myself missing it.
I just want a "new and improved EPIC"
I'd prefer it without TW. I think it looks gawdy.
Lack of customization, and it not being a "sense-quality" launcher, I'll stick to Launcher Pro until I find something better. ADW, GoLauncher, arc launcher, even dell stage I've tried, launcher pro beats everything.
Another vote for launcher pro. Best launcher out there.

Are the widgets in the pulldown notification area part of TouchWiz? If so, I'd prefer touchwiz.

Guys think about it, it would be a new phone meaning it would come with TW4, and I don't know about you guys but it looks pretty sexy.
I'm using the TW4 launcher and icons and must say it's looking great.
And I'm sure the rest of TW4 on the SGS2 is amazing.
You've all seen the leaked images of the Within, right?
Oh the excitement.
I will never buy another phone with TouchWiz unless it already has official CM on it. Same goes for all other crappy UIs. Its either CM7+ or a Nexus from here on out.
i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

not true, i added exclamation marks! lol
After a tried & true CM guy (running it on my 3 tablets, 3 different phones), I'm not sure I can stand to lose some of the features that TW provides (unless of course they were runnable in AOSP):
- voice control of lock screen/camera
- air gestures
- all the S4 specific sensors
- and one lil thing I've come to like more than swiping between pages in the app draw: the pagination dots! I've come to really like those, especially since I've got like 8 pages of apps
I just wish I had the look of AOSP, configurability, control, etc.
One TW thing that irks me: apps drawer on the far right & not movable.
I use Nova launcher which lets you customize the look quite a bit. And all the TW goodies are still available.
I like touch wiz it ain't bad over all especially with some tweaking.

Great suggestion. I've got both Nova and Go launchers on my phone, and like what they do for me w/o messing with TW. I like Go a little better because it rotates the home screens with the device, something Nova does not.
I'm a fan of TW so far. I also came from the HTC Sense world, and while there are pluses and minuses to both, I'm overall happier with TW.
I really like the small things like the swiping texting or call when I contact lists, the direct call when you have a contact pulled up.
I like the number of texts, email or missed calls displayed on the app
So i have definitely grown to like tiuchwiz

For the record Nova lets you rotate your home screen as well.
I have never understood to intense hatred that still exists for TW. True at one point it was a smothering overlay that killed performance but now it is a smooth "MOD" that I like more than "Pure" android especially since Samsung's best goodies live on TW.
Let the flames begin!
This is the 11th Android phone I've owned, and for the first time ever I'm not in any hurry to flash an AOSP rom. TW really does offer a lot of features that I would miss if I went to AOSP. I just flashed clean rom and a mod to get rid of the at&t logo and phone volume slider and I can't be happier. I also got rid of the soft buttons and use GMD, I almost never touch the back buttons with the knock on and made nova launcher double tap to lock. Pretty freaking awesome.

Came from GNex with AOSP ROM and I think LGs ROM is okay. I was expecting worse, but it's not terrible. There is way too much bloat (Verizon), but I will most definitely be install a custom ROM as soon as AOSP ROMs hit the grid. I do like the knock on feature and some other stuff they baked in though.
I have a few apps out of the box that are draining my battery at idle which I will have to figure out.

It's not that bad at all. Certainly better than Touchwiz. I actually like this LG UI more than any I've used outside of some of the modded AOSP ROMS (CM, AOKP, PA etc.). It has a few quirks, but nothing that I would consider to be a deal breaker.
I ran tw I ran aokp, I ran cm plus a multitude of kangs of all three including miui.
I am 5 days in and not once got bored, glitches, battery drains. Its got all the customazions I need, except dpi and permissions. I am cured flashaholic. That says a lot about the software coming from an avid flasher
I have been a big fan of cm for some time now and love the stock android look. I may very well install a theme to get this look at some point but I see no real reason to flash or even root at this point.
The software is smooth and customizable. It is heavily skinned in a love it or hate it kind of way, but themes make it far less of an issue.
Hope this helps!

so no thesoftware is not bad
I like it, it's smooth unlike touchwiz and mostly everything can be changed. Refreshing.

Came from a nexus 4 and I love the software.
My only wish is that I want more multitasking stuff (like TW's mutiwindow just without the bloat )
yeah multitasking is android 8ssue they implemented window support on an app per app and not os wide basis, thats why not all aps are launchable that way
The LG skin/software is awesome. I really like it. Its fast, fluid, and has many features. example: theme keyboard, theme ui keys, nav ring shortcuts, pop up windows for text and phone calls, etc..
With the nexus 5 predicted to have a 2300mAh battery and a worse camera at £399 it's a cracking deal for the LG G2. I work at 3 and am tempted to take up the deal.

The skin is more that adequate for anything you want to do. this isnt 2010 where htc sense and samsungs stuff blew ****. everything is great. whether it is motorola or sony's or whoever, they are all fine....
I hate that stock android is taken to the point of god like. its good. just like sense. or touchwiz. stock isnt better than either of them. they will all do the samething. in fact, often these skins on top have more options and are a fresh breath of air from stock
No I love the software on the g2. I had 2 s4's and both lagged and didn't run as well as I wanted it too. Great processor but software bogged it down. I like this phone so far for its software and its beautiful screen. Samsung threw whatever they thought up into tw and it was a lot of junk I personally didn't use nor anyone that I know personally
