A nandroid is a full backup of your current ROM.
Trimis de pe Defy CM9

nandroid is a utility, accessible through Recovery Mode, that allows you to backup the device and restore to the exact condition at backup.
if you are using CM it's generally that's how to making a backup or "nandroid", and if you are using another it's not big different, you can search more for yours!
1-Boot into Recovery Mode
2-Select Backup/Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img)
3-Select Nand Backup (may vary depending on recovery.img)
4-Follow on screen directions to complete
5-Wait for it to complete.
"Congratulations, you now have a nandroid backup!"

really noob question on Clockwork backup

sorry for the really stupid question, if i make a nandroid back, what does that do exactly? does that hold all the data and apps and everything? so like if I switch roms, it makes it exactly the same as before?
or does it wipe the rom and everything?
nandroid backs up the complete phone. Apps, contacts, android OS... everything. If you restore a nandroid backup, it will put the phone in the state it was in when the backup was created. If you are rooted and you haven't made a nandroid backup yet.. DO IT!
And how exactly do you do a nandroid backup?

1. when you go into your recovery manually, and it takes to you to the clockwork recovery, its because you (the clockwork app) replaced the original recovery, with its own
2. In clockwork app, hitting the "back up rom" feature, will automatically boot into recovery, and automatically run the nandroid back up for you.
3. Nandroid makes an exact copy of your current running rom. Apps, settings, and data, even placement of all your apps and wall paper. Think of it as a ghost image for a pc, but for your phone.
Wish I could post the link for my source, but can't because I'm a new user

[Q] The difference between nandroid backup vs current ROM backup

Ok so this is probably a total n00b question but I would like help understanding. What is the difference between a nandroid backup and the current ROM backup from ROM manager with clockworkmod recovery?
Ummm.. there both the same?
Nandroid backup is when u go to cwm and "backup"
Rom manager just calls it "current rom backup" but all it does is take u to cwm and backup ur rom
There the same

Thanks, I was getting confused by that. I suspected that they were the same, but I was not sure. I appreciate it.

Its cool; backup is the standard term, but amon sorta 'coined' nandroid, because it was a combination of nand [the memory] + android, backup, so nandroid was the result, so nandroid typically refers to a backup using amon ra recovery. Though in the end, as said, nandroid=backup.

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery?

So, I have a regular U8800 with Oxygen and ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.6.
My question is: what does Nandroid backup? If I manage to null my IMEI, will a restore bring it back? And if I brick it in some way, but manage to get into Recovery, will it restore everything?
I want to install the Aurora ROM, but if I mess up something, I want to know if Recovery can keep me somewhat safe.
a nandroid backup is protecticting you from any soft brick. By that I mean any software faults. For example if you accidentally delete something from your system a restore will make your phone identical as before. If you flash aurora and you want to revert to your backup this will make your phone look identical as before. I don't think that it is protecting you from a null IMEI though. If you want to be sure and to backup your phone completely you can follow this guide:

Ok, I will do that as soon as I get home. Thanks!

What is a nandroid backup and how does it differ from titanium backup?

I am new to this rooting world....I rooted my nexus 4 a week back using Nexus root toolkit v1.8.
I then flashed cm11 onto my phone.
I have TWRP recovery on my phone.
I want a full backup of my apps+data+ROM. How's this possible?? Which of these backups allow this..... And how to do these backups.
Also can anyone explain what a kernel is??
Titanium backup can only backup part of your data. Simply because apps can't access everything.
If you want a full backup, you should make a nandroid backup. Which is simply the name for a backup you do through your recovery. (TWRP in your case)
And the explanation of a kernel is really easy to find. So you'll have to use Google for that (I can't really think of a good explanation atm)

Just use the backup toggle in twrp. And no, you can't backup direct to your pc. But afterwards you can copy the backup to your pc. It's good practice to have at least one recent backup there just in case something happens where you'll need it.

Some More Question Regarding Backups :-
Backing Up Using The ROM Manager (By Clockwork Mod) also performs the Nandroid Backup ???
Also when I Restore My Nandroid Backup (Of ROM1) while i am using some other ROM(ROM 2) .....flash the device into the ROM 1 settings and all the systems settings+apps.???

First, don't use rom manager. You don't need it
A nandroid is like a copy of the entire os and all your apps and user settings. If your running rom2 and you restore rom1 all your settings of rom 2 will be forgotten and the ones you had in rom 1 when you backed it up will be restored.

Although this is not really accurate, but this is as close as I can get to. Think of a phone like a car. The engine part which is essential to make your car runs is your kernel while the body, doors, sidemirrors and everything else are part of a rom. Kernel is in the deeper layer of the system.

Pixel 4 (nandroid)

So since there in no TWRP for the pixel 4 currently is there anyway too make a nandroid backup?
If I remember correctly this is where the entire partition(s) is/are backed up like as in a snapshot was taken of the way every little minute detail about it was arranged. Since TWRP does this backing up for us and it's not available how can we back up our phones in this type of detail? Titanium does a decent job but it's not an actual exact duplicate of the way things were at a certain point in time on the partition like a nandroid is. Basically, if someone flashes a ROM (one not requiring TWRP to flash, namely pixeldust, I believe it has a patched boot partition allowing unsigned files to be flashed w/ stock recovery) and something hangs it up for whatever reason there needs to be a nandroid backup to revert to if the flash goes to hell in a hand basket, right?
Is there a way to make an old skool nandroid like TWRP makes?
One could ADB pull partition copies to make backups of partitions but how this would turn out with the android 10 "dynamic partitions" is still beyond my understanding.
