For some reason my 3g keeps disconnecting. In settings the mobile network option is greyed out, stuck on "turning on". The only thing that fixes it is a reboot.

No one has any idea why this happens?
Is your phone stock?
it seems to just show that when the phone is idle, not updating, sending/receiving, etc. i have no way to prove this, just a theory.

I had that problem when I was running adrylalyne's Vanilla FrankenROM. It's the sole reason why I had to quit running it. It was a seriously annoying once-in-a-while thing at first but once I'd been running it for about 24 hours, it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME and got to the point where sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix it. I haven't had it on any other ROM, though.
I was running the leaked radio (2.05?) when I had that ROM. Now that I've got 2.15, I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

No, the connection completely goes away. It's not just "I can't see the 3G symbol"... The phone actually has NO data connection and it seems impossible to get it to come back without a reboot.
2.15 radio fixed that for me. Using first leak Rom still.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
in order to get rid of this, you'd need to find which file or which portion of that file controls the signal indicator on the phone, and replace it with an older version of that file, from before this "idle" indicator began.
maybe the google holds the answers you seek?

Not an indicator problem. The phone truly has no connection.

Good to know. I think I will try that FrankenROM again, then.
i'm unrooted and on stock OS, just got my incredible yesterday...so far i've noticed that it seems to just stay dormant, whenever i open an app that connects to the network, it automatically lights up the indicator and starts using the data, and it doesn't seem to prevent me from actually sending or receiving data, so i don't know how i would tell if it's actually no connection or just an "idle" indicator. how did you come to that conclusion?

What you see is normal. The 3G (or 1X) indicator only lights when the data connection is being used. The problem here is that there was no data connection. I would attempt to do anything that used the data connection and it would not connect. No email, no internet, no Nav, no nothing. The programs would all open, but could not download anything.
Agreed, that's sort of what I was implying, I was referring to the OP. so the connection issues are Rom based, not related with the gray indicators. Just because its gray doesn't mean you don't have connection. Clarifying for the next person who stumbles across this thread.

To the OP, this happened to me today using Sky Raider Sense 2.5.2. I also had to restart, so it's not only you that has the problem.

What he was talking about being greyed out is when you go into Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks, the place where you check to turn Mobile networks on and off is greyed out with the text of "Turning on..." below.
well now i feel like a giant ass, lol!

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I was in a tiny town in Texas that apparently had no 3g and I was unable to do anything that used the data connection. Reboot didn't work, neither did changing the Mobile Directory Number to all zeros when pressing ##program>NAM-General (as was suggested on a different forum which I cannot link to). What sucks is that it's highly unlikely I can duplicate this problem since there is probably good 3g coverage around the verizon store in the city where I live. I called verizon and the person said something about that area not having access to the data network, which I don't believe because when I was screwing with the settings under ##program I managed to get a text message. My wife's Samsung Vibrant (I know, different network) had no 3g but she was still able to access all apps that required the data network.
When my wife's Incredible was stock, this happened to her. It wouldn't connect to 3G. When going into settings and checking it out, "Mobile Network" was all grayed out. After LONG discussions with Verizon Tech Dept, 2 factory resets later, they found the problem to be on their end with the phone being "lost" on their system. They reset something (didn't tell me what) and bingo! her phone had 3G again.
I just had it happen to me. Reboot fixed it, but I'd like to know why its happening so I can tell my friends at VZW to look into it...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Still happening to me. I told the tech that a bunch of people in the forums were saying it was a problem on their end, something about my phone needing to be removed from and then added back to the data plan, and they told me that they'd look into it. Eventually the 3g came back on its own like it always has when I have this problem, and the next day I got a text from verizon saying the issue had been fixed (which I doubt consisted of anything more than someone having the system send me a text saying the issue had been fixed). I've had this problem when my phone was stock, when I updated to the 2.05 baseband, and now that I've rooted and installed skyraider. Not exactly the experience I anticipated when I left the iphone 3g...
noticed another thing, idk if related...my gmail will "quit" working...meaning, it shows i have new emails inside the app, but they haven't pulled to my phone yet. the refresh button in the app, and the sync now button under accounts don't work, i had to do a nand wipe and restore a file from a day ago. i think it's app related, because it always seemed to happen after i updated some apps in the market, but one of the times (this last time) i didn't update the apps, i deleted them and it still happened. all other data and network connections work fine, only gmail. prolly not related, but thought i'd throw it out there
For some odd reason, my rooted d2 is losing the 3G, requiring a reset. This usually happens when the phone returns from being locked. Not every time.
Is this a stock rooted D2 or are you running a custom ROM?

The only mods I made are rooting, clockwork recovery. I have not used any roms. I googles it, and found that many people (read mostly about droid x) have the same issue. They also do the same thing (power down, and reboot). *228 does not fix this, its a froyo issue.

3G dropping with WIFI enabled
Mine does this too, and is also stock 2.2 brand new and rooted, but I think it was doing it before rooting. Have you tried disabling the WIFI notfication? I think maybe it keeps dumping 3G when it detects WIFI available in the area. When I disable WIFI it seems to hold 3G OK.

I tried this today, and I will update if that helps. For others trying this, first you need to turn on the wifi, then UNCHECK (so the check mark is not green) the Network notification box, then turn off the wireless. Thanks.
If you get a WIFI connection with internet, your 3G icon will disappear. It's supposed to be like that.

Hi
I can tell that the phone is using wireless due to the speed. Its just a little annoying.
Anyone else have this issue?
Masters stock 2.3.3 deodexed (rooted) with Netarchy 1.2.7 cfs @ 1.2
the same thing it show before and after i root my NS
same here.
with 2.3.1 and now 2.3.3
Yeah it's happened to me. Just toggle WiFi off then toggle it back on.
Haven't had that problem. You should try flashing again. I just heard of that problem in 2.3.2

Its my understanding that this is as a result of an app which needs to use wireless data specifically from a mobile network so it momentarily turns the mobile data radio on and then turns it off when its done.
i have only google apps and the 3G was on and the wifi in the same time ....
I think this is the issue:

Nexus S, 2.3.3, gri40, Vodafone Romania!
Sometimes turning on airplane mode and then turning it off again starts the mobile data for me. Give that a shot Bikers.
Are you guys receiving an mms at the same time? On WiFi when receiving a pic message the phone is forced to use 3g data to connect to the carrier server over 3g only to receive the pic. This is the Only time I've ever seen WiFi and 3g at the same time.
This usually happens to me when my wifi is out of range

Up until yesterday I was running 2.3.2 with the XXKB3 radio. I updated to 2.3.3 and got the XXKB1 radio. As soon as I connected to wifi, I started to experience this problem with 3g and wifi showing at the same time. So, I decided to re-upgrade to.the XXKB3 radio and I no longer have the problem.
The instructions on how to upgrade your radio are in the development section. Its definitely worth a shot. Yesterday I was not only losing wifi, but my 3g was going out also and I had to reboot my phone to get my 3g working. That doesn't work for me.

how long do both icons display together? is it only for a few seconds, or do they stay on indefinitely? if only a few seconds, it could be a wifi bug where its disconnecting then reconnecting in the span of a few seconds, so in between the 3G kicks in only to turn back off when wifi reconnects.

It is sporadic. Sometimes it comes on every 30 seconds or so then turns off. Other times, it is on indefinitely..
I read some where that having "supl" in your APN settings under APN Type might be doing it. maybe check that?
Hey guys,
My Vibrant is losing cell signal on its own. It happens randomly like once every couple days. I tried switching to Airplane mode but then I can't switch back to normal mode. This happened on stock, Trigger and Biwinning ROMs.
I have tried reseating the sim card but it still happens. I have also tried in GSM only and GSM and WCDMA mode but that doesn't help either.
The only fix that works is take out the battery and put it back in again. Does this mean I have a bad phone or is there something that can be done?
Are u wiping between flashes??

Oh I get that too, but I don't think the thread is talking about just data dropping. I woke up this morning to a completely disconnected phone. Not receiving calls. Not receiving texts (not that I ever get any). Nothing. No SIM card found. This after the phone was working perfectly the night before. Nothing changed.
It's really strange. Might try flashing another modem...would that help the SIM card not being recognized?
Thanks guys, I just tried Odin format repartition>KB5 stock and still got the error.
Now it's either the bad sim, kb5 sucks or my phone has a problem. I'm getting a new sim tomorrow

Thanks but I don't think its network, I get the same problem in Chicago as well. Also my wife's vibrant shows full signal. We traded sim cards and I still see the issue so its NOT sim card either. Now its narrowed down to:
1) KB-5 modem
2) Phone itself
I am still checking and will update the post

I'll Answer your choice....its choice 1) KB5 Modem. This modem is terrible i been using it on 3 different roms and while on this modem my data would freeze/stop randomly really noticeable on downloads and browser. I would be on the browser searching a page and all of a sudden it would not load anymore it would stop. I recently switched back to KB1 and my issues are solved no more data stops/drops. KB5 is really good on GPS but the data is horrible with the freezes/stops. Hope i helped you choose better. Stay away from KB5 if you notice browser loading stopping.

Today I got the signal error on kb1. Sadly this seems to be a hardware issue with my phone. I also checked to see what my baseband version shows and it shows "unknown"
Then I checked my IMEI and I got "your imei is "" "
So yeah that sucks. The only way to get signal back is take out battery and put it back in.

I thought it was just me. It was horrible about 2 weeks ago. 2 different modems different solve the problem so I was convinced it was a network problem. I waited it out and they seemed to have fixed it. Instead if an x most of the day I have 1 or 2 bars of edge like before lol
Haven't noticed problems on KA6, but I haven't been using it heavily. (Switching between Vibrant and HD7)
Might be worth a try.
Edit: Also, have you tried Bionix? I know that the same phone never had any problems on 1.3.1. Think it has KB1 though, so it may not make a difference for you.

Thanks guys, I did try Bionix nextgen which I believe is KA6 and didn't see the problem but again its just been 12 hours so far. I bought a dead vibrant with broken screen and just replaced the sim assembly. Let's see if that fixes the problem...
You're not alone. I have the same problem and I've flashed every modem I available. Sometimes I lose cell signal but not often. The data signal is what's spotty for me.
Thanks Blown89.
So when I lose signal, I tried checking IMEI *#06# and I get "null/null" and yes my efs is fine. Once I take out the battery and turn on the phone, it starts to work fine. Tried all software resets...
Any ideas?
Hello all,
Quick question. Is anyone losing Google Sync / Data when on Wifi ?
Happens at home and work. Never had an issue with my GS3 or One X. On cell service it works fine.
update 11/24
Seems as though its a pretty widespread issue. Also , it is an issue with the connection it self, not just google sync.
I opened up a "google issue" , if you are having the same problems I recommend posting on the thread. It can be found here:

hey guys,
I actually put in a google issue that seems to be picking up some steam.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I have no clue what causes it at this point. It doesnt happen on all networks. Happens on my work network which is open / unsecured.
Also does it on my inlaws network which is wpa2 encrypted. However my home network which is also wpa2 encrypted is fine.
I recommend posting on the google issue to raise awareness
I added my experience, it seems to me like it's keeping wifi alive but not the Google connection. I have no issues on a Nexus 7 running 4.2 so it's not my router either but could be something specific to Nexus 4 hardware. I might try changing wifi sleep policy to never to see if at least this way HSPA will be connected when screen is off.

Anybody not having this issue? It's really annoying and for some reason even if I set wifi to stay on when plugged in or never it takes forever to disconnect so I still don't get alerts. Definitely appears to be an issue with 4.2 so i guess we just have to wait and hope it is fixed in next update.

It actually happens to me on both new Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Happens on home network (WPA2).
Any chance this could be a Google server issue? My Nexus 7 on 4.2 and GS3 running CM10 4.1.2 doesn't have issue either just my Nexus 4. Not sure what's causing it on my Nexus 4 but it's driving me crazy.

I'm pretty sure this is a general Wifi issue, and not limited to Google services. I've noticed that when the Wifi goes to sleep, I no longer receive incoming calls in GrooveIP or Sipdroid. I also don't receive email alerts until I turn on the screen, and the wifi re-activates.
EDIT: I ran a simple test. Loaded GrooveIP, called GV # from another phone, GrooveIP rang. Let the phone sit for 10 minutes to fall asleep. Called again. Didn't ring. I then loaded up Advanced Wifi Lock to prevent the phone from going asleep. The first call worked, and so did the one after 10 minutes. So, this definitely seems like an issue that impacts any service depends on a reliable Wifi link - not just Google's Sync services. I ran the same test with Sipdroid, and got identical results.

That's a bad example because GrooveIP uses GTalk on the backend so you're still using Google Services. What makes this more puzzling is I went to a Brooklyn Nets game last night and they have crazy fast open WiFi at the place while my phone was connected, it appears that all notifications worked even when the screen was off. I was too busy watching the game to pay much attention but I did get emails, etc. while the screen was off and I was on Wifi. The main difference between that WiFi and my home Wifi is the one at the arena had no security at all.
I've been playing around with my router and tweaking settings but nothing is working and I'm pretty sure this is a phone software issue. What I want to find is someone with 4.2 on a Nexus 4 who is NOT having an issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is an app or Google Service sync related issue.
My Nexus 7 running 4.2 does NOT have any issue on the same exact Wifi so I'm wondering if it's some app or setting on my phone that's causing this
For me it definitely seems to occur more on unsecured networks.
Not only is it google sync but the connection in general.
Anybody with this issue brave enough to try a factory reset? If it doesn't get solved soon I'll probably flash CWM recovery, do a nandroid and then do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. At least that way if it doesn't I can restore backup.

Weird! So you did a factory reset and still nothing? Did you still have the issue before you restored apps? I mean like completely stock with just what comes on the phone. If you still have the issue with that, then we know it's not app related.
I might also try downloading and reflashing the system image...maybe something got screwed up in the 4.2 update??
