anyone else fed up with Sprints lack of 4g?

love the epic, awesome phone. but being stuck in 2006 with 3G data and paying basically the same as other people are paying to the other carriers with 4g data is frustrating to say the least. Especially when I was told 4G would be in my area but it isn't anywhere within 5 miles of where I live and I don't live in the boonies. Further, even where I can get 4G, its completely unusable, just goes on for a little bit, then disconnects, then reconnects. Chat told me they were still building out the network which I seriously fail to believe.
So bottom line, has anyone had any luck with getting out of the ETF fee so they can go to a carrier that didn't lie about 4G?

That's pretty easy for you to say since you already have 4G.

From what I have read, no carrier has true 4G currently. But t be honest I am pretty pleased with the speeds I get with 3G.
But it would be nice to get the speed boost that sprint is calling 4g

I'm glad its working for you, why don't you try it down here in south florida. it apparently works okay for people in Miami too. that doesn't help the people that were all told they were getting it. And before you type inane stupid things, try to think before you type. I did my research, i was told 4G was coming, and specifically to my city, yet it isn't in my city or any of the neighboring cities, plus sprint is talking about switching to LTE so thats a pretty good indication that WIMAX certainly isn't getting built out anymore in areas where it is "Live". And according to sprint south florida is live from Miami Beach to West Palm Beach. Oh except for the 80% of the parts that aren't. LOL. Oh and you didn't buy the phone for 4G, thats good for you, I bet 80% or more of the people did buy it for 4G. No one is complaining abou the price, its a great price, if 4G actually worked. and the other companies like ATT Tmobile have speeds that are at least 7 times higher than 3G sprint. so I'd consider that 4G. Verizon will be there very soon and Metro, Metro of all carriers, the dog crap carrier has 4G and its half the price of what i'm paying for sprint to lie directly to me.

Such a poor argument... They are charging the extra cash now on any smartphone. Also, have you seen a single decent android phone on sprint besides the evo, shift, or epic? They don't exist for a reason, to funnel people into 4g phones.
to the op... Yeh I'm fairly sick of not having it, it's extremely close to me but it fades all the time. Basically, just like the epic itself it was a great idea, awesome technology, but poor execution leaving it lacking.

its not that I really need it that much, its the thought of forking over 150 bucks a month for 2 phones for almost the next 2 years that is frustrating, especially when 3G is out of date now, let alone by next year.

So you are saying people shouldn't try to future proof as much as possible? Not everyone can afford to buy a new phone every year or 2 years, etc. So if you are up for a new phone, why not get a 4G phone. That way, when 4G finally comes to a city that is on Sprints list, you won't have to upgrade your hardware.
Seems like Sprint isn't upgrading/expanding their 4G network at all and Sprint customers are stuck paying just as much as other people on other carriers for the same/slower speeds. Not cool
Fed up with the lack of 4G? Absolutely. And let's not forget Sprint shafting their "Premier" customers and getting rid of yearly upgrades if your plan isn't over 89.99 or if you've been with Sprint for 10 years. If Sprint keeps it up, they will continue to lose customers.

Look. The epic 4g has 4g capability. The phone is a multimedia powerhouse with or with out 4g. 4g is nice but not a necessity. Can some of you honestly say that you would tether your phone to the computer to play WOW? If the answer is yes...please seek counseling for your WOW and youtube addictions. Guys nothing is ever truely perfect.

Id be frustrated if I bought th phone and was paying for 4g and not getting it.
But, I live in nyc so I knew I wasgonna get 4g sooner or later so I upgraded and a week later 4g went live
You should've gone with another carrier. Like the other guy said, do research befoe signing your wireless life away for two years.
Right no I don't even have 4g service, or even 1xrtt. I'm in wifi only right now, but idc. Because I know when I get home, I'm not gonna have any service issues. I leave 4g on while I'm home in nyc.
I was seriously considering going to t-mo because my friend with his TP2 was getting 5mb/s dl speeds and stuff, but sprint came through at the right time so I stuck with them.

I spend 1/2 of my time in NYC (which has 4g) and 1/2 the time in Long Island which does not. Although it work well when the phone is actually connected, most of the time I cannot connect to it while inside a building (even in Manhattan coverage is pretty spotty) - so when I wifi tether 4G hardly ever works. In Long Island, most of the places that I am in have wifi so lack of 4G has not been a problem personally. But I understand being upset for paying the $10 a month without ANY 4G availability in the home market.

again, did the research, read the quoted press releases and the article from the newspaper down here that listed the cities 4G was coming to. so i would be happy to go with another carrier but can't fork over ETF, and buy another phone when I already forked out 500 for these.

i don't know about you, but I don't do anything major on the phone, I do like to browse the web though and occasionally download something, like maybe a new rom for the phone thats impossible to do at 3G speeds that half the time are 300K or less. want to send a picture? how good is that going to work on 300K. So its not like 4G is just for gamers or youtube fanatics. youtube isn't even installed on my phone.

I have used WiMax in Atlanta and Nashville, and its awesome.
The Epic is Epic even without 4G, but I do wish I had it here in Louisville.

My concern is they've quit releasing any sort of expansion plans. Last year when the EVO and Epic were fresh they went on and on about which markets would be getting it. Now, nothing. If I at least knew if it was eventually coming to my area I'd be happy. Sprint has until my contract is up or VZW/ATT get LTE going to get some 4G in my area or I'll finally be switching carriers after almost 10 years. That being said, I get pretty decent 3G speeds to tide me over in the meantime.

Actually t-mobile has a equivalent plan cost. My girlfriend has a G2 and it is faster than my 4g (san antonio) she was getting 8k down while I get 6 or 7. Not to mention they get a better signal here.
No need to be a jerk about it. You would be just a frustrated if a sprint rep told you that 4g is coming soon...but it hasn't.

No one lied. On the Sprint website you can look at the 4G coverage map. If that wasn't good enough, you shouldn't have jumped onboard.

Verizon and T-Mobile are aggressively building out their 4G networks. ATT has upgraded its 3G and unveils 4G this summer.
Sprint's 4G expansion has mostly halted as Clearwire teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. This 'news' was obviously not known when these phones were released with Wimax touted. The OP's criticism is valid.

really?? I could look at the coverage map before they put it on the site right? before it was live in south florida? The rep asking me for my zip code and telling me I would be getting it soon wasn't lying? or the one on chat that said they are still building it and I would get 4G soon wasn't lying right?

Should I stick with Sprint

I am going to be starting a new job soon that gives me a $50 a month credit towards my cell phone bill. I will also have to get off my dad's family plan. So If you were in my shoes would you:
A. Stick with Sprint, and wait for the next badass phone they release, like the Evo 2 or something similar.
B. Find new service provider. I heard Verizon has a very data speeds. I've also heard very good things about T-Mobile.
C. Hang tight with Sprint and jump ship at a later date when service provider releases something badass.
D. Get a iPhone.
I believe I might have to either pay the early termination fee or have to do the Verizon prl hack to get out of the contract with Sprint. I do not believe the area I live in will get 4G anytime soon, so I've given up on it and will be happy with good 3G speeds. Which is why I'm leaning towards Verizon. What do you guys think?

I think Verizon is getting rid of unlimited data. Something to think about

Wait until March 22nd, that's when the next big announcement is. $50 off the cheapest company with unlimited data is not bad (assuming you have good coverage in your area)

Sprint used to be my favorite carrier (fastest data speeds + OG SERO) but I will never recommend Sprint ever again UNTIL they fix their data issues. I'd wait a month or two to see if Sprint is just upgrading or modifying their towers but after that LEAVE.
T-Mo is pretty cheap, has HSPA+, and always gets a ton of great Android phones. HSPA+ coverage while pretty broad is still spotty, but if you can verify that you're area is good to go, I'd suggest that. The LG dual core phone is set to launch and more the next big 4.3" HTC is rumored to be released on T-Mo as well.
Verizon's coverage is king, their 3G data speeds are now much better than Sprints and they are launching LTE 4G. Phone-wise you can't go wrong with them. They have everything. Of course you pay more but it's worth it if you're willing to drop the cash.
AT&T is on the up. Their entire 3G network is now HSPA+ so you're almost guaranteed to get better 3G speeds than Verizon or Sprint (I get 3-5 Mbps). Plus they are launching LTE 4G in the summer. Like Verizon they got a ton phones, they used to suck Android wise but now that their iPhone exclusivity is over they have embraced the platform as seen by the HTC Inspire, and probably the best Android phone on the market, the Atrix. Price wise it's not bad, you can get a Atrix ($200) with 450 minutes and 2GB of data plus use GV for texting and you'll pay only $65/month (or $85 with unlimited texting and mobile to mobile). The 2GB cap sucks but if you don't view a lot of video on the go and got WiFi at home you'll probably never go over.
Personally I'd go with T-Mo with a Nexus S (or wait for something better spec'd) if I was in a good HSPA+ area.

OK so if i was you and you could afford the etf and can afford tmobile or verizon. Go for it. But for now im sticking with spritn

If you are going to leave sprint then your best choice is Verizon. Tmobile and ATT are despicable when it comes to coverage and call quality. I had tmobile for 7 years and had sooo many issues. I highly recommend you stay away from tmobile. I never had att but have heard numerous horror stories about drop calls.
I suggest you wait it out till the end of this month, if sprint doesn't announce anything worthy then just boat to verizon.

if you are gonna go with att or verizon, you might as well bend over and spread your butt cheeks cause thats what att and verizon do to their customer.

The true end of the G1 and MT3G????

Since at&t is buying out T-Mobile, just Google it I'm not posting links, is this the true end of our phones because at&t said all 3G phones will need to be upgraded to support their towers and speed they will provide. In addition what are everyone's thoughts on the matter?? It seems like we'll all min the USA have to buy new phones BC they probably wont do the upgrade for free xD

You don't have to change anything unless ATT drops 2G.

I don't think it will be the end of our phones the 3G upgrades may come over the air or we may have to go old school & actually have to get firmware upgrades in the shop. I don't really think T-Mobile is much slower than At&t, after all, T-Mobile pushed the GSM network in the US, which made everyone else play catch up, since GSM was already in the EU for several years prior. Anyway, as long as we have XDA & the great people giving us Froyo & Gingerbread for our G1/Dreams & MT3G(which we were never meant to have in the 1st place), we will never be too far behind...I hope.

Its not necessarily a software issue because At&t said that themselves that all 3G phones will eventually have to be replaced to handle the new network.. AKA moving everyone to 4G and more expensive plans lol..

I'll get the pyramid if it hits T-Mobile in may like reported by T-Mobile news. Just ride the train and see what happens. If u get robbed bail out. My 2¢ anyway

Agreed, 100%. If the ride is still good, stay on it. If get start getting bad, jump ship.

Read unofficial t-mo news. Front page. Great info and perspective there. U might be able to get a new phone now and run the contract out before it affects u. I'm getting the HTC pyramid and riding this out regardless

I wet into a AT&T store today and there data line for "unlimited" is $45 a month with out tethering it was around $65-$70 with tethering (guys at the store were as helpfull as a bricked phone and didnt tell me much), (i currently pay $40 with tethering) ontop of your standared plans... to get a plan like yours (also mine) would cost us around $150 or more, im just hopin that we will be able to keep our plans how we have them due to the "grandfathering" law, not sure if it is covered from a buy out though...

I got a feeling that the govt isn't going to allow it. There seems to be a lot of media attention lately as to how it will hurt consumers. Mergers like this are not necessarily a done deal.

It is when companies own the Supreme Court.

So I am about to get booted off of my parents plan (college kid) come may. Would it be a smart option to buy a tmobile plan right now hoping that their prices wont increase with the potential merger? I have heard their plans are cheaper..
I am using an unlocked g1 on at&t right now- and I havent had much problem with at&t- I think all cell phones companies are low grade scammers... I do not use any data, just wifi, and probably text 500/month, talk 500/month..

I talked to a few tmobile people and they all say that the plan you currently have will remain the same price IF the merge happens

stick wit tmobile. tmobile will still carry out their prices. the two companies merged. which is great cuz HTC and other phone companies wont have to make exclusive phones for Tmobile etc. it will be available to both companies. so we get benefit of the new phones.

If noticed on alot of 3g and 4g phones are already set up for at&t aswell as t-mobile so im really not seeing a issue with the buy out except maybe a new sim card.

Well actually I started with cingular back like 6 years ago before they were bought by at&t.. And i am still using the same cingular SIM card =) I love it, probably one of the few cingular sim cards left.. so perhaps tmobile peps will keep their tmobile sim cards when the merger is offic.

From what they're saying when the towers get swapped it will be lte service and the current 3g 4g phones won't be compatible. I guess we'll see. All speculation at this point

Welk consider this..
Att phones currentlt work in tmobile and tmobile works on att so with that said if att changes anything they will cause priblems on there own network and phones. I dont for see any problems as ive already said before look in youre APN's you can already choose att or tmobile as a carrier atleast on all my phones

Tmobile sim cards suck I will move to a att one myself. I never had a problem with them but tmobile ive gone through three in less then a year.

With the merger no one needs to upgrade phones. If ppl read tmo's news, at&t pretty much just wants tmo's 4g capable towers and servers. If the merger Goes threw at&t will pretty much be selling world phones (phones that's will support tmos 17 & 21 hundred 3/4g bands and att bands).. all in all they just want the real 4g capable towers tmo has ..
PS ... my 2cents... the merger ain't good for no one.. monopoly ain't good! (Damn bush for reallowing monopolyzation)

Well... since my favorite cell provider (T-Mobile) will be bought out by AT&T (junk), I will be switching to Sprint in July. I will be getting the HTC EVO 4G 3D.

ATT did not buy T-Mobile. They have agreed to buy them, the DOJ and the FCC still have to approve the transaction. Which will be atleast a year down the road. But hey i guess if you're going to jump on the Sprint band wagon you might as well want to make the most of it.
By the way good luck talking to their CS reps. They know as much English as my 16mth old daughter.

I just came from Sprint about 2 months ago. I left because data here had become so slow, i am talking 47 kbps slow. But they are flipping the switch all over Wisconsin on 4G, and I miss my EvO 4G so much, I have to go back (and get the EvO 3D).
Day its released, day I have a mt4g for sale..
Sprint reps are ok. Don't know why everyone has a issue...

Sprint? Sprint is not a GSM provider. Many (if not most) people use T-Mobile and AT&T specifically because these are GSM providers. If T-Mobile gets acquired, AT&T will remain the only option.
I can't imagine someone knowingly switching from GSM to CDMA.

personally just left sprint. always had dropped calls, bad signal, and in order for them to fix my phone i would be charged an extra 10 a month for data that i was already paying for. if anything do the jump to verizon, only one worth going to.

I live in Miami so any cell pgone provider would be ok. They all have good service here.
I used to have AT&T a few years back and also verizon. AT&T ripped me off with charges. Verizon was great but a bit pricey. I have not been in Sprint yet tho. My brother is with them and he is very happy.
Lets see what happens in July and I decide to switch.
The EVO 3D looks really nice amd the specs are awesome. I am already missing my MT4G. The best phone I've had so far.

I would switch from Tmobiles GSM to Verizons CDMA if they werent so expensive. They have WAY better coverage in my area. They also seem to have better coverage in the more "boonies" type areas near here.

Most people couldn't give a damn about GSM or CDMA. Hell, you try to explain to them why they can't use a CDMA phone on a GSM network and they look at you like you have two heads. That being said, there's no way in hell I'll allow myself to use AT&T after the bull**** I just went through as an employee and a customer. Verizon is out because of the changes they just implemented re: warranty swaps. For those who haven't heard, if you have a warranty issue with your phone, Verizon plans to charge you $150 to replace it, if you have the slightest of cosmetic blemishes on your device. Volume buttons down work but you have a worn spot on your battery cover from the phone being in your pocket? $150. Screw that.
So yes, Sprint's data is slower, but in my area T-Mobile has a ton of dropped calls, bad call quality, and when I go into a large building (My office, a target, Costco, etc) I get no signal whatsoever. I'm going to try to hold off for the decision on the merger, but I might jump ship when the EVO 3D comes out.
Edit: Also, $50 for unlimited data, text, any cell call, and 500 minutes is a LOT better than the $70 I'm paying for 1000 minutes on the EM+ plan. Not complaining about T-Mo's pricing, just saying it's an option.

I would do it.

If my options are Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint...Sprint it is. CDMA or not, unlimited data plans should be unlimited. AT&T already has tiers, and Verizon is expected to adopt a similar system this summer. Would be nice if we t-mobile customers were grandfathered in, but doubt that will happen under AT&T. Will have to wait and see.

I am well aware of the differences beween GSM and CDMA. I know how the work and specs of it. But since I am not planning to move from the US, not I travel outside of it, it doesnt matter.
Right now, AT&T has the most expensive plans and they have a cap on data.
Sprint is the only one with a better pricing and unlimited cell and data coverage ( though I know is a little slower than Verizon's).

I recently read an article stating that tmobile and sprint offer faster 3g for smarphones vs dumbphone data, so it seems like sprint and tmobile may be priortizing there customer needs.. plus I heard a rumor that google may purchase sprint someday.. how awesome would that be.. I like gsm cause its world wide but so is wifi and my phone has that so nbd.. unlimited and still cheaper then the comp. If I'm browsing on my phone ill be using wifi anyhow.. as far as 4g goes pretty sure sprint is switching to lte soon and a law just passed forcing verizon and att to allow lte data roaming to smaller competitors.

I don't understand why people don't realize that nothing has happened yet and probably won't still for some time, there's no urgency to switch. I want to wait and try to get a rockin' phone in a little while when the buyout gets closer to reality. I spoke with a T-Mobile representative about it the other day and he said that most likely T-Mobile would still go by the T-Mobile name but would operate under AT&T. The only real thing that would happen is we would switch to AT&T frequencies cause they'd buy all our towers. Seems like it could only lead to better coverage, don't you think? Sprint seems too hit-or-miss for me anyway...

AT&T can't ruin T-Mobile overnight
From what I've read AT&T won't be able to repurpose any of T-Mobile's existing network for at least two years after the sale is finalized. They have also committed to honoring the contracts of existing T-Mobile customers. If the sale goes through, it should have no meaningful on your service at least through the length of any contract with T-Mo. I'm on prepaid, though, so who knows what will happen to my service.
Also, please wait and upgrade to the HTC Sensation before you brashly decide to cancel your contract and switch carriers so that I can buy it from one of you (preferably for pennies on the dollar, buyers market).

The merger wont happen rightaway its gonna be at least 2-3 yrs before we see changes,whats so hard to understand that either way is a win win for us Tmo customers,if the merger passes we have access to all at&t cell towers & if it dnt pass we still gonna have access to all those at&t cell towers... We will get grandfathered in cause they not gonna cut the customers short & if that dnt happened we still good at&t will change their plans & pricing,with all these new customers goin in to at&t,they not gonna stay ****ty forever... Im sure as hell not goin to slow ass verizon nor sprint...

Yeah except our phones aren't compatible with AT&T 3g. We can already use their edge towers.

I personally believe you guys are jumping the gun. The deal hasn't gone through yet...hope it doesn't though.

Do you trust Sprint's LTE plans?

Like many other original Evo 4G owners, I'm now looking for the next phone as my contract is about to be over. And luckily enough, we have 2 new devices coming soon - HTC One X (or Evo One) to be revealed on 4th, and Galaxy SIII sometime soon.
Obviously the next phone will be LTE, but I don't know if Sprint can be trusted to give me coverage. Verizon already has LTE pretty much everywhere and its damn fast. Sprint is losing lots of money, who knows if they'll ever catch up. It's also not known if Sprint users will be able to roam on LTE.

im in the same situation and wondering the same thing. i guess we will have to just wait and see?

It is a very aggressive roll out plan. If it does not work the repercussions could be huge.
I know personally I am going to stick with Sprint. If it takes a little while to get LTE in my area I know I still have 3G with a good plan.

Nope, don't trust them at all. Will believe in their LTE coverage when it's available in my area, already got burned once with Wimax.

According to the release maps, my area isn't slated to get LTE til at least the end of 2013. And that's not even technically my area, just a few cities around here, so I might not even get it at all. I am REALLY considering moving to Verizon next month, even though it will cost me at least 60 bucks more a month. But they do have working 4g everywhere in my area, AND 3g speeds that aren't sprint's dial-up speeds.

Just a little info for you guys about lte. When you look at a verison lte coverage map what your really looking at is the data coverage zone,not actual lte coverage. They have been caught doing this several times. Verison will admit that the map you look at is not actual lte coverage but data. Plus who wants a $130 monthly bill and no real unlimited. If you've never had them do yourself a favor and stay away.

Being completely selfish here, but Atlanta has great Wimax coverage, so I'm fine if the LTE takes a long time to roll out. That said, I definitely don't believe Sprint (or any tech/mobile company) when they give dates for service/product improvements. Also, I will never go back to a provider with data caps. I use my phone for almost everything. I watch tons of stuff on Netflix, I wifi tether my laptop when I'm out and about (and my wife's Ipad when she needs a wifi connection), GPS Nav, Pandora/Last.fm music, skype video chat, etc. I would hit that 2GB-4GB cap in a matter of days.

Yea 4g coverage is amazing here in atlanta but I never use it even tho I'm full bars on 4g. It kills your battery to bad and I'm always on WiFi and 3g isn't that bad

The fact of the matter is; when sprint's 3G is back up and running as good as it used to, it's plenty fast enough for almost anything you will be doing on your phone, including streaming Netflix, downloads, etc. Network vision is supposed to be a major improvement so I would have to assumed that the upgraded 3G on it's own would be more than capable of satisfying most data needs. I say this because right before the HTC EVO was released I was consistantly getting between 2 - 3mb download speeds on Sprint's 3G with the much lower spec'd HTC Touch Pro, Blackberry curve, and even the Palm Pre. Once the EVO came out it was like somebody turned off the light switch and 3G went to total crap overnight and never come back since. Just my opinion. I'm going to wait it out and see how the Network Vision performs before I bail or go to a different carrier with much more expensive and capped data plans. i'd advise others to do the same.

I do. After the less than stellar WiMax move, and them not exactly being in the best position, I expect a strong push. Remains to be seen, but I'm looking for a solid next step.

The only thing I trust from Sprint is that my plan will remain 30 dollars cheaper than the other guys. I don't trust any sort of data speed at all from them, haha. If I were rich, I would be on Verizon.

I plan on giving them until May 7th (i can leave ETF free at that point)
If they don't have some decent phone offerings or significant LTE advancement, i'm going to AT&T with my wife. The speeds in Texas are insane and since i've gotten used to using WIFI while on sprint, a 5gb limit on mobile data with ATT should be no problem.

I don't trust them totally. With two different companies that went bust I hope they do something good.

personally i am sceptical, but i think that they should know that a botched LTE rollout would infuriate many customers. A lot of us got screwed with the whole Wimax deal. We got our nice new phones(Evo 4G) and had to pay an extra $10/month for "premium data", not 4G coverage, which never came to most areas. The kicker is if you call sprint and mention anything aboiut their 4G coverage or 3G speeds, they will tell you "go to another carrier". they know damn well they are the only ones offering unlimited and unthrottled data, and they sure do use that to their advantage.
But back to the topic at hand... I think if Sprint wants to stay competative, they MUST stay on track with their 4G rollout.

Since Baltimore is one of the scheduled first cities, I can't wait! But I will not be surprised if the unlimited plan goes up $10. Despite Verizon and AT&T having LTE first, they still have limitations on usage and data. We shall soon see.

I wanted to switch to Verizon as they have lte in Bakersfield but my mom pays the bill at the moment so I'm stuck going to att getting the galaxy note. I would switch screw sprint I've been a customer since 2004 and now seeing everyone else with their new phones and 3g that actually hits pass 1meg.... I'm switching

They never tell me to go to another carrier. And they know their 3g sucks as I called and gave them **** over that. I would rather go to Verizon pay a little extra and actually get to use the lte network than being stuck with the slowest network offering unlimited data, you can't even use the damn data it's so slow
