You can love it all you want, but unless you heavily MOD this phone up (Root + Lagfix and more often than not a Custom ROM), the out of box experience is similar to these.
All of these lag/free/blackscreen issues still exist on JI6 for the Vibrant. I may put a video on YouTube with a demonstration soon, cause it's a myth, apparently.

This is kind of ironic...
I was just going to post how my stock JI6 vibrant is running pretty well; I opened and closed a bunch of stuff in a short period of time, but then tried to open the gallery and bam, my phone froze. No response from the keys, then I went to lock the phone, but it never turned back on.
Just did a battery pull
I've had mine freeze up and require a battery pull just swiping to another home screen.
im running stock ji6, no problems ever, with gps, gallery, lags.
Both of the youtube vids are with the i9000.
Maybe the vibrant just works great in Oregon! =)
I think if it's going to "just work" anywhere it should be either Mountain View, CA or Cupertino, CA.

When mine behaves like that I unload some apps. Even though it has 16 gigs, it seems you really can't just add apps until it's full.
I also suspect there is some kind of multitasking pre-emption problem too. For example, when you install an app, the phone virtually freezes when it's actually writing the app to disk. Maybe it's just a disk format or sd driver problem.

Why do lag fixes exist, if not?

No. these phones have terrible I/O performance. Notice in thr video when she runs twicca it freezes while loading data (most likely from cache). It's due to the RFS filesystem Samsung uses.
The fact that those are i9k's doesn't change anything. All the stock Galaxy S phones have this issue, save for the Nexus.

This is a problem on JI6. Nothing short of a different firmware version will fix the pause when installing apps. Not a "lag fix" either.
I have no problems with my Vibrant. Trolls will Troll because that's what they do, but the 0.001% of owners here don't give a good idea of what regular owners really think. The ones that consistently complain about how horrible the phone is and continues to use it, even after claiming to have sold it or will be, should just be ignored. There is an ulterior motive here.
I have stock JL5, and it runs great. JI6 has a problem with the Gallery, well known and I posted a solution for it already. But JL5 is running so good there really isn't much reason to be running JI6 over it.

Geez, my phone sure has never behaved like that (thankfully!); and I'm "out of the box." I can see how it would drive you nuts, lead you to "lag-fixes," etc.! Just want to point out that the problem sure ain't universal, for whatever reason. (I don't have a ton of apps installed; I wonder if that makes a difference.)
Occasionally, there will be a slight pause when opening an app or something, but it doesn't ruin my day...

I keep getting nervous about rooting, because I see people who write stuff in these and phandroid's forums about peoples phones starting to act weird right after they do it. I'm also worried about how to do updates to newer versions of android, and how make sure I have my contacts backed up because my buddy did his EVO and told me he lost all hiscontacts and wasn't able to sync them with google. PLEASE POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION SOMEONE!

First time owning a smartphone and first time owning an Android phone, I rooted the phone on day one, nothing bad happened. All I gained are benefits, adblock, costume roms (froyo 2.2), root explorer, voodoo, etc
Yeah, I've had it for two weeks and love it! I can only imagine how much better it'll be when I do root it. Should I just follow the tutorial on here? And then what roms does everyone suggest?
Am I the only one who is holding off on GB?
I personally hate flashing. I try to do it as little as possible. I like having a smooth stable ROM, and as long as it's stable, I'm pretty happy.
Right now, I'm tempted to flash mainly because I'm having issues with my GPS getting a lock, but I know as soon as Liberty releases a GB ROM, I'll want to reflash.
It's just a pain to me to wipe, install the rom, redownload apps (I have horrid reception in my apt and WiFi has always seemed buggy), reset ringtones, notifications, app settings. It's just a pain in the behind, so I try to do it as little as possible.
I see all the Gingerbread hype, I'd just rather wait for Liberty or Apex GB.

I also have been waiting but this is because I have bricked my phone beyond repair once and gotten to the point where all I could do is sbf twice. And if you haven't done it, SBF'ing is a pain in the ass. So I like to make sure that things are going to work before I try it
You could always use titanium backup for your app settings, also you won't have to redownload your apps each time. I jumped right to gingerbread as soon as I could, and I'm loving it. I've never had a problem with flashing roms. Really not that big of a deal to me.
If you want to hold out, that's on you, but believe me, it's well worth the upgrade. MotoBlur on gingerbread is really quite bearable, and it's growing on me.

See now, I didn't know that Titanium backed up apps...I'll have to read up on it. I too haven't flashed because I hate redoing my setup. I like the idea of a couple of GB features though (like the sliding text editor ) so its been tempting.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Yeah, Titanium backs up apps, but more importantly (or just as importantly, I suppose), it backs up application data too, so then you have settings maintained across roms. It saves everything to your SD card so you'll always have it. Also, if you like to save text messages, search SMS Backup & Restore in the market. It's free and very useful.
In my opinion, using Titanium free becomes tedious, and it's well worth the money for the pro version.
I've been using the new Gingerbread rom, extremly stable and fast. I can't imagine the speed with out the bloat ware.

I am waiting. No real hurry to flash anything. I've tried Liberty, Apex, etc...I like the stock rom with root and Launcher Pro ..I obtain the best battery life using it and controlling the cpu/battery/voltage the way I want.
When GB OTA comes out I will update it. Not sure how my phone can get any faster...everything opens and moves instantly now..especially with Launcher Pro.
Bone stock with 2.2 I was hitting 1450 with Quadrant benchmark, 2.3 stock I am hitting 1750. Nice!
Messaging widget is cool. Some other nice stuff also.
IM waiting for more work to be done to it.
The only thing I backup is Angry Birds Scores... 3 stars on all levels and all golden eggs !
I don't really need to save settings otherwise, other than ringtones. I just hate reconfiguring it.
I guess I just don't have a whole lot of stuff to tinker with things like I used to. I might wait for the OTA as well just to make sure I don't have any issues like others did when they used the leaked SBF.

What, you don't think any developers are gonna play with it?
After reading of all the "issues" with GB (rooted and non) on various sites, I'm thinking I'll just wait for DS 4.3 or even DS GB! I'm currently using Rubix Focused but that's mainly because the email app in Rubix works with my Hotmail account and the dialer actually knows how to enter my VM password after it connects. I really like DS and miss it but I've grown spoiled not having to read my Hotmail messages twice. I'm toying with the idea of replacing the email.apk in DS with the one in Rubix but being fairly new with the Android stuff, I don't know what that entails and how bad I could mess things up (though I guess I could SBF and reinstall (and yes, I do have several backups)). All the stuff I'm reading makes me think that GB is not quite ready for prime time, but again that's my exceedingly humble opinion.
I have seen on numerous forums all the " how do I fix" questions. I will wait. I will flash when the dust settles. Liberty 1.5 is really smooth right now. Just my 2cents.
Tappin from the Tee Box
I am just glad that GB is out. I will wait for the over the air, and then for it to get rooted.
Untill then, rubix focused 2.0.1 kicks butt. I don't mind flashing, but I remember when froyo dropped and everyone was sbf'n and having problems etc.
patience, when there is a Rubix like Gingerbread rom, my X will be complete
Titatnium won't restore a bunch of stuff on GB.
Don't rely on it to do your restore. Almost every application had to be re-downloaded from the Marketplace.
Lost all my game settings.. 8-(
Also if you like NFS, it doesn't work.
Also OliveTree Bible reader doesn't either.
Home switcher is broken, if you like to run multiple Launchers.

Titanium won't restore some system data because the version increase. Otherwise, it restored all of the applications that I had backed up.
If you like to run multiple launchers, use Home Smack. Seems to still function well in GB.
This GB leak isn't quite ready for prime-time, but is very good. Noticeable performance increase, and I was already having a good time with Fission rom. I can't wait to see how fast it is when developers kill the blur bloat.
for those who are on the fence about installing this, here's my experience. i was on myn's warm 2.2 before.
I installed it last night.
Honestly, Myn's 2.2 was very good, which was why I wasn't in a rush to replace it, but my coworker showed me cm7 on his phone at work yesterday and I had to do it as soon as I got home.
The problem w/Myn's is that I actually ran low on memory at one point, I was down to about 65mb (on the phone), so I had to delete a bunch of apps. I tried moving the apps to my SD card but that caused them to no longer work, a bug w/myn's.
I think on a fresh Myn's install, your mem is about 250mb, but cm7, your mem free is 378mb.
Another inconvenient bug w/Sense widgets was that sometimes, you have to go to that desktop in order for the Sense widget to reload its data, like the contacts widget which show no contacts until you displayed the widget and you could see it loading the contacts data. I think that was a Sense thing, cuz that happened on all my ROMs.
Tho, I do miss my pretty Sense widgets. I'm gonna be finding replacements for them and doing a write up for all the other Evo owners on XDA.
The nice thing about cm7 is that it feels slightly snappier than Myn's. Maybe that's just a placebo? But at least I didn't lose any functionality, which is why this is my first cm rom. I can't give up 4G, it's like going back to dial up.
One thing I don't like is their hotspot app, it sucks compared to the Wifi Tether app on other ROMs. You can't see who's connected and there is no access control. And it doesn't show amount of data downloaded or uploaded. Even tho Sprint's plan is unlimited, I try not to abuse it and that feature helped me monitor myself.
I should've done a speed test comparison before and after.
Well, the speedtest.net download numbers I got on CM7 were: 5mbps on the phone, 2mbps on the laptop
sad.
Another thing I don't like is the camera app. How do you turn off the shutter sound? It has more settings but in the video, there are no settings to set the resolution or codec type, how do we know which one is the hardware supported h.264? The Sense camera has ****ty focus sometimes on close objects, like it will hunt for focus, which you can see the object go into focus and but when it locks on the object, its focus is off. I haven't tested this with cm7 yet.
Cosmetically, the difference between cm7 and myn's is minor, you just lose the pretty Sense widgets. Performance wise, it feels snappier, but that's subjective. The main reason why I upgraded was more stability, even tho myn's was very stable for me. But the side benefit is that I got about 125mb extra memory and I hope SD apps will work properly this time.
Also, I hope we won't have to deal the the inconvenience of widgets losing their data randomly and having to go to that desktop so the widget can reload its data.
I also miss the Sense clock app, hope someone can figure out how to port that, it's very user friendly to set alarms and such. cm7's works fine but sense was better. sort of the same reason why i went to cm7, myn's was fine, but cm7 is better.
anyway, so there's my .02 on cm7.
UPDATE:
I went back to Myn's 2.2, ran into some hiccups on restore, details and solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12897128&postcount=9

Welcome to the club! You'll get used to all the little differences quickly and wonder why you didn't switch earlier. For some cool widgets, check out the sticky called "commonly used widgets"under the android general section. You'll most likely get beautiful widgets or fancy widgets if you like the sense based ones. I agree, cyanogenmod seems snappier, simply because it is. Theres less crap running in the background like sense so things load faster and respond better. You might consider also getting adw ex or launcher pro, both will make it even more smooth. AFTER you do, you can uninstall the regular version of adw with titanium backup.
Glad you like it so far!

My phone ran out of memory for the first time last night using cm7, using pic say pro I got a pop up telling me it could not complete the task due to low memory. It was also around 65 mb. I used my system panel to clear the memory andnit was fine after that. Maybe its just my phone, but it just seems to perform better using a sense ROM.
The main reason I like cm7 is the great battery life.
Glad you're enjoying it. I used to go back and forth the Sense, but I haven't been off AOSP for a while. Once you get used to it, it's much better.
To turn off the camera click, you need to delete the sound file with Root Explorer. It's under System>Media>Audio>UI>camera_click.ogg.
The sense roms are definitely more stable and prettier. But I just feel like I'm wading in a sea of molasses.
When I go from Sense to CM I feel like I just took a 20 pound dump. Ahhhhhhhhh.... nice.

Actually, PicSay pro was complaining about low RAM memory, not regular storage memory--I'm assuming you were trying to export a high def picture with lots of effects. It uses up tons and tons of ram and the same would happen on sense too.
I had the same perception that somehow Sense was better and more stable. It took me a full month to realize that both CM7 and Sense are stable.
Also CM7 is way better on touch responsiveness and scrolling because Gingerbread has dramatically improved core video drivers.
As long as you like your personal phone experience then I'm happy for you. I personally don't care for CM, at least not for the Evo. I used to use it on my Windows 6.1 touch pro and had fun. But it just doesn't have enough stability and usefullness for me on the Evo.
The only AOSP rom I was able to use for extended periods of time Deck's. It was a lot more stable, and usable then CM. Only problem is it doesn't have the rabid raving fan base behind it, it's better to be first, not necessarily the best, but that was just my experience with it. I've put CM on my phone probably 7 times now, and it never lasts, I like my equipment to work and work well, when I want it to, every time. AOSP on our phone does not provide that for me.
The camera sucks, actually takes worse pictures, viewing pictures sucks too. Even using 3rd party galleries, pictures are never as clear as on a sense rom. Here is a post I made about it last Sept. and sadly nothing has changed about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8141530#post8141530
You'll find likes and dislikes, if you prefer it then good for you. But makes sure you test everything out first. I personally would recommend Dark Cocoa II by 1975Jamie. I love this one, I currently have a crapload of apps installed and am at 295mb free on my internal storage.
I've tried warm 2.2, it was really nice at first, but that rom fell apart very quickly, I think i was off it within a week. Dark cocoa rls II has kept me for a very long time.

You're right, I'm back! The Hotspot app in CM7 was providing very unstable internet routing and connection. I tried installing the WiFi Tether app but I think ppl have trouble getting that to work on CM-7. I posted the issue here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...ions-of-wifi-tether-app-for-evo-21-wont-work/
BTW, this is the first time I had to do a Nandroid restore and I found out that:
It wouldn't restore from the phone, I had to use ADB shell on the laptop
Nandroid didn't make a nandroid.md5 file, so I had to make one myself
It was scary running into these issue on my first restore!
Anyway, I got restore to work, do this:
adb shell
cd sdcard
cd nandroid
cd [your phones special serial ID folder]
cd [the restore folder you want to restore]
from here create the MD5 file from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785858
enter in the restore command shown from the phone
it will ask you to confirm the directory then hit ENTER
Just FYI!

Is that a Sense ROM? I like Sense, but I'm hoping that in Sense 2.x+ and 3.0, they fixed the problem of the widgets just randomly losing its data and having to reload it, quite annoying.
Yea that's what I ment I ran out of RAM on cm7, I didn't think it was possible since I don't have a lot running in the first place. I was adding effects to a pic I took with the front cam. So it wasn't that big of a file.

Just the plain adw launcher, EX is the paid version with extra features.
Guys, just use VaelPak... it is basically a Sense CM. I'm loving Go Launcher with it. By far the best launcher I've tried between LP, ADW, Sense, and Go.
PS - All ROMs feel snappy when it's fresh... wait a couple of weeks to really assess. CM started dragging ass then.
For launchers, I recommend Go Launcher Ex. Its basically Launcher Pro without the extra widgets, and its free. Actually all the Go team apps like Go SMS Pro are rapidly becoming my favorite.
There is a final already?
I have destroyer v2 is that CM final or a diff build? hello?
The final build is CM7. No other names, not a nightly.
HOWEVER...
GPS has split personalities
4G is is a bit slow and slightly psychotic
Going to stock than back to CM7 gets the GPS to work for about the time it takes to locate you, doesn't work for navigation.
Screen lock has an uncanny ability to make the screen go blank, causing you to go batty pressing the sleep button numerous times until the screen decides to turn on.
Yes its snappy, and more efficient. But its not what I'd call stable.
I love sense sometimes but batt life is mediocre, and as well sense is a ram hog.
Im switching back to dark cocoa 2.

I 100% agree "just use vaelpak". I came from Myns to Vaelpak about a month ago and couldnt be happier. It was starting to mess up a little bit, the kernel i was using didnt agree. So I figure I would try CM7, seeing how everyone loves it and brags about it. Well.... It's just not for me, to jumpy for my phone and I like when everything works/stable

Yes! But I checked my thread on CM forums about the Wifi tether issue, and it looks like others have the same issue. If you never use Wifi tether then try it out, cm7 is awesome.
As you know, the fact that bootloaders are unlocked leaves an open door for third party firmwares (custom ROMs) to be applied to the phone.
Usually custom ROMs expand the functionalities of the phone and correct some of the software shortcomings. Even though the phone is only recently in the market, there may be some feature wishes and some complaints already.
In short, what features shoud a custom ROM add and what shortcomings should it correct?
I will start:
With the not-so-last gen processor the Play has, it is probably necessary to be able to overclock it.
I would like a minimal ROM (aka without bloatware) as it seems that the booting time of stock ROMs is incredibly high and it is caused by bloatware.
I don't have the phone yet (it's on its way ^^) but I have read things about the brightness setting being too dim and not changeable.

I may be working on an overclock kernel this weekend, it all depends on family stuff plus footy.

Doesn't sound right. I usually have over 200 free when the phones idle and no where near full when using FPSE etc.
Disable auto brightness and can set it manual (and increase more brightness).

As mentioned, a bloat free rom. Pure Android port maybe?
There should be another loader than play, something thats able to load psx, snes, mame (single games) and every other games u installed by opening the pad. With the possibility to add/remove stuff after u install it.
Overclock is mentioned. (Only 1500 in quadrant original??) FPS is okay though.
(I hope wolves - sunderland is canceled, so we have something to look forward too.)

I think he's refering to Internal Storage rather than RAM.
Since we suffer from very low internal storage, it would be great if a new ROM would provide something similar to the app2sd application (forces apps to install all data to SD). Might be a big ask though?

Sure you can move most app data to the SD from settings AFAIK. Bit of a pain though so installing to SD automatically would be nice.

Yuck, I got that wrong I thought app2sd allowed the footprint part of the installation to be mostly moved to SD. Kinda hoped the 30Mb of Asphalt etc cud be reduced to <1Mb or sumthin. Daft now that I think of it.
I agree then, no point in app2sd cuz I manually move the data when I install stuff anyway.
Admin, can someone wipe my replies to this cuz it's only taking up space on what shud be a valuable thread!!
1, faster boot-up time.
2, ability to pick the games you want to have in the games launcher (or a new launcher).
3, widgets from desire.
4, R/L buttons as camera buttons when active.
5, R/L buttons as volume when camera not active, i find the original volume buttons a pain, even more when you have a case/shell on
6, brighter screen for them sunny days.

Nope im talking about ram. If you guys have issues with storage, fire up adb, connect your device. And input.
adb shell
$ pm setinstalllocation2
$ exit
This will force all apps to be allowed to install to the sd card, and games like ashpalt take less than a mb

Nice tip cheers lad. Still not seeing how you are having problems with ram usage though, I haven't encountered any. If anything I am constantly surprised at the amount I have free when gaming etc.

well with my fone rooted and afew things gone such as timescape
i get 1800+ in quadrant
but as far as custom roms i would love the miui rom
i had it on my x10 and thought it was exellent
i like the look and how fast and vibrant it was
so come on tripNraver or someone else port it over plz
App2EXT
As I hate the original android app2sd... as all widgets get broken by this method...
From what I've heard, since Verizon has fallen asleep.
1. Bare bone rom. Like to where you have to install gapps and other stuff. Only to have the apps android comes with.
2. R1 as take picture and L1 as focus.
3. Ability to add any shortcut to the "game app," forgot what it was called. Whether it be a app or game.
4. No overclock applied. Let the user add a overclocking app if they want.
5. Power control widget in the status bar.
6. And supper user of coarse

i want a stock android tbh, STOCK; and of-course, an overclocking module
id love an option to disable data traffic automatically when the phones screen is turned off, if this could be built into a custom stock gingerbread rom. the reason that would be awsome is cause it would double your batterylife and save using a widget and having to manually turn it on and off wasting time.
also R1 for taking picture and L1 for focus
having a battery percentage in the status bar would be amazing ( i know theres apps to do this but again if it was built in the rom as stock)
I would love a better keyboard, i came from an iphone and androids keyboard is just not accurate enough.
thanks in advance whoever takes the time to make this possible i understand it takes alot of time and effort to help others but rest assured it also makes many people happy . I wish sony would have released this phone in a more polished state it feels half finished and fragmented with all the apps and games markets

I can agree with that
Well guys, I don't honestly know what to think about the new OTA. I tried it but wasn't overly impressed with it. However the speed and battery life is kinda nice. I still feel like it is lacking some features that a GB update should have had and I also feel VZW and HTC rushed this one. What do yall think?
Good Base For Future Mods
I suspect that the OTA will be a good base for future mods. I like it, but some of the features that I take for granted after using CM7 are missing.
I ran the leak for a while, I really liked it because of speed, but I can't believe they took mobile network, airplane and silent mode out of the power menu.

Thats a good point. I love CM myself, been a long time fan.
I've been using the rooted leak version for about 24 hours now, moving from an EVO based mod. The new one is definitely zippier, even on scrolling, etc. I'll keep using it, but looking forward to new custom builds once the source is out and modders get their hands on this kernel.
Well, this wasn't supposed to be as big a thing compared to when FroYo was released. Expectations of that magnitude for this release were not realistic.
Differences aren't visual per se, rather just a few functional ones.
All in all, gingerbread, meh.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
For me, it's a few things.
Feels unfinished. What I mean is some things are not what i expected. For example, i use google talk alot and with Froyo, the icon in the bar was a Sense based one. Now it's just Google Talk. This is fine, but i have to ask - was this on purpose? or a slip up?
next, I don't like NOT being able to disable ALL animations. In froyo, i could turn off the clock animations, weather ones and even the OS ones. I like that. In this one, I can't... only OS.
I have a had a few FC's with google voice setup (cleared up once configured) and Scrabble rarely notifies me of a move, but those could be app related.
battery life remains to be seen since I need to charge my phone all the way up while powered off.
it's definitely quick, but it took like 5 minutes before I started missing Synergy. Looking forward to seeing what can be done with the update.
It's a nice temporary fix for my ocd rom flashing but i think devs and most others are waiting for the final ota with some bug fixes. Isn't this lacking the new radio as well? Otherwise I am really happy it looks like they fixed the low space /data/data notification.
If we are lucky the devs will pump out some amazing roms for us that are stable and fast. Just gimme pulldown widgets, 5-row apps, recent apps in notification, and remapped rosie buttons and i'm set!

The ones posted in this forum are missing the radio but that is because the source that gave it to our devs asked that they not include the radio when they compiled and uploaded the rom. For what reason? Who knows....
I think the update should've added sense 2.1..
I miss power toggle pull downs and right rosie, but other than that, everything for me just works and works fast. If someone can add some 2.1 features, that would be nice. Been on this since it came out, zero issues, zero lag. I use my phone for business with some music, dont install more than zbout 4 apps. Everything flies. Look at it this way, if no other roms could ever have been ported over, is this a good update from when you first got your dinc? I say hell yes. The ports are great, im not baggin cause ive flashed every rom here, but this was made for our phone. Could it have had 2.1, sure, would it have worked as good, i doubt it. All ports have some issues, all be it very minor, but they also develop lag and more issues the longer you use them. Im willin to wait a week and see what happens, im sure we will see a different ota eventally, fat lady aint singin yet.
curious about battery life
I've been using miui and have been getting good battery life. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the new ginger
All I could think about was how ridiculously fast Sense 1.0 would be on any Gingerbread ROM.
If i were a dev I would definitely be cooking up a clean, streamlined, unbelievably fast Sense 1.0 ROM for users who don't need what 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0 have to offer.
That being said, as far as the OTA goes... We'll see?
I like the speed of this OTA, too. It's very snappy. But I'm having a problem with voice input recognizing speech. Is this a problem for anyone else?
I was using bluetooth and I said open calender and it would randomly pick a number to call from my contacts.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
It's a problem with GB in general. Try using voice search while driving and you can scream in the mic until you're blue in the face. It won't recognize anything you say.
Is that just for GB Sense based roms? I have never had a problem with voice input on CM7.

It might be a combo of things. All I know is it worked perfectly for me on Froyo.

It was fun to try it out and it's fast, but I went back to Community RC5. I won't be looking back, im sure OVO will rip whatever is good and stick it in community.
