[Q] HTC HD2 TMOUS NYC - ROM with working GPS ? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi,
I have tried several "fixes" for GPS not being able to find satellites problem. Such as
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233359 and ANgelDeath's faster Fix.
Is there an out of the box Android nand rom NYC/USA users have used to get their GPS working? If so can you please share your experience and recommend me a solution?
I reside in NYC and am having frustrations getting the GPS to show/find satellites in GPS status.

anybody? bump

bump bump bump

morning bump. no nyc users?

hey i have a friend in philly??? not NYC i know but close ... kinda? i know he makes trips to the city often for work and what have you and has never complained about GPS fixes. he uses the same rom as i, Hyperdroid, and hasn't reported ANY problems. (i was the one who helped him get everything all flashed and ready to go, so my thinking is i would be the first upset/panicked call should it not go smooth)
Hyperdroid is a NON-sense rom. it is (in my opinion, for the HD2) just about the best rom as far as NO FCs, lightning performance, EVERYTHING works.

alright thanks, i am going to try to flash back winmo and test if the gps is working there...
Is it a common problem for the gps hardware to fail on these phones? New to the phone...

TomTom 7 now compatible with Touch HD

A UK company are now selling TomTom 7 software that is compatible with Touch HD.
http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/539/tomtom-navigator-7-software---map-of-western-europe
I wonder if this will solve the GPS dropout problems that I'm experiencing with my current version 7.915. The problem is that you have to buy a new map to get the latest software, I've already paid for the Europe map, so I looks like I'll have to buy the UK map and not use it to get the latest "compatible" software and knowing my luck it won't fix the dropouts anyway .
GPS Dropout
im using TomTom 7 and Igo8 on my HD and i dont have any GPS dropout, granted when it first aquires the lock it does flash locked/unlocked for about 10 - 15 seconds then thats it, its locked and stays locked, works best on igo8 though locks straight away and stays locked, and if im honest i think i prefer IGO8 even though i have graduated with tomtom 5,6, and now 7, but still nice to have both
Unfortunately, I'm having real trouble.

Using TomTom 7, it works fine for a time and then the GPS stops working. Exiting and restarting TomTom always brings it back. Time scale is random, it can work for hours before going tits up.
I've tried three different Roms, five different radios, two different versions of TomTom 7, AGPS is disabled, GPS mode set to 1.
It's starting to look like a hardware problem.

I've just disabled Quick GPS and deleted xtra.bin from the windows directory in case it's a corrupt ephemeris problem, I don't hold out too much hope though.

who did say that it is a newer version than 7.915?
On my HD TomTom 7.915 is running very well.

I wish mine was and it's not for want of trying.
My last hope is that it's something to do with me being, currently, in the South of France. The problem got progressively worse as I drove south from UK. Perhaps it's something to do with the phone downloading a UK ephemeris which is no good in Southern Europe. Although it must be said that I did not have this problem with TomTom 6 on my previous two phones, Artemis and TyTnII.
I've had problems with tomtom on cooked roms, but having gone back to the last UK stock rom and tomtom 7.915 i have had no problems at all.

Can you let me know which rom you are currently using please and I'll give it a go.
The quick gps experiment didn't help, I just had three dropouts in forty minutes .

Try to hardreset and reinstall tomtom. it´s running in generell and even with cooked roms (at least the well known wm6.1 roms i have tested)

Thanks, but I've tried hard resets and reinstallation of tomtom to no avail.
Roms I've tried are:
1.14.405.3
1.56.405.1
1.57.831.1
Dutty's 3.2XT
Dutty's 3.3XT
All exhibit the same problem with tomtom, ie random GPS dropouts. I think the only thing I can do is to buy the official release version that states compatibility, then I can get some tech support from tomtom and HTC.

The last standard UK rom from HTC is a 1.56 variant (you can download it from the HTC website with your HD serial number).
I had problems with tomtom when running versions 3 and 3.3 of dutty's roms, when either the program wouldn't start (it would just crash back to the today screen) or no satellites would be seen or the program would just freeze when navigating (used to happen a lot on 90 degree bends for some reason.
I suspect the cooked rom issues may be linked to memory usage, but i'm not sure.
I use tomtom a great deal (probably 20+ hours a week), so decided to go back to the stock rom and i've not had 1 single problem in the 2 weeks since.
You've probably covered this elsewhere in your thread, but it may be worth installing HDTweak and making sure that you've got AGPS switched off.
Good luck

anyone know what the version is ?? 7.x or 8 ?? that's offically supported
As there isn't a navigator 8 yet, I would be absolutely shocked if it was anything but 7.x

Thanks.
I'm using the same rom as you at the moment with no luck. Tried all permutations of agps/no agps using hdtweak and gps mode in registry, also tried another SD card. This is so annoying as I'm on a driving holiday in Europe. I've just downloaded Davideuck's WM6.5 rom and will try that, clutching at straws here.
The freezing you had with Dutty's roms sounds like the same problem I'm getting. It's completely random, can work fine for hours and can freeze twice in five minutes, mine seems worse in slow or stationary traffic, but it can happen anywhere and usually does it at the most inconvenient moment. If I exit and restart tomtom, it comes straight back. I suspect it's something to do with timing somewhere.
Which version of the maps are you using?
Where have you got tomtom installed (i've got it installed on the device)?
Which radio are you using? (i've found 1.13 to be the most reliable)

best of luck to you
Do you do a 'clear storage' when you flash? just in case there is a bad settings file somewhere on your storage card?
I had a torrid time getting tomtom to work 100% reliably on a cooked rom, but have never had any problems on a stock rom, so this has effectively cured my 'flashing fever' and i'm happy to stick with what i've got now, especially as i had tomtom lockups all the time on a way to a wedding in central manchester a few weeks back that caused no end of grief in the car
Arrrrrgggghhhhhh......
It did it again .
The only difference this time was that the navigator screen went grey and showed no satellites rather than pretend that nothing had happened and carry on showing motion albeit slowly leaving the road. It looks like it's the gps module switching itself off from time to time and requiring a restart. I seem to remember seeing something about a registry controlled timer, I'll look into that now.
What you describe above is exactly what happened to me when i was running one of dutty's roms. I would lose signal and it would wander off road before going round in a big circle and ending up at the point where it lost signal. I would also find that for some time afterwards i was unable to see any satellites in any GPS application.
I tried flagging it up on the forums here thinking it was an issue in the cooked rom, but I didn't get anywhere. Thankfully a stock HTC rom got everything as it should be and i navigated without any issue at all around the south east of england for 3 days (approx 18 hours of GPS time) last week and also made a couple of trips this weekend without issue.

So is this a legit TomTom Navigator 7 package for HTC Touch HD?
If so, great.
But I also need North America maps. Where would I be able to purchase those from, or would I need to buy them in the US? Is it then just as simple as loading the new maps onto a card?

[Q] Spica GPS problems

Hi all,
I am trying to find out how widespread the GPS locking problems are with this model. I am talking about non-assisted GPS, which can be tested using the "GPS Test" application on the market.
So, how is the GPS on your phone performing using GPS Test? Please give some detailed information like lock time, number of sattelites, urban/countryside location, and if possible firmware version of your phone.
---
My Spica cannot get a lock at all, will see up to 11 satellites but most of them with signal strength bars at zero. Firmware versions tested (all same result)
1.5 (XEJB2)
2.1 (XXJD1, XXJD4, XXJF2, XXJC3)
Same pb with my wife's spica. Samdroid version with FE7.
Can't lock withour assistance. What a pitty.
Go to your Settings -> Date & Time -> Uncheck Automatic and see if it helps
Or you can try this (need root)
http://forum.samdroid.net/f38/gps-speedup-1262/
http://forum.samdroid.net/f10/fasterfix-1747/ <-- same but easier
i can get a fix under 2 minutes if I stay still...moving, it can take an eternity

i just don't bother with that any more...I might do it again after a month without wiping any data
rooting is like breathing to me ... as it would be to most of the people here
Anyone found a solution yet?
My spica wont connect via gps either. It just keeps blinking and nothing happens...not even after 30min.
I've tried GPStest and it reports that 12 satellites are in view but non in use, and there is no bars everything is at 0...not picking any signal at all :S
I tried my friend's one too and he gets a signal imediatley and a lock after about 10-30seconds.
Any solution to this? Is it a software problem or hardware problem?

I installed the alpha CyanogenMod 2.2 and GPS is working like a charm!
Problem was with the wrong libraries being used in many of the custom roms found at SamdroidMod. Devs found out about this issue and fixed it in this 2.2 release.
I'm running original firmwire which i got on the phone. (XXJE4)
I'm not willing to install alpha cyanogen of froyo yet...Is there really no other solution? I've had a chance to compare my spica to another one with original firmwire (JE4 too) ant that other spica worked while my gps had no lock. Also i had the chance to try one with samdroid on and it worked too.
Mine works from time to time. at the moment it works, earlier today it wouldn't get a lock no matter how long i waited.
First thing-delete /data/xtra.bin- this is data for agps which seems to cause gps locking problem. You can do it with RootExplorer/SUFBS or any file manager with root rights. Or use GPS Status and Reset agps data from setting. You can also try to swap libsec-ril.so, JF2 version works best for me. If you want I can provide update packages for libsec-ril.so
i have installed cyanogenmod 7.1 on mine, and can get a lock under 1min30s outside or under 3min in the bus near the window.
I have a rooted spica with android version: 2.2.2, baseband version: i570EXXJC1, kernel version:2.6.29 and Mod version:SamdroidMod-2.2.2-a9.
When I go to google maps app and click set location I always get an error saying: location temporary unavailable ! I checked the option on Settings->Location and security->Use wireless networks and use GPS satellites. And my phone is connected to the internet.
I just bought the phone last week, and its really embarrassing not getting this to work.

thanks for the useful info, you saved my life by this post.
i thought my gps is wrong in my spica then it was just a bug in the cooked rom. cyanogen mod is cool and gps is working now perfectly.
thanks again!
With spicagenmod + hp/yonip kernel gps work very well.

won't find gps signal

hi,
i don't now if this is the right forum to ask for this question
i have installed froyo 2.2 on my hd2, i have one problem, and that is with the Gps i can't get any signal it just seeking and seeking, when i go in to google maps or navigation, could anybody help me with that problem
Did you make sure that GPS is enabled? Do you have a clear view of the sky? What build of froyo specifically are you running? What radio?
I'm running Bangsters 1.2a and it takes forever to find a GPS signal, but especially with Google apps. Waze seems to fair a bit better, but no where as fast as back in WinMo.

yes i turn gps on and i can see in top op the screen that it is seeking, i have tried outside, inside but same result.
iam running this http://gamesquare.co.uk/froyo.html but it stands version 2.2 in my phone. and radio 2.12.50.02_2
but can it be because i run dutty's leo sense as winmo os
Thats strange. If I were you I'd just keep trying different radio/rom/android build combinations. If you never get it working then it may be a hardware issue.
Where are you located? In many (most/all?) builds if you're not in the U.S. you have to edit the gps.conf file to give the gps your region.
Start here and see if it helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7278623&postcount=1
It's probably related to the gps.conf, search for more information if it still doesn't work. The HD2 gps locks on quite fast with the a-gps assist. Faster than all of my pnd and golf gps devices except Garmin with its hotfix.

Does GPS work and copilot live 8 on 2.3?

I've got a HD2 on the way and plan to load nand on from the get go. I need a working GPS though. Does copilot live 8 work on android 2.3?
I know theres something with editing a config file to get GPS working, whats the deal with this? is it still required? how often does it need to be done? Just trying to figure out the current situation with GPS. from the searches ive done, it doesn't work for some people. Is GPS working for most people, or is it hit or miss?
thanks.
Yes it works and yes on 2.3 and no you don't need to edit that GPS conf file any more.
thanks. my buddy is using MDJ's CyanogenMod 2.5, and his gps doesn't work. is there anything i can tell him to make it work? google maps only uses the cell towers to figure out the area he's in, he's let it try to get his exact position for 30+ minutes.

I used GPS on builds as early as 2.0 and it has all worked without any configuration - I have gpstatus installed and download a-gps data.
Google maps has locked to GPS in 10-30seconds 90% of the time, especially when stationary and sky relatively clear.
Usually longer if cloudy, indoors or moving - up to 3mins. But I would expect that tbh.
Copilot live 8 works fine on 2.6 for me. used it today - nice bit of software once POIs removed!! I still prefer GarminXT on WM6 for it's routing and display.

Everything should be working on that build
but theres a 2.6 update that works flawlessly for me worth a try
or
try this ginger build better than mdj in my opinion and has the gps fix included
JDMS beta 2.2 everything works and is faster than mdjs too

[Q] GPS on Windows Mobile vs Android. Which one is better?

Hi all, I am about to go on a trip where I will probably need to use my GPS more than ever.
Thanks to a brilliant developer tytung we now have AGPS on Android Gingerbread, but I have not yet been able to have the same results as I've had in WM 6.5.
What is your experience, is Android GPS on this device as good as in Windows Mobile?
I would like to use it on a wonderful island called Cyprus. I have already downloaded the iGo with the map, but so far GPS on Android with this phone has not convinced me.
Let me know what your thoughts are on this subject, and if I should try to use Android with the GPS or just flash WM6.5 for this trip.
Thank you all in advance.
On my TMOUS phone that uses Hyperdroid CM7 v2.1.0, it is as fast as I remember WM6.5 and is certainly as fast as my wife's MyTouch4G when finding the GPS signals. But I am using a customized gps.conf file that I optimized for my area. Checking AngelDeath's GPS thread, there isn't a Cyprus file to download. He suggests using the Europe or Turkey gps.conf files. Using Tytung's v1.7 NMEA file is working very fast. My first lock with the phone off overnight is now under 10 seconds. Relocks during the day are 5 seconds or less. I am not sure how fast a lock you would receive since you will be using a more "general" gps.conf file. But judging what others are experiencing on their Gingerbread builds using a much more general gps.conf that myself, I would suspect using your phone in an Android mode for GPS should work fine. But if have any doubt, then I would make sure to have WM6.5 operating on your phone.
Using the Tytung 1.7 libraries, my Android GPS performs equal or better than when I was using WM6.5.
Combine the suggestions of robrob777 (Tytung 1.7 libraries - from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1100114, whether NMEA or RPC pends on your ROM) and slbenz (......a customized gps.conf file, information available on http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/ , your performance will be same or even better.........enjoy you trip !!
As for AGPS goes... I think there's no difference between WM and Android anymore.
However, depending on the place you will go, you might want to take into consideration the GPS software available.
In my area, Garmin is the best, but it's not available on Android.
First of all I want to thank you all for contributing to this topic. I must try a new ROM with those updated libraries, to test it decently. So far I have been a MIUI adept and hopefully the new versions have better GPS support.
As I already said before, I will be using iGO my way, as it is the only off-line GPS software for which I was able to get the maps of Cyprus. I'll try to use it here in Belgium as soon as I download the Belgium map.
One thing that I liked on the WM6.5 was the quick GPS option, where you could just connect to any Wifi connection and update the file which would last for 1 week.
Any such option in the Android builds? I hope the roaming charges just for the AGPS aren't that high.
Anyone has any experience in this field?
Try gps status: tools-agps data-download
or the tool tytung provided in his thread, you can find it when you read the last five pages.
