hi,
i don't now if this is the right forum to ask for this question
i have installed froyo 2.2 on my hd2, i have one problem, and that is with the Gps i can't get any signal it just seeking and seeking, when i go in to google maps or navigation, could anybody help me with that problem
Did you make sure that GPS is enabled? Do you have a clear view of the sky? What build of froyo specifically are you running? What radio?
I'm running Bangsters 1.2a and it takes forever to find a GPS signal, but especially with Google apps. Waze seems to fair a bit better, but no where as fast as back in WinMo.

yes i turn gps on and i can see in top op the screen that it is seeking, i have tried outside, inside but same result.
iam running this http://gamesquare.co.uk/froyo.html but it stands version 2.2 in my phone. and radio 2.12.50.02_2
but can it be because i run dutty's leo sense as winmo os
Thats strange. If I were you I'd just keep trying different radio/rom/android build combinations. If you never get it working then it may be a hardware issue.
Where are you located? In many (most/all?) builds if you're not in the U.S. you have to edit the gps.conf file to give the gps your region.
Start here and see if it helps.

It's probably related to the gps.conf, search for more information if it still doesn't work. The HD2 gps locks on quite fast with the a-gps assist. Faster than all of my pnd and golf gps devices except Garmin with its hotfix.

Hi
i have read in a few other posts regarding GPS issues and Sat Nav software not working
now i have seen a few programs that 'kick off' the GPS and then runs the program and i have run these to no avail,
i was wondering if anyone else has not only had this issue but struggled to get it working, google maps seems to pick me up via GPS but tomtom is saying 'no gps device' go into settings within tomtom and set to internal gps device, and check gps status and no cannot see any satellites. i have had the phone outside inthe line of sight of the sky for an hour so me being inpatient isn't the issue, any help would be greatly appreciated
ta
Try this:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/GPS/GPS-Test-34335.shtml
Update QuickGPS.
If no satellites show up after a max of 5mins of you standing outside with clear view of the sky, then you either need to flash another radio or the gps is dead.
hi
thanks
have left phone outside running that, seems to be scanning com1-9..pausing for a second on port 3 then continuing. will let you know in 10 mins, what is flashing another radio involve?

ok stupid question time, but if it google maps seems to be working ok would that not suggest that the GPS radio is ok, and secondly if i did flash which one would i go for on that link you sent
i have radio version 1.09.25.14 protocol 52.49a.25.261u
there is a link
Download 1.09.25.14 / 52.49a.25.26W Radio only Megepload
Download HD_Blackstone_Radio 1.09.25.14 (with RUU) 4shared
am i flashing this even though my protocol is different?
and there is about another 10 files below all them called
Blackstone Rilphone.dll Cabs
all confusing can you help any more please
thanks
I don't believe anything google maps says in relation to GPS after it told me one of my non GPS phones had inbuilt gps, and then calculated my position using the mobile phone network.
As for which you need, well it depends on which rom you are running, whether it's a stock rom (bog-standard rom you get on device when you buy it), or a custom cooked rom from someone on the forums. I suggest you read up on it thoroughly then post in the correct radio thread if you want to ask any more questions regarding the right radio version you need.
fair do's
thanks
Did you have google maps open when you started Tomtom? That may have caused an error
hi
thanks for reply, no i open google maps it seems to find my location. close google maps, then open tomtom and is saying no gps device. the 'onboard' gps device is set on tomtom options it's just as if the gps reciever isn't picking up, same in other sat nav progams too, garmin is the same so makes me think is phone not software issue
AFAIK, Google Maps is A-GPS software, while TomTom, iGO and others are full GPS software.
Don't know about TomTom, but iGO DOES NOT work if A-GPS is enabled...
hmmmm. i'll give it a whirl, not got the phone withme at the mo, a mate is attempting to simunock it, agps is enabled so i will disable it see if that helps. tempted to get rid and get an effing iphone at this rate
Let us know how you go....
Don't give up, it;s a great phone
had the same issue with tomtom v7.450. using tomtom v7.916 now and it's running like charm
Just had replacement Touch HD delivered from Orange this morning, flashed to my usual ROM, and get exactly the same symptoms as Pete did.....
Tried:
TomTom
Memory map
HTC GPS Tool
Updating QuickGPS
Updating Radio ROM to latest version
Reflashing different OS roms
nothing makes a difference.
Not really keen to take it apart as i'll break the VOID sticker and probably end up in an argument with Orange, but Id bet any money that the GPS cable has come loose......so frustrating as im working abroad as of next week and i'll really use the GPS a lot......
Also just found out that the replacement handset is "refurb".....I bet the muppet that refurbed it didnt reconnect the GPS cable
i was wondering if changing radio version affects GPS? i've changed radio to install android but it barely works now even on WM. it works just after first boot of WM or android. but if i disable it then renable it, it doesnt even find satellites.
im going to change radio from 2.12.x and see if it persists.
anyone experienced this?
I'm using radio 2.12 Energy rom and Bangsters android. With this setup GPS works well in both systems. I can find a gps fix in my car with my hd2 just as quickly as my standalone magellan unit.
Yes...radio version effect GPS... I am using 2.12 as well, but I do not have problem with GPS fix.
I have seen certain version on radios that takes forever to get fix while some gets fix within 15sec (i did test myself by switching several version of radios in a same day). I also believe your location also is a factor as discussed in radio effecting battery life threads.
Im in Malaysia and using Maxis.
Could someone Tell me why GPS fix is so slow (with every android build yet)?? most times it takes 5-10 Minutes to find satellites with googlemaps /copilot .. is this a Known issue ?? My location is the Netherlands..
Do i need to set the something in the startup.txt ?
Get gps status from the market to download satellite information for a quicker fix, mine works in a matter of seconds
Even with GPS status.. the thing takes a long time to get a lock
Try the solution presented here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738982 and report.
What did the trick to me was:
1. Updating QuickGPS, on WinMO;
2. Installing GPS Status and downloading assistance data:
::: Settings&Configuration : GPS&Sensors: Manage AGPS data.
I am getting consistently fast locks now But what made the difference this time was updating QuickGPS on WinMo... Check my sig for details on my setup.

It certainly isn't useless, as many users have reported this as a solution. For me, it was the solution that definitely worked. I've tried every other method, including editing gps.conf file, using GPS status, etc, and the results weren't consistent. But after I updated my QuickGPS on WinMo, I have been getting consistent results, every time I try, as short as 5 seconds to get me a lock.
As you should know, some settings in WinMo still affect your hardware in Android: e.g., look at the "calibrate g-sensor in WinMo" recommendation. I think this is also the case with GPS.
But! what you can do in wimo is also possible in Android: getting AGPS... with GPS status..
so getting Agps information is not the problem here..
Possibility's
The radio ? with some radios with my winmo devices it took 5 minuts to get 6 satelites and with other radios (like blackstone 13.32.24xxx) it took 10 seconds to get 11 satelites .. in 10 seconds..
So I really think its Radio related..
Or the gps sensor isn't working 100% correctly..
Shouldn't we test some radio's for best gps performance.,
What is radio blackstone 13.32.24xxx??? never heard of it before.

Worked for me, thanks !! (it now locks in less than 10 sec, in comparison to several minutes before updating quickgps in Winmo).
The problem with some people in this forum is that they have to be smart ass, they will argue with you that there is no logic in your fix, even though it works. Too bad for them.

I've tried different radios and that didn't to absolutely anything to the GPS performance on Android. QuickGPS, on the other hand, gave me results. Even just using GPS Status didn't do anything for me.
By the way, A-GPS and QuickGPS assistance data are different things. QuickGPS can be useful to you even if you don't any signal when you are using GPS on your handset (if, of course, you have downloaded before your assistance data and it's up-to-date). To use A-GPS, you need to have signal...
Why don't your try this solution and see for yourself? You just have to update QuickGPS on WinMo. If you are using a light WinMo ROM, with no QuickGPS, try a regular stock or cooked ROM. The latest ChuckyDroid is a lite version, but has QuickGPS, though.
Try it, and then tell us if it worked for you.

some settings in winmo affect your hardware in android 'cause winmo is used to initialize the hardware, so that it has a certain state when booting android. this is due to the fact that our android drivers cannot initialize hardware (yet), so winmo is needed.
why should starting quickgps in winmo help in android? as far as i know all that quickgps does is downloading satellite position information to help the gps driver to fasten up the calculation of the current position in case of a cold fix.
if this would help in android, it would mean that the satellite data is some kind of stored *inside* the gps chip. otherwise andoid wouldn't be able to access the position data (orbit) of the satellites.
or am i completely wrong? if so, please help me and correct it...i'm just curious

This is correct. The satellite data is stored inside the GPS chip (this is written in the help file of the "GPS status" app).
It could be that because the android drivers are lacking in the HD2, we can only read from the GPS but not write (this is why updating the satellites work from WinMo but not from Android. because android can't write to the GPS chip).

ok, then some kind of "quickgps" for android would help too...
so winmo is not necessary/needed for gps to work properly.

Thats a Good Point!
Holy Cow it worked! I mean it works!
Who can argue with that?
Sat data is input to gps chip. And the data is usually good for 7 days.
So if you use quickgps in winmo to update sat data, it will also make gps fast in android too at least a week.
gps status app in android also has the ability to download sat data, but quickgps in winmo seems better.
DON'T THINK ABOUT LOGIC. JUST TRY IT. IF you now a place where winmo gps works very fast, get a gps lock under winmo and then boot android. You will see that Android now gets a lock in seconds too.
Most people have problems with gps because their gps.conf file is empty, or they are not "really" in open air.
Gps will get a fix more difficult:
- If the weather is cloudy
- If there are buildings near you
- If you are actually inside a building
- If you are in a vehicle and vehicle is moving fast.
- If you don't have the assistance data in your gps chip.
- If you force your gps chip to do a cold start (instead of hot or warm start)
- If you don't have a working reliable internet connection (to download satellite data to aid in calculation)
- If you have an empty gps.conf file
Sometimes if I can't get a gps lock quickly, before blaming Android I reboot to winmo and see it doesn't always get a fast lock. Environment is a huge factor. So before thinking it is an Android problem, reboot to winmo use quickgps to download sat data and wait for a accurate fix in google maps or similar app. (google maps will first get your location from google location server which is usually only accurate to several hundred meters. Make sure you wait for the actual lock with a few meters of accuracy.
Since you "have to" load winmo before android (as no nand boot exists yet) just download sat data every few days before launching haret. It would be a good idea to get a fix and then launch haret.
The trick with quickgps also works in my device. Now android is almost perfect. Camera, gps work, no freeze. I only want 720p playback.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
This theory makes me wonder.
Why is there a xtra.bin in the windows folder?
If there was an issue with the GPS in winmo it was sometimes needed to delete that file and download it again via the quickgps tool.
I wish I could try the quickGPS solution but unfortunately I'm using a very light version of windows mobile and quickGPS wasn't included. I tried to download and install one but got the error message about it not being signed or trusted.
So I can't figure out how to run QuickGPS and take advantage of these fixes.
I've got a HD2 on the way and plan to load nand on from the get go. I need a working GPS though. Does copilot live 8 work on android 2.3?
I know theres something with editing a config file to get GPS working, whats the deal with this? is it still required? how often does it need to be done? Just trying to figure out the current situation with GPS. from the searches ive done, it doesn't work for some people. Is GPS working for most people, or is it hit or miss?
thanks.
Yes it works and yes on 2.3 and no you don't need to edit that GPS conf file any more.
thanks. my buddy is using MDJ's CyanogenMod 2.5, and his gps doesn't work. is there anything i can tell him to make it work? google maps only uses the cell towers to figure out the area he's in, he's let it try to get his exact position for 30+ minutes.

I used GPS on builds as early as 2.0 and it has all worked without any configuration - I have gpstatus installed and download a-gps data.
Google maps has locked to GPS in 10-30seconds 90% of the time, especially when stationary and sky relatively clear.
Usually longer if cloudy, indoors or moving - up to 3mins. But I would expect that tbh.
Copilot live 8 works fine on 2.6 for me. used it today - nice bit of software once POIs removed!! I still prefer GarminXT on WM6 for it's routing and display.

Everything should be working on that build
but theres a 2.6 update that works flawlessly for me worth a try
or
try this ginger build better than mdj in my opinion and has the gps fix included
JDMS beta 2.2 everything works and is faster than mdjs too

hey all
i have read and reread and looked all over. so either i am looking wrong or just plan dumb.
but i installed a build on my HTC HD2 that said it did everything i needed. and it seems to work ok. but the one thing i would LOVE to find is a stable build that has a GPS that on maps will tell me right where i am. the one on the build i installed said it worked, but i get a 20 block radius as being the best i can get.
i travel alot and when i am lost in a new city i like to find my way around and the GPS maps saves me many times.
also this build seems to set different call volumes depening on who i am calling.
but any suggestions on a good GPS would be great
thanks
jared
and yes i turn on GPS before i go into maps. so it should be more accurate then it is.
you need to give more info, like which build are you using?
GPS is known to be inaccurate when you're in a big city with really high buildings, so my guess is you're not getting a GPS fix so the device turns on network locationing.
Check the build in my sig, I get a fixation around 1 meter, but I doubt your build doesn't give the same accuracy.
My advice is to learn how to read maps without GPS or internet connections, it's faster that way, at least for me.
Hi Jared,
My personal advice is to buy a seperate BT gps receiver. The receiver in the HD2 is not the best one, found the one in the HD alot better.
You can buy a good MKT or Sirf3 which will beat the HD2 every single time in accuracy and speed for like 30 Euro or 45 dollars on ebay.
There are nice free tools on the market that will let you use the BT gps receiver.
You may want to look into the information on this thread here in the forum:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630
Helped me to quickly obtain a GPS lock. Depending on your build, it could be optimized for a different country you reside in. Hence, changing your gps.conf file for your area should help.

Try this build: tytung v 2.6
It's a stock Gingerbread ROM. It works perfect, never had any issues like different call volume or something. And for the GPS, try the fix provided above. It takes about 30 seconds for me to get a good and accurate fix.
