Went by Googles "Village" at SXSW. In one location they had ASUS Transformer Primes as the demo tablet (w/ the Verizon Galaxy Nexus as the demo phone).
but in the other location ("the Maps house") they had the WIFI Xoom upgraded to ICS (same build) demoing google maps. FWIW, they also had the samsung chromebooks as demos as well.
It's nice to see that the Xoom continues to feature in Google's plans.
Yeah it's a glad but, you know it was more amazing to see Google using Xoom for their demo BEFORE they bought Motorola.
Now that Motorola belong to Google it seems normal to use such as a Xoom for demos, don't you guess so?

It's a nice machine, wouldn't be without mine! Now it's rooted and running ICS of course...

Google IO is around the corner, there is rumours that google is going to announce a new nexus similar tablet.
should i wait till after google IO, if no new announcement then get a xoom or should i just get a XOOM anyway.
i really want a device that will be supported directly from google (ie, update straight from google).
any more rumours on the nexus line of tablet?
what do you guys think? will google announce a google tablet in the IO?
Buy the xoom from Costco you can return it within 60 days I believe and if something comes out you can get your refund no questions asked

i believe the xoom is the nexus of tablets. it was googles flagship device at their conference and it is the device that they always demo.

get the Xoom takes devices like 3 to 4 months to come out after those events. Then you'll say should Iget the nexus tablet or wait for the Xoom 2. What I'm saying is something better is always on the horizon.

Since you're in the UK, I would take a look at the Asus Transformer first, IMHO.
I was under the impression that the Xoom was gonna be Google's device....and also, on that note, since for now Google said no to company mods(ex. Touchwiz UX, etc.) then wouldn't every tablet running honeycomb get their updates right away?

Apparently.
Either way, the Xoom is running stock 3.0, it will get updates just as fast as any other stock 3.0 tablet.

I thought so ty.
but from my understanding, although the Xoom suppose to be the nexus of tablet, but this still confuse me, the recent update doesn't come stright from google. it came from motorola.
which means if google decide to release a new patch, its down to motorola to deliver to us. and if they choose to delay it, it will be a bad thing.
for example, waiting for 2.3 on nexus one is long enough, forget about on the motorola droid or other HTC handsets.

It was never advertised as such, but seeing as how everyone at Google working on android probably has a Xoom, I wouldn't worry about updates. The 3.0.1 update came through incredibly fast. Because the software is completely 100% stock and most android tablets are running the same tegra 2 platform, updates can happen much quicker.
Don't expect a nexus type tablet till after tablets become more popular, the same way it happened with phones. The xoom isn't the "official " nexus tab but it is the one considered it for now. You will not have to make this decision until next year, then we may see a nexus tablet or xoom2

Consider our Xooms to be the equivalent of ADP1. If no one is familiar or hasn't been around Android for that long:
ADP1 or Android Dev Phone 1, was not a Nexus device, but was the Original Google Development device. The device was incredibly similar to a G1, only released earlier than the G1, with a lot more downloadable goodies than the G1 had initially(pre community development). But the only 2 big differences in the G1 and ADP1 where radio lock and boot loader.
2 years post G1/ADP1 we have the Nexus 1.
I have heard somewhere that GT10.1 will be the first tab to offer Netflix access.
So... any hints about this in regart of retial wifi model from NYC?
No i hadnt heard anything but if you want the netflix app and you have the galaxy tab from ny there are versions on xda which will work on any Andriod OS

Has anyone actually gotten any of these Netflix apps to work on the IO 10.1 tab??? I tried all of them I could find, and tried all of the variations on the build.prop file I could find and it never worked. I read somewhere that the Netflix app just plain doesn't support Honeycomb yet.
I called Netflix to complain that none of my 5 android devices are supported. Got to talking with the guy and he told me support for the new galaxy tab was in the works. Not sure if he was talking about the 10.1 or the already released tab.

I was on a fence for either Asus TF or Samsung 10.1 but as for now there is no Netflix player available for HC based Android devices.
Strange, Xoom already on a market substantial amount of time... but Netflix is not anxious to support it. So, time will tell.
I'm posting to the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 forum, but my question is really about the several tablets similar to it.
I've been disappointed at how slow Samsung has been on software updates to the Galaxy phones. Still no GB on the US models. On the other end the Nexus phones are developer reference platforms and get the first updates from Google.
Are any of the tablets similar to the SG10.1 (Xoom, Ideapad, Thrive, Transformer, Viewsonic,..) better choices from the standpoint of getting software updates.
As far as I know Google doesn't have a developer reference tablet that they directly support, but what comes the closest?
The Xoom is the the "flagship" Honeycomb tablet, so it will always receive updates first. In fact, Xooms are already on Android version 3.2.

Only for those in US. Many people in UK have bought Xoom's thinking this was the same situation but Motorola have admitted that the US Xoom is the only Xoom that is a Google Experience Device. Non-US Xooms are not. I personally think Motorola have grossly missold Xoom's in UK and possibly many other non-US locations as well. I feel sorry for those who have purchased the Xoom under this pretence who are still stuck with Android 3.0 despite US Xoom's being 2 Android versions ahead.
Pretty poor show by Motorola if you ask me.
Too bad the flagship honeycomb device is Motorola.

To be more precise, only xoom wi-fi version. Verizon 3g doesn't come under google experience flagship tablet.

The Xoom but I love My Galaxy tab 10.1
Does it matter anymore? I thought i read that google was done with honeycomb after 3.2 and no further updates would be done. I could be wrong, made this up due to lack of sleep, or something else.
I believe the Xoom is the first to be updated. I feel SGT is the last.
TouchWiz
I see that Samsung is rolling out the proprietary TouchWiz update
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/27/samsung-to-roll-out-galaxy-tab-10-1-touchwiz-ux-update-on-august/
Does this mean that the Galaxy Tab going forward will have a harder time keeping up with Google updates.
Is there ever going to be a "Nexus" tablet with updates directly from Google?

Let me check my crystal ball or call Andy Rubin.....
I don't think anybody can answer that. Until it's announced, it's all speculation. There was talk of one before I/O, but it didn't happen.
Upgrade is due soon. I was wondering which phone is best to get and use with the Xoom for when icecream OS is released for both moblies and the tablet? Would a motorola Moblie phone be the best to get?
I might personally in the same boat as you and I am looking at two options
1 least favourable the Nexus prime when it's released I simply Don't trust android non experience devices to get updates (I mean look at this so called experience device) I'm in the UK and only got the only some countries are experience devices after I brought it not that I regret it.
2 samsung galaxy s 2 with wp7 in whatever it's codename is anyway but I am really loving the windows phone action right now
That's assuming it comes to orange uk where my brother gets 40% off and that could change everything.

Just in time for the holiday season, last I heard. Around Oct-Nov.
I'm currently contemplating myself whether I should get the Atrix now or bwait 2-3 months for the Prime. Decisions decisions!
Xoomed from my xda app using send.
I see alot posts about ICS. Haven't read up on it at all. Perhaps I will. My question is what makes you think that it will be made available for current phones? As far I'm aware no 2.3 devices are upgradable to 3.0 or any version to version x. Maybe root and rom for a half feature os. I just think its overly optimistic. Seems were always forced to buying a new device that's shipped with it to get that os. I'm glad zoom got to 3.2 its not the norm that I've seen. Were talking about whole upgrade not .1
Your non-us Xoom isnt a GED sadly (unless you bung on the US image)
so Nexus Prime would be the obvious choice, second I'd guess the Nexus S
after that it's probably a bit of a free-for-all who gets ICS updates - Moto/Samsung will probably want to be first with having a bit of current trend of being in favor of google, moto for the xoom + being pwnd by Goog, and Samsung trying to make themselves look good with the Nexus S and probably the Prime
If Nexus One owners are lucky they'll get a hint of the action too
Mr. Schmidt in a 2 second quote confirms ICS to be released in October/November of this year. We already knew sometime in Q4, but it's good to hear an official confirmation!
Droid Life News: Eric Schmidt: Ice Cream Sandwich Coming In October/November
Just looking out!
hopefully that equals nexus prime and/or xoom2 being released by thanksgiving
For some reason I've been pretty much banking on the fact that ICS is coming out in October. I can't remember where I heard it (or even if I heard it), but October/November cannot come soon enough.
I had my mind set on December for some reason, so keeping to that so not to dissapointed by the delays.

That's the big question, especially setting as Google now own Motorola too.

Not to be anal about it but Google does not own Motorola yet. Google as entered into a definitive agreement (i.e. contractually binding) to purchase Motorola Mobility but it still has to go through regulatory approval in US and EU before it can be completed. The acquisition will probably not be complete before Q1 2012.

I must admit that this would be a smart move on Google's part. I mean... I love the Droid's: I think they are the best by far. And with Verizon's network and their 4G LTE speeds, and with the release of the Droid Bionic, we have another epic phone joining Team Droid.
If Google were to buy out Motorola Mobility, would this make the Droid family the new Nexus? Meaning... the Droid brand would then belong to Google? If so, I am looking forward to that! The Droid's would become the official Google devices that get all the updates first.

Well Google has said that Motorola will be kept as a separate entity and they would still have to go through the same process as everyone else to be able to make the next Nexus phone.

Yeah after looking at an article about this I see that now. Still would be a neat thought if the Droid family was the official name brand for the official Google devices.
anyone see that news saying thyxe think the nexus prime will now be called samsung galaxy nexus?
rubbish name IMO makes the Nexus phone sound more like a spin-off of a Samsung Galaxy range and not a Google phone... pft.
anyway I think and hope that the Xoom gets an update - there doesnt seem to be any big 'a new ICS tablet' rumors really around the corner - not like there was with the HC Nexus tablet of the past... and didnt they show ICS on the Xoom at Google I/O?

I'm sure if anything can handle gb then it can handle ics so our xooms being a ged we should get ics preety fast.
Also I.hope that random tipster was talking crap about galaxy nexus. Nexus prime/three/HD would all be fine.

Yup.
Samsung Nexus whatever fine, but Samsung Galaxy Nexus seems too much leaning on Samsung's end than Googles... if its suppose to be a GED you'd expect more from Google end than the manufacturer...
anyway - not long to go - surprised there isnt a countdown somewhere
