Play store: Admob Ads - Epic 4G General

I wake up this morning with a green "+" in my notification bar. So i scroll down the bar and to my dismay its an advertisement.... Adware on my phone! As I'm sure most of you woke up to the same thing, if you updated to the Play Store. Turns out Play store by default has a setting enabled called "admob ads"
I guess it doesnt collect data on how to advertise things for you, so its not technically adware, but pretty damn annoying.
I use my phone for work almost all day long. I barley can stand it when I see google maps show an ad when I search for a clients address.

The ad mob setting has been there for awhile. I have always had it disabled so no adware for me.

Isn't adware defined by the action of displaying ads rather than collecting data - hence the name adware...
or is my logic too... logical?
Regardless, here is Google's official statement, from the "learn more" link in the admob settings: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/html/mobile-about.html
It says the exact opposite of your assertion - the admob preference is explicitly to decide whether ads are based on your interests, with no option to stop the collection of data. That setting only decides if the ad server has access to the data, which will be collected either way.
Also, it only pertains to apps that display ads within, with no mention of ads in the status bar - yours had to have been caused by something external to google play; it has nothing to do with the admob preferences. Be sure to confirm this when your next popup occurs, okay? Thanks in advance
EDIT: Here is a screenshot of the Play store's settings screen:
[The new XDA app doesn't seem to upload images properly... stand by for correction via computer...]
It clearly shows that activating the option, rather than turning ads on or off, will decide whether the ads that will be displayed either way are generic or personalized

It's not Play, it's an app you installed that's spamming you. Download Airpush and see which app it is.

Go to you sdcard and view by " Date ". There will be a folder that you'd never seen before as the first folder. I forgot the name but its happened to me too just delete that folder and if you recall the app you downloaded last I would get rid of that too.

100% it's this. There was a live wallpaper which downloaded the AirPush adware bull****. The removal app on the market worked flawlessly. I keep it still to use when I download any app. The app I got it from came from the Amazon Market...

Thanks, oh I have mp3 music downloader app installed too. So only way to remove that airpush ad is to remove my app?
Airpush. yes, I already installed that too. those had a different kinda ad pushing to xapush.com or something. I got rid of those, but these ones with the *star* still pop up!! I cleared the earlier one, and just as I write, they're promoting another "Game of the day"
arrrgggghhh pisses me off
anybody know what I can disable? some apk somewhere I'm guessing, but what?
its not an Android Market ad is it? cos I disabled Goggle's 'interest-based ads' already too!
Anybody ideas from anyone else? Anybody else getting this?

Do you habe GPSFix installed on your phone?
Well it's a Market app that's pushing this **** out, so uninstall one and one app until it stops.
I don't have GPSFIX installed. And I've so many market apps I don't know how I'm supposed to fin the guilty one
i've never seen anything vulgar as that on my phone
Why don't you all just do what is said some posts before and install AirPush Detector from the Market, it will guide you to the app that is causing the spam. Simply remove the app, and you are fine again.
Tunee music pushes adds like this as we'll.... But I've only got them with the gingerbread and up version of said program, which always gives failed downloads on the note for me. The pre gingerbread version works great and doesn't deliver these ads for me. those types of ads are certainly annoyimg...

Google Now screwed after update?

Yesterday I got a Google Now update to show the Sport Teams and Public Alerts. Somehow the update screwed my Weather reporting. When I open Now, I get the ususal Weather card with proper weather in Montreal:

}
When I tap on it, instead of showing me the current location, it displays Washington DC? WTF
I remember that previously, it used to redirect me to a google.ca URL and now it goes stright to a google.com URL:
Also, when I search for something on Google Now, the search results are stuck at the bottom, instead of scrolling all the way up like they used to:
Reverting back to old version solves all problems:
Not happy at all. I did a factory reset of the tablet, hoping it will solve the issues, nada, nicht, niet. I also reset the Chrome and Search apps by removing their cache and other stored data. Anyone knows how to fix this? Apparently, to properly report the weather location, the URL needs to go to google.ca instead of google.com one. I would appreciate some help with this issue, thank you guys.
OK, more updates on this issue. The ONLY way I was able to disable the Chrome setting that pushes the verification to google.com (instead of google.ca) was by disabling my US VPN connection, then resetting both Chrome and Google Search apps. Now I have an option in Google Search > Privacy & accounts > Search on google.com:
Still, I'm not more advanced... Now the weather is reported from Quebec city, instead of Washington, heh. No Montreal love... and is such great city:
Apparently, this is ongoing for a while and no developers reported a fix to the Google Now bug.
Does anyone knows where Google Chrome user profile is stored on the tablet?
Idk what's wrong with yours but I use mine everyday and haven't had a single issue with it. Just go into apps and clear there data for chrome and see if that helps

I'm in Montreal Canada. There are other people in States who have the same problem:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35465
I noticed that on my Galaxy Nexus phone I did not have the Precise Location dot marked as blue... and it asked me to "Use Precise Location". As soon I did that, my phone started to report wrong locations also. The card is correct, but Google Chrome is not... now both on my phone and tablet.
Yeah I have no idea I just did one by asking how's the weather and I works fine. Is your GPS enabled?

Google+ just ate 205mb of my mobile data wtf...

So, recently, i randomly receive a message from my carrier telling me that i am about to run out of data.
However, weirdly enough i was on wifi and i wasn't using my phone in any abnormal ways.
When i check the data usage i see a sudden spike in data use caused by Google+.
It listed that within a day google+ ate 205 MB of data in a "background" process.
The only thing that i can think of that could have even used that amount of data would be photos uploading in the background.
However after i search for the upload settings i found out that the current google+ doesnt contain a "off" switch for automatically uploading photos.
The only thing you can control is that if they are posted in public or not.
There isn't even a option to only upload when on wifi to restrain google+
Is there a way to block google+ from accesing 3g or preventing it from just dumping every photo that is taken on the interwebs?
The app is being quite intrusive, even more than facebook at this moment...
Also if i go past my limit i have to pay a lot per extra mb that is used up.
I am using a Nexus4 with a stock OTA Android 4.2.2 and google+ runs at 3.6.1.44747389
There IS an option in google+ settings to enable instant upload only on wifi. Look for it.
Cheers

i have, sure you have the same version? i have seen youtube videos of google+ settings menus with even a "off" switch on the instant upload.
My version does not have one.
also for some reason in the last 30 mins it gobbled up another 50mb, like WTF!!?!?
currently i have just disabled the mobile internet connection for the phone, if i leave the phone like this it will be past it's limit before dinner...
Nice piece of extra info, i force closed the app about half an hour ago aswell, apparently it restarted and continued to drain my data, im not sure anymore if this just regards photos or if the app has gone crazy.

Menu -> Settings -> Photos and Videos,
It's the only option under it right before "About"
FYI version 3.6.0 on mine
I do recommend you to uninstall the app. Reboot your phone. Than install the Google+ app again. Then follow the following mentioned steps.
I am using build number 3.6.1.44747389 from the play store.
Check if you have updated your version to the latest one in the play store.
If you have, then open the google+ app. At the top right hand corner there are 3 dots. Click it. Click settings. Next, you will be in a settings menu.
Scroll down. Under Photos and Videos there should be an option named instant upload. Click it.
You have options to change 1) When to upload photos/videos.
Thats what you have to change to wifi only.
Other than that there should not be any other problem.
- Good Luck.

That might happen due to google plus uploading ALL of your photos/videos again.
Strange, even because i had the phone connected to wifi with fibre internet on the isp active, so then it uploaded stuff to 3g when it could have just used wifi....
OP, please keep to one thread, dup thread closed, Thanks.

}
things I've tried to use to solve this data leak:
- disabling auto sync
- restricting background data on my wifi router
- disable location via mobile network.
and those above didn't help. the consumption keeps rising as i currently write this... any help please?
EDIT: SOLVED!
i went to settings - apps - running
i killed the MEDIA service, then went to cached apps (the top left button on the same screen) and killed MEDIA. the wifi up and down icon stopped instantly.
Turns out, the Downloads app is the one causing the trouble. So by force closing it through its app info, you're stopping this hog.
5 minutes later it showed up again, and i force closed it again.... still testing. maybe greenify it?
EDIT2: greenified and solved:
I can even go to downloads app, and still no download loop

Hey this problem is driving me nuts. Can u explain how you greenieifed it? I've bought the donate version and when I try and greenjfy it by selecting the running service from 'apps' it just tries to greenify the 'settings' which obviously doesn't work.

search for the apps from the list from the greenify app itself.
or click on the search button and launch "downloads" app then greenify that
The problem also is related to the playstore app on android 4.2.2 which causes that loop. i manually updated the playstore and the problem is gone even without greenify
i don't have a link right now, but the thread related to this is somewhere in the Q&A forum (if I'm right)

What is App Optimization exactly?

Ok, I just received the N910FXXU1COJ3 OTA on my DBT N-910F with all the security updates. Great, but I did notice that the conveniet app manager feature that killed background processes inside Smart Manager is now gone and from the looks of things, there is a new "alternative" ambiguously called App optimization, within the battery section.
Now I for one am getting pretty tired of this inconsistency and constant feature swapping and come here seeking information. Can anyone actually clear things up for me and explain what exactly App optimization means. Will it simply kill the apps background services and if so, why is the minimum timeout 3 days? I also heard that it is more like a disable fuature for the selected apps, meaning no activity whatsoever, like notifications.
Is there any way that i can make use of the convenient "garbage collection" that Smart Manager used to offer, or am I hopelessly stuck dealing with Samsung`s ADD?
Thanks, any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Ok. I have a call recorder. It just happens to stop working after awhile. I went to app optimazation and disabled it. Does that mean now that my Call Recorder app doesn't apply to these rules and should never shut off or stop working if I disabled it for that app. It's so annoying because all of sudden your looking and your call isn't being recorded. I have to open the app...then it works again. Am I using the app optimazation option improperly?
When I bought the pro version; a message appeared explaining to disable app optimazation for the app so it continuously works. Is this right? And I'm just dealing with an app problem or I'm I not using this feature properly. I want my call recorder to always be working. [email protected]

App Optimization is Doze mode, that simple
You have to disable App Optimization for apps that should always run in background or be accessible without opening the app itself like Tesla Unread, Torchie, some reminder apps an some e-mail apps. In my expirience if an app is being optimized it will not show any notifications and such until "acitivized" by opening the app itself.

Apps that I don't need running in background and have used more battery than I think they should when in background are set to "Always power saving". Exaples: 9GAG. Previously I used Greenify for these apps.
Apps that need to stay active at all times are set to "Disable for". Examples: Reminders, Tesla Unread.
Most of other apps are set to "Automatically optimising".
