Just like other android smart phones even my Arc has a very short battery backup and at times it gets heaten up...mostly while playing games! The reason is obvious, i use custom kernel and push the cpu frequency to the hardware's limit. But to be honest battery backup on stock rom or kernel was not good either. So i tried few tricks and they worked out pretty well.
1. Try to charge your phone after shutting it down.
{My take : Your phone will not only get charged pretty fast but it also wouldn't get heaten up at times!}
Frequency : whenever its possible
2. Fully drain the battery and then put it on charging. Yha its quite same as point number 1 as the phone would be getting charged in the power off mode.
{My take : your phone's battery backup will increase if done at regular intervals}
Frequency : atleast twice a week.
3. Whenver possible charge your phone via usb cable (desktop pc or laptop)
{My take : some might have felt that the charger and the phone gets freaking hot while charging...well i did. Its cause of the varience in voltage supply. }
I myself tried this stuff and it worked pretty well for my Arc. Difference aint huge..but still its worth it!

This is my own method that I usually use:
- Charge to 100%
- Make a CWM backup
- Use the phone as usual until battery runs low
- Advanced Restore backup the /batt partition
- Enjoy fully charged battery
Problem?

1. Who will turn the phone off when charging? Remember that you CANNOT RECEIVE ANY CALLS while doing this.
2. This is not recommended twice a week, this must be done all the time in my opinion.
3. What's the catch with the USB charging?!
Anyway, as I saw your other posts, you're just trying to say a phrase in 3-4 replies which I find if offensive.
This [how to] guide is nothing but useless.
The method used by me as follows:
Try to avoid charging the phone when your battery is not in the red zone. Don't plug it into computer with the USB cable when you can use WIFI file transfer.
Remember that every battery has a life cycle of about 500 charges. When it will reach this point, it will drain faster and faster. So don't charge it for 10 minutes unless you're forced to do it.
I'm sure that maybe some links to other sugestions will emerge on this thread, but I don't care because this is what I'm doing with my phone and it's working like a charm. The phone I ditched for my arc S was a P910i which lasted for 5 and half years with the original battery, still getting 3 days out of it with normal use.
My laptop is 2 years and 3 months old and the battery still lasts more than 3 hours (new lasted for 4+). I keep it out of the laptop while on charger and I use it only when I really need it.
I hope this helps you!

Well if you found my posts useless or offensive then you must check the 'few' things you posted.....some of them are really funny! Lol
You dont have any right to say any thing about anybody's work....cause you didnt try it yourself.! And you said about charging the phone when the battery is in red zone...well it seems you are the one whos repeating things...as i already said that! And the thing you said was quite useless about the laptop as it got both A.C. and D.C. transformer...which unfortunately no phone has. And hence we cant charge the phone after removing the battery (try it )
Amd for the record...i do the same things woth my laptop and it gives a battery life of 6.5 hours, the funny part being that the manufacture assures the battery to last just 3.5-4 hours!
SO JUST BUG IT!

1. He never said to turn off your phone while charging. He said to turn your phone off and then charge I.E. Offline charging. READ before you POST.
2. Rechargeable batteries are not meant to be drained EVERYTIME before you charge. Do that too often and you will damage your battery permanently. This information came from various reliable sources and not your opinion.
3. It has been reported, not proven, numerous times by members and developers that battery lasts longer when charged by USB. From personal experience I am pretty sure it does.
You are better off learning to read and knowing your facts before going on lecturing others about posting junk, because what you posted WAS useless crap.

Hi People,
first of all, sorry for my bad english
Ok, here we go!
I tried to get longer battery life as many other people..
At the End i was at 60% Battery Drain only in 6 hours in the night (when i sleep)
Then i made a complett reset of everything, not only my rom, even more my method i took to save Battery...
I made a first test and it is faboulus!!!
I took the fresh Android Revolution HD 2.0.9 Rom and the RomCleaner.
In my first test i unload the battery totaly 100% _totaly_, then plug in USB -> Reset everything and format everything. Then I removed everything from the Revolution HD Rom Apps like HTC APPs and some other like HTC Facebook, Tweeter, Locations and GMail..
I took the modified Rom to the Phone and for a little bit Style i took the MultiCulti Theme thereafter inside.
Then rebooting, turning on WLAN with key (its always on, when wlan is in range) and plug it off from usb.
As last "step" i took the Phone to my car and charged it with an "Hama USB Cigarette Loader" (He loads the Accu with many more Power, i knew from airplane modells that it is better for the accu to load it with more power)
The Hama loader loads with 2000 mamp and not like the original loader with 500 mamp.
Ok, here my first result after 15 hours:
- WLan always on
- Made 4 normal phonecalls
- wrote 3 sms
- nothing on the homescreens, (but everything installed (with usb plugged in pc))
- turned display to 15% and took a normal Wallpaper with darker colors.
15 hours on - Battery is at 90 %
...hmmm realy n1
let me think... 10% = 15h | 100% = 150 h +/- 10% (for more or less us) = 6 Days
Today, i will start again and make a better modified rom (yesterday i tested only but didn´t think what i realy need and what not.)
I will first stop it when my Desire HD runs 10 Days without charging..
Stay tuned i will be back in some Days
In my opinion, 10 days duration might be able to achive by using airplane mode.
but that make the DHD a dumbphone
Yes, try Airplane mode. My 3 year old iPhone lasted for 19(!) days in airplane mode.

That doesn´t give you more battery.
The dhd has got a s-lcd display all that matters is how bright background light is.
in fact you could end up using more battery with a dark background if you have to set the background light brighter to see something
In my first test i unload the battery totaly 100% _totaly_, then plug in USB -> Reset everything and format everything.

i´m not sure hat you meant. If you wiped everything/installed rom when the battery was at 0%(unload the battery totaly 100% _totaly_) you will mess up the displayed battery %.
the rom you use resets the battery stats when first run. the phone "remembers" the battery power at that time as 100% . while that wont affect the actual lasting time you can´t rely on the displayd battery %
if it´s just a typo nevermind
i wish you luck in your effort
ps.:airplane mode would bring good battery life but shutting the dhd down would give even more time before the battery is empty !!!
If its battery life your after why don't you buy a Johns Phone, google it. The battery will last in excess of three weeks.
That's nothing. I haven't charged my phone for 11 DAYS!! And it will last at least another 6 hours when I switch it on!!!

I guess he'll reach real [email protected]
Atm I think he simply overcharged the battery a little and the battery calibration is broken for the moment.

Possible cure of battery issues
Ok so at the moment O2 have lost there network ability and I am on stock rom 1.72, and all I have done is turn the Android web browser to enable plugins-on demand. Anyway just returned home from my night shift and the phone still has 90% charge left??? (Phone unplugged 1930).
The reason why I am stating this is because of the Apple Macbok Air issue and flash being installed as it massively drains the macbook airs battery, and Adobe have recently released an update that rectifies this issue.

I hate the limited battery of the DHD as much as anyone else but honestly, I'd rather charge it once a day or every 18 hours or so if I use it a lot than have settings like mobile data off etc. I bought the phone to use it and the features it has, not to watch battery % and squeeze out more time per charge by turning it into nice looking phone that doesn't get used.
I unplugged mine at 10 am and by 2 pm I was sitting at less than 40% and rarely used it today. I normally get a full day, but today seems it was special
No ranting but just saying i like the shiny stuff on the desktops too, but 3 hours and then problem ahead ....not nice.
I've had my phone for 3 months and just today it messed up. Funny eh?
Hi all (new here..)
Totally agree(with two posts higher). Such brilliant phone with so many nice features, and some people just use it to improve the batt life.
Nonsense.
Use sense.
Use everything that offers. Enjoy it. You'll enjoy more using it at full and charging every day, than saving battery with non usage.
I know i'll enjoy it for 6 months, then better one will come, and we shall all yearn for it. Phones life is too short to bother with energy, after all you can charge it almost anywhere, anytime. Except if you live in the middle of siberian tundra. That is bit annoying for charging...
Just imagine after 20 years someone will read this thread and say: ''Father, you really had tough life back there, didn't you have any of these atomic and plutonium batteries? You actually had to charge them?''
lol

Swyped from my sexy galaxy tab
"please read any comments as some are useful"
Before you start doing this make sure you have time on your hands.
Follow it step by step...
Read the entire set of steps and comments first.
Do not deviate.
If you are having issue's with it not charging fully. "70% to 90% and no further." then begin at step 7
If you have Xrecovery installed wipe battery stats first to reset the battery cache to the defaults.
This post will not talk about apps or any odd mods.
It's here to clear up on how to properly optimize the battery in your phone.
The battery has a cache file used to set the top and bottom battery level.
Today i am gona teach you how to set it correctly using nothing more than your phone and charger.
While doing this it will also properly "cycle" the cells.
This leads to the final part of my guide.
Damaged batteries.
If your life on the battery when using only airplane mode.
Is very bad.
Then you should be careful.
1. Check for any swelling or deformation on the battery.
2. Battery gets very warm while charging on standby in airplane mode.
If found Discontinue guide and replace with new battery.
And calibrate again from step 1.
-Enjoy
1. Charge your phone fully to 100%
2. Plug out your charger & switch off your phone.
3. Remove the battery and plug in the charger.
4. Re-insert your battery
This is sets the top end battery parameter to a higher state allowing for further charging.
Should read 88% now.
5. Keep a eye on your phone as it charges!!!
Remove the back plate and feel if it's getting hot "it should not be a issue"
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5
Repeat this no more than 2 to 5 times till the battery will not charge further
A few extra may be required...
The battery may get stuck at 70% to 99% "most of the time 88%"
The cells have now reached full potential
IF in the case that it keeps charging after the 4th time your battery is fully optimized Enjoy, Continue with step 7
7. Let your phone run down it's battery
Don't use the phone aggressively
Leave it till it switches itself off
Now it has marked the very lowest point of the cell in the cache
8. Don't leave the battery empty, begin charging as soon as possible.
If your phone does not switch on right away.. relax.
Just leave it on charge for about a hour "will switch itself on"
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 a few times.
You will notice each time that the battery may charge just slightly bellow 100%
Getting closer to 100% each time
10.Soon it will read 100%
It has now marked the top charged point for the cells
If step 7&8 does not bring the battery to 100% use the battery calibration app from the market.
Don't rush.. take it calm and easy.
Enjoy your properly set, fully optimized battery.
If you are planning on flashing a new rom you can copy "data/system/batterystats.bin"
And copy it back once you are done flashing.
This way you don't lose the optimization.
The battery does have over current protection it should be just fine.
Still be careful.
This knowledge is based on direct experience building electronic projects for over 23years that require rechargeable cells and the nightmares i had with a bad x10 chipset..
REMEMBER THAT I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONE BLOWS UP ETC.
:- final edit 2011/9/12 -:- 3:09PM
Added extra on damaged cells.
Found a few more mistakes and required details... edited.
Added a line for Xrecovery users. <<< removed this.. it's crap.
Thank you xcxa23 for showing me where the battery stats file is.
LET me MAKE this 100% CLEAR... wiping stats = nothing
This guide cycle's your battery, by correctly setting the upper and lower parameters of the cell.

Nope.. it does not matter.
This is not a hack or a trick.
It's simple li-ion battery science.
If it still has problems then your battery is already optimized and your problem is completely different.
This 7% in heavy usage or light usage or standby?

it's because u wiped battery stats on the low battery charge and didn't make a battery calibration. I had the same problem until the calibrating using another method (for me is easier, but this topic shows another way, which can probable be very effective )
Thx OP, although it was stated in another thread like noticed
Someone on XDA also done an Android app, Battery Calibration, easying the process of battery calibration/wiping.
I don't use it for calibration, just to get battery health in mV (even if you can grab it from Android System Info, Android Assistant, etc).
Still using the good ol' method of xrecovery
Hi guys i know there are lots of similar posts about battery life etc but cant find the answer im looking for after a search of this forum as all answers seem to be on rooted devices, she does not want her x8 rooted and im really getting it in the neck for upgrading her in the first place lol.
My girlfriend recently got the 2.1-update 1 via pc companion and thats when the battery problems started. The battery drain problem has actually been getting progressively worse since this. This morning (after yet another full night charging 100%) after 30 mins of getting up today the battery was down to 83 %. I have already uninstalled maps updates, not that she ever used it anyway.
So my question is : is there a solution to this without rooting and/or having a custom ROM? becuase she making my life a misery lol.
Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the similar post

Well, 1st thing as Dx said. reboot after using wifi, 3g, music. reboot to make everything fresh.. but there's no other way to save battery without rooting I think. because I helped my gf installed a custom ROM for her and she said that the battery life changed, and it's way different than a original ROM. How come she doesn't wanna go custom? Sorry for my bad english.

Nah, rooting makes the difference. IMO Froyo ROMs have good battery life.
Well i think she might well have to go custom because the battery life is a joke now, nearly rendering her device unusable, think she just frightened cos i did her pc companion update and kinda blames me for the crap battery now, il have a read around the x8 forum on how to root.

Just try to keep off all things you don't need: Wifi, Bluetooth, Synchronization, 3G. also unninstall apps you don't need and do not use app killers to save RAM.

My friend, less RAM is actually a good thing. I've read through the web. just don't auto kill ALL the apps, kill those apps that when it doesn't look right or freezes. The more RAM you freed, the more battery it will drain. Serious.

Hope this helps!
I'm just a noob trying to help.
use a task killer and disable all what you don't need like bluetooth, data traffic, gps and wifi. yes i know my english is bad^^
disable wifi, gps, bluetooth and data traffic. stock 2.1update rom should get you about 3 days with those disabled. any apps that need them will ask you to switch them on again anyway. It's a little annoying to get used to at first especially when you're used to a fone that lasts a week without charge so I can understand how she feels especially if she only wants to text and do a few calls.
If you don't use wifi, 3g gps and rest of the s**t you should probbably buy a dumy phone.
With some "normal" usage you can be happy if it lasts for a day/day and a half.
2-3 is really success.
You do get a charger in the box with the phone you know?
Use your phone, stop wasting time on battery monitoring.

yeah but the idea is it's a MOBILE fone.. You dont want it plugged into the damn socket all the time!
If you need to use the GPS, WIFI etc. the app will ask you to switch it on so wheres the harm in turning it all off until it's required if it saves having to plug the thing in every day?!?
Nobody stated you should keep all the functions on.
But it should be understandable that, with some "normal" use, and by normal I mean regular texting, phonecalls, check facebook/twitter, refresh weather app, read mail and some news maybe you can't expect your battery to last 7 days like on dummy nokia.
Besides, you all forget that your biggest battery killer is the screen.
And another thing I noticed; when LED starts to glow green, your battery isn't fully charged. Check phone status. It becomes green after passing 90% I think, or so.
And the second thing I noticed is a HUGE differenc when charging the phone while it's on, for a hour and a half when the battery metter reaches 100% and when I turn it off and leave it charging over night.
The "night" option proved to be a lot better (battery lasts longer, doesn't fall so fast) + Every once in a while it is good to fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it.

Yeah, but that mobile phones have long since ceased to be just phones.
Switch off everything you can : wifi, brighteness, gps etc. Also you can make a profile "screen off " in setcpu and set it to 122mhz . it will save you a lot of battery! It drains just 1% after 5 hours ( but i didnt use my phone) . Hope it help.
Oh yeah and use the app called " fast reboot " it is so good is well and it speed up our lovely x8
When i used these things , my phone lasts in a week or more of.course i nearly didnt use my phone.

Seeing as I don't have enough posts to post over in the development forum, I thought I'd hijack this thread.
I installed this rom last week and at first, the batter was brilliant. It lasted for three days but now I have to charge it twice a day. I have bluetooth off, wifi off more often than not, brightness down very low.
The phone was 5hrs on battery and was down to 44%.
Cell Standby: 35%
Display: 20%
Phone Idle: 19%
Launcher Pro: 13%
Anyone have any ideas?
I also experienced the same problem ... especially with the overclocked conditions
Hello,
I just tested what i will explain to you and i wanna share with you guys.
For me it works and i really feel an improvement with my battery life ( ~4 or 5 hours + ) and i think it is ok.
Now...what i've did...
1. Power on your DHD and let him to charge 8 / 10 hours
2. Unplug cable charger and power off your device. After that, when device is off, plug again charger and let it 1 hour for offline charging.
3. Unplug again cable charger, power on phone, wait till OS loading and start up, and immediately power off again.
4. Let the phone to charge again for 1 hour ( phone is power off )
5. Power on and let me know if you will see any improvement
IF AFTER THAT PROCESS YOU WILL FLASH ANOTHER ROM, ALL THAT STEPS MUST BE REPEATED.
.....and sorry guys for my f... bad english

I think it was not necessary to tell me that...Anyway sorry if my thread disturbed u so much.
I wrote that cause maybe someone will need 4-5 hours. If you will be like me ( going all over the places in Europe for meeting or doing business, it will count that poor 4-5 hours when will really need to send an e-mail and don't have a charger in your car for the moment...
I've found that all you really need to do is charge until currentwidget displays 0 ma draw, and restart once to let the phone top off the battery from the amount drained after the charge stops.

that was only the first part....here comes the second:
6. Turn off your phone.
7. Charge the phone until the next full moon.
8. Run around naked until the cops catch you.
After that you will never need to worry about your phone's battery life again because you will be locked up and won't need a phone.
But seriously:
Whoever actually considers doing this is a complete moron.
Its called bump charging was discussed 500 times already and is potentionally DAMAGING for your battery in the long run.

If you have an issue have a word with yourself not the thread maker.. if you think its pointless jog on. Some people will try this as people work etc and need there phones. Not for me either but he's entitled to post it if he thinks it works.

Whadda buncha ...! Are you really that sad of your life? Go tell that to a psychologist not us!
Thanks bogdy87, I love your thread! I could use an extra 4-5 hours as my battery only lasts for 4-8 hours!
thank you for your advise,i will try it by myself
Doing this will get you more use per charge, but 6 months of this and your battery will be shot. Charge limiters are put in place for a reason, lithium ion breaks down at too high of a charge. Your battery your choice, I get great life on mine and I just plug it in at night. Bump charging is short sighted. Personally I think this misleading thread should just be taken down before we get flooded with users that have ruined their battery or the voltage regulator on the board by doing this. What it essentially is doing is pushing a little more current into the battery before it completes its battery voltage checks.

Adaptive battery stats ROM
Some ROMS (Revolution) use an adaptive battery stats procedure which cuts out the need to go through the drain charge process. Just use the phone and it'll take care of itself. Battery drain is much more to do with use and processes than the battery stats file.
For those who have bad battery life first charge your phone fully while on then turn phone off...plug the phone back into charger while it's off it will be a red light charge until green sometimes it takes another 20 mins .When done turn phone on and plug charger in again it will drop to 99% when 100 plug out now u have a fully calibrated battery..I am on the new firmware btw

Actually it's not b.s I noticed that around 80% my phone would drop down quickly to 70% and 30% would drop 3% instead of 1 so I did this method knowing that my battery was not fully charged.since I have done this no more quick drops...instead of saying b.s why not try it first then come to a conclusion smh
HTC ONE rooted,S-Off,SuperCid
I can vouch for this ...I am only trying to help those who gave bad battery drain...we do flash a lot on xda sometimes **** happens
HTC ONE rooted,S-Off,SuperCid
Instead of clowing u guys should try it..listen phone says fully charged for some but in reality it is not it will rapidly drop for example 90% but drops to 79% rapidly or drops 3% for no reason while screen is on is due to battery not fully calibrated/charged ..This happens from flashing roms sometimes this happens if you have battery issues try this method ..
HTC ONE rooted,S-Off,SuperCid
I used this method a couple of years ago on my DHD. It made a huge difference! i forgot all about this. I'll do it again later.
Thanks, I had a feeling the calibration was a little off since the phone shuts down at around 5%, let's see what happens.
Yeah, I do this on my galaxy note and sometinmes on my new one.
When 100,% through normal charging turn phone off and begin charge again. It will charge just that bit further.
One thing the note does better is thaat when off and charging you get a battery indicator on screen, not so with the one.

I'm pretty sure the only way to get a full battery charge is to hold the phone upside down in your right hand, put your left hand on the back, and spin in 3 circles, counter clockwise. You must then quickly plug the charger (within 1 second), and spin the phone around the cable 3 times, in a clockwise direction this time. Only then can you ever hope to have a fully charged battery.
I can vouch for this. :good:

Man that's total bull...... only 2 circles required
To be real for a minute if I may..... if you monitor the current draw by the phone when charging you will see that when the green led lights the phone is still pulling 60-70mA from the charger so it's still charging and can take a while longer for that draw to fall to 0mA. At this point it's fully charged.
Charging it as the OP suggests does actually allow this extra top up.
I actually think this does help with proper calibration a bit. Not sure why people are acting like children here.

The topic of batteries makes people go crazy for some reason. I will toss in my own 2 cents, the thread title talks about improving battery "life". In this case we seem to be talking about "battery life per charge cycle" and people should just be aware seeking improvement in this area usually comes at the expense of a different kind of battery life, ie "battery life per phone".
I personally am one of those who is a little irritated by the non-replaceable battery on the One because I intend to keep the phone for many years. This applies to almost nobody else I realize, but for me this thread is a helpful summary of the exact steps I need to *avoid* if I want to get the longest lifetime (measured in years, not minutes) out of the battery.

What's wrong with turning the phone off every once in a while and letting it charge up fully?

I only needed to do it once...for regular charging I recommend charging while off then plug it out turn on and charge will drop to 99% when plugged in charge until light is green..or you can charge normal after this point your battery stats should be good

actually i'm totally cool with doing this procedure every once in a while as a way to just what it says, get a few extra minutes of battery life. hell, if very precise runtime estimates are important to you and this helps calibrate that, great. i'm all for that too. i actually *have* tried something like this and my phone didnt die and i'm sure i got a little extra run time that day.
i just wouldn't do it *every* day.
one of the findings in another thread around here (something about battery "health") was the battery ages quicker at higher voltages such as those used towards the end of the charging cycle. if you are willing to constrain yourself to charging the phone to *less* than 80% capacity (ie the opposite of what this thread is about) you will double the useful life of the actual LiOn (or LiPolymer or whatever) material in the phone.
that is all. not trying to discourage anyone from *ever* doing this procedure, just explaining why i actually strive to do the opposite most of the time.
carry on.
Known fact... it is impractical to FULLY charge up a battery while is is in use (hence, being drained). Plain and simple physics at work here and I can vouch for this based on the many years I worked in the Navy charging, repairing, replacing, and rebuilding naval vessel batteries. Granted these are not huge deep cycle batteries but the charging principles are the same.
As as matter of fact, just did the method the OP was kind enough to suggest to us and it worked like a charm. Noticed a higher mv reading on my battery! Not much but I will take it. Who would have figured on that...
+Thanks to OP for bringing this up.
EDIT: For the record, I would normally reach 4310-4313mV... after this I am reaching +4335mV - Not much but I'll take it.

As fun as it is to mock, this most likely does work. HTC seem to be pretty bad at making battery algorithms, never found myself having to do this on the galaxy nexus or nexus 4. But my battery drops to 85 darn fast now and I'm pretty sure this will help. I remember this was helpful on the desire and desire HD too.
