Hello,
I am trying to fix my friends MyTouch 4G. The phone was in a pretty terrible state when he got it. The power button was not working, but I have opened the phone up and found a way of making it work.
Another problem, which I can't seem to work around is that the phone is stuck in "bootloop" (i think thats what it's called). Basically when I plug the charger in, an orange light blinks on top left of the phone and the "mytouch 4g screen" comes up. But then it goes away again and the phone restarts. It keeps doing that.
I can get the phone into the (hboot?) screen which gives me the options of fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock, and image crc. I have tried recovery and factory reset, both don't work. I have searched around a lot but to no avail.
Here is more information on the "hboot" screen, if it's needed:

There is a thread below with stock image. You can download one, put it on sdcard and try to install it.
Are you using Froyo or Gingerbread?

why can't you get into hboot?
What thread should I look at? Also, are you referring to the file: PD15IMG.zip? I did put it on the MicroSD card, but I don't know where to go from there.
Yes, I can get to hboot, but I dont know where to go from there.

If you have the .zip on your sd card when you boot into hboot it should read it automatically, asking permission first.

Nope, not working. I have the file on my MicroSD card, but when I get to the hboot screen it just gives me the same options as I mentioned above. Isn't asking for any permissions.
Maybe I have the wrong file, in which case can anyone redirect me to the right one?

I have read both these posts before. According to them, I need to put the .zip file into the root of the SDcard, which I can't access since the phone won't boot up. I have even tried putting the file into MicroSD card, but still nothing.

If you have an SD reader copy it while on PC to the root of the SD card. If not and you have another Android phone put the SD card in it and copy the file to the root of the SD card. If need the file download it with another Android phone with that SD card inserted, then copy it to root of the SD card.

The root of the SD card is the internal memory right? Well if it is, I can't access that without turning on the phone, or without mounting it to the PC, which I can't because the phone is stuck in boot-loop.
I have already put the file in the external MicroSD card, however it doesn't seem to work like that. How can I access the internal storage to put the .zip file there when I can't start the phone?
If your PC has a card reader insert the micro SD card in an adapter, plug it into your PC download the pd15img.zip to your PC, then copy it to your SD card root directory.
Then boot into bootloader and your phone will recognize it and ask to upgrade. The root of your card is placing the file in no folder.

When we say root of sdcard we mean the black memory card you can remove. Its not the internal memory.
So download the pd15img.zip from your PC, boot into hboot and connect the device into the computer. It should read your sdcard. Move the pd15img.zip to your sdcard. Disconnect your device from pc, turn off you device, remove the battery and reinstall. Boot into hboot and it should automatically read the pd15img.zip.
If when you connect your device to the PC while in boot and it doesn't read your sdcard, then you will have to do the method posted above which is using a card reader and moving the pd15img.zip to your sdcard that way.
After the image is on your sdcard, boot into hboot and click fastboot. Then allow the update.

You do not hit fastboot. Once booting into hboot it automatically finds the file without you doing anything.
Are you sure you are in bootloader and not in hboot? And is it reading pd15img or is it just skipper ng over it?
Okay, so this is what I have tried to far: I have transferred the PD15IMG.zip file to the removable MicroSD card through my PC, put the card in the phone, and start up hboot. This didn't work, the hboot still looks the same as I described in the beginning, there are no new options or anything.
I downloaded the aforementioned .zip file from Cyanogenmod:
HTML:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide
Maybe I have downloaded the wrong file, in which case can someone redirect me to the right file please? Also, I am being told that I have to transfer the .zip file to the root of my SD card which is the internal memory, but I can't access that bit because my phone will not go past the "MyTouch 4G" screen.
If there is a way to access the root folder in any way other than through the phone, or plugging the phone into the PC (which I can't do because the computer won't read the phone because the phone won't turn on), can please someone walk me though the means of doing that?
Root of SdCard = the microSD card that u can remove you place it in there not within a folder...
Internal Memory = the phones memory unless you know what ur doing don't mess with those files...

The black screen with lit up touch buttons is just the vibrants way of bootlooping. The problem with using clockwork to partition the SD card is /sdcard is the internal memory. /sdcard/sd is the card itself. Clockwork is actually formatting the internal memory. Might want remove the external sd and partition it back to 1 fat32 drive and see if that will help.

I can get into recovery but the recovery doesn't access anything besides the internal memory. I can't access the internal memory if if i can't use usb... it doesn't access SD card so placing a file on the card wouldn't help me.
Clockwork does not even access the external sd. You partitioned your internal. You might be able to repartition it from adb if you connect after loading clockwork recovery.

Not that this is a real fix, but try going to T-mo and telling them you have no idea what happened and that it just won't turn on. With any luck you'll get a nice sales rep and they'll give you a new phone.

If you have the USB drivers installed, You can use ADB to push files to the sdcard, although it won't be incredibly fast to push an entire nandroid backup over (you may need to mount /sdcard/ and push.

First you need to install ADB. You can find the instructions in the top sticky post on the forum. Once it's installed, download http://www.mediafire.com/?kqaulorzx5f6dyq and unzip it into a folder in your adb folder. (ex: c:\androidtools\tools\) Keep track of the file names in the zip file. Open a command prompt in your adb directory and type "adb devices" to make sure your device is connected. I'm on my phone so I don't have my adb cheat sheet but I think you will type "adb mount /sdcard". Then you will want to push each file to the sdcard. You may be able to do the folder at once but I don't remember. That will be something link "adb push whateverfilename".
These are obviously not the best or most detailed instructions but I'm on my phone... You can read the adb tutorial to find what you are supposed to type exactly. You should be able to figure it out from here.
So had some issues getting CM7 on, but after a bit of work got it.
But just for the heck of it i wanted to go back to stock. I downloaded serveral versions of PD15IMG.zip all same file size and MD5 values.
When giong to the hboot screen it comes up with some errors saying PD15daig.zip not found and PD15daig.*** (cant remember all the ext)
I am directly placing the PD15IMG.zip on the SD card in the root. I am not sure at all why is not loading, from what i understand i should get a loading bar in the top right of the screen and then after a moment it should promt me to flash?

Incorrect. You definitely can go back to stock after gfree using PD15IMG.zip (I did), but you will retain S-OFF.
Also just to be sure, the file name is PD15IMG.zip, not PD151IMG.zip. The number in the middle is 15, not 151.
In addition to the .zip.zip issue, I will also point out that some microSD cards simply aren't recognized by the MT4G bootloader. My class 2 16 GB microSD never works for PD15IMG, but the class 4 8 GB that came with the Panache does work every time.
When hboot checks the sdcard for updates it will give you a choice either yes or no. Volume up is yes click for updating. How long should a Mytouch 4g take to update the radio with PD15IMG.zip? does it say Fail-PU?
I recently had a goofy issue like this. I was putting the PD15IMG file on the SD card using the ADB Push command.
That was my problem. (I have no idea why). But ADB was only pushing like 99.99% of the file. It was exactly 53 bytes short every single time.
I put the file on the SD card using the drag and drop method from my computer's file manager. The entire file went and it worked like a charm.
If the bootloader isn't flashing the PD15IMG file it's because it sees something wrong with it. Try another method to get the file onto the SD card and see if you get a better result.
3 Steps to Prepare a PD15IMG.zip so that HBOOT will recognize it
BACKUP MICRO SD CARD CONTENTS BEFORE YOU PROCEED!!
1. Format Micro SD card to FAT32 (Sometimes larger micro sd cards won't be recognized by hboot, so try using 4GB and below)
2. Make sure you rename it to PD15IMG.zip and not PD15IMG.zip.zip (Very common mistake with windows users because hidden known file extensions are enabled.
3. Double check md5sum or check the file properties to make sure the size of the file remains unchanged when its on your computer and when its copied over to the micro sd card.

At that time no fail-pu were showing, as of this morning I get a fail-pu for the bootloader only. Also in ADB I found that it could not read mmcblk i.e. unable to read MBR
I had the same issue, it is resolved now. What I did, backup my sdcard data to pc. Format(partition) sdcard using CWM recovery(you can use ubuntu too). Put back everything to sdcard. Now hboot is able to load PD15IMG.zip file. I am using 8GB class 4 sdcard. Hope will work for you too.

After it does its thing, press the trackball again to reboot. Make sure you have at least 50% battery and that you don't turn the phone off while its updating.

Hi, I followed all the steps here but when I run RUU it says it cannot connect to my device. I have HTC sync installed. I'm not sure why it's not working.
Are you using the HTC cord that came with the phone? Some after market cords will keep your device from connecting. You could also try uninstalling HTC sync but not the drivers.
I've never had much luck running the RUU exe either.. If you can't get it to work I would use the PG06IMG.zip. Just put it on the root of your sd and boot into Hboot, it will run the RUU from there. Just a heads ups though, your SDcard may need to be formatted to fat32 in order for Hboot to see the zip.
Yeah, I'm using the cord that came with the phone, about doing the Hboot method... How do I go about doing that? I put the zip file on the root of my SD card, what's the next step? Just put the zip on the root of your sd, power off your phone then boot into bootloader (Hold power and volume down at the same time). The bootloader will basically instruct you from there.
Couple of tips.. SdCard MAY need to formatted to fat32, google how to format it's pretty easy. This will erase everything on your sd, so make a backup.
Make sure you have fastboot disabled. Menu > Settings > Power > uncheck fastboot
looks like I have to format it, it found no image. Yay.. lol
edit: okay formatted currently moving all files back onto the card and will try Hboot again.
edit2: Worked like a charm thanks so much!
I'm not really a newbie to android, but this G1 is my first HTC phone. I just bought it on eBay for basically nothing. It has no SIM card, and I do not own one. It is running RC30, and to downgrade I have placed the US RC29 on a microSD, in the root, with no other files present on the card. When I put it in the G1 and boot it into bootloader, the gray screen says "No image found." and then it goes back to tricolor and a gray band appears saying "Serial0"
EDIT: I didn't format the SD to FAT32, but now it still won't recognize the file. It goes through the install (the progress bar is full) but then it says UPDATE TERMINATE UPDATE FAIL. And it won't boot to anything but tricolor
PLEASE HELP ME, THIS THREAD HAS HAD NO OTHER REPLIES!!!
Seriously? I've had a bricked phone for over a month, and this thread still has no replies...

Then your SD is formatted to fat32 or you didn't name the dreaimg.nbh file right, or you didn't put it on root of SD card. Also possible that SD reader is bad and you would then need to replace daughterboard. Really there are lots of reasons why this may not work so you'll need to explain more what you've tried

Thank you so much for your reply. It is very much appreciated. I have reformatted the card to FAT32, and the package is named correctly. The device recognizes the file, goes through the install (the progress bar is full) and then says
Code:
UPDATE TERMINATE
UPDATE FAIL
Sometimes the progress bar doesn't make it all the way and it interrupts to the error again. I have tried MANY different dreaimg.nbh files, to no avail. I cannot boot to recovery. I cannot boot to system. I have tried making the file DREAIMG.NBH, dreaimg.nbh, DREAIMG.nbh, and dreaimg.NBH. None work. Also, I am 100% sure the file is in the root of the SD card. Thanks again for the reply!
So you can still boot into current os but it fails to downgrade? You may need to make a gold card, also try rc7 instead of rc29

No. I can't boot to system OR downgrade. I'll try RC7, that's a good idea. The problem now is finding my microSD! XD
I'm gonna need to do that before I make a goldcard
EDIT: As soon as I sat up from my computer, I found my microSD. Must be the luck of the Irish! Could you send me to a guide on how to make a gold card? Is there a way I can revive my G1 from a computer, as I have a working installation of linux and a mini USB cable.
To revive it from a computer you would need to JTAG it. Not super easy and you'll need more than a USB cable
Just Google search gold card g1, you should find lots of hits, I think the unlocker even has a video. Not near a computer so I can't send you a link easy
