partitioned sd and now phone wont reboot! - Vibrant General

hi i think i made a crazy mistake... i just rooted my phone..used rom manager, flashed clockwork recovery.. went back into rom manager and did a backup for the stock shipped tmobile software... i decided to partition my sd card not even thinking that all my backup info would be on my SD card... i thought it would go to the internal memory... so now when the phone comes on, the bottom soft keys light up but the phone doesnt come on. please let me know if corrupted my phone or is there a way to fix?
please get back to me. this is scary

The black screen with lit up touch buttons is just the vibrants way of bootlooping. The problem with using clockwork to partition the SD card is /sdcard is the internal memory. /sdcard/sd is the card itself. Clockwork is actually formatting the internal memory. Might want remove the external sd and partition it back to 1 fat32 drive and see if that will help.

partitioning it back to fat32 didn't work. still just lit bottons and black screen after it has booted up. I think i erased eveything when i partitioned the sd card. i wonder has anyone else ran into this.

Just download jac's nandroid and put on sd card assuming you can still get into recovery..

I can get into recovery but the recovery doesn't access anything besides the internal memory. I can't access the internal memory if if i can't use usb... it doesn't access SD card so placing a file on the card wouldn't help me.

Clockwork does not even access the external sd. You partitioned your internal. You might be able to repartition it from adb if you connect after loading clockwork recovery.

nah.. i did chose clock work recovery, partition sd card 564 swap and 30mb i think... i am not sure.. but it did that... i tried to be reboot, it goes by the tmobile logo, then makes the tmobile noise as its on the samsung S part and then it goes to a black screen and lit up soft keys....
im guess stuck. i guess i can confirm this as bricked. ugh
i dont even know how to use adb.. it's difficult

Go into recovery and then use adb to connect and repartition.

Not that this is a real fix, but try going to T-mo and telling them you have no idea what happened and that it just won't turn on. With any luck you'll get a nice sales rep and they'll give you a new phone.

because:
the only access i have is booting into recovery. I can't access the sd card to update it.. there is nothing on the phone. how does partitioning your sd card wipe both the phone and the sd? i backed up the rom via clockwork/rom manager so maybe it was all stored on the sd card and when i went to wipe, it wiped everything.

yeah i have to probably return the phone. i did download stock shipping software just to try it out maybe

If you have the USB drivers installed, You can use ADB to push files to the sdcard, although it won't be incredibly fast to push an entire nandroid backup over (you may need to mount /sdcard/ and push.

First you need to install ADB. You can find the instructions in the top sticky post on the forum. Once it's installed, download http://www.mediafire.com/?kqaulorzx5f6dyq and unzip it into a folder in your adb folder. (ex: c:\androidtools\tools\) Keep track of the file names in the zip file. Open a command prompt in your adb directory and type "adb devices" to make sure your device is connected. I'm on my phone so I don't have my adb cheat sheet but I think you will type "adb mount /sdcard". Then you will want to push each file to the sdcard. You may be able to do the folder at once but I don't remember. That will be something link "adb push whateverfilename".
These are obviously not the best or most detailed instructions but I'm on my phone... You can read the adb tutorial to find what you are supposed to type exactly. You should be able to figure it out from here.

Error reading /sdcard/ *Guru assistance needed!*

I used the root method at unlockr.com, and i have #root# access in the terminal emu app. When i get to the part at unlockr about flashing recovery, (thru terminal emulator) i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso
I have RUU'd the phone at least 5 times... I have also tried using the cmd using the guide here, and get an error at basically the same spot.
my hero is 1.56.651.2. i have spent over 15 hours across 2 days searching forums and trying different methods, but i guess i must be doing something wrong.
btw.. the very first time i tried using the method from unlockr (root through cmd, flash recovery through terminal emu) it *almost* worked. It tried and got a ton of messages and an error regarding too little memory. after i looked it up and realized i could have just freed up memory in the PHONE(not sdcard) it was too late, i had already RUU'd again. It hasnt come close to flashing since, only the error reading message.
i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso

this isn't your issue is it?

do a RUU to go back to bone stock, same version you have
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=608434
follow this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
EDIT: and when it get to this part about "flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img" give it an extra min after you hit enter and it "looks" like it's done before proceeding
let me know if you get stuck, i'll keep an eye on this thread also let me know at exactly which step "looks weird"
oops that was just a typo. I have been using .img for the file ext like you are supposed to. I have formatted the sd before trying, and the same error. The guide you pointed me to also did not work, I always get a flash error at (step 18). I have RUU'd at least 5 times to start over, and it didnt help any.
and about giving it an extra minute after the flash command, it instantly tells me
"error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img"
so i cant really do that.
What should i do
I have ran into that same issue. I would guess you have upgraded the stock sd card. If you have, it is formated to fat32 not fat like the original. Try formating the card fat then try again. Good luck to you.
Dave
EDIT: I see you have formated the card. I believe the card has to be fat not fat 32 (someone correct me if im wrong). When I was rooting my phone I had same error til I formated it fat. May the force be with you.
What do you mean by upgraded the sd card? I didnt ever do that...at least not on purpose. So how would i check the format?
Put the card into a card reader in a pc, right click on drive and hit properties.
crap, i dont have a reader for this type of card. no way to do it through the phone?
and this problem couldnt be from anything else, could it?

you can mount the card from the notifications bar when you plug your phone in usb. then just right click on the removable disk in my computer (mine's drive H: ) then click "properties"
it will bring up this window
if it says FAT32 then there's the (assumed) problem.
Okay!
it IS fat32.

before you format be sure to save anything you have on your sd card that you want/need as it will erase everything.
1. move anything you like to save to your computer from your sd card
2. right click on the removable disk in my computer
3. click on "format"
4. in the little window that pops up chose "FAT" leave everything else alone
5. click start.
6. thats it!
damn its not working.
As soon as i click format it unmounts...any idea?
BTW thanks for the help

i've never tried it that way, but you will probably have to go the card reader option, or use...
GParted
windows disk management
but those tools give you the power to seriously mess up your computer. so i recommend running these on someone's computer you don't like.
or the card reader option
You can format the card under "SDCard and Phone storage"
Just unmount then format.
Okay well modchipper said he had the same problem, and the sd has to be formatted to FAT,not Fat32.
Gparted and the other tool, how can they mess up my computer?
The format option in the phone formats to FAT32...
If you're not careful you can accidentally nuke your hard drive, instead of your sdcard.
Well i tried windows disk management and it didnt see the drive. Gives me a feeling that gparted wont work either. does anyone know for fact that sdcard format has to be FAT?
Well once again I'm at my mom's, and her USB ports are screwed up, so I couldn't tel you what mine is formatted as.
Well i have multiple SDCards, but the one that is currently in my phone is formatted in FAT32 & I believe that was the one I used to root & flash the recovery originally...
Well this just seems impossible it seems ive hit a wall...
Im trying to use Fresh pre kitchen, but that wont work either because i have windows 7.
The Fresh Pre-kitchen works fine on Win7.

Can't mount USB

It's the second time this has happened. I'm not sure what I did the first time to fix it.
Basically, when I try to mount my SD card via USB it tries to - but then fails and goes back to "preparing SD card" on the phone. It never shows up on the PC.
I'm running Gumbo 1.5C with kernel.
I tried going back to my RUU image/formated SD and start over but the problem still persists. The card is partitioned for Apps2SD. If I need to format the card can someone provide instruction to either move whatever is installed on the SD card back to the phone or how to back up the SD card so I wont have to clean everything up again.
Would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

I can try another one when I get home but the problem is I wont have any of the apps that were installed on the SD card.
What I did just try is "unmount" the SD card on the phone so it looks like I'm about to remove it - then restart. It's still not working. I kind of want to say that the problem arose when I pulled my phone off the USB cable while the card was already mounted - to answer an important phone call. I'm just not sure how to replicate or undo the problem.

This will kill it every time.
The best thing to do is go into recovery make a back up of the EXT partition - theres an option for it some where. Mount the card in recovery copy the backup to the desktop. Power the phone off swap the SD card. Partition it with the EXT partion. Mount the new card as USB in recovery copy the back up to it (make sure you keep the original folder path exactly the same). Restore the EXT back up. *catches breath*
Maybe this will work for you. I had a very simliar issue destroy my 16gb. It was sadening those things aren't cheap.

I may give this a shot later, I just want to wait to see if anyone else has a solution. The reason being; this has happened to me before. About 2 months ago. I think I fixed it by changing to a different ROM... which is not what I want to do now. I like the speed I had now. There must be some haywire code that gets corrupted if I dismount improperly considering the SD card is still fully functional.

Beware lag update and clockwork format

I'm really peaved. I was trying to format my SD card using my Linux box and it was giving me problems. I had it backed up. I gave up and used the Clockwork menu item to format the SD card. Be-FRREAKIN-ware! It wiped the internal memory instead of the SD card. Now I'm enduring my brain dead windoze laptop to restore it to stock... after all that work. I'm not impressed.
Dude, this happened to a lot of others who already tried to partition with rom manager.
Feeling so vibrant...
Yep. This information/situation is fairly well known. Clockwork does not have access to the external sd card.
it is all over every post for roms, etc.
don't partition with rom manager.
do a torrent serch for hirens boot disk. then boot from cd and use acronis disk manager. don't forget to put the memory stick in a card reader first. that's how I did it.

I don't get why people say that. It most certainly does. It's at /dev/block/mmcblk1 .... Or is that because I have the JAC kernel? I think I used it before I installed that kernel... I even wrote an auto-partition ZIP file you can flash via clockwork and it will partition and format your SD card for you. Worked fine. Check in the dev forum if you want to find my stuff.
it's not in the same place as it was on the old phones, but that doesn't mean it's not there at all.... ROM Manager's options just don't work with the new location, but you can do it with a little looking.

I'm using a recently nightly build of CM7.
I really love how I have it set-up, but if I don't have anyway to ever back it up my results are effortless.
How can I fix this situation without removal of the system. anyone, please?
First of all, have you done a nandroid backup in CWM? If so you can definitely recover.
Second it looks like your boot file is corrupted, always sending you to recover rather than a normal boot. What boot setup are you using?

You have installed your ROM to SD. There is no CWM recovery on SD installs. You cannot do a nandroid backup with the SD recovery.
See my post here for an explanation of the difference between emmc installs and SD installs:

However, there is a way to back it up. Keep reading further down in my post.

Hmm.. somehow I got it doing that. I of course tried that before and only the two partitions were loading. This time I was messing with it and clicking the multi sd mount widget and somehow the boot drive came up and I transferred the files on there.
So now I can do a nandroid backup as usual? Or sense it's an (Alt) instead of a recovery thing must it be different?
I'll try some things in the mean time..
Okay, so I have to boot into recovery and choose alternative and do it manually.
Can't do it with Rom Manager/Rom Tool Kit. Tried and it did the same error as in the OP.
Off to try now.
This is really strange though.
I've been messing with Nooks for a while and always used rom manager and the recovery console just fine.. but i've always ever done dual sd boots. This is my first time really doing a single one.
I'm in the boot menu (encore u-boot menu by j4mm3r), 1.2 port + extras.
It's been at
'Booting. One Moment'..." for at least a minute. Assuming it's frozen itself..
edit: Yeah, the Alt files didn't work.. I reset and pressed the N button, went to alternate and SD card. Nothing.
Reset it and it works as usual, but still no ability to backup..

Do not use ROM Manager with the verygreen SD installation. It does not work. Use the boot menu to boot into the alternate. Hold the n key while booting. Choose sd, alt.
Edit: you said two partitions showed up. Did you physically take the card out and insert into a card reader in your PC? It should see just one drive. Make sure those two files are there or it will hang when you choose it in the boot menu. I suspect you put the files on emmc boot since you used that strange program to do it.

No,
it's something with the multi mount sd app widget.
I hook mini usb to usb.
then hit the widget.
and JUST the boot partition comes up.
It says something about disk F: is not formatted correctly as well.
Just plugging it in without the multi mount app the outward sd card partition and the nook color come up, just those two.
And can't believe I didn't think to take the mini SD out and use an adapter. I'll try it again with that.
You're right I did mess something up with my EMMC.
Before I had it on a stock nook.
Now it goes to the cyanomod thing.
I took the miniSD card out, plugged it in for power and it turned on.
Went to that, had a bunch of force closed issues nothing worked, dry and empty, etc.
Any suggestions?
I'm gonna check out the miniSD card partitions now and try to get something going with that.

There are many threads here that will tell you how to restore stock to emmc. Search for them.
But to get the SD working, do what I said. And I would suggest getting rid of that mount program so you don't mess it up again.
Edit: The problem with those mount programs is, if you mount the wrong partition, windows can only read fat partitions and will ask you to format. System and data are ext4 which windows cannot read.

Thanks a bunch.
In ubuntu once the sd card is inserted all 4 partititions automatically came up so I was able to copy and paste the Alt images.
Am backing up right now
And yeah getting the emmc back to stop np.
One thing i'm confused about.. you're saying one cannot update rom's if booting from an SD card?
also, i assume all in eed to do to make a back-up on my hard drive or usb (so its not just inclusive to the minisd), i can just root browser into mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and and create a zip of the 2012.5.5.etc.etc.etc. made folder and trnasfer it onto external device? If needed all I would need to do is a transfer back?

Yes you can update the ROM. Just not with CWM. You place the update-...zip in the boot partition of the SD and then using the boot menu (hold n during boot) select SD and recovery. The script in the boot partition will install the ROM for you. You need to read the first post in the agnostic image thread. It tells you all this.
On the second question, you can do it that way, but the files are already compressed there so just copy the folder to your PC to archive them.
is it okay to just boot into alternative (power + vol up/down) instead of going through the manual booting with the 'N' on start-up?

Why is everything force closing?

Just bought the parents some nook colors and I've been trying to rom it up with no luck...
The nook came with 1.3.0
These are the steps i took:
I used Win32DiskImager to write the 1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer.zip image to the boot SD and booted into CWM.
I removed the SD card and formatted it. Then added the rom zip and gapps zip to the sdcard.
I then reset to factory settings, then installed the rom and the gapps, then i reset factory again.
Then i would remove the sdcard and reboot and the rom would start to load...
I tried 3 different roms, cm7 mirage, phiremod and an ics rom... all 3 do the same thing, extremely slow and practically everything force closes... I cant even reboot to recovery, it seems like it stayed on the sdcard and didnt install to the nook...
Noob questions:
Should I have rooted it first?
Does it have to have an sdcard?
What can I do?
Thanks a million in advance!
I don't think this for the "Android Development" subforum.
Anyways.. unless you have a Sandisk Class 4 MicroSD, or cards with similar performance characteristics, you will see stuff like that if you run from SD card because the card is just too damn slow for small writes.
Look for "4k random write" benchmarks. Get a card that scores high on that. It's important for approximately everything that's not a large video.
You can benchmark yourself under Windows with CrystalDiskMark for example.

dammit, you're right - i could've swore i was in the Q&A forum... can a mod please move this thread?
also, regarding the sdcard quality, I actually want it installed on the nook itself, i dont want to have to depend on an sdcard...
You don't need to root first. You also shouldn't be booting to CWM after burning the image or reformatting afterwards. Your description is vague so it sounds like you may be trying to make a bootable SD card instead of installing the ROM internally. Certainly the crashing issues sounds like a slow SD card running a bootable ROM.
To install internally start with a freshly formatted card. Burn the 3.2.01 CWM image to the card. Then copy and paste the ROM zip (CM7, CM9, MIUI or whatever) and the Google apps zip files on the card. Do not unzip the files and do not put them in any folder.
Safely eject the card from the pc, insert it into the Nook and power up. Wipe data/system, clear the cache partition, go to advanced and wipe the dalvik cache. This ensures you are totally clean for the ROM.
Next choose install zip from SD card. Then flash the ROM zip. Choose install zip from SD card again and flash the Gapps zip. Then unmount the card in the menu and remove the card and choose reboot. Or you can hold the power button for a few seconds to power down, remove the card and then power up.
You should now be in your new ROM installed to internal memory. Follow the official thread for the detailed instructions.

Are you using an internal card reader to burn the image? Use a cheap usb card reader. And be sure to use win32diskimager in administrator mode.

i'm using a laptop with a built in card reader... and i am using win32diskimager in administrator...

What @leapinlar is saying is that the built in reader is part of the problem. Get a little <$5 reader and use that to make the SD card.
The problem is the OP doesn't provide enough info. Before we offer help, pls do tell us what your intention?
1. Install CM? into eMMC (a.k.a. internal memory) or
2. Run CM? from uSD (a.k.a. external memory card).
Provide solid info then you will get more help that lead you to the right direction.

so the internal card reader is the reason i can't copy files to the sdcard after i write an img to it?

Maybe. Others have had problems using an internal reader. Just try a cheap usb card reader and see.

ok... so i'm i just used an external scard reader and the same thing is happening...
once i write the cwm img to the sdcard it makes it a bootable sdcard and i can access it or move files to it...
I have installed phiremod 7.2 on another nook color and it wants to close android.process.media. Force closes. And it doesn't have the status bar either. When I try to go to Play Store, it force closes android.process.media again. Any help?

yeah same thing happened 2 me... everything would force close and i had no status bar smh...
Hey nando99, try gryphon101's solution. Couldn't hurt.
gryphon101's solution?

...I had the cwm image on my 8gb sd.. correctly. BUT also had the ROM zip and GAPPS zip on the very same card! somehow the clockworkmod would get stuck. I started over with the cwm image on one card, and the zips on another one... worked fine then.

thats how i did it initially... i'd write the img to the sdcard, boot up in cwm no problem... take out the sdcard, format it, put the roms in the sdcard, then put the sdcard back in the NC... install the zips... installed fine... then massive force closes... i will try again, when i get home...
And we are using CWM 3.2.0.1...
