I was thinking this would be my next phone. But I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts after seeing some, not so good reviews. Especially pertaining to the capacitive buttons.

Quite simple for me really, 1)No expandable memory = no no 2)Anyone watching SONY chairman's speech at CES - Ion will be available Internationally from Q3 of this year. Here's to hoping the specs are kept pretty much the same, especially the expandable memory.
the non expandable memory isn't that big of a deal breaker to me.
but i'm waiting for the xperia P for the aluminum case and smaller size.
I would get one right now, if I could find one in the USA. I like it's design more than the Ion. And I like it in white better than the required Ion black.
jesus, i'm reading some reviews and it's amazing how biased the midia is towards apple products, that cnet site in particular is freaking horrible.
for instance, in their playstation vita review, the guy had the nerve to write "hardcore users would prefer an iPod touch" i was speechless.

I will 2nd that. Apple has done a wonderful job at marketing their products.
Yes.Apple 's marketing is one of the best because their products are one year old in features.Nevermind, the fanboys will always be there to defend the bitten fruit.
At the moment the Sony S is the best mobile phone(until the next one).
Just enjoy it.
BUT, when compared to the design of my X10 it is erm, Ug, well not very pretty, with shut lines everywhere and just 'clunky'.
Shame, I was so sure this would be my next phone but having seen it and played with it I am not at all sure..........
However, where else to go?
IF my X10 did not have the infuriating drop out when listening to music via bluetooth and a better in call volume I would not bother...............BUT it has and so a change is required. Just don't know where to go now.
Suggestions (sensible, constructive) welcome.

SGS2. HTC One, Nexus?
wait for the S3 maybe ? OR HTC One-X .... My contract is up in May so no rush for anything yet, always better to wait a month or two anyway, ICS should be updated if there are any bug's plus more time for the Dev's to work on some tweaks
---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 PM ----------
The Xperia S is one I really wanted to like but It's not very sleek, more brick like than the X10, camera looks great as does the display though.
Really want to know when the S3 will be released though ....
Nope, I will be waiting for something new like the sgs3.. I have the feeling that phone development is moving with the speed of light since 2011
Send from beneath my cloak of magic
Okay, seriously? There are several aspects of the Xperia S that are substandard, namely the SoC already being old, the screen being (undoubtly) the same from the HTC Rezound (which has some black crush), and the weight being unbalanced. Not only that, it's launching off of the old Android 2.3 platform, while there are already phones launching off of 4.0.x ICS.
The Xperia S is a bit late, for basically being a slimmer Rezound with more onboard memory.
I'm still getting it (since I don't like the Xperia ION), mainly because I like Sony products.

Hm I would sell it and either wait for an iPhone 5 June/July or take the SGS II. It is just about your needs. Big hands and gorgeous screen --> SGS II
Most beautiful apps and polished and awesome build quality: iPhone

SGSII but since it's not out yet, Cappy all the way.
iOS and Android, I will pick Android.
Apple and Samsung, I will pick Apple.
Also.. the iPhone 4 screen shatters with barely a strong glance at the GLASS screen.
Don't mention the word Apple or iPhone on xda. The mentally challenged will come out and bite rabidly. A better place would be HowardForums.
I would sell the iPhone 4 if you are comfortable with an x10. A sealed box will sell for a good price. Then you can wait for the SGS2. The iPhone 5 probably won't be announced until June, which is quite a while. I wouldn't buy anything right now though, since the stuff on the market right now isn't really an upgrade from what you already have.

OP, if you like the SGS2 then wait for it, or wait for iP5 see what apple puts out.
I am doing that right now, between SGS2 or iP5.
Most of the stuff you will get here is android fans, but in reality apple has much better hardware than anything on android (my opinion). The OS, well they are pretty similar, if you want your phone to just work apple all the way, if you want to customized then go android.
Just be aware that iPhone can also be customized by jailbreaking.
I have a 3GS that's almost 2 years old and it's working as good as day one.

Reality and personal opinion don't mix sadly. Anyway, depends what you mean by "hardware". Apple A4 was Samsung's Hummingbird, just with a lower clock and a slower GPU. Overall build quality may be better... until it falls and you're left with cracked glass all over the phone. Antennagate? Not sure about the much better now...
Software and integration is another story, that's where iOS definitely wins.

It's all relative to needs.
Sure, the iP is a pretty piece of hardware backed up but the brand fandom. everyone has it, everyone wants one.
As far as jailbreaking goes, the cat and mouse update/jailbreak game with apple gets old really fast... Every update of iOS patches something that dev team fixes and then they fix it and apple releases another update and .... you get the idea.
Jailbreaking every two months, playing with the unlocked baseband and risking ending up with a brick is no fun.
Personally I've decided to move away from every apple product, because apple doesn't necessarily have the greatest most advanced hardware, what they do have is massive marketing department with lots of talented people to make people want those devices (just look at apple product placement in the media).
In the end, it's a matter of usability, preference and what works for the individual; at this point in time, the iP4 is clearly outdated compared (hardware wise) to the devices coming out right now or in the coming month (Atrix, SGS2, etc...) and they will have had 6-7 months to prepare and get the iP5 design ready and produced by June-July-Sept with better hardware based on what they saw coming out from the competition at the CES and other events. By the time apple is done promoting their revolutionary iP5, Motorola, HTC and Samsuncg will have come up with somthing better based on the iP5 specs...
The cel phone war will never end, it will be the eternal peeing contest between large companies. As far as the consumer is concerned, we're just trapped in a vicious cycle we have created.
For me what weighs in, is the ability to have full control of my device. Therefore iP is a no go and thus a lesser device in my perception. Atrix was on top of the list until the Moto fiasco with the signed bootloader. The remaining option is the SGS2 depending on how easy it will be to update without relying on Samsung to do so.
On a side note, I've been using a iP3G since it came out and haven't upgraded the device, so I've been with it for almost 4 years; and seeing all these new android devices coming out everyday makes me hate it more day by day.
Android, for me, offers many more possibilities of growth than iOS will ever be able give me. I am not limited by a company as far as what I can do with the hardware that I hold in my hands.
I would rather take an operating system that is designed to let me do anything to it per my own needs and requirements than one that is marketed to the masses for mass consumption. There is nothing wrong with either, it is all preference. Apps fail to interest me as I have a busy and fun enough life to not care about too many of them In fact many people around me have pages of apps which i rarely see being launched except for the odd score checking/email app.
There is no point in comparison of the phone. In fact I would like it if Android makes its own features and chooses its direction instead of following iOS.
Well I would say to just use for a little while and see if you like it. If you do, great. If you don't, sell it.
Either way you could sell one now or keep both and sell both layer then the SG2 comes out.
Did anyone get the iPhone reference in Archer? I totally loled

Hello all,
My teenage daughter has been pestering for a blackberry, but I have managed to convince her an android phone is better
Now here is the point. I want a contract (About £20 -£25 a month max) on vodafone...what is the best to get.....
You know me, even though it will be my daughters I will be playing with it, rooting, flashing etc...
I can see xperia ray for £20.50 with tripple minutes on offer...but I am not to sure about other, non sony, makes...
I do like SE but would be happy to experiment...
Please list the suggestions and why I should go with it
I'm not sure if she'll be happy when you will be playing on her phone
But I think a XPERIA Ray is a good choice, it's goodlooking for girls.
Beside that, I know a few girls that have got a SGS2, and are absolutely loving it. They love the thin design of the phone the most. I'm not sure about the prices you could get the phone for in your country, but if it's possible you could ask her if she wants the SGS2.
It's just a advice without knowing exactly what she (or you) want to buy for her. What is the max. size the phone should be? Is there any limit? I would recommend to not get a phone with a screen bigger then 4.3inch, except for the Galaxy Nexus. But that one will be too expensive I guess Does she prefer any colour?
I'd be glad to help you, if you answer my two questions
Absolutely no other requirements....she wont mind me playing with it cos she knows I can get the good stuff on it for her and make it look good.
So, its what I can get her with the best possibility of me having a play with a new phone really...
I want her to have a decent camera (SE looks good here), good memory, fast (She likes games, like angry birds, cut the rope etc), good sound (So i dont have to replace her i(diot)pod), thats about it.....it will be hers, but I want to flash!!!!

why....sell it to me like you needed the sale..
If you'd go for the camera, you should choose the XPERIA Ray in my opinion. It has great sensors. Games like that will run easily on this phone, BUT the rooting part. This phone doesn't have many development going on. I don't think it will be the right choice if you'd like to mod the phone...
Personally I'd not go for any HTC phone... Why? I think their designs look like some kind of old bald fridge lol!
The phones I'd recommend you, without being a fanboy are:
Samsung:
- SGS2
- SGS Plus (you should watch some reviews about the camera, I'm not sure about it...)
- Galaxy Nexus, if possible within the price limit
Sony:
- XPERIA Ray, just simple and beautiful...
- XPERIA Mini (Pro)?
- XPERIA Arc (S)? This one is big, but much easier to typ etc...
HTC:
This is the hardest part of all, you may like the design. The phone I'd recommend here is the HTC Sensation/HTC Sensation XE?
You could also get the Desire S? I personally would go for a Samsung/Sony Ericsson one.
Motorola:
None, had bad experiences with this brand... Same as with LG...
LG:
One of the worst manufacturers for mobile phones. Same as with Motorola. I think these brands are just focused money, and not any other thing.
I personally own the SGS2, and I must say, the camera is good, not the best... But it's for sure OK. I'm not aware of any other (maybe) good phone.
If you'd get a phone, you should mostly read reviews, and decide by yourself, before you blame anyone for giving your daughter (and you?) a bad phone.
Again, for modding take a Samsung or HTC device.
This is my advice, any additions from others are welcome.
A very good response.
Of course I will decide myself and not blame anyone here for advice
Thanks for telling me the ray doesnt have much development....
I will wait to see what others say
Forgot to tell you, try visiting with your daughter a local phone shop, like The Phone House or w/e. I don't life in your country, so I'm not aware of the stores out there. Visit a phone shop, ask for advice, maybe get a hands-on on some devices! In shops here, there are many show models of the newest smartphones.
Any question left? Feel free to ask

Just curious to know if there are any details of upcoming Android phones in the year 2012? I have searched Google extensively but details appear to be very scarce.
Personally I would like to get a non-hardware keyboard phone for my next one (my last three HTC phones have had keyboards, and you can probably guess which phones they were!). So ideally would like a fairly thin phone, but with a decent battery in it. Would also like much more onboard storage (32gb).
Unfortunately details for upcoming phones seem to be heavily under lock and key.
What's after GNexus
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. After the GNexus, everyone's tight lipped about what they're coming up with.
Just tried a GNexus at the Bell Store (Canada) and didn't walk out too impressed. So I'm now anxiously waiting on other vendors to step up the game and introduce those ICS ready, less capacitive buttons phones already.
Let's see what they have in store for us in 2012.
we shud get something future proof. desire z is good. yes they can use ICS. but we lack a lot of cool feature. maybe like NFC? /: hope new phones are cheap and awesome like dz.

The top of range of the new phones, one that is unanimously considered fantastic, will probably cost a hell of a lot. But as long as it isn't priced silly like an iPhone, then I won't mind taking out a 2 year contract if the phone is really good and ticks all the boxes.
I'm hanging onto my Desire Z till HTC comes out with another slide-out keyboard phone...
I want a new phone to replace my Vision - anyone heard any rumours about any decent qwerty handsets coming out?
Only ones I've heard about are the Dell Hancock and Motorola Droid 4 (RAZR with a keyboard). Both of which I doubt will get released in the UK.
It's a shame HTC haven't announced anything because my contract's up soon and I'm wanting a new toy to play with.
GSMarena seems to have the good list of phones, and some rumored ones too. I feel it's more a case of ditching hardware keyboards because of more time, money and resources needed to make them. Maybe that's why HTC is able to crank out so many touch phones but rarely any keyboard ones.
The few best out there are the Samsung i927 and Motorola XT860. Both are on dual core processors.
Here's the current list via GSMarena search for 800Mhz, 512mb RAM and up phones.

Yep, seems like "the best" supported QWERTY out there right now, factoring dev support is the Mytouch 4g Slide. G2 comes the second. As far as I can tell, the dev on the MT4GS on CM9 has posted youtubes of his progress in their section. It looks on par with the progress of our DZ ICS roms.
But I don't want to drop my plan and head over to T-mobile. I'm comfortable with my provider.
I hope it doesn't come to the day QWERTY phones become a dying breed esp with XDA devs. The lack of "must-have" QWERTY releases are making it look like it is.

Well, if Apple has their way in court, there won't be any Android phones anymore. They are winning patent case after patent case, and their goal is to shut Android down and have a monopoly on the smartphone market. Some think android is in real trouble... though it will likely be a case of Google having to pay a truckload of money to Apple. Gotta love modern capitalism....
Sheesh, didn't know the legal battle between them was serious enough for an OS extinction. The patent system is seriously corrupted.

I think the judges are starting to realize that apple is just sue-happy and thinks everyone stole their work. Pretty soon they start suing the produce guys claiming they stole their name lol! Idiots!
I'm curious about a new qwerty HTC also. The only newer choice we have is the MyTouch 4G Slide but it has ZERO dev support. I guess I'll see if I can make it until the next G model or something. My G2 is in pretty good shape so I'll be okay for a while, I hope

Wha? They have literally 4 whole pages of their development section lol! what are you talking about?!
Unfortunately, Apple has taken the road of "if you can't beat em, sue em". They are just pissed because somebody came around, and gave people what they wanted, instead of TOLD them what they wanted. Like how about big screen smartphones, and the ability to move files without having to use Apple's crappy iTunes bloatware? And now they wonder why Android has taken the smartphone marketshare from them.
Now Apple is burning the bridges with other companies that made the iPhone what it is, in an attempt to extort Android from the top spot. Samsung has made the CPUs for all the iPhones, and the memory chips for many of them, until recently where Apple is now trying to move to other suppliers, so it can more easily attack Samsung without repercussions. And how useless would the iPhone be without the Google search engine, or Google Maps? Some have postulated that the iPhone location logging debacle earlier this year was an indication that Apple is trying to come up with a map and navigation solution so it can break away from Google.
Hopefully, the recent patent ruling against HTC will be tied up with appeals and countersuits. I don't see the smartphone landscape changing just from a few patent suits. And hopefully that would never happen, as I enjoy having a smartphone that actually acts like a computer, not a closed architecture iPod.
Back to the OP, it seems like HTC's is just starting to reveal specs on its 2012 devices. Of interest are the Elite (4.7" display and LTE on AT&T), the Ville (4.3" AMOLED display, dual core 1.5 GHz CPU) and the Edge (4.7" SLCD and quad core 1.5 GHz NVIDIA CPU). Unfortunately, no hint of anything with a hardware keyboard anytime soon, AFAIK.

The HTC Vivid (released on AT&T earlier this month) looks pretty nice. But the body is a little too angular and plastic for my liking. It seems that HTC might be (thankfully) going back to the aluminum unibody that it has become known for.

What do you guys think? I think its a winner. All Sony's 2012 phones were terrible.
I think it has nothing to do with the Nexus 4...
Edited for helpfulness: Either post things like this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021559 or in the android general section.

It doesn't look bad at all. And dust, water resistance is always a plus. But I prefer the N4 with pure android and updates from Google.
It's OK to post this here. We don't have an off-topic forum, or even an off-topic thread, right? Oh wait...
Agreed. This has nothing to do with the Nexus 4. If you're already willing to jump ship, well... Boo.

Yeah, but alot of the CM devs seem to like Xperia phones since Sony actually works closely with them so they have functional source drops, blobs and documentation... Which means that Sony is good enough for people who are interested in their designs.

... same thing I mentioned in the other thread. phones being announced at CES are still being released with older android versions. waiting for the update to come out? no thanks. I will stick to my Nexus devices, I can't trust any manufacturer to release updates for their phones in a timely mannered. nice specs though.
Glass back? Guess it will get scratches 'out of nowhere'.
In that respect I guess it does belong in this forum

They weren't.
But with them releasing a phone like this, it kinda makes me hope the next Nexus is made by them. The Nexus Z? I could go Sony for that. Hell, I went LG for this one, and I swore I would never do that again.

Deja vu Xperia S release?
Actually they are better this time. I'm surprised they have 4.1, instead of 4.0. ROFL
Screw all these phones getting bigger and bigger its so depressing even with this nexus its semi hard to type with one hand when ur reaching over for the A or Q ..no complaining but cmon where are they gonna draw a line of being too big for mobile use

Price: 528 pounds in UK.
Yeah they aren't even comparable, it's twice the price of N4.

I love Sony and I hope they can see success in the future. I'm a Sony loyalist to the bitter end. I would love to see them make a Nexus device in the future. I would consider buying one of their products if they made devices that mattered. Sony used to "wow" the world with their innovation and design. I find it sad to see them make marginalized products. Even Steve Jobs tried copying their design and that says something. With that said, this phone looks like a step in the right direction. The physical design is stunning and I’m sure the screen tech will blow people away, however I really think they needed to bring their A-game, but this looks like another phone that will get lost in the shuffle. In terms of specs, it would have been awesome if they stuffed a newly announced Tegra 4 and some new battery tech (keep in mind Sony is a major manufacture of high-tech batteries). Sony really needs a game changing device to blow away companies like Samsung & Apple and I don’t see this being that type of a device.
Why is this on the Nexus 4 forum?

Were they ever away?
Their hardware has already been great, it's just their slow update cycles that swayed me towards Nexus 4.

Just as the Engadget Podcast said.... when was the last time you could remember a hit phone by Sony? Android? Nope sorry. Yes they have tried, but their company is more PS3 and other things focused. Yes maybe they are now realizing that Mobile is THE place to be( a little late there) and hopefully they can get their sh*t together. I love my PS3 and other Sony products but their presence is not felt in the mobile industry, regardless of how good their hardware is. HTC make Beautiful hardware, but even they are sliding off the map...
4 easy step Success recipe for Sony, HTC or any other struggling company:
1.BEAUTIFUL durable, Hardware, make it 4.7( nothing bigger than that)
2.POWERFUL guts like quad core, 1080p display etc,
3.PURE Google Android, with ( people LOVE this! Look at other companies that are doing this, Huwaie, ZTE etc..)
4.Stick to ONE phone and make it your Flagship phone!
5.Guarantee the fastest UPDATES for it besides the Nexus for 2 years!
Done, you will have a hot seller! Oh and market it right, no creepy commercials.

First, the iPega: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/ipega-android-gaming-tablet-launching-in-may-video-18-04-2013/
Then the IbenX: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/ibenx-gamepad-android-gaming-tablet-unveiled-15-04-2013/
I think the iPega would be better, with a very nice gamepad, and more portable. I think it would need a quad core processor to beat the IbenX and the upcoming Wikipad. Thoughts?
I like the ibenx better though id never buy either. The Ipega looks like it has a smaller screen and I don't like the awkward shape of it. But I wouldn't replace my play with either of those. Though I would if they made a phone like the party but with analog sticks like the vita instead of touch pads. It seems like these gaming tablets are popping up all over the place noire we just need to find the best one

No real alternqtives!!
We have got a great phone, but these are ugly fat tablets!!!
I wouldnt really buy one, they're not a good alternative for the xperia PLAY
Wow, nice try. But, the Xperia Play concept still is the King of the Gaming Phone for me. Awake, Sony! Go Go, release the Xperia Play II =D
It's too big, isn't it?
i dont think they are alternatives for xperia play in my opinion cause they lack the phone part,i m gonna be using play till it breaks up or if sony releases a new one :fingers-crossed:
What about the JXD S7800b which will be released mid this month or latest by end of this month or beginning of next month according to willgoo.

I just ordered a JXD s7800B last week. Seemed like the best choice given what's out right now. I have no clue when I'll get it since there's no real info about an actual release date. I'm hoping sometime late next week, but we'll see. I'll try to post a video review when I get my hands on it and have some time to mess with it. Here's hoping it rules!
Wow Sony for such a lackluster phone I bought 2 years ago or so, I still wouldn't trade it for the latest and greatest out now
unfortinatlly , they arn't a phone ! just tablet !
if i want to carry a gaming handy console, i prefer ps vita or 3DS .
i' looking for gaming-phone device , like xperia play.
just " much i5 " remain . a gaming phone , but you know , that is chinese .... and ...
Great choice bro. :good: Do let me know how's the peformance and battery life when you get it. I'm really looking forward to your review. My only worries are whether they will release the codings or not haha as I'm quite fond with custom roms and kernels. It's very interesting to explore new possibilities after all.
Sony announced a new slim PS Vita with some hardware changes to a new screen.

Just wanted everyone to know that some videos were posted of the JXD s7800A (the weaker one), and it looks so freaking awesome. It seems to handle everything very well, and this is the weaker model. The device also goes portrait view no problem, which is totally sweet. Check this forum post http://boards.dingoonity.org/jxd-devices/jxd-s7800-quad-core-will-be-released!/ to see some vids of emulation, the unboxing, and some nice photos of the device. I bought my s7800B a few weeks ago, and apparently it's delayed, which sucks, but I'm willing to wait since this thing is going to rule so much. Enjoy! I'm stoked to get mine!

Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I will be taking a look at it.
The thing about the Xperia Play, is that it could switch from phone to PSP in a matter of seconds. These "Alternatives" are just android devices that were made for gaming, but do you really see yourself having a conversation with one of these things?
Sent from my R800i using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah. The killer feature in the XP for me is that, when you hide the gamepad it's a smartphone like any other.
I don't see myself with a gamepad or handheld console style device as smartphone.
Some company should make something similar to the XP. I can't understand why there's nothing similar with so many Android devices released around the world and even an increasing number of Android gaming devices.

Couldn't agree more. xplay has been my one and only phone/gaming device. I could never see myself playing games using a touch screen. It's downright stupid. With all these andoird gaming devices I just cant see why none of em has tried to make a phone/gaming hybrid like the xplay.
