Contacts in Asian characters and english characters. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

So I picked up a note for my pops.
He has a ton of contacts that are in Asian characters and contacts that are in english characters.
The contact list has the Asian character names as being listed first.
Is there a way to flip the order around? English alphabet first, then the Asian second?
He more frequently has the need to look for the English contacts but he has to "scroll" through Asia first. Lol.
Btw, his os is set to an Asian language natively.
He lives 2 hours away, otherwise I'd be messing with the phone right now helping him.
Any info would help. Thanks.

Phone number now has brackets?

After hard-resetting my mini and loading ROM 1.11 then not loading the extended rom ( reset prior to installation ) I notice when I dial a number on the phone, it now reads (993) 137-83 instead of 9931 3783
Any ideas as to why? Am I supposed to run a particular cab file?
thanks in advance

The short answer is YES, its in one of the CAB files but I don't know which one. If I hat to guess I'd go for the "default_103133" CAB.
What i did was test each CAB file to see what it changed but didn't write it down.
Try playing around with the regional settings... example if u use english (australia) the bracket will be gone or if u use english (united states) the numbers dialled will be according to the standard format there which has brackets. good luck.

Thanks folks, Adit you hit the nail on the head. My regional settings were set to United States. Much appreciated.
hi. im in sydney wit xda2mini, set my region to english aust.
in my contact i have like this : (04) 0157-5243 for mobile phone, which is very bad looking. can some1 tell me how to change it to 0401575243 or 0401 243 575.. as long it doenst have bracket, then im happy
maybe this is because my outlook? i sync my xda with outlook 2000. i tried to change outlook setting but couldnt find the correct option like region or something. thx every1~~~~~~~~~~~
Check ypur regional settings on your PDA.
START, SETTINGS, REGIONAL SETTINGS, make sure it is selected to ENGLISH (AUSTRALIA)
I have changed this setting and I still have the numbers looking stupid with the brackets.
Might it have something to do with how outlook handles the numbers?
yes, thats what i said in prev. post. if i insert new contact FROM XDA, then i wont have bracket. but if i create new contact FROM OUTLOOK, it will make 1st 2 digits inside brackets. i couldnt find any setting in outlook to modify this.. some1 can help? thx
Outlook
Lads,
This is an outlook querk. If you go into a contact and enter a phone number or tap the edit button next to a contact you get a window which has three enterable areas. Country code, NDC (National destination code) or area code and number. Outlook automatically formats the number into
+<country code> (<area code>) <number
You can stop it from doing this but it can be helpful when its formatted like this. I've changed all my numbers to this format.

This bracket thing is really annoying me too.
Is there any English (Indonesia) or English (Singapore) that don't use bracket? Or should we change to English (Australia)?
Hormat saya,
Arto.
UK
Try UK regional settings. No brackets
i believe the problem is at the OUTLOOK side, not from the xdamini. like i said, (mine set to english australia) if i enter new contact FROM XDA, then it will be stay without bracket, but iwill have bracket if i create new contact FROM OUTLOOK.
I think it will only add brackets once you edit the number. I think Outlook sees spaces in the phone number as telling it what is the international code, area code etc. If you leave the number as +11234567890 I think Outlook ignores it.
I had mine as a mixture but prefer them with the brackets and so edited them.
Its definitely Outlook not the phone

Brackets for the first 3 digits..

Hi guys
Need your help. My friend just got a D810/Trinity recently. He has English (Australia) as his setting. There wasn't any brackets for the phone number in the Contact before today, but suddenly, now there's brackets appearing. For e.g. (698)70948. In Singapore, there is no area code which needs to be in brackets.
Anyone know how to resolve this? We didn't want to select Chinese (Singapore) in the setting cos' we do not want Chinese character to be displayed.
i would change it to what i wanted in outlook delete contacts on the phone and sycn them back from outlook

receiving sms with foreign characters

I have been trying to figure this out, and I can't seem to. I text a lot in spanish, and when someone tries to send me a text with a spanish character (á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ) I don't receive the characters on my phone. Instead I will something like { or ]... something weird. However if they send it to my google voice number, when I open up the google voice on my phone, I see the text at it was intended to be seen. The same happens when I text people in spanish. If i text myself these characters, it shows up fine on my phone, however, sent to to other people, not so much. Any ideas???
Text in english?
lol... yeah... but obviously, me being bilingual and all, some of the people i text don't speak english... obviously you don't care about helping with my problem

read foreign sms language

Hi Everybody,
I have a UK english touch 2. I went to Thailand recently, but I could not read the sms on the screen. It just showed square blocks for each letter. Is there some type of language setting to read sms, like thai?
Thanks for any tips.
The Thai provider should recognize you are a foreign user so send messages in English.......
There are translation programs but they will not work.....
I use a Thai sim card, so they can not see that I am foreign. I was assuming it was a language problem with the touch2.

[Q] Sending/Receiving chinese to/from N1

Theres a particular problem been having that i just recently found out
My N1 and my mom's 1st gen iphone can send and receive Chinese text messages.
N1 can also receive from everyone but when sent, a lot get symbols instead of the Chinese characters like boxes or stars...
recently tried with a new iphone 4. i can receive their chinese text messages but i cant sent it to them. they get weird symbols.
any ideas why this happens?
I think it's probably because of the unicode setting in the app you use, you would need to change it to the same/common unicode set for chinese characters that other phones use.
Yes, how did you send the text message? By forwarding it or typing it out? Which application did you use to send it? The stock messaging app or a 3rd party app like handcent or chompsms?
And which keyboard did you use to type chinese characters? And is it Traditional or simplified chinese?
I just sent a text message to my colleague successfully by typing in simplified chinese. The keyboard I'm using is Smart Keyboard Pro with ZH chinese installed.
Btw, you should ask this in the Q n A forum instead...
just stock normal text messaging.. the input method i have is google pinyin. i also have hanwriting IME but i forget characters a lot of times so i go with pinyin to type messages.
how do i check the unicode settings on both sides?
Can we know more about your phone? Like whether stock? Or custom rom?
Also what language is your phone in? Check in settings -> Language & Keyboard
stock 2.2.1 build FRG83D
language is english (united states)
That is weird. I just set my phone to English (USA), sent a chinese text message using google pinyin to a nokia phone and it sees the text without fail.
Is there another English with an Asian country in the language settings?
Also are you in Asia or America? It's unlikely but if you are on Google Voice (only in america) there are problems sending non english text on it.
If not, you might have to uninstall google pinyin, reboot the phone and reinstall google pinyin again to try it out.
He can't be using Google Voice to send messages, since the Voice app just gives an error when you try to send Chinese messages.
I'm on T-Mo in the US, and I send Chinese messages to my friends iPhone 3GS without problems.
in the USA, using T-Mobile. No data plan.
can send/receive chinese texts to 1st gen iphone with no problems. other phones like the iphone 4 cant.
