I've had the captivate about 24 hours now and dig it. I've rooted it and remove the att bloatware (per titanium backup), I've also performed a backup using Rom Manager.
I'm having trouble getting it up and running on an enterprise wireless what uses 802.1x PEAP authentication. I can get through all the auth. steps, and the device is assigned an IP, but I am unable to do anything that requires an internet connection; browser, market, etc.
Has anyone else ran into this issue?
*****EDIT*****
sigh i just realized that this is in the wrong area, it should have been over in development...i'm an idiot
I had a similar problem on a WEP-encrypted network, which I fixed by setting a static IP on the phone and then setting it back to DHCP (the correct setting). However, your problem could be entirely different than mine (not that I even am sure what my problem was, just that I fixed it!)
Best of luck!
Having the same problem on enterprise access points regardless of encryption. Home wifi netwroks work great (open and WPA2). Enterprise APs (open and WEP) connect and give me an IP, but will not transfer data. Think its a driver issue with the Wifi, it happens on every captivate ive tested, and seems to be more widespread than the GPS issue.
I have had the same issue with my work at work. I can get it to connect and get a ip but can not pass any data.

Had the same problem at work. Luckily I'm an admin and figured mine out. Our monowall portal was the issue. I can give a detailed answer for my problem tomorrow when I get to work.
I actually had the cap wiped to go back, then I literally figured out the problem. Thanks go out to my team mate for helping me talk through this.

can't wait to hear what your fix was!

This sounds more like your network not being allowing your device rather then the device having an issue.
it's been frustrating as I know two other guys with android devices that didn't have an issue. one is a droid eris running 2.1 and the other is a nexus one running 2.2.

Worked closely with my highly experienced network admin in my dept. for an afternoon (we had some time to kill). He checked the firewall and dhcp servers, ran packet traces, etc.
With what I'm experiencing, its the device. These wifi networks we use with Cisco APs are completely wide-open. All other phones and mobile devices have always worked great for years. We rely on this network for many custom applications and mobile tools.
Once the dhcp server leases an address, it seems like the radio stack hangs, and the device ceases communication. Here's an older thread on the exact issue over at androidfouroms: http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/130403-wifi-terrible.html
I have tested multiple new unmodified captivates and the issue is identical accross the board.
Now that I am at work, and have coffee in me and not beer, I will go through the problem I had with miCap and works wireless. Due to my skeptical ways, I will be semi vague for security purposes. On with it.
When I originally got miCap (pet name for it) I was able to access our public wifi. It allowed me into the public portal to agree to terms. I played a little bit on it, but wanted to see if I could access our private wifi. I got in the private no problem. But after that I never was able to get back on to our public. It did the same thing as I've read. It got an ip no problem (via dhcp) and acted like all was well. No browser, or ap could get a connection. The phone would not switch over to 3g to get info.
Armed with ip and mac address, my co-worker and I started to did through our monowall. ( He also has a cap that had no issues on public or private). We try tried reserving the ip for miCap, didn't work. We tried static ip, didn't work. I spent the morning completely wiping miCap to get it back to return worthy.
This was when I decided on last ditch effort.
Our ap's are cisco's that connect into monowall. I got into monowall and dug around. I found that with in the captive portal (how fitting) that the ip/mac associated with my phone hadn't checked in for 8 days. Even though I tried everyday. I deleted the entry to the phone there and suddenly my phone was getting access again.
Now I understand that this may not help everyone, because setups vary from place to place. But digging deeper into configurations at the access points may be what is needed. Do I think the phone had nothing to do with it? No, I think it helped aggravate the problem.
We have had problems with the Intel 3945abg chipsets with the same exact setup. That problem was fixed with driver updates on the laptops.
sorry for the long winded reply.
So in a nut shell you deleted the DNS entry for that ip/mac in the firewall and you are working.

Essentially yes. But it is not listed like that in the portal. Hmmm. I wonder about the combo of dhcp/dns being the culprit.
I was able to resolve this issue by changing my connection settings from DHCP to static for the Cisco APs.
Installing WiFi Buddy from the market allowed me to access these connection settings.
I just used an address from our static IP pool.
Manually set IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS, and now im finally rolling on our enterprise wifi network
I sent a help ticket into samsung; maybe if enough folks do we can get it on their radar.

you can set the ip manually with out an app. When on the wifi screen, hit menu-advanced. This is a good time to set the wi-fi sleep policy also.

UPDATE
So I flashed the i9000 Eclair rom last night, and when I got into work today I can connect and use the wifi here. So looks like something AT&T buggered up, big surprise there, when they "customized" the captivate.
As much as I normally love blaming AT&T for problems, that can't be done here. My Captivate (running Stock Firmware) connects just fine to my work network. We use 802.1x with PEAP/MSCHAPv2 for authentication.
Anyone been able to connect at over 802.11b speeds while connected to an 802.1x network? I show connections at G and N speeds on my WPA2 network but nothing over 11Mbps on 802.1x.

Hi,
I am also having problems with my work wifi network.
It is 802.1x, on TTLS/PAP it also requires a thawte premium server ca certificate insalled.
Is there any way to connect this kind of networks?
With my previous iphone 3g it was taking only 4-5 seconds.
Hi all.
I am having some trouble with my a501 and ics rom's. Does not matter what from I use or how many times I wipe data or format system and so on I still can not get a connection to Google servers. When I try to setup my account it says that it can not establish a reliable connection.
If I try to sign into the YouTube app it just says that it times out.
I can still browse the internet fine just no Google apps.
I can however connect to the hotspot on my phone and it will work. So I think it maybe something to do with my router but I have no idea what as any hc rom works just fine.
I am currently using Thor v126 I think I have also tried light speed and flexreaper. Think that's how you spell them. Also tried static IP.
Any ideas on what to try would be great.

It has been a while thought I would ask again.
I have narrowed it down. It is definitely my router. Have tried some friends now and it is all good.
And it is just Google apps. You tube, Gmail, play store. Internet works fine. Using it right now.

Can you try to use some other DNS servers like GoogleDNS 8.8.8.8 or maybe OpenDNS.
Or even with your current ISP's DNS can you check whether you can resolve addresses like play.google.com
Also try to check if any proxy settings are in use.
I have tried Google DNS servers but no go.
Internet works fine. I can go to the play store on the internet find the app and tell it to download to the device but it won't download.
Once I get a connection where the signal bars turn blue it downloads.
Also I am not using any proxy.

I have now tried this and still no go. Wireless symbol will not turn blue.
Update.
I was able to get this to work by running the tab through a pptp vpn. As soon as I disconnect the vpn I the symbol turns grey again.

I had this same issue a few months back, but I was on a Honeycomb rom (forgot which one). I could browse the web on the browser just fine but couldn't log into my google account or access any gapps. I remember my device was having trouble being detected on my pc at that point too. I think I did a complete format on the system memory and my sd card (it wasn't being detected either). After that I re-installed the rom and everything just started working fine, was able to log into google and such after that.
Hello everyone, I really need a help here.
I was on a MIUI GB ROM and bought a wifi router Tplink WR74ON. After a few days I could not access google.com, bing.com, ask.com... and YT behaved strangely. But I could access czech domains and "anything.google.com", which leads to google.com/anything, so no help. Oh and the Play store had no connection. Google.cz works until I perform a search... then No connection !instantly again.Yahoo and a lot of smaller sites work. I tried stock browser and Opera mobile.
So I flashed MIUI Scotland 4.0.4 and after a few hours the problem is here again. Restart of anything does not help, on notebook there is no problem and the router is set out of the box, no special settings of any kind. It pings google.com with no problem.
If anyone has any idea.... thank you.
And it seems that I can connect to google via IP address...
Huh solved... apparently there was a DNS problem, I had to bypass the router and set public DNS.
Nice of you to give us the solution .

I'm hopeless here. I have a paid VPN service, and it works perfectly with my PC, with my mobile on Wi-Fi and with my friend's mobile also on 3G, but not on mine. For sure there's something wrong with my device. I tried hard reset, different ROMS and all different servers and settings.
It does connect to the VPN and it keeps up the connection, but internet just doesn't work. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I tried to search other threads about this, but no success.
Thanks
Raphael
Same here ... I search but nothing ... I'm on Ressurection Remix 3.1.3 with Kernel cm 10.1... VPN in 3G don't work

vpn thrue 3g and mobile connection
hi
reason, routing.
1. you have to setup your vpn connection to route any data between your vnp-connection.
or
2. you use another apn who route unsecured and secured data to different routes.
(secured data = VPN, unscured Data => www)
Check the isp apn if it use a stateful paket inspection firewall. this apn can ussually only route secured data (vpn).
Its no bug its a feature to solve some problems like too much connections, timeouts, reduction of hacker attack surface, and more..
you can find this information in the special vpn-whitepaper from your isp.
i hope this helps you.
How does the go to my p.c. app work?Is it pretty good app. Thanks

One thing I notice not all 3G provider allow VPN traffic. Orange is one that I discovered not allow VPN via 3G.

When you set up the VPN on your phone, make sure you fill out the forwarding fields as 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 otherwise no traffic will be forwarded through it. Testing on wifi from the same location as the host is a miserable way to test VPN as it tells you nothing. Turn off the wifi, and always test on your mobile data. There ARE carriers out there that WILL filter out VPN connections for normal user accounts and require you sign up under a business-class account to use such connectivity, this is because they want more money from you, and to not give you an easy way to get around their tethering detection. Plus in some countries, you're not allowed to possess the capability to encrypt and secure your own data/traffic and the means of encryption are banned (and therefore filtered "on-the-wire").
Use VPN Service that has open port. Like http://xtreamvpnworld.blogspot.com ive been using it for more than a year. I got no problem.

That's seems odd. Anyway I haven't tried built in vpn, how about openvpn? Have you tried it? I think built in vpn doesn't support voips like viber etc. Or maybe your vpn provider does not. I really don't know. Because I tried using droid and xtream vpn it works on every chatting platforms.

ok i've installed already OpenVPN for android then how can i have this FREE PREMIUM vpn?
I figured I would add some info instead of just learning. I really like XDA-dev... and go to this site often to solve issues.
I purchased a Cisco rv220w router on sale for the purpose of building a cheap network and VPN for my android (Tablets and HTC one Phones).
I am pretty good at networking so I gave it a try. In less than a day I now have a fully working network to include a VPN server that works.
VPN for all android devices uses PPTP. I know the limits and fully realize that PPTP has issues. However it is working. The VPN is designed for connectivity, not privacy. I want to avoid censorship and wifi sniffing of passwords, etc... My solution after 3 days seems to be working.
Getting other VPN solutions to work with Android seems to be a bridge to far. If there are other VPN protocols that work please let me know and I will try them. I have devices running 4.2, 4.2 and 4.4. I have a few devices running Windows. I will use cisco any connect for windows computers. Not the best but it works.
Any improvements or suggestions are welcome.
I use OpenVPN. Works very well for Android and Macs. There's a client for Android too.
You can download the free OpenVPN image from their website, but it's limited to only 2 users. For my purpose, it works great.
I will try it. Yesterday I had to reboot the router after 3 days of no problem. It kept dropping WiFi to a tablet. I will have to keep an eye on it.
