I figured I would add some info instead of just learning. I really like XDA-dev... and go to this site often to solve issues.
I purchased a Cisco rv220w router on sale for the purpose of building a cheap network and VPN for my android (Tablets and HTC one Phones).
I am pretty good at networking so I gave it a try. In less than a day I now have a fully working network to include a VPN server that works.
VPN for all android devices uses PPTP. I know the limits and fully realize that PPTP has issues. However it is working. The VPN is designed for connectivity, not privacy. I want to avoid censorship and wifi sniffing of passwords, etc... My solution after 3 days seems to be working.
Getting other VPN solutions to work with Android seems to be a bridge to far. If there are other VPN protocols that work please let me know and I will try them. I have devices running 4.2, 4.2 and 4.4. I have a few devices running Windows. I will use cisco any connect for windows computers. Not the best but it works.
Any improvements or suggestions are welcome.
I use OpenVPN. Works very well for Android and Macs. There's a client for Android too.
You can download the free OpenVPN image from their website, but it's limited to only 2 users. For my purpose, it works great.
I will try it. Yesterday I had to reboot the router after 3 days of no problem. It kept dropping WiFi to a tablet. I will have to keep an eye on it.

Hey, I have been looking forward to the 2.1 update for our Heros because I thought it was going to finally give us simple VPN access... *to Cisco concentrators*. Unfortunately, it only gives us IPSec/L2TP PSK or CRT... whereas I need a pure IPSec client that supports Group Authentication in order to connect to my corporate VPN.
So, I, and I am sure many others, need to revert back to the Get-A-Robot-VPNC client to connect to our corporate networks, but apparently do not have a correct tun.ko module. Trying to insmod a tun.ko module, I get "invalid format" or "failed executable" - So, can someone provide a tun.ko that we can use, or explain how to get one installed in these new 2.1 ROMs?
I am currently using the ZenHero 2.1 ROM
Thanks! Once I get VPN access again, the Hero will really be something pretty damn awesome again.
Or, does anyone know of any VPN clients coming down the pipe for Android? or any other projects in development?
I heard Shew Soft was coming out with a mobile variant... not sure if it'll be on Android though..
I have no use for it or way to try it, but I did find vpn connections in the market when searching for something else and remembered this thread. It said on the comments though to go to the site for the latest version. http://code.google.com/p/get-a-robot-vpnc/
actually, a search for vpn in the market turned up a few options. Take a look, I don't know exactly what you need.
I have been trying multiple ways. I even tried the tun.ko. I have not been successful but I would like to hear if anyone is successful.

Unfortunately, none support, what I think to be the most popular VPN type, from a corporate stand-point: pure IPSec that supports Group Authentication. Most in the market are just for VPNC.
Thanks for your post though.
Yes the android app is lacking.
I have a Cisco concentrator working with MY phone. I just dumped all Group based auth. We wanted a device that would work with 99.999% of devices on the market and our little Asa-5505 does the trick.
You should be able to configure policies on the cisco to handle either clients, that is really your or your admins choice.
Otherwise the stock android vpn client MY only complaint is it will NOT let me vpn over mobile network.. only wifi. Kinda pointless if I have wifi I would use my laptop to vpn to work. WTF?
Sprint is the problem

I realize this post has been sitting here for a while, but I thought this might help some others who may run into similar issues. At my work, we have all Cisco equipment and have a Cisco ASA configured with PSK mobile VPN. We are having basically no luck getting in using Sprint-connected devices (Sprint EVO 4G) on anything but Wifi. I CAN, however, connect just fine on my Samsung Captivate over AT&T 3G signal using the same built-in android VPN client. We've gone the rounds with the Sprint Engineers on this and they have nothing they can pinpoint that is causing this outage. I would really like for either Cisco or Sprint to come up with a good explanation as it shouldn't matter if you're on Wifi or 3G, it should work either way. The point is that it works on AT&T for us, but not Sprint, as far as 3G/4G data connection is concerned.
I'm a University student who would love to use this tablet at uni. Connecting to "eduroam" is not a problem but the proxy support in samsungs rom is. It's easy to put the proxy details in the wireless advanced settings and get the default browser working. But without dropbox and a few other key apps, it's useless.
I previously had an Iconia a500, rooted with various roms over the time I had it. I found an app called proxydroid which worked brilliantly with all of the roms and even started the global proxy specifically when connected to eduroam the uni network. My problem is this app no longer works, i've tried every other proxy app out there and can't seem to get it working. Interestingly enough my original Galaxy S worked fine as well but my new Galaxy Nexus running cm9 has the same problem.
I can't figure out the underlying cause! Any help would be appreciated.
I use proxydroid with no problems at all

No one at work with an android phone/tablet can connect to the WiFi. IPhone/pad Windows p8 and laptops. Connect fine. It gets stuck at authentication error or can't authenticate at least on my phones/tablets. I don't know if there is an firewall issue but I find it hard to believe as other devices can. Is it an android issue? We have like 10 or so access points or extenders all under the same name. I don't know if maybe I need to find the main router and try connecting to that... any ideas?

Are you sure it's WEP? It sounds like you're using a flavor of 802.1x WPA like EAP-FAST which isn't really supported on Androids.
It shows up as WEP secured.
From what I've gathered. Some android phones used to work but there was a lot of people that couldn't connect. So they called our IT guy and he called our network guy and they got it opened up so everyone was able to connect. Then a short time later android stopped connecting

Long time ago but still an issue. Anyone know the issue?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
First of all, WEP is highly insecure, but I don't know why you would have problems. I would upgrade the security to WPA/WPA2 to prevent people from "stealing" your internet.

Usually it's an issue with the router/AP, not the phone. No idea why either.
Normally the security protocol is WEP ,its ok..the problem is not with your phone maybe they adopted for MAC filtering..you should try to check with the network admin..or try connecting a laptop and see if it works with the same protocol..or try to check with the network admin to move on to wpa or wpa2..maybe things can sort out
I'm hopeless here. I have a paid VPN service, and it works perfectly with my PC, with my mobile on Wi-Fi and with my friend's mobile also on 3G, but not on mine. For sure there's something wrong with my device. I tried hard reset, different ROMS and all different servers and settings.
It does connect to the VPN and it keeps up the connection, but internet just doesn't work. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I tried to search other threads about this, but no success.
Thanks
Raphael
Same here ... I search but nothing ... I'm on Ressurection Remix 3.1.3 with Kernel cm 10.1... VPN in 3G don't work

vpn thrue 3g and mobile connection
hi
reason, routing.
1. you have to setup your vpn connection to route any data between your vnp-connection.
or
2. you use another apn who route unsecured and secured data to different routes.
(secured data = VPN, unscured Data => www)
Check the isp apn if it use a stateful paket inspection firewall. this apn can ussually only route secured data (vpn).
Its no bug its a feature to solve some problems like too much connections, timeouts, reduction of hacker attack surface, and more..
you can find this information in the special vpn-whitepaper from your isp.
i hope this helps you.
How does the go to my p.c. app work?Is it pretty good app. Thanks

One thing I notice not all 3G provider allow VPN traffic. Orange is one that I discovered not allow VPN via 3G.

When you set up the VPN on your phone, make sure you fill out the forwarding fields as 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 otherwise no traffic will be forwarded through it. Testing on wifi from the same location as the host is a miserable way to test VPN as it tells you nothing. Turn off the wifi, and always test on your mobile data. There ARE carriers out there that WILL filter out VPN connections for normal user accounts and require you sign up under a business-class account to use such connectivity, this is because they want more money from you, and to not give you an easy way to get around their tethering detection. Plus in some countries, you're not allowed to possess the capability to encrypt and secure your own data/traffic and the means of encryption are banned (and therefore filtered "on-the-wire").
Use VPN Service that has open port. Like http://xtreamvpnworld.blogspot.com ive been using it for more than a year. I got no problem.

That's seems odd. Anyway I haven't tried built in vpn, how about openvpn? Have you tried it? I think built in vpn doesn't support voips like viber etc. Or maybe your vpn provider does not. I really don't know. Because I tried using droid and xtream vpn it works on every chatting platforms.

Hi
I am using a g900t with the AICP ROM 7.0 release and I am having some issues with VPN. I purchased VPN access from StrongVPN (If you know of a better provider please tell me who and why). I added my VPN credentials to the built VPN section of the ROM and it connects but randomly quits after awhile. I tried setting up the Always On VPN option but when it connects i have no internet access?
I am new to VPNs just trying to get something fast and reliable set up but feel i am stumbling around like a fool. Any help?
