Yes, we get that. But I think the point the OP was hammering home was the fact that the Note is in its prime when it comes to handling multitasking....whereas other devices with different architecture/screen/resolution might not do that great of a job.
Nice vid!
Of course! The Note is the only Android device to be able to do that.
Cough cough.

My Nokia N900 could do it two years ago.
In fact, the lack of real multitasking on android platform when older devices can do it was a surprise to me.

I know, this is very sad. I went and watched some N900 reviews after you made this comment and WOW, I feel ripped off, our phone is over 10x more powerful than that thing gpu and all.
The only (that I can think of) in regards to why we don't have this level of multitasking would be because of **Battery Life**
I dunno though, I would still like the option!

i wouldn't say that at all. if people can be productive on their iPhones, and our screen is 2.5x larger, having the ability to split screen has tremendous potential.
it would be fantastic to say, web browse on one side and take notes on the other, or sms info to others. one big problem with this, in my quick testing, is that the keyboard is just way too big.
ive been saying for ages, we need a keyboard where you can select what percent of screen width to use, much like samsungs one handed keyboard

Really practical. The very day you could see the real multitasking on your device you would love it to the point of answering yourself how in the hell has been able to survive on your life until these moment. Because it not consist on wacht a random number of videos at the same time but on to be able to swype onto a random number of task on different points of progress without closing.
OTOH, the N900 screen is 3,5" and performs multitasking really nice.
I love my NOTE, but I miss my N900 multitasking system.

height isn't the issue - if you want split screen functionality you need a keyboard that only goes halfway across the screen.
its hard to explain unless you run overskreen yourself.
try opening a notepad and try to type in it with overskreen up.

I currently own a iPad, and a EVO. Last week I picked up a Sprint Galaxy Tab. I really like the android OS compared to IOS, and I like the size of the Tab. But the whole small screen browsing is killing me. I just can't get use to it on the Tab. I have tried all the browsers, but I feel like I am still on my EVO trying to read web sites. Maybe I am missing something, but the browsers just don't render quickly. I'm going to keep messing around with the Tab, but I suspect I am not going to keep it unless browsing improves.
Sounds like you should try adjusting the lcd density. Lowering this setting from the stock 240 will shrink things down so you can see more. You'll have to root the device to do so, but if that's your only worry, it's easily dealt with.
You'll find tutorials here for every step of the process and it'll get you on your way to modding too.

I have an iPad and a samsung vibrant...I'm getting the galaxy tab tonight and a little worried about the browsing viewing size too...As far as the speed you can disable flash and things will speed up.
I have a Galaxy S too. To me, there's no comparison between the two when it comes to browsing readability. The 3x larger display (yes, 3 times larger, as well as 3" bigger) combined with the extra resolution makes a HUGE impact on readability.
Bit of a price to be paid in rendering speed due to the extra pixels, but well worth it.
Much as I loved my SGS, I can barely stand to use it for more than voice calls and quick email checks now. I'm ruined from browsing on it.

Οn the go browsing shouldn't be that demanding, after all it isn't that bad!! Its far better than a cell phone and big enough to read without getting tired! In addition you are capable download/upload files easily, see flash and almost everything a netbook can do. + hope for future upgrade for even better buttery-smooth browsing... (i guess)

Hi everyone, I'm Rob and I'm an iPad user......
I'm thinking about getting rid of the iPad due to the complete ballache of getting media onto the thing (via the hateful iTunes), the ridiculous Apple locking down of apps and having to jailbreak it to do what I want. The last straw is Apple stopping you from using iBooks to access bought content if the iPad is jailbroken which worries me as to what they will do next...
Now, I have a Milestone running Cyanogen Gingerbread and it is great but I'm wondering what happens if I log into my Google account on both devices at the same time. What happens with the apps, can I use them on both devices, will they appear on both devices if I install from the Marketplace? If I delete one from my phone, will it delete form the Tab? So many questions
Has anyone done the same thnig and have you regretted it?
Normally Apps are associated with the Ident number of the Phone, which is how developers get round individuals using a single license on multiple devices.

I've not found that at all thus far.
I have several Android devices, all linked to the same account, and all running mostly the same apps. The only times they don't, are when there is another level of activation (e.g. CoPilot).
Google do provide a mechanism for developers to lock down their applications to a single device if they wish (see here), but I've yet to encounter such an application.

I can't remember the last time I switched on my i-Pad.

I love the iPad itself and hardly ever switch on the laptop but it is Apples attitude to the user that if you don't want to conform to their way, you are to be stopped and treated like a criminal.
Also, with the Tab, I'll be able to copy and paste movies, music and photos onto it easily from my NAS. The iPad photos are reduced in size when copying over. I have 20Gb of family photos and want the full size version rather than a cut down version as a portable backup.

I'm a former Ipad user and what I can say is you will miss the polish.
Things I hate about my tab
1. Browser
2. Youtube app
3. Picture app
4. It plays multiple audio sources at the same time. The ipad would phase one source out should you play something else.
5. No audio controls in the notification bar
Thinks I love about my tab
1. Email
2. Downloading media directly to the device
3. Torrent apps - love that I can dl directly to the device.
4. Form factor - I never read a thing on my ipad, I found it to large to use in bed whereas the tab is perfect.
5. Customization of the os - the things you don't like you can change.
In the end the ipad is a better consumer product, the galaxy tab is still running software designed for a phone. While it is a strong contender it won't be fair to judge the tab until it gets apps designed specificly for it and a proper os.

I was in the same boat - former iPad user. I have to say that the iPad certainly is more polished as a tablet (too many times Galaxy Tab acts like a giant phone), but I wound never go back. The size, the customization, and ability to do anything I want with it is a huge plus for me.
I do hope that at some point we will get a good port of Honeycomb, but not holding my breath. Gingerbread sure would be nice though, running it now on my Nexus One and I really like it.
you can have all your purchased apps on every device that meets the software requirements, as long as every device has the same gmail account on them.
and for the ipad....
what I love about my Gtab is the size, as other had mentioned, it's perfect for reading and holding with one hand
Im kindly sad that Samsung is going to the 10.1 inches race, although that's much better for browsing webpages than 7 inches.
In my Opinion (IMO) you should consider the LG Optimus pad if you want the best of both worlds, the size is smaller than the ipad (8.9") but at the same time is better for portability and reading like the Gtab
I agree the best device will be the LG tablet simply for the form factor.
I recall only bringing my ipad to work and using it at home. The tab goes everywhere because it fits in a pocket.
On another note if you get a gtab don't get the cdma version, its barely supported by the xda community.

I think it's the other way around. The iPad's own resolution is low, so regular youtube videos look good. But the G-Tab's higher resolution makes regular youtube videos look bad. If you choose "HQ" streams in youtube, the videos look fine on the G-Tab.
The Tab is 1024x600 whereas the iPad is 1024x768 so the iPad is higher res.

It's called Onskreen Cornerstone and provides a split screen: a big main window (2/3 in width/landscape) and two smaller ones (horizontally split rest of the screen). Pretty cool, you have the choice of using he whole real estate for one app or if you want to use the two additional small (fixed) windows. Apps can be swapped between the three windows.
Apps in Android are each running in a separate VM so this will apparently only show three VMs in different windows.

Yeah, but how funny it is to run it on a 4" screen phone. You get to have two 1" windows to play with and a larger 2" window. Just your index finger alone would cover half of the 1" window. Have fun navigating with your finger while you squint your eyes retentlessly.

LMAO at that article, especially on the fast incoming call response point.
Jesus, we need you, again.
Some good points but other points are "trying too hard." Like the fast call response. I'm sure that comes in handy when iOS and Android go Battle WP7 in the Windows Phone challenge and they want to see who can pick up first.
Also this one:
5. Improved text input and spell-checking
The soft keyboard in Android 4.0 makes text input even faster and more accurate. To fix misspelled words more easily, Android 4.0 adds a spell-checker that locates and underlines errors and suggests replacement words. With one tap, you can choose from multiple spelling suggestions, delete a word, or add it to the dictionary. You can even tap to see replacement suggestions for words that are spelled correctly. For specialized features or additional languages, you can now download and install third-party dictionaries, spell-checkers, and other text services.
Click to collapse
Dear God. Let's not even talk about how BAD Android text input was to begin with. In 2.0/2.1 we didn't have multitouch. You can't even type fast. The spell check and autocorrection was horrendous. Gingerbread finally brought multitouch but the autocorrection was still eh at best.
ICS makes it a LOT better, but I swear the iOS keyboard knows me better. I say this as an iPod Touch and Android owner. There are other keyboards that outdo Android's ICS keyboard if you want a good typer. Smart Keyboard Pro for example is amazing. The ICS keyboard is still stupid in that I'm forced to insert a space after I pick one of their suggestions. Smart Keyboard Pro lets me customize those features and choose when to insert an auto space, etc. If it weren't for all the clunky Android stock keyboards, we wouldn't invest so much time into developing 20 billion keyboards such as Swype, SlideIT, Swiftkey, 8pen, and some other ridiculous input methods.
The iOS keyboard set a standard in terms of soft keyboard input. It took Android 2 years to figure out how to get a decent keyboard out the door, and it still pales in many ways. I'm glad we've improved, but in no way can you say the ICS keyboard is a definitive winner. There's nothing about it that kills the iOS keyboard...yet.
there are more than 10 reasons^^ but in some points the article isn't correct.
Android is much more open and it's open source.
you don't need mac to develop apps.
If you want to develop Android stuff. get the free SDK and start.
With root you can do everything.
Android: Wanna share Apps and stuff? no problem.
IOS: Wanna share Apps? jailbreak^^
tethered jailbreak? Oh my ios crashed. I have to get to my pc to reboot xDD
And IOS isn't faster than Android. If you have a 700$ Android dualcore phone, there'll be no lags.
If you like the ios interface get an iphone if you like android interface get an android device. This is a question of taste.

Sorry but even a latest gen dual core Android phone like SGS2 doesn't feel as fast as an old iPhone 1 did. It's because of the difference in design philosophy. Read more about it:
http://androidandme.com/2011/12/news/android-may-never-be-as-smooth-as-ios-says-ex-googler/
I don't think I'll ever return to iPhones unless they start coming pre-jailbroken, but I miss the smoothness of the UI so much.

Agreed, my SGS2 tweaked whether its CM7 or CM9 lags behind my friends' iPhone 4Ses. Granted that's not a dealbreaker to me, but it certainly is something that's annoyed me since Day 1. I don't know about an iPhone 2G, but my iPod Touch 4G isn't that fast once jailbroken. If unjailbroken my iPod Touch 4G definitely looks smoother than my SGS2.
Dual core is nice, and it may mean my apps launch super fast, but it doesn't take a dual core phone to activate the camera quickly (just look at Windows Phones)
Hmm well I don't really know about what lag you guys are talking, as my sgs2 with the latest cm9 build is just butter smooth.. Even when scrolling thought a 300 message long sms conversation or going thought all the contacts.. same goes for the app drawer or homescreen, so hey what lags?!
But then I don't have an iPhone to compare it directly, it just feels smooth to me..

So what are you doing here in SGS2 section?
Get an iPhone and jailbreak it
While I may not necessarily agree with all those listed in the article; I think it is extremely incorrect to say that the SGS2 or any other equivalent/better Android phones aren't AT LEAST as fast as an iPhone 4S.
I understand an individual may incorrectly perceive it to be slower, but it really isn't.
Run MIUI-only or a similar launcher, and you'll see why it "feels" faster..
You guys are nuts...iOS is not fast. It seems so cause of the transitions which makes it look smooth and your brain perceives it as fast. If you could turn off the transition animation, you can see it see how slow it is.
Android needs to polish its transition animations a bit better or maybe make everything hardware accelerated!

Not so much jealous, just they probably had iStuff forever, then jump to android and wish they had stuck with iStuff, so they try and self justify to themselves they infact had made a good choice.
It comes to taste, and what you want from a phone. They will be compared, but at the end of the day, both have there equal amount of pros and cons.
Hey, I also sent this from my Galaxy S2 using Tapatalk..

Well said.....
I have something to add . . . i have used both phones and playing a 1080p movie which is the size of 9GB is damn slow on the iphone 4s compared to playing it smoothly on the galaxy s2.
BTW the movie is Dark Knight.
I like the ICS.
But i am not complaining.
After all To each is own...
I think considering what andriod is running especially on our sgs2s, it handles and flows amazingly well, with ios it really is simply a structure of applications ready to launch, ok notifications push fairly reliably but not without problems and apps load smoothly and all run in a similar fluid guided designed way. If you load up ios with lots of jailbreak activities that try to get the phone closer to what android is doing for you, the iphone starts to run slower and laggier yet still doesn't bring you the freedom and choice that we have on our androids, the problem is most people want a simple hit the app and play type control and don't need the complete cuatomised world of android, for instance my wife loves her ipad and it suits her perfectly in its nice guided way, I wouldn't say ics brings anything more than gb did to android, yet perhaps it brings a little more guided ability to bridge the gap from android to ios. If all phones were the same it would be a terribly boring world, each have there strengths, if I could afford to own them all I would.
What about as compared to Windows Phone 7.5??

Then there must be many people that are jealous of Android owners.
Sorry but even a latest gen dual core Android phone like SGS2 doesn't feel as fast as an old iPhone 1 did.

Check out the video on verge review, the multitasking is horribly slow and painful to watch. Can someone verify the performance of multitasking?
http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/15/3243546/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review
I also wanted to check with people who has the Note 10.1 if the device is actually so slow.
Verge video: http://youtu.be/sNkKc81Ug34?t=2m50s
Start at 2:50 to check how much it lags. Can someone try the same in his note and reply.
cheers!

I just tried exactly what you see in the youtube video.
Yes, there is a little little Lag, but not as horrible as it was shown there.
There was a little system update, the first time i started my Note. Maybe this fixed it.

It's lag in the sense that it takes a second initially for what you've written to be displayed. It captures what you're doing immediately the lag is in having it appear. There's some bugs in the s/w because there's a hell of a lot going on behind the scenes that's never been implemented before. Hopefully Samsung cleans them up with updates.
The Verge was pretty tough on the Note. TW is a love/hate proposition and if you hate it you really should skip the Note completely. It's what's tying everything together so you'll lose multi-view and other features if you run a vanilla ROM. I do disagree with their conclusion that's it's a Tab 2 with a pen. It's nothing like the original G-Tab in performance, the display, version of TW, materials, or feel in the hand. I have them side-by-side and you really notice a difference (for the better). Bottom line is if you're not in to the benefits of multi-view or the S-Pen and just want to use the Note like a typical Android tablet it may not be the best choice. Especially at a starting price of $499.

More like a millisec in lag.
You know, those guys of the Verge did some kind of silly gestures and they did it so fast... I don't think anybody will do that kind of stuff in a regular use...

They drew squiggles and tried scrolling the browser up and down. If that's too extreme for the Note, then that's pretty sad.
Jellybean will fix all that and make it smooth like butter.
"Project apple" in order to get the same smoothenss as ipad..

Verge is basically an apple fellatio shop. I think they'd lose half their audience if they had a bad review of an apple product or a good review of any apple competitors.
For example:
Galaxy S3 = 8.5
iPad = 9.3
One X = 8.4
Macbook Air: 8.8
Thinkpad X1 carbon: 7.5

Can you write on one side (using SPen) and scroll a web page on the other side (with a finger), in the same time?
Thx.
Yes and no. It is true that when having applications side by side the context switch takes a moment. But it doesn't feel like the tablet can't keep up. In fact if you use a floating S-Note window there's none of this lag. Even if you have several floating windows plus a floating video plus two applications side by side the tablet is still totally responsive. There seems to be plenty of horsepower, so it's unclear why there is this delay with side by side context switch.

I agree with this. Playing a 1080P MKV video in Pop up play and resizing it and moving it around the screen causes absolutely no lag or stuttering. I'm guessing (hoping) that any lag that's happening in side-by-side views will be corrected via updates. It's certainly not the h/w (CPU and/or RAM) that's causing it.

Yes and no again. Only one window receives input at a given time. However, both applications do run simultaneously. E.g. if you have flash video running in the browser window and you switch to the note window the flash video will continue playing without stuttering when you scribble in the note window. There is a blue line at the bottom of the window that currently receives input.
BTW the verge guy also missed the fact that the keyboard can indeed be switched to handwriting (or voice)

I hope so, but if there's one thing I've learned about mobile devices over the last couple of years, it's this: **Never buy a device on the promise of future software updates.**

Very true. Never get a product thinking about future upgrades. I wonder how XDA devs would make use of the S-Pen in their customer roms.
Samsung promised today, at the NYC conference, that n8000 will recive JB.
I wanted to get the tablet, but I am not very sure now.
I will probably wait for 2nd version as I think it could have been much better. I don't want 7-inchers like Nexus7 which basically is just a e-reader with Tegra3. I think they couldn't optimize the software yet. And A15 SoCs like Exynos 5 is very near, I think it would be foolish to spend on even a quad core A9. Very much interested on the new midgard T604 GPU.
I am also pissed about some of their product design philosophy:
1. Why replace the default mail client?
2. PCWorld mentioned that you can't attach anything in outgoing gmail messages. The only attachment option there is for the Gallery, which means that you can't take notes (or create a document in the Polaris Office app) and then send it via your Gmail account anywhere else. What kind of screwed-up policy is that?
3. S Planner instead of default calendar. When google already creates something for you, why change it when you can't make it better? You waste time and money to develop something which is worse than the free app you receive from google? What sort of product managers approve such thing?
4. Those icons that Samsung uses look so cartoonish now. It's been a long time now, I think we deserve a change in basic layout. They should bring something fresh, it's just so stale. I am not going to compare to Sense 4/4.1 as it's a totally different discussion.
5. Why have so many useless widgets when I see it is causing a lag. There is obvious drop is framerate when there are many widgets in the homescreen.
6. Display resolution is not on my top priority, but would be for many other people.
7. Someone drop that fuc^^ng blip-blip sound. I know we should be able to disable it. My point is why have something which is irritating for many people.
Don't Samsung take feedback from users or from forums? Ok, so you want to skin the device and differentiate it, fine. We can get the idea behind having their own identity and their own apps. But what is the point to use inferior choice when you have something clearly better available for free? You don't want to use stock. Ok, good. then make something more refined. I was so excited about the S-Pen. It looks good, S-Note also looks very decent. But some other things don't look so promising.
/big rant
On the Engadget review
Mutlitasking seems fast. and they taxed the processor with a lot of windows open.
the verge is very biased site. If it is not an apple product forget it.
even when the theverge authors were at engadget same ****, they were biased.
even slashgear multitasking is way way faster than theverge
