Hi everyone, I'm Rob and I'm an iPad user......
I'm thinking about getting rid of the iPad due to the complete ballache of getting media onto the thing (via the hateful iTunes), the ridiculous Apple locking down of apps and having to jailbreak it to do what I want. The last straw is Apple stopping you from using iBooks to access bought content if the iPad is jailbroken which worries me as to what they will do next...
Now, I have a Milestone running Cyanogen Gingerbread and it is great but I'm wondering what happens if I log into my Google account on both devices at the same time. What happens with the apps, can I use them on both devices, will they appear on both devices if I install from the Marketplace? If I delete one from my phone, will it delete form the Tab? So many questions
Has anyone done the same thnig and have you regretted it?
Normally Apps are associated with the Ident number of the Phone, which is how developers get round individuals using a single license on multiple devices.

I've not found that at all thus far.
I have several Android devices, all linked to the same account, and all running mostly the same apps. The only times they don't, are when there is another level of activation (e.g. CoPilot).
Google do provide a mechanism for developers to lock down their applications to a single device if they wish (see here), but I've yet to encounter such an application.
Regards,
Dave

Okay, fair point Dave.
My findings are based mostly on the Medical Apps I have installed and yes, Co-Pilot as one other.
Thanks for the replies chaps. I think the iPad is going to be replaced.

Now that.... I can easily concur with...
I can't remember the last time I switched on my i-Pad.
... and I'm looking forward to getting the New Galaxy Tab 2 to add to my Samsung collection (Galaxy S & Tab)
I love the iPad itself and hardly ever switch on the laptop but it is Apples attitude to the user that if you don't want to conform to their way, you are to be stopped and treated like a criminal.
Also, with the Tab, I'll be able to copy and paste movies, music and photos onto it easily from my NAS. The iPad photos are reduced in size when copying over. I have 20Gb of family photos and want the full size version rather than a cut down version as a portable backup.

I'm a former Ipad user and what I can say is you will miss the polish.
Things I hate about my tab
1. Browser
2. Youtube app
3. Picture app
4. It plays multiple audio sources at the same time. The ipad would phase one source out should you play something else.
5. No audio controls in the notification bar
Thinks I love about my tab
1. Email
2. Downloading media directly to the device
3. Torrent apps - love that I can dl directly to the device.
4. Form factor - I never read a thing on my ipad, I found it to large to use in bed whereas the tab is perfect.
5. Customization of the os - the things you don't like you can change.
In the end the ipad is a better consumer product, the galaxy tab is still running software designed for a phone. While it is a strong contender it won't be fair to judge the tab until it gets apps designed specificly for it and a proper os.

Oh the app is okay but I felt the ipad offered higher resolutions. The videos always looked sharp as they do on a computer. On my tab a lot of videos look blurry.

I hated ipad YouTube app it would always stutter when playing videos while the tab is smooth sailing. I do agree that stock browser sucks though.

I was in the same boat - former iPad user. I have to say that the iPad certainly is more polished as a tablet (too many times Galaxy Tab acts like a giant phone), but I wound never go back. The size, the customization, and ability to do anything I want with it is a huge plus for me.
I do hope that at some point we will get a good port of Honeycomb, but not holding my breath. Gingerbread sure would be nice though, running it now on my Nexus One and I really like it.
you can have all your purchased apps on every device that meets the software requirements, as long as every device has the same gmail account on them.
and for the ipad....
what I love about my Gtab is the size, as other had mentioned, it's perfect for reading and holding with one hand
Im kindly sad that Samsung is going to the 10.1 inches race, although that's much better for browsing webpages than 7 inches.
In my Opinion (IMO) you should consider the LG Optimus pad if you want the best of both worlds, the size is smaller than the ipad (8.9") but at the same time is better for portability and reading like the Gtab
I agree the best device will be the LG tablet simply for the form factor.
I recall only bringing my ipad to work and using it at home. The tab goes everywhere because it fits in a pocket.
On another note if you get a gtab don't get the cdma version, its barely supported by the xda community.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Good to hear from ex iPad users who don't regret going to the Tab.
Already being an Android user (G1, Magic, Milestone), I know what to expect from the OS itself and love the customisability and community efforts, just wish I had the coding skills that some people on XDA have.

I think it's the other way around. The iPad's own resolution is low, so regular youtube videos look good. But the G-Tab's higher resolution makes regular youtube videos look bad. If you choose "HQ" streams in youtube, the videos look fine on the G-Tab.
The Tab is 1024x600 whereas the iPad is 1024x768 so the iPad is higher res.

Hmmm. but the size is different? 7" vs. 10"? Perhaps then it's the density that makes the difference?
I'm just curious - with tablets as popular as they are - and with nice big screens, do you think there is any chance Android will provide any sort of windowing system in the future (so you can see more than one app at a time)? I think that would be awesome on tablets...
Any thoughts??
There is always that onskreen thing that is being developed... i heard conflicting sides to why it's not available on android, but itsounds like google is trying to displace apple instead of overwhelming it by showing that tablets can be more than entertainment..
Hmm, haven't heard of Onskreen - I just looked it up and it looks awesome! Has any OEM actually used it yet?? It says that it IS for Andorid, from what I read!
Well, there are several reasons why onskreen cornerstone is having a hard time launching. But here are the main reasons.
(1) Onskreen wants to make a lot of money out of this. So, they want to go through the formal route of having google and tablet manufacturers incorporate this in the updates.
(2) Unfortunately for onskreen, google and tablet manufacturers are not convinced that people would want this feature on their tablets.
About #2, look at the success of the ipad and ipad 2. And you couldn't even multitask on the ipad. Yet, apple is selling them by the tens of millions. Google and android tablet manufacturers think people don't want multitasking on their tablets. These mega companies are trying to catch up to the ipad's success by tailing it. And that means copying how ipad works.
Last there was any info on the development of cornerstone, google and some manufacturers were making onskreen take surveys to prove that anyone at all would like this feature on their tablet. It's sad, really, that these mega companies are perfectly happy tailing apple instead of trying something new to beat it.
If my tablet had a twenty inch screen I would want Xmonad, never mind that. At 10.1 inches Android is good enough at multi-tasking. Maybe if Android overtakes Windows PC someday in the next billion years, we'll get windowing.

No way... imagine being able to watch a YouTube video while browsing Tapatalk. Or open GTalk while watching a movie. A tiling window manager for our TF would be really awesome. Not to mention I hook my TF up to a 24" monitor or 40+" TV for doing development work on (ConnectBot SSH'd into a VPS running vim), which would really really benefit from this.

+1 - my thoughts exactly!
Unfortunately it seems running eMMC Ubuntu is the only solution to this at the moment, and without hardware accel it's definitely not the quickest solution.
That being said, I run a full dev environment (with VPN) on my Transformer and it's incredibly convenient.
Also, battery life in Ubuntu is incredible! Surprisingly so for me anyway..

I am a _very_ heavy multi tasker and overloader, as in making my laptop want to halt and catch fire kind of multitasking. At a minimal we're talking code compiling, music streaming, and 3+ IM tabs. while surfing the web. If I have a 24" or 40+" to work with, I'll want them each arranged in tiles automatically like XMonad can.
Over the years I have used the following: 15", 19", 22" wide, 10.1" wide, and 15.4" or w/e the wide format is. Resolutions from SVGA to HD. You know what I found when I was using a 10.1" netbook? Most of the time ALT+TAB was more effective with so little screen space. Whether I was reading or writing, watching or chatting, there just wasn't enough screen screen space for more than 1 and 1/3 programs on a 10.1" at 1024x600. I'd rather ALT+TAB than use smaller windows. The TF101's resolution on the 15.x" laptop wasn't so much better, that I would expect the same resolution on 10.1" to be a serious improvement. To be honest I never notied that big a serious gain until I hit 1920x1080 on a 22" wide screen!!!
At work, I run tmux locally (it's like screen) and connect to dtach'd shells on the development server; at home I skip the SSH part. Chrome and Pidgin being the primary GUI needs that matter and corrisponding to Opera Mobile and IMO+jTalk on my TF101.
So I don't really miss adding the 20" Dell on my desktop to it most times. It is a short comming that I can't hook up my TF to my 22" wide at home and have xterm and chrome side by side, the way my netbook and laptop could, and being able to use xrandr to choose if I wanted a mirror or a second screen, or even to make the big screen the only screen. But hey, I can't really complain because most of the time I would just be filling it with a huge ass xterm. For most people that use a tiling wm, probably the same. Regular users have more need of it and regular users are not going to use their TF the way I do.
It was a nice to have feature not a requirement -- because if it was, I wouldn't have been using anything less mobile than my desktop PC to start with! I just don't need that to be productive...maybe if I spent my job in photoshop instead of vim, idk.
edit: if it was to a vote, I'd rather have better access to things like Chrome's debugging tools than multiple windows. Then I wouldn't need my workstation every now and then!

But remember - as with any windowing system, you would always have the option to run any app in full screen mode.... It would just be nice to have the option to view mutiple apps at once in certain situations... I don't see any drawbacks - just advantages!
The biggest problem I currently have is that when I go back to the home sceeen from some apps, the app actually closes, so there is no way to multitask.... If I had multiple windows on teh screen at once, I wouldn't have that issue...
Currently, I guess it's up to the app to determine if it stays open when going back to the home screen?? It just seems like I don't have the option to multitask all apps....

Too funny! I would like the option as well to view both programs similar to cascade in windows. The only thing close I have ever seen is the dual browser whcih is ok but obviously only for internet pages. I truly think android needs a couple more software iterations. However I also don't think eclipse would let u do half of a screen for example because they have specific dimensions and sizes built in. Much like compatibility mode, if the app could default to a smaller size then it could be possible but probably wouldn't look natural.

I can't really see the development efforts and the major headscrew for the user expirerence as being worth it until we have the Android PC where most people have a Dell or an eMachine on a desk. Maybe someday if Windows 8 flops but not today w/o a freaky fork of Android.
A great plus of Android to me, I have almost all the power my BSD and Linux based systems have, everything I need (personally) to be productive, some useful propritary apps I might not get with FreeBSD, plus it is so easy to use that my mother can use Gingerbread and Froyo. We have had computers for nearly 20 years and she has used Windows XP since 2001 ---- and still struggles with multiple windows, copying and pasting, browsing/saving files, etc. Holy crap, I think it took 7 years for her to stop asking me, "Left or right click". Google has done an awesome job IMHO.
That is just an awesome combo, plus I could probably use x forwarding/vnc magic and get a 1280x1080 GNU/Linux desktop on my big screen, and use a local VNC connection when getting up to go. Maybe even resize it after rather than scroll around. So I can technically have it if I wanted or needed it for productivity, just not with Android apps.
@the multitasking part, usually you can use the copy buffer as an accumulator when that happens. I tend to use Home or the "Multitasking" buttons / ALT+Tab depending on what I'm doing, and rarely have a problem unless I take too long to switch back or launch something memory intensive. Also another reason I switched from TexTab to Tablet Talk, hehe. Most apps that I use don't cause me troubles and those that do on occasion (TeamSpeak) wouldn't if designed properly for the life cycle of an Android application. Then there are some where the activity just dies out, like MoboPlayer lol.

Spidey, fact is, I'd get a lot of use out of a tiling wm on Android. I know we can go without it, certainly, that's why I'm still using my TF for development! The TF offers so many advantages over a traditional notebook that the loss is worth it, but that doesn't make it useless. There are many, many uses for it, especially for IM and video. I suppose we could probably get IM working with window fragments... I'll have to look into it for my #1 l33t IM app! Also tiling things like connectbot and the browser would be great, for so many reasons. It may not be perfect on such a small screen, but it would be useful most of the time.

He tells that to everyone that even hints at Android not being perfect.
Android sends a signal to an app when you leave it, telling it that you left. It sits there for a while, and if you don't enter it again for so long, Android sends it a destroy signal, and it's up to the author of the app to save the current state so it can be resumed next time it's opened. If it doesn't behave like this, then yea, it's because of the author of the app (or it's too complicated an app to save/restore the state... eg imagine a 3d game).

Thanks for the info! What I've been noticing thuough is that when I try to multitask certain apps, they wont even show in my recents list at all (like tthere is NO chance for multitasking...). From what your saying, it sounds like all apps shoudl be able to multitask to some point, but that's not what I'm seeing... I'm wondering if it's just an issue with the custom ROM/kernel I'm using...
Thanks again! Obviously, not a huge deal, but kinda annoying sometimes.
Regardless, I would NEVER even think of switching back to Apple devices (gave the iPad to the wife) - Android really is so much more powerful!

The only time I've seen this happen is because of launching one app from another. eg if you click a web link within an app and it opens the browser, it won't show both the originating app *and* the browser for some reason, it only shows one (I forget which).

Yes, we get that. But I think the point the OP was hammering home was the fact that the Note is in its prime when it comes to handling multitasking....whereas other devices with different architecture/screen/resolution might not do that great of a job.

I know, this is very sad. I went and watched some N900 reviews after you made this comment and WOW, I feel ripped off, our phone is over 10x more powerful than that thing gpu and all.
The only (that I can think of) in regards to why we don't have this level of multitasking would be because of **Battery Life**
I dunno though, I would still like the option!

i wouldn't say that at all. if people can be productive on their iPhones, and our screen is 2.5x larger, having the ability to split screen has tremendous potential.
it would be fantastic to say, web browse on one side and take notes on the other, or sms info to others. one big problem with this, in my quick testing, is that the keyboard is just way too big.
ive been saying for ages, we need a keyboard where you can select what percent of screen width to use, much like samsungs one handed keyboard

Really practical. The very day you could see the real multitasking on your device you would love it to the point of answering yourself how in the hell has been able to survive on your life until these moment. Because it not consist on wacht a random number of videos at the same time but on to be able to swype onto a random number of task on different points of progress without closing.
OTOH, the N900 screen is 3,5" and performs multitasking really nice.
I love my NOTE, but I miss my N900 multitasking system.

I also miss the multitasking from My N900. That phone had so much better multitasking than android. I hope that one day android will be close to that.

height isn't the issue - if you want split screen functionality you need a keyboard that only goes halfway across the screen.
its hard to explain unless you run overskreen yourself.
try opening a notepad and try to type in it with overskreen up.
Dude i really like your videos!! big fan already , i always show yr galaxy note cool videos to my friends and guess what , one of them traded his S2 for a G.Note !!

Check out the video on verge review, the multitasking is horribly slow and painful to watch. Can someone verify the performance of multitasking?
http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/15/3243546/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review
I also wanted to check with people who has the Note 10.1 if the device is actually so slow.
Verge video: http://youtu.be/sNkKc81Ug34?t=2m50s
Start at 2:50 to check how much it lags. Can someone try the same in his note and reply.
cheers!

I just tried exactly what you see in the youtube video.
Yes, there is a little little Lag, but not as horrible as it was shown there.
There was a little system update, the first time i started my Note. Maybe this fixed it.

It's lag in the sense that it takes a second initially for what you've written to be displayed. It captures what you're doing immediately the lag is in having it appear. There's some bugs in the s/w because there's a hell of a lot going on behind the scenes that's never been implemented before. Hopefully Samsung cleans them up with updates.
The Verge was pretty tough on the Note. TW is a love/hate proposition and if you hate it you really should skip the Note completely. It's what's tying everything together so you'll lose multi-view and other features if you run a vanilla ROM. I do disagree with their conclusion that's it's a Tab 2 with a pen. It's nothing like the original G-Tab in performance, the display, version of TW, materials, or feel in the hand. I have them side-by-side and you really notice a difference (for the better). Bottom line is if you're not in to the benefits of multi-view or the S-Pen and just want to use the Note like a typical Android tablet it may not be the best choice. Especially at a starting price of $499.

More like a millisec in lag.
You know, those guys of the Verge did some kind of silly gestures and they did it so fast... I don't think anybody will do that kind of stuff in a regular use...

They drew squiggles and tried scrolling the browser up and down. If that's too extreme for the Note, then that's pretty sad.
Jellybean will fix all that and make it smooth like butter.

Verge is basically an apple fellatio shop. I think they'd lose half their audience if they had a bad review of an apple product or a good review of any apple competitors.
For example:
Galaxy S3 = 8.5
iPad = 9.3
One X = 8.4
Macbook Air: 8.8
Thinkpad X1 carbon: 7.5

Can you write on one side (using SPen) and scroll a web page on the other side (with a finger), in the same time?
Thx.
Yes and no. It is true that when having applications side by side the context switch takes a moment. But it doesn't feel like the tablet can't keep up. In fact if you use a floating S-Note window there's none of this lag. Even if you have several floating windows plus a floating video plus two applications side by side the tablet is still totally responsive. There seems to be plenty of horsepower, so it's unclear why there is this delay with side by side context switch.

I agree with this. Playing a 1080P MKV video in Pop up play and resizing it and moving it around the screen causes absolutely no lag or stuttering. I'm guessing (hoping) that any lag that's happening in side-by-side views will be corrected via updates. It's certainly not the h/w (CPU and/or RAM) that's causing it.

Yes and no again. Only one window receives input at a given time. However, both applications do run simultaneously. E.g. if you have flash video running in the browser window and you switch to the note window the flash video will continue playing without stuttering when you scribble in the note window. There is a blue line at the bottom of the window that currently receives input.
BTW the verge guy also missed the fact that the keyboard can indeed be switched to handwriting (or voice)

Very true. Never get a product thinking about future upgrades. I wonder how XDA devs would make use of the S-Pen in their customer roms.
Samsung promised today, at the NYC conference, that n8000 will recive JB.
I wanted to get the tablet, but I am not very sure now.
I will probably wait for 2nd version as I think it could have been much better. I don't want 7-inchers like Nexus7 which basically is just a e-reader with Tegra3. I think they couldn't optimize the software yet. And A15 SoCs like Exynos 5 is very near, I think it would be foolish to spend on even a quad core A9. Very much interested on the new midgard T604 GPU.
I am also pissed about some of their product design philosophy:
1. Why replace the default mail client?
2. PCWorld mentioned that you can't attach anything in outgoing gmail messages. The only attachment option there is for the Gallery, which means that you can't take notes (or create a document in the Polaris Office app) and then send it via your Gmail account anywhere else. What kind of screwed-up policy is that?
3. S Planner instead of default calendar. When google already creates something for you, why change it when you can't make it better? You waste time and money to develop something which is worse than the free app you receive from google? What sort of product managers approve such thing?
4. Those icons that Samsung uses look so cartoonish now. It's been a long time now, I think we deserve a change in basic layout. They should bring something fresh, it's just so stale. I am not going to compare to Sense 4/4.1 as it's a totally different discussion.
5. Why have so many useless widgets when I see it is causing a lag. There is obvious drop is framerate when there are many widgets in the homescreen.
6. Display resolution is not on my top priority, but would be for many other people.
7. Someone drop that fuc^^ng blip-blip sound. I know we should be able to disable it. My point is why have something which is irritating for many people.
Don't Samsung take feedback from users or from forums? Ok, so you want to skin the device and differentiate it, fine. We can get the idea behind having their own identity and their own apps. But what is the point to use inferior choice when you have something clearly better available for free? You don't want to use stock. Ok, good. then make something more refined. I was so excited about the S-Pen. It looks good, S-Note also looks very decent. But some other things don't look so promising.
/big rant
On the Engadget review
Mutlitasking seems fast. and they taxed the processor with a lot of windows open.
the verge is very biased site. If it is not an apple product forget it.
even when the theverge authors were at engadget same ****, they were biased.
even slashgear multitasking is way way faster than theverge
10 inch is great for multi-window multitasking especially considering the lack of tablet optimized Android apps. But is it available on the Nexus 10 out of box considering Samsung's own Note 10.1 does split-screen, if not can it be upgraded with no root or in any other way?
Could be a dealbreaker. The 2,56k Nexus 10 is perfect for multitasking and lacking such awesomeness would be disappointing.
Something like Galaxy Note? It would be great but no mention of it in the reviews.

It's unlikely. The thing with nexus devices is that you need to forget who manufactured it.
Unless the standard android build tree implements a multi windows feature, no nexus device will have it.
It's a trade off, because devices like my S3 and the Note etc come with fantastic Samsung features like the notes app, multi window, smart stay, additional code licences and such, but you sacrifice update frequency.
The point here is that this device gets pure, unadulterated, Android, and all the features (or lack thereof) that comes with it.
Either way, ill be buying one, and waiting for ParanoidAndroid to come along so I can get rid of the crappy Phablet UI, which I personally think is a mistake on a device like this.

That's too bad. The crowd clearly wants multitasking and the 10" screen and high resolution is fitting for split screen, a big hit and miss by Google. Or maybe Samsung wants to keep it in house? Disappointing either way, splitting the screen into 4:3 for Chrome and 1:3 for Twitter/chat/music/calculator/notepad etc. would give enough pixels for both. To not have that option on most tablets is kinda shocking. What else do you wish to use the big screen for if not comfort?
I'm on GB on my phone. Is there a simple way to switch between apps on JB?

Yeh, the problem, is that Samsung's multi-window feature is just that, Samsung's. They paid and spent the time to develop it in house, it's their own functionality, it cost them time and effort and is a selling point for their own devices such as the Galaxy Note 2.
As for JB, there is the "recent" menu, which is usually surfaced as an on screen button on some devices, or a press and hold of home on others, for switching apps. It's really no different to that of GB, except that it gives thumbnails of the apps instead of just icons.
Samsung cheated their way to multi-screen view... only one app is in the foreground, so it's not really multi-tasking. They did a serious hack job of the android os in order to make it happen. If you want it done right, wait for Google to do it.

maybe it would be possible to run an app at qhd resolution or so as a widget on your home screen. you could put 2 or 3 on the 10 inch screen and just use them all simultaneously. anyone have any idea?

Yeah, but this is a Samsung tab, and as much as it runs "pure Android", they could've easily throw multi-view in and sell it with that feature, it's pretty evident THIS is the device to challenge the iPad, not the Note 10.1.
It also doesn't take a genius at Google to develop split-screen tasking, don't think it requires too many resources either. HW's ready, SW's ready, we are ready. Where's split screen multitasking on the 10" tablets?

If not multi-window... what apps have big tab widgets to split the screen that way?
Mobo player let's you multi screen, when watching a video you can hit the home button and it will bring you to the desktop but have the video playing in a resizeable box... Was actually really nice ,made me want it on all the apps :'(
Sadly, I don't think Google wants multi window functionality in Android. In general, they seem fine with Android for tablets just being a dumb device for media consumption. I think the tablet UI change is an example of Google dumbing down the UI by wasting screen real estate, etc.
Additionally, A developer from Google threatened CyanogenMod when they showed interest in using and improving a 3rd party's implementation of multi window for ICS. Google is worried that supporting multi window will make it harder on app developers because there would be even more size and layout variations that developers would need to test and support.
I personally think it is very important for Google to support this. Windows 8 tablets already have support for multi window.
Back to my original point, a 7" fits Google's current direction of being mostly a dumb device for media consumption. However, 10" tablets needs to be something more than that to justify the price and lack of portability compared to a 7" tablet.
Damn, the new multi-view looks better than ever!

While I agree i dont like the UI on a nexus 7. For example isnt the native apps on a n7 single pane, like gmail on a phone?
On the nexus 10, gmail, talk, email, and the like are all 2 pane applications. My only complaint about the UI on the N10 is that the home back and multitask buttons allways stay in the middle of the screen. i think they should be to one side or the other for easier access with your thumb.
Also i would love to have multi window support on my n10 which is how i came opon this thread, but i will wait for google to implement it. while the different versions of android (touchwiz motoblur etc.) have come a long way none of them are as smooth or operate as clean as stock android. When and if google creates multi window support it will work flawlessly.
