Is there any evidence that the USA is getting a Wifi-only version of the 7.7?
I find it ludacris Verizon wants 699.99 for theirs.. I have no need for the radio built in and the extreme premium they are asking.. I'm itching to have this tablet and don't really want to order it online..
Unless T-mobile is getting the 7.7 with their HSPA+ network support built (I have a T-mobile unlimited data sim dying to get inside a nice tablet).
Any ideas?
Why not order the wifi version from negri? They are a us retailer and very reputable and you can have it in less than a week.
They have it at a very good price

The majority of posters in the 7.7 forum bought their 6800/6810 online. I bought two with no problems. I presume we'll see a small influx of Verizon customers in the coming weeks, though.
But, I mean...what are you going to do? Buy it online or don't get one are your two options if you don't want Verizon's version.
Do any of the 3G versions work on T-mobile's network?
The P6800 does not work on the AWS frequency that T-mobile uses. If T-mobile ever converts its network to use the 1900MHz frequency nationwide it will work but there is no time table released to show if or when that might happen.

To be clear, it will work, but you will only get EDGE (2G) speeds in most of the country. I understand that AWS isn't required in some areas for T-Mobile, but you should expect to surf at EDGE speeds with the P6800.
What he said. Will it work on T-Mobile? Yes. Will the 3G work and be fast? Depending on where you are, probably not...

If the 7.7 does come to the US in any form other than the LTE version, then it will likely ONLY be the wifi version. Carriers don't like all-in-one devices you see... That's why the LTE version doesn't double as a phone.
I'm assuming the LTE version can fall back onto Verizon's 3g network when 4g is not available, and or has a toggle (I would hope) to force 3g instead of 4g?

Don't know about the toggle, but I would assume that, yes, assuming there's no LTE coverage, it will fall back to CDMA2000 or 1xRTT, whichever is available.

Correct, the device switches between CDMA and LTE coverage depending on what is available, and there is the ability to force it to CDMA only.
What i'm concerned about though, is that there's no way to turn off the cellular modem and only use Wifi. I'm assuming that when Wifi is on, the cellular radio is also turned on (even if you don't have a data plan activated on the device) causing it to use more battery by continuously checking for a signal.
Can someone confirm if you can power down the modem seperately from Wifi? I don't see the point in needing a radio always on if you're not even paying for a Verizon plan.

My Droid X turns off the 3g radio when wifi is connected. It would make sense that it worked the same way on the LTE 7.7.

If your phone is still reporting signal bars when connected to Wifi, the radio is still turned on and using juice.

Guess i'll have to go back into verizon and check the settings and see if they are treated seperately. Usually all wireless (cellular and wifi) are treated as a singular on/off switch. Can't usually literally power down the cell chip and keep the Wifi chip on.
Some devices can - but I want to make sure if this one can.

Disabling Packet data will work fine. You can also put it in Airplane mode then just enable the radios you need.

Sure, disabling packet data works, but it's still not disabling the radio or tower hunting. I'll have to try the airplane mode thing, usually you can't have airplane mode ON and turn on other radios on without it pulling it out of airplane mode.
On my LTE version, On the Quick Settings bar there is a Mobile Data button you can select to toggle the mobile data on and off. It is independent of the Wifi.
Also, a nice touch, when you're not connected to WiFi and you go to access a data application such as the browser, it pops up a reminder along with the list of any in range wifi hot spots. You can disable this reminder, but it's a nice to have.

Wifi signal bars, yes. The same signal bars are used for wifi and 4G/3G. When you're in 4G or 3G it has a secondary indicator next to the signal bar.

is there anyway or any application that is out there that will let you browse the web and talk om the phone at the same time?
If you have GSM then you can do that without any special app. If you have CDMA then you can't do that unless you're connected via wifi.
Yup wifi and phone works really well LOL...

Just came out? AFAIK 3G on AT&T's network thats one of the benefits. I believe all 3G smartphones that had web browsing had voice capabilities at the same time... that's part of what 3G on a GSM network creates.
You can talk and surf in AT&T 3G network for sure. I am not sure if it works on T-mobile though. I would think it should, as it looks like it depends on technology and not the network itself!

Yea you can do this only with 3G connection. Cuz you are using E to talk I would assume! And 3G for data...
this is only possible using a GSM network(at&t, t-mobile...etc) without using wifi.
3g makes no difference in this situation.Verizon & Sprint run on CDMA networks and is not possible to "talk & surf" at the same time

Well the commercial is a response commercial to Verizon's ads... so at least in this case they aren't full of crap. Verizon's 3G network is based on EV-DO Rev A. You get the speeds of a 3G GSM connection but you don't get the simul voice/data functionality.

AT&T does not support browse/talk on its Edge network. So if your phone steps down to an Edge connection you lose that ability. AFAIK Edge CAN support the functionality its just that AT&T doesn't support it.
I will check on verizon when I get a chance, but if you look in the Kaiser forum, I showed everyone there in a thread how to get this functionality b'c the carriers (US) usually strip it out to preserve bandwidth. It has to do with the RIL settings in your provisioning xml. beeen a few years, but it is there if you want to dig. Look in kaiser rom development. Also, it has to be cooked in. the provisioning registry changes will always revert back to OEM settings if not cooked in.
It is not a matter of carrier but a matter of technology. Edge and 3G are akin to narrowband and broadband for landlines. Just like you can't talk and surf the web and talk on the phone on dialup but can on DSL. It's simply a matter of bandwidth.
To explain this in a more simple matter, 3g is essentially a CDMA connection. Being that CDMA carriers use said transmission for voice, they cannot use data and voice simultaneously. However, with t-mobile and at&t, voice is transmitted over the GSM radio and a 2nd radio is present which carries the CDMA 3g technology. If said GSM device looses that 3g service and falls back to edge or gprs, the simultaneous voice and data becomes inoperable. The key part to this is that a 2nd radio transmission takes place to allow the simultaneous transmission of both services. I have often wondered, however, why other carriers like sprint and Verizon don't incorporate a 2nd radio in their devices to simultaneously connect two CDMA transmissions similar to how a TIVO/DVR box works with cable/satellite services to allow the viewing of one channel while recording another. This functionality would allow them to compete with the GSM carriers.
cdma gsm
I know that when I used to work for ATTWS (long time ago), they were freaking out about the new carriers rolling in with CDMA (some with hybrid AMPS and D-AMPS 850 mhz spectrum) because, in theory CDMA should wax TDMA's call load significantly. TDMA, at that time could only hold 3 calls per channel. So about (here comes a geeky number) every 6.67 ms the calls on the channel would switch functions. Only one could TX, one could RX, and the other was Idle.... this was all transparent to the caller of course.. CDMA rolls around with the theory that becasue it's data piggy backed on the channel, it would increase their call handling ability 10 fold. Unfortunately theory didn't work out to real work practicality b/c the new PCS CDMA carriers really had about the same call capacity as everyone else.
Now, I've always touted VZW speeds here in my market bc TMO didn't even have 3g here till like 6 months to a year ago.. .and AT&T's 3G was laugable here in Jacksonville...might as well have kept the E or G icons on the phone for as slow as things ran.... HSDPA and UMTS could put a cramp on VZWs claim to speed...as long as they can get it consistent nationwide... I'd be tempted to leave for the right data speeds.....but for now, I'm in love with my overpriced VZW plan because of the coverage, quality, and speed..... who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Sorry for the long post, but it takes a bit to explain it.. (even though most of you know it.)
Thanks,
Nate

Yes my phone shows H when I'm trying to surf and talk. I think since I have a cooked rom, it may have altered my stock internet configuration and proxy settings or something and now it doesnt work.....idunno......thats my guess. Hoping one of you guys have the answer.
Thats definitely the problem make sure proxy is off and your connections setting are going to the MEdiaNet server and that should fix it.
So, i have bugged folks on this forum about getting 3G to work on other carriers, and it turns out - it does work! At first i found out my settings were set to GSM only, but now i also found this weird inconsistency possibly a bug.
If i have Data Off after using 3G or GPRS for some time, when i turn it back on, phone would not connect to data service. After enabling it will simply time out.
I found that if i switch from GSM to WCDMA, and than back, 3G network would connect and work.
I don't know if it's specifically my phone, or a bug, so i'm just throwing it out there.

What carrier are you getting 3G to work? I doubt its working if its anything that doesn't run on tmobiles bands..the icon will come up and stuff but your either getting edge speeds or not getting any connection. I've had this phone show me 3G with full bars and just time out.. I can eveven put in a sim with a sidekick plan or other data plan and it shows 3G but it does not work
Well, i'm overseas and i have used it on Russian carrier Beeline and carriers in two other countries. Now, i do set my connection to WCDMA only, which gives me 3G icon. When i set it to GSM only, i see GPRS icon show up.
So, it does work, i use fring, online radio, google maps. But as far as speed concerned, i have not tested it.
Just ran a speed test using Speedtest.net tool, I get 3951kbps download, and 655 upload
thats 3G

Im pretty sure i read his post correctly he only wants to use 2g and 3g.... however with most people confusing HSPA and HSPA+ i just guessed he was referring to HSPA+
bell mobility's network does not work on edge (2g). it is a 3g network only. the bell version of the phone shows the option to use 2g, but people using a bell sim can only use 3g.
i have the phone unlocked and on the rogers network and while my phone will switch to 2g when rf is very low, i cannot manually set it to lock to 2g with the stock rom. i have flashed to the jm6 rom and this one gives me the option to switch to 2g and lock it in, but i have issues trying to manually switch back to 3g when i do this.
if you are in an office with poor rf strength, try leaving wifi on so that your data connection will not have to work as hard to maintain a connection. thats what i do when i get home and i find it eats less battery.

Yah unfortunately i have a T mobile branded Vibrant so its hard to tell what has been changed between ours and the one for Bell.
I love my new Galaxy S III, but once again I have no way to force HSPA+ only. I need this option while my phone sits in my desk all day. If I can turn LTE off then I can save battery life and still get calls/texts/emails.
STOP IT AT&T, JUST STOP IT!!! Your really starting to really aggravate your customers by not allowing them to select their preferred network.
I want the network mode option in mobile networks:
GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto)
GSM/HSPA (Auto)
HSPA (only)
GSM (only)
STOP taking this off all your phones. Every other GSM carrier in the world allows this except you!!!
I hope ALL developers add this toggle in all the upcoming roms.
Your best bet until this is added/fixed, is to turn on wi-fi mode and turn off the mobile data connection.
That way you still can make calls, and have the wifi as your data, and if its off it wont use as much power as HSPA/LTE.

I think you kind of missed the point...
Let's say your at work all day and you don't use your phone much? Let's say your phone gets 1 bar of LTE and 4 of HSPA+. The signal constantly fluctuates ultimately leading to a dead battery much faster.
Wouldn't it be great to just turn LTE off? That way my phone gets a better signal and uses less battery life. Not to mention, I can still receive calls, texts, and e-mails, whereas airplane mode disables everything.
Wi-Fi isn't available everywhere.
PS: AT&T ain't adding ****, they released their first LTE device in November of 2011 and it also lacked this option.
I think you missed the point as well
The reason for turning on wi-fi is to direct the data connection to something other than the chip used for HSPA/LTE. I'm not looking to use the wi-fi connection as an alternative data source. I'm using it to prevent as much battery drain as possible whenever I am not using the phone.
It essentially IS turning off LTE, but it also is turning off your data, and if you don't have wi-fi then you wont have a data connection, but if you do then you will.
Airplane mode is just taking it a step further and blocking calls as well.
So there's no way to turn off LTE? Even via a 4g/3g toggle from the app store?

Nope, that's not how it worked on the HTC One X... even dialer codes would just reset on exiting. LTE stays on for some stupid reason with ATT.

Then it would be best to turn off the Wi-fi and the Mobile Data connection, the only reason I have the Wi-fi on is if I'm in an area that has it (home, work, at&t hotspot) otherwise it is automatically turned off (I think?).
And I agree completely, I would love that feature, but until that time we have to make due with what we have, this is my solution, it isn't perfect but it works for me.

Then it would be best to turn off the Wi-fi and the Mobile Data connection, the only reason I have the Wi-fi on is if I'm in an area that has it (home, work, at&t hotspot) otherwise it is automatically turned off (I think?).

Yes, but like I said turning off mobile data completely turns off the data connection, whereas with this toggle we can change it to EDGE or HSPA+ only, still having a data connection.
I agree I like turning on edge only when I'm at work and home

I'm just hoping developers starting adding the GSM toggle via Mobile networks in their custom roms.
AT&T NEVER WILL!!!
It could be the sim card. I have a SIM card from 2007. The network toggle still works on my Thrill. Someone put a newer SIM card in their Thrill and the network toggle is gone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326760 post 27

And you hit the nail on the head. It's actually a mix of SIM Card and Radio. What we need is the canadian version of our radio and we will have it back.
Erm would juice defender not fix this? I still get texts and calls but it turns off my data.. plus its free! ( i bought the ultimate though)

i guess technically it could since it turns off everything (Except calls) and turns it all back on every 15 minutes to check if anything was received on Att servers.
But if hes waiting for an important text or something, it would come delayed until juice defender decided to retrieve it.
not a bad idea though.
Here's an idea, since your at a desk all day, invest $1.32 on monoprice into a USB cable and charge your phone...

I believe it just turns off 3g and 4g on verizon. My calls and texts are instant. Also, if you buy the app you can change frequency. Mine syncs every hour or two. It may be different with att since verizon handles their 4g in kind of a silly way.

You mean cycle it twice as much as necessary since AT&T has removed the functionality that's needed? :good:
I started out with USCC on this device. But last week I switched ourn lines over to big red. I noticed that big red forces you to use LTE, with no options under "cellular networks" to select CDMA. Here in Maine, LTE drains your battery 50% faster than CDMA, and data is wonky. It tends to be slower than CDMA, or at least feels slower because it is constantly switching between the 2 or hanging in limbo.
My phone was set to CDMA on USCC, and even after switching to Verizon, I'm still on CDMA. My question is, if I return to stock LP will it force me into LTE -with no choice of switching back to CDMA? So far, Marshmallow has been a huge disappointment on my phone.

Just go into hidden menu via dialer and force your phone into CDMA or LTE or whatever you want. It's simple really and will give you what you want.
Well, is there a "new to Verizon" guide somewhere? Verizon didn't tell me about the secret codes. I don't even know how to do an advanced prl update.
I should have clarified that I've only ever been on USCC. I've never used Verizon. But I do vaguely remember reading about a hidden dialer code now that you mention it. I'll look into that.

This is android secret code not Verizon.

Thanks. Never needed it because us cellular already offers that.

It's not a that they don't offer that 99% of the time you are better off on LTE so its good that phones prefer LTE. Most likely your other phone simply had that option not hidden unlike on Moto. So that wasn't a ussc feature

Agree to disagree. The data speeds are about the same here, but with the constant handoffs, LTE actually becomes slower and pages won't load because it's switching to 3G and back to LTE over, and over, and over. Plus the added battery drain off having 15-20dBm weaker signal, it's a no brainer. But maybe that's just in our less developed state.
The Samsung phone that I bought for my wife has no CDMA provisions, so it's not a Moto thing, it's a Verizon thing.
You can also download the thunder bolt lte on/off app and you have choices like CDMA auto prl. I use it to force CDMA only on my range extender at home.
Use shortcut creator to link to the hidden menu and your all set

This device doesn't run Verizon branded firmware at all. It's how Motorola provisioned the device to work. Like patt2k said you can change that via the hidden menu and you should be good to go, it won't look for LTE after that.

There seem to be many LTE on/off utilities in the App store. How did you pick this one?
I also have a Verizon Network Extender at home. I have trouble getting connected to it. I often have to reboot or turn the radio on/off to get my phone to connect to the Extender. I would appreciate any advice on how to get my phone to connect to the Extender more reliably.
It would also be nice if the phone would show via an Icon or screen that it is connected to the Extender. Right now the only way to know is to dial #48
EDIT: When I go into the Hidden Menu and select CDMA only, the phone temporary drops the LTE signal. However, LTE seems to quickly come back. Any suggestions on how to turn off LTE when I am home so that I force a connection to the Network Extender?
I can't get the hidden menu to switch from CDMA to LTE. It will switch temporarily, then drop the radio altogether forcing me to restart. Upon restart it's in CDMA only again. Personally, I'm fine without LTE. But I'm not sure why I can't get it enabled at all. I'd like to know I COULD have LTE if I wanted it. So I'm confused why it's stuck in CDMA

It worked with other Motorola devices in the past. CDMA only will fix your network extender issues.
You will have to set it back when you leave the house. Also it will go back to the default settings if you reboot. Works great for me.
