Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 (7") - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Really? Come on what's the deal, I mean they just released the fantastic 7.7 and a few months later an inferior tab but with the latest operating system, what gives? Why can't we get the love.
http://whatsuptechnology99.blogspot.com/2012/02/samsung-unveils-galaxy-tab-2-70-offers.html
They just keep churning all these tabs and for what to keep track with Apple? If that's what they want to do they should just concentrate on one model at a time and put out the best they can instead of different models that are subpar to Apple, don't get me wrong I love the Galaxy tabs and this is my second one but this is just rediculous.

They have way too many offerings. It's almost annoying, but I LOVE me some Samsung!

it doesn't really matter. they give people their choices which is fine. But the hardware has matured to the point where...unless you are a hardcore tablet gamer...there isn't going to be a big boost in functionality between one gen to the next gen. My "old" Samsung Vibrant can do anything that a newer phone can do and it is a little more than a year and a half old...and it's running Froyo.
But this tablet...the 7.7...its the tablet i dreamed about when the original tab was released..and now I have it...release away Samsung...you've already done right by me.

One would think that the 7.7 would come out with ICS and to find out that a lower end model comes with instead is a bit annoying. I hope ICS comes out soon for the 7.7

I duno wat they r thinking.... keep making the same thing n give it a different name. ppl wnt buy it jus because it called tab '2'. unless it is like 300 doller. iPad is guna come out unless there is no major change otherwise customer wnt go for these tab '2'...... n ipad 3 is more likely to be quadcore. still waiting for my 7.7 tho lol.

Basically, Samsung is a massive company with a massive manufacturing capability. They are more interested in spraying the market with devices like a machine gunner rather than caring about nerds' cries for upgrades. Bottom line is, you bought the device as is. I didn't see any stickers on the box promising "upgrade soon!". Make your decision according to what you're getting at the time of purchase

You are missing the 8.9 version and as far as I know there is no 11.6 version, unless that is the rumoured full HD version. Also there is the galaxy tab 2 10.1 replacing the original 10.1? Although it is thicker and slightly heavier but it does gain a microSD slot but no info on the gpu.
I believe the new tab 2 (7 and 10.1) are using a qualcomm chipset but I am not 100% on this, and I believe these are a bit slower in the graphics dept.
I did have a chance to play with the 8.9 LTE here at a samsung booth and it was not that smooth even though it was running exynos, maybe it was all the widgets and touchwiz that were slowing it down.

The Tab7.7 will get ICS but dont expect for it to be released too soon, ICS is the only main selling point of the 'newer' Tabs, the added weight is some what odd thought, the Tab10.1 is massively heavy compared to the 7.7 and now they are adding a few more grams!
The 11.6 is purely a rumored device, Although I am hoping but I dont think Samsung has a fullHD panel ready for us yet, I also hope that the 11.6 wont come with SuperAMOLED.

i dont expect ics official come soon, just hope aosp ics can come soon

Yeah, at least here in the US, the AT&T-branded tab 8.9 LTE (SGH-I957) uses a Qualcomm S3, the same SoC used in the LTE-flavored GS2 and Note (I727, I717).

Correct, however it's been said Exynos and LTE don't mix and can't co-exist. However, the Verizon 7.7 contradicts having Exynos AND LTE together.
Usually Samsung had to replace Exynos with a slower Qualcomm S3 chip to achieve LTE. Such as the AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.9.. Has LTE.. thus they put in a Qualcomm S3 chip inside to achieve this.
Verizon's 7.7 now has Exynos with LTE.
Samsung has either made a revised LTE equipped Exynos 4210 or they are using an external LTE chip alongside their Exynos.

I'm pretty sure poisike's point is that they didn't replace Exynos in the Tab 8.9; it had Tegra2 in the first place, so it's not even an example of your point, like the LTE GS2 and Note. And without any actual data, what is the point of speculating further about what baseband they may or may not be using in the I815?

Is it still worthit?

Many tablets are coming out in a couple of months equiped with tegra 3 one of which is the toshiba 7.7 with tegra 3 and super amoled screen similar to the tab. Tegra3 is always faster in running games and also has a very good battery life due to its helper core (5th core) plus most demanding and graphic intensive games are mostly designed to run on tegra. Should i wait for this or just shell out some cash and get the tab 7.7
Also i have red that one app that i always use is the splashtop which they just released a new version specifically designed for tegra3 processor so you can play graphic intensive games from pc and stream it to your tablet.
Quadcore cpu is the new technology and dual core is showing up its age , what do you guys think?
As many people say, if you always wait for the latest and greatest you will always be waiting. I got the 7.7 cause it was the newest model and I just wanted it, did i need it ? no but I just wanted it and the big seller is that I could finally use it as both a phone and tab, something that the original tmobile tab did not fully do. I am not familiar with tegra 3 but I do keep hearing about it. It is basically up to you and what your needs are.

Any device you buy at any time is going to be out-dated within a few days/weeks. Just the way technology is. Gotta decide what your use case is and determine if a device meets your use case, and if so go for it.
Well with chainfire 3d all the new tegra 3 games works just fine.
I had TF prime for a week. It was with HC but I would say it doesnt look like fast tablet. I can't even watch YouTube 1080p in blowser. Laggyy.

I think chainfire is.not stable for HC yet? Any1 is using it?
The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is going to be leaps and bound better in the physical tablet war.. There's nothing coming out matching it's size/weight and feature set.
It's the thinnest and lightest 7-8" tablet in existence, has an amazing screen, a resolution only found in 10" Android tablets, list goes on.. Not the mention the 12+ hour battery life, besting the iPad2.
However, the CPU might be decently powerful at this time, but it will soon be easily overpowered by Qualcomm S4 tablets, Exynos2, OMAP5, (anything next gen, Tegra3 excluded). Tegra3 isn't that great, being based on Cortex A9 still.
allways a choice
This is the choice you allway have to make when it comes to electronic I personally buy something new and then enjoy it for a while until i just cant wait buying the next thing. Like its sayd many times before if you wait for the next "new" think, you can wait forewer

I have the Verizon 4G LTE and I have to say, with regard to portability, feature set and shear amazement at the size and screen this tablet is the all in one device I have been looking for especially in the portability arena.
The 7.7 is an exceptional Tab. It is actually the BEST tab on the market with all features, best form factor, best screen and overall best performance.
Quad Core CPUs are USELESS for Android at this time. Let me repeat that, USELESS! And the Tegra 3 is particularly a joke. The OS and NO APPS can take advantage of it. Good Dual Core is the way to go.
There is plenty of power in the 7.7 as it is and you can overclock it to closer to 2GHz making it a treat! For long time, it will be enough! I still have the original Tab 7 running an overclocked 1.4GHz CPU (from its 1GHz stock speed) and still works amazingly well. The 7.7 compared to it is a rocket.
Sure the Qualcomm S4 and OMAP5 sound sweet though surely Samsung will prefer using it its own Exynos2 in the near future that is "faster" than the current processor on the 7.7 but not so much faster.. definitely will be more energy efficient I think.
So, the 7.7 has plenty or life in it for a long way to come.
If I have any gripes on the 7.7 are the pathetic choices of Samsung sticking with the near 3 year old 3MP camera modules that are on every Tab no matter the new models (its absurd they never got upgraded) and the fact speakers need a bit punchier sound to them..
Other than that the 7.7 is a great Tab, as thin as it can be, feature full and with a screen to die for.
Buy it and love it.

Spec wars are useless in this era of android...functionality is key. My samsung vibrant can do anything this tablet can...just a bit slower...a new tablet won't be able to do anything that this can't ...but other tablets like the padfone or transformer prime can turn into laptops if that's what you want...
For me...the screen is amazing and its portable to the point that I don't feel like an idiot leaving the house with it...so this is perfect for me

I think this is the best tablet out yet, (until tomorrow that is ). The hype now of comparing CPU cores is exactly the same as the frequency wars on desktop CPU's a few years ago, and also very much like the sensor pixel count on digital cameras. Up to a point it becomes meaningless and pointless. Its all marketing to hype up a product.
For mobile devices the performance of a device is not solely governed by the CPU. Its the sum of its parts. Its why an iPhone4 (single core) is as responsive and as fast in practical use as a GalaxyS2 (dual core). The Tegra2 was a joke, and it looks like the Tegra3 isn't the messiah its been hyped to be either.
Welcome to the 7.7 club and I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy using the device.

They are seriously going to associate the "S3" name with this crap?
Can samsung really not make a small phone as good as iphone? Is this the downfall of the galaxy S brand image? No doubt the average person will compare this with the iphone 5 and it wont look good.

I suspect to the average Joe it is, quad core doesn't make it text any quicker or reduce the number of dropped calls and as for the camera you obviously can't squeeze the 8mp in such a small body.
Seems to me Samsung can't win elsewhere they're being lambasted for releasing the i9305 and devaluing the i9300 by relegating it to second fiddle and here for the mini not shoe Horning the S3 hardware into a smaller, more desirable?, chassis with a better screen.

Facepalm indeed. If these specs are true, the s3 mini would be lousier than the s2 and the galaxy s advanced. I would expect the mini to at least be as good as the s2

What are you talking about? The WVGA screen is not going to be anyway near as good. The iphone 5 has an 8MP camera, the 4S had as well and they are both very small phones.
The novathor chipset is not going to provide the smooth performance that people associate with the S3.
Why would a smaller body be more desirable? Many people like the big screen of S3 those who dont shouldnt have bought it. Yes the i9305 is actually a ***** move because it is everything the S3 is and more, a smaller S3 cant be that.
And you know even a galaxy S2 is fine for texting and calling so what is the point of this phone? Galaxy S2 is also pretty reasonably sized.
A 4" screen of 300PPI, a slightly under clocked quad core CPU and 8MP camera is what is needed from an S3 mini to compete with the iphone 5. Seems like apple excels at engineering more than anybody else when it comes to making a high end small device.
Cash grab yes but in this case it is perfectly reasonable because of two factors.
1. They have to make up the 1 billion dollars that Apple robbed them of somehow. Why not try and rob it from isheep that are holding back on the GS3 because of the size, they won't know any better.
2. Nobody knows if the GS4 and Note 2 will replicate the success of their predecessors, so they need to cash grab when they can. For example, I had the GS2 and GS3 but I won't be purchasing the GS4(unless I cave in) because I might be moving to Windows Phone just for a change of pace. The GS3 is the first phone in YEARS to make Apple release their iphone earlier than they wanted, it might not happen ever again. So instead of letting Apple gouge the consumers, I am perfectly okay with Samsung gouging for 2012. At least it is not Apple. Although the ipad mini might be a gouger.
Samsung made 7 billion dollars in the last quarter. They don't need to pull off something this stupid that can be damaging in the long term.
I am still hoping the device will either not be called S3 mini or will not have those sort of specs as leaked by the German site.

This wont hurt them. Nobody who bought the tab 2 7 or tab 2 10.1 knows that the tablet they bought licks ass even compared to the old 10.1. This one actually has a relatively new SOC at least. It should run decent with the lower res.

Sony chipsets are fine. Although that article is sketchy because there is no U8420, U8500 is the lowest. That L9540 sounds like a beast though, it uses a power vr while the rest use the mali 400.

For some people the S3 is too big and imho this isn't aimed at S3 buyers anyhow, they're using the S3 as a halo device to attract people in, people who might buy into SJs belief that the iphone is the perfect size. And hard as it may be for you to believe, for some, the S3 in a smaller body with a better screen would be ideal.

Same reaction happened when the A1 Merc or Porsche Boxster was released. Purists where upset!
It's just a budget model, don't like it don't buy it. But it's about time they had one.
Wonder what Apple thinks of Sammy using there word mini? Bet jurors think it's an iPod mini clone. White, rectangle, smooth corners, uses the mini name
Swyped on I9300 - XXDLIB - Siyah kernel - JKay & Thunderbolt tweaks.
They're just abusing the name of S3 here, there's no point in this device. It was expected to be a direct competitor to the iPhone, but it isn't. There's no reason for anyone to buy this. Hardware is no good, price is high, it doesn't really compete with anything.

No it's not hard at all I myself was waiting for the S3 mini.
I personally find the S3 to be too big and guess what? I didnt buy it I am waiting for someone to make a smaller device as good as S3. However if I were to give in and buy the current S3 and then later a smaller version comes then I wont have any right to be pissed off. That would like ipad users getting pissed at the ipad mini.
So it really is official then.
Less pixels to push plus JB 4.1 should allow it to run pretty close to the GS3 with ICS. It will run fine, if you can live with the low resolution. lol
This post just made me look at my current galaxy s 3 and feel instantly sick.

[Q] Poll: Galaxy S3 US vs. Nexus 4

I would not upgrade, you can just wait until a 4.2 AOSP ROM for the GS3 comes out. In terms of Hardware, they are not that different: both have a quad core, a similar sized HD screen, and both are just insanely fast (I believe, at least

Mods, please move my poll to the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 Q&A, thank you
One of the major pros of a Google phone is Google updates. No waiting for carriers.
That's a good enough reason for me, to be honest. I have an S3.

I don't like TW, and I was waiting to get nexus since the first 1 but those build quality weren't that good.
If you ask me about samsung hardware build quality I would say its crappy but the best one out there though

I have a Vibrant...yes the Samsung lost abandon phone...I was thinking next phone will only be google phone ...BUT LG kinda stunk it I think. I was willing to pay as much as iphone, but
I found it has
NO 32GB,
NO External SD,
NO removable battery
NO Glonass
NO LTE (<====? Common everything is heading toward LTE now, why? why??)
Now, I'm thinking I probably go with Samsung Galaxy S III i9305 not the i9300 (it has everything and 2GB ram)

The Nexus 4 does in fact have GLONASS support, according to this comparison.
Also, LTE was abandoned because Google didn't want to partner with carriers (especially in the US) to launch Nexus devices, considering how badly Verizon handled Galaxy Nexus updates. Google's cooperation with At&t/Verizon would have reportedly made it more financially feasible to add LTE.
I am interested to hear reviews from those going from an S3 to a Nexus 4. I feel I would prefer the S3 over the Nexus 4, the Nexus 4 is just too cheap to pass up though. I currently have a Galaxy Nexus and love it. But I have spent some time with an S3 and would rather have that over my GN.
i just played with the n4 at my local store and let me say that n4 mops the floor with it..it is amazingly fast..having a ported 4.2 aosp build for the s3 is not the same as having the orginal 4.2..****, i have a hox and the n4 blows the hox out of the water..and the good thing is, google is going to release the n4 with 32gb..no source..just have been told by a google employee
Ah things get a little more interesting when the British, Aussie, European (and so on) Galaxy S3's are thrown into the mix.
Then it's Quad Core Exynos 4412 vs Quad Core Snapdragon S4 Pro
1GB vs 2GB RAM
The mobile networks around the world are quicker to provide updates than the American 'carriers'
BATTLE OF THE TITANS!!!
Yes, especially if you have the international version which has less than stellar custom ROM support.
My Galaxy S3 is the phone that single-handedly convinced me only buy Nexus phones from now on.
So what are your thoughts, those who have went from the S3 to the Nexus 4? I am curious.

Awwww. That's messed up how they didn't release a 32GB version from the start. I'm fine with 16GB, but nothing wrong with having more storage.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
As someone who has switched to the Nexus 4 from the AT&T S3, these are my thoughts.
Cons:
- No removable storage.
- No LTE (not that big of a deal imo)
- No Removable Battery (never removed my battery, so don't care)
- Nexus 4 is made of glass, and slides off almost everything.
- Screen is less sensitive (I've frequently had to tap multiple time for it to be registered)
- Better battery life on the S3 (but I haven't had my N4 for very long)
- No hardware home button on the front (this is a nice convenience imo.)
- Better Camera on the S3
- Louder speakers on the S3 (N4 is barely audible in the shower)
Pros
- N4 feels so much better than the S3. Swiping feels superb, holding the phone feels great, and the N4 looks much better than S3.
- AOSP Out of the Box (I didn't think this would be a big deal, but I've been using the phone unrooted and wow, its like everything just works how I want it to.)
- Direct updates from Google (no more waiting on custom roms and leaks)
- Better Screen (everything looks a lot more realistic and better imo)
- Faster (everything is so smooth on the N4 and I haven't seen any lag or stutter yet as I did [rarely] on the S3. This creates a better experience.)
My experience with the Nexus 4 is that it just feels better to use than the S3. Its something you have to try for yourself I guess.

Samsung Galaxy Note III to ship with an Exynos 5 Octa processor

Samsung announced the 8-core Exynos 5 Octa processor during CES and given that, it only seems logical that the company will include that processor in at least some of their 2013 devices. Notably, the higher-end devices such as the Galaxy Note, which presumably will be released as the Galaxy Note III later in the year. Samsung has yet to confirm the details (or the existence) of the Note III, however some reports have begun to surface with talk of specs.

In short, is it believed that the Note III will feature the Exynos 5 Octa processor. That and, also grow in size going from the 5.5-inch display that the Note II features up to a 6.3-inch display. And while 6.3-inches may seem on the larger side, remember that many made fun of the jump from the original Galaxy Note at 5.1-inches to the Note II — and we see how that went. Not to mention, Huawei recently announced a 6.1-inch handset, the Ascend Mate.
Aside from display size and processor, that is where the specs have stopped for the Note III. The interesting part here, while the Note II already has stellar battery life, the battery life on the Note III could be even better. That comes due in part with the processor, which if you remember back to CES, was focused on efficiency. The Exynos 5 Octa will have a total of 8-cores broken down as four Cortex-A15 processors and four Cortex-A7 cores. This means the A15 cores will handle processing-intense tasks and the A7 cores handling the lighter workloads.
According to Samsung, this means up up to 70 percent higher energy efficiency as compared to the previous quad-core Exynos. Bottom line here, assuming things play out as they appear — it is looking like Samsung will be able to make a nice jump from the Note II to Note III with improvements to not only the processor and battery life, but also have it arrive with a much larger display. We just have to wonder, what is that point where smartphones and tablets will find middle ground.

Erm.. If Note III its gonna have it, so the S IV.. As traditionally Note its a larger version of S.. Samsung won't change that and by the way if you are going to copy paste some random article.. At least read it first and correct erros like saying that the Original Note its 5.1" when it is 5.3"

Definitely - 8 cores, better battery life, higher display resolution and assume slightly bigger screen with multi-functional cradles, finally reason to move on from Note I .
If the Note3 is going to be 6.3, then this will be my next phone! I was considering the Ascente Mate 6.1, but since its battery is non-removable, this is a NO for me. 6.3 will just be perfect - I always like big screen phones!

Galaxy Note 10.1 Successor?

I thought it would be good to have a thread regarding a possible successor of the current Galaxy Note 10.1 and to post any infos and rumors here. Today I've read some leaked infos about an iPad mini rival, the Galaxy Note 8.0, which is going to be unveiled the end of February at the MWC in Barcelona.
So what do you think when and what we can expect from the real successor of the Note 10.1?
If the Galaxy S4 is going to have a eight-core CPU and FullHD resolution, I think it's also save to assume that the next model of the Note tablet will include these specs.
Any infos/rumors/thoughts?
I have read a few reports which suggest the S4 will have a 5 inch screen and the Note 3 is slated at 6.3 inches. IF this is confirmed then releasing an 8 inch Note would make no sense as Sammy would be taking sales away from its flagship devices.
I think the successor to the Note 10.1 IS the Note 10.1. LTE devices inbound. Other than screen res (which is pretty irrelevant) the 10.1 is still up there in specs.
I dont think the LTE Note is anything more than a minor update. There has to be a next generation at some point, and I think it will also be based around the S4 cpu/gpu with a 1080p screen.

I am curious what the name of the next gen Note 10.1 will be. With other sammy products, S3, S4....,Note 2, Note 3....are the names and make sense.
So, where do you go with the Note 10.1 name? The Note 2 10.1?
*Inhale*
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Part Deux.
Note 2 10.1, just like they did with the galaxy tab 2 10.1
There's a 8" Note coming; it's supposed to be announced at MWC.
SamMobile received new information about Samsung’s new upcoming Note device the GT-N5100. At the first place the Samsung GT-N5100 will come in 2 versions GT-N5100 3G / Wi-Fi version and the GT-N5110 Wi-Fi only version. The name of GT-N5100 will be the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. Samsung’s new upcoming Galaxy Note 8.0 will use a 8.0” 1280×800 TFT (Super Clear LCD) display, 5 megapixel back camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 2 GB RAM, 16/32 internal + Micro SD slot. The battery of the Galaxy Note 8.0 will be a 4600 Mah one. The Galaxy Note 8.0 will also have many ways of connectivity like Bluetooth version 4.0, USB 2.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and A-GPS. The dimensions of the tablet will be 211.3×136.3×7.95 mm and the weight is around the 330g. Samsung’s new Note device will run on Android 4.2 called Jelly Bean.
Samsung want to introduce this new tablet at MWC 2013 in Barcelona we of SamMobile will be there!

As for their plans for future 10+" Android tablets that's a good question. With the fairly high spec level of the N10 at $399 that puts pricing pressure on any successor to the G-Tab 2. Samsung selling a "Samsung-ized" version of the N10 at the same price is below their typical margin. I guess they could come out with a G-Tab 3 that's higher spec than today but priced lower and spec'd lower than the N10. They could also give up that end of the market and just focus on Note tablets. The Note 10.1 has been their most successful Android tablet based on Q3 sales of 1MM a month. If that pace continues it will be a big hit for them. So I'd expect a Note 10.1 II with better specs and similar pricing about six to nine months (their typical product cycle) after the original 10.1's launch date which was August.
The SGS4/N3 rumors aren't even remotely credible. The 6.3" display rumor was one line buried in a ten paragraph story about Samsung' s (non-mobile) LCD business. The specs for the SGS4 that have been floating around have it equipped with an S Pen which doesn't make a lot of sense considering how much more an inductive display would cost and the money Samsung's spent developing the "Note" brand. Putting a 1080P inductive display on a high-volume product like the SGS4 would eat in to their margins and I can't see them wanting to do that when they charge a premium for the Note-series primarily because of S Pen and its features.
I don't really believe that we will see any "Galaxy Tab" models in the future. Some people even confuse the "Tab 10.1" with the "Note 10.1". Also the S-Pen functionality of the Galaxy Note tablets is more or less the killer feature compared to other Android tablets and to Apples iPad. I guess the name of the next model could be something like "Note 10.2" or maybe even "Note 11".

It didn't sell when Asus did it which is why no one replicated it on Android. In Q3 Asus sold 250K 10" "transformers" a month while Samsung sold 1MM Notes a month. Asus' next 10" (low-end) tablet won't have external keyboard support so even they are moving away from it. With W8 out now there's less reason to try and make Android compete as productivity devices. With or without keyboards doing true productivity work like in MS Office is painful on Android. The Note Android line of tablets was smart on Samsung's part because rather than try to replicate a tried-and-failed model (Asus) they went a different direction focusing on other types of creation.

I see a note 10.1 successor coming around the second half of the year. Specs wise it'll be octa core exynos 5, hopefully somewhere around 1600x900 res or even 1080p as I find 2560x1600 to be overkill for 10" screen and you really can't appreciate it at that size. Possibly stick with 2gb ram and might then have an added 64gb option also. Of course it'll have wacom screen as well c:

I think the Note could use a keyboard option like the Transformer. Honestly the only reasons I chose the Note over the Transformer is because of the IR blaster and S-pen.
Hell, I don't even really use the Note that much anymore since I got an ultrabook. Keyboard is king.
The annual glut of trade shows fosters speculatiom about new products. It appears that the rumors about an 8-inch GN may be true. Engadget has an article and picture of a product box. I don't begrudge Samsung turning out new products to stay competitive. It will be interesting to see if LTE versions of this smaller tablet get rolled out earlier. Since, in theory, it should be more portable since it's smaller, I wonder if Samsung will include NFC.
