New Sprint Gingerbread ROM or not? - Epic 4G General

Are we headed for at least one more "final" version of Android 2.3 for our Epics officially released by Sprint or not? I know EL30 was largely motivated by the removal of CIQ, but I really can't guess what Sprint is up to with these latest leaks.
Anyway, I'm always so conservative about flashing new ROMs that I figure if we're getting yet another new one soon, I might as well wait.

considering a new leak was posted, I would say yes, another official build is coming. What it is....I'm not fully sure. Our epics went from ignored to full restored very quickly.

Just what I was thinking, agreed. The wait for Froyo was so agonizing that I remember pessimism we would always remain on Eclair and we'd be abandoned like Samsung's old phones. Quite a long strange trip it's been.

Since there is no major change in the leak maybe they are trying to sneak in some other type of monitoring software to replace CIQ. (Paranoid me)

As I look at CM9 on my phone; I wonder what is this gingerbread you all are speaking about?? It seems vaguely familiar like a long distant memory

Yes it is interesting and suspicious we are getting attention.
Perhaps they are scared that their inattention has driven people away from Sprint. Contracts are the bread and butter. Not sure why they would care about CIQ, rooting, or custom ROMs. Infact if they are friendly to us wouldn't that be an attraction?
I fully understand why they cannot support software mods. But I do not see the downside for them being friendly toward it.
Hacked hot spot as well. The carrier controlles are bandwidth and data volume. End of story. Sure they loose some money from not selling that plan, but maybe they keep many more contracts, so they can still come out a head.

We are the 1%, not the 99. They care about the blind sheep paying for every service and not putting on unauthorized software that may seem to cause hardware problems. There are a lot of people that screw up rooting their phones and run to Sprint to fix it. That costs them money as well. From a corporate, bottom-line mentality I can see it. $30 a month is a LOT of money to lose based on the $100 a month plan. I don't agree with it but I can see their point to play devil's advocate. It just takes a few bad apples to ruin the pie if you know what I mean.

I wish we would get an official I.C.S. release from sprint... that would be amazing. I can only dream of all the sweet roms that would emerge with an official ICS source. However, this will never happen. They would rather we get impatient and spend 500.00+ on the new galaxy S2 or similar device. It is not sprints goal to keep us happy, it's their goal to keep us wanting more. For every early upgrade they sell, they make up for the few people that get tired of sprint and switch service. Once we upgrade our phones, it will be the same story all over again. The firmware will grow outdated, sprint will neglect, we upgrade. Most U.S. carriers require 2 year contracts for a new device for a reason... you are likely to grow tired of it before 2 years are up. They make a TON off full price phone purchases. How do i know this? Virgin mobile sells a couple phones sprint carries.....except they are about 2-300 dollars cheaper with no contract signing. It's almost sickening to think about. not really... but you know what I mean. A business has to make money, its the same with every carrier.

I can't imagine all the development work going into these test ROMs without any plans to release a new ROM.
The FB15 leak appears to be a very minor change, with the only new feature being the Sprint Connections Optimizer, which is described as "helps manage and enhance your data experience by finding and connecting to the Sprint 4G Network and remembered wifi networks". There was no hint of an "ICS value pack" as some expected.
There may have been bug fixes in there too, but I didn't notice them.

Wow, that's a jaded opinion. Keep in mind this is a mature phone that they are still selling over a year after it was introduced. I'm sure their costs on this phone are pretty low by now. I think if they could shoehorn ICS into the phone it would certainly revive sales of an old phone, I think they would do it if they could. Remember it was Sammy, not Sprint that decided there would be no ICS for the original Galaxy S series. They claimed it just didn't run will enough on the hardware and from what I hear about CM9 (a bit sluggish and a battery hog compared to GB), there may be some truth in those comments. Time will tell whether anyone will get ICS to run smoothly and efficiently on our phones.

You have to realize also that the only reason our DEVs got CM9 ICS working is through changing the partition to MTD. BML is Sammy's proprietary partitiion and it seems that to them changing the partition on the older Galaxy S series (probably any of their phones actually) is out off the question. I am sure it would be hell if it was squeezed onto the BML partition.

Good point. Seems like doing an OTA update that repartitioned the phone would be a customer service nightmare. I'm guessing that BML could be setup with a larger system partition, but again doing that OTA could be a mess.

changing the system with an ota update, would be an mess. alot phones would be bricked and alot ppl would be calling samsprint with problems. maybe an message to go to their website to get an update like that would be easier. but ppl would still break things.

Samsung Holding Back Froyo!

AndroidSpin and BGR are reporting that a reliable T-Mobile Source told them that there is a fully functioning 2.2 OTA for the T-Mobile Vibrant, but that Samsung is holding the OTA back. The report then says that Samsung fears that if the OTA is released then this would devalue the upcoming T-Mobile Vibrant 4G. (I would post a link, but I do not have 8 post. If someone could for me that would be great.) Now, I know that the hardware is different, but does anyone think that Samsung may be doing the same thing to us fascinate users considering that a new Samsung LTE phone is coming out soon? This would make sense condersidering the Telus fascinate got 2.2 before we did. Now again I know the hardware is different, but it doesn't make sense they would get it before us considering the fascinate has been out longer for us and that they are more of us. It would also explain the DL09 release. Samsung may just be trying to hold us over until they decide to release 2.2 once the LTE phone sales are up. This is just something to think about. I personally am just going to flash Kaos's 2.2 once the data works

That is complete and total crap..... they shouldn't be holding back Froyo just to "improve" sales of the Vibrant 4g... the 4g should make enough incentive if someone really wants the 4g version of the phone. Also, isn't it a little early to be releasing a 4g phone when it is just now becoming available? I could be wrong!?!?!?

T-Mobile has had their "4G" out for some time now. Not quite as long as Sprint, but it's been around for a few months at least.
Just some more information. The Samsung LTE phone is suppose to hit Verizon in February. There are a few Samsung Galaxy S phones rumored to be getting froyo in March. This would leave a month for 3g galaxy s phones to still be on 2.1 while the new phones are on 2.2 or 2.3.
So the samsung LTE is probably to complete with the Iphone release 2/10/2011?
Seems totally non-bogus to me. If they already have working builds of froyo on the Galaxy Tab and 4G phones, which all contain pretty similar hardware, it's no doubt that Samsung has working froyo builds for the Fascinate.
It makes perfect sense in regards to their effed up strategy plan of continuing the release of updated phones but delaying software updates on already released ones. It's clear that these guys are holding back the 2.2 update on our device so that they can make more sales on the upcoming devices.
To be honest, it's not that my fascinate doesn't already do what I need it to do or gives me certain issues on its current software, but I just can't stay loyal to a company that continues to disregard their customers' concerns.

My sentiments exactly. The question is, will this rumor affect their timetables? This whole thing is so political...
I don't buy it. The draw of the new phones is 4G, or LTE, not the version of Android it's running. The fact that it's running 2.2 wouldn't sway someone to buy one phone over the other for the general consumer. And that is the market that matters most to the manufacturers. To the more advanced users it might make a difference, but they make up a very small percentage.
Doesn't hold weight in my opinion.

Its a bullet point. Since Samsung did not opt to be part of the droid line on verizon, any additional bullet points adds to the selling factor of the phone. Sales people will use this to push people to the newer phones, saying things like "Its got the latest Android 2.2" or "It has the version of Android that supports flash". Its just in poor taste for Samsung to do this, and to me, its the same with Apple releasing the same iPhone for verizon that's been on at&t for 7 months or so now. I wouldn't get an iphone until after there announcement later this year, because since 2008, they have released a new iphone every year. Ok, sorry, I got off topic, but as you can see other companies do similar things just to sell more phones. Looking at all the companies with android smartphones, HTC and MOTO have done good jobs keep their android phones up to date. Samsung needs to step it up.
If said source is referring to JL5, there is a reason they are holding it back...its a piece of garbage.

Count me as skeptical, the source seems contradicts himself, unless I'm misreading:
…Being that, Vibrant 4G and Vibrant have exactly same stats, added FFC and a new movie and the 4G. But i will tell you this, the original vibrant CAN utilize 4G FULLY. Yes FULLY. not what they are telling you.

Still, who knows. It wouldn't surprise me if they scheduled the update to be closer to the release date (VZW released 5.0 for the Storm 1 a day or two before the Storm 2 went on sale). If it does exist, and isn't a POS, it will probably get leaked.
I can see this, but it is stupid as the LTE feature alone should be enough to push people to upgrade. Additionally, those with Galaxy S phones have all had them for less than two years (typical upgrade timeframe). So how many people do they really think they can pursued to switch? Seems far more harmful to continue to piss off your existing user base who might consider later LTE phones at end of year or next when upgrade option is available.
I don't think they want to try and get people to switch. Its more for new sales. If the vibrant is sitting there for half the price (galaxy S phones are reaching the discounted portion of their lifespan) running nearly the same specs, minus the 4G, it will look pretty attractive to a decent chunck of consumers. If salesmen can say "this new one is faster and has a newer operating system" most people will think "new MUST be better" and blindly go for that.
Like someone else already said, it would just be a bullet point for salesmen.
from a business point of view, samsung did the right thing. Why fix what isn't broke, while making something in the future look much more desirable. They will make most of their money this way.
Honestly, the dev community is a very very VERY small portion of their clients. A couple thousand out of however many million phones they've sold... Most people are perfectly happy living in ignorance about all these damn desert names. ESPECIALLY now that they have a working GPS on the phone.
So why please a couple thousand, when they could be making millions on future phones?
Unfortunately for us, this blows! But they are a business. Businesses lie. ultimate goal is to make the dough...

If true, it would definitely explain a lot of things. It does make me dislike Samsung, but hopefully the carriers can strong-arm Samsung into doing what everyone else is doing.
Personally, I bought this phone because it was either this or the Droid X, and the difference was that while the DX might have Froyo now, the odds of Motorola putting Gingerbread on it are less than 100%, and the odds of it getting anything after that are even lower, and with the locked bootloader you can't do anything about it. With the Fascinate, at least we can look forward to community built ROMs for some time into the future, definitely past what Samsung is willing to do (I figure they're never going to even consider putting Gingerbread on the Fascinate what with the LTE phones coming out soon, and SAMOLED+ and all that). People should probably avoid Samsung unless they specifically want the nice hardware and easy hacking, in which case it seems like Samsung is the most lax with security so they're the best choice for hacking.
Hmm, very enlightening, of it's true of course. Sounds entirely plausible though. Oh well, I really don't care anymore, not with kaos and friends on the job.

This is what we all expected.
But the question is... Why was it released with Eclair when Froyo was released before this phone was released.
wasn't the reason it was released with eclair because of the 1.6 ril or whatever? from what i read, the ril would barely work with eclair and no way for it to work with froyo.
my understanding is that a large part of the magic that kaos is doing was to build a functional ril.
They arent building a new ril. They are hacking android around the current crap ril Samsung gave us.

That's what jt's been doing, and he ended up just hacking the current Samsung RIL to work. And if you follow his twitter, he said that the RIL from Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread on the Android side didn't change much which is why they're jumping straight to Gingerbread instead of wasting time with Eclair.

Um, wow, what have you been reading? First off, our phone came with 2.1, not 1.6, so I'm not sure where you got that number from.
Secondly, the reason that we (not Samsung) could not build a ROM not based on the stock OEM ROM was because the source code for the RIL that Samsung provided for the Fascinate was bad code, which made it extremely difficult to create a working RIL what will work with a custom OS. However, jt1134 and punk.kaos were able to reverse engineer the bad code into working code, in order to proceed with ROM building.
This has nothing to do with Samsung themselves though. Samsung built the RIL to begin with, so they most certainly can (and have) created RIL code that works with Froyo, quite a long time ago in fact. They released the Galaxy S line with Eclair because that was likely the newest version available when they began developing the OS for those phones. In order to convert the OS to Froyo to launch it on the phone, they would have had to significantly delay the launch, which was not an option. This is likely why so many phones are released with outdated versions of Android. And I would like to point out that if they just put Google's code on there and didn't insist in polluting it with their own proprietary junk, it wouldn't take so long to release in the first place, and wouldn't be so difficult to upgrade later.
Getting back on topic, I figured that the problem with getting these updates really all comes down to money. People have always had to pay for OS upgrades for PCs, but due to Android and iOS, have now come to expect to receive these updates for free. The problem is, somebody has to develop an upgrade process, and test the heck out of it, and those developers have to get paid. So the OEM pays them, and then naturally tries to pass the cost along to the carrier, because they don't want to work for free. The carrier also doesn't want to pay for the upgrade, but also knows they can't get away with charging their customers for it without significant backlash, so they basically just sit there and hope the problem eventually goes away, or that the OEM will finally back down and release the update for free, which is what's been described as our current situation.
If this is really such a big problem, they could be taking steps to not end up in this situation, such as figuring the cost of these upgrades into the price of the phones and/or rate plans. However, the carriers also have added incentive to not push for the upgrades, because that effectively extends the life of the handset, and they want you to keep buying new hardware all the time, since they make money from selling hardware, and lose money on the free upgrades.
In the end, it's all about money. Thankfully we have such a great community of developers here on XDA that are willing to go the extra mile to not only get us our upgrades, but also add cool features and boost the performance way beyond what the manufacturer gave us. Thanks to that, our hardware's lifetime is determined not by when a carrier or OEM pulls support, but rather by when the devices physically die or break, or the hardware becomes too outdated for the tasks we wish to perform. And this way, through donations, we can pay our developers for good upgrades, not our carrier for crappy, bloated ones.
Im not saying its true but the most legitimate explanation for all this bull**** I have actually heard in a while. So for what its worth Im not going to shoot that down. Possibly true at this point.

Anyway, I don't know whether to believe this but it explains why no US carriers have Froyo yet. It's kind of frustrating that Verizon is the only carrier that hasn't even had a leaked Froyo build it seems. Damn ingrates spoiling leaks for the rest of us.
Ah, I see. Thanks for the link. I admit that tweet came before I followed him on twitter, so I hadn't seen that. I can see how that would complicate matters though.

You might wanna rethink that. Why, you ask? Because Samsung puts out some of the best hardware available, especially the screens, and we always have devs that can hack up the code to make it better than it ever would have been with a stock ROM. HTC isn't too bad, though the issue with rooting the G2 is certainly raising some eyebrows, but if you were thinking about Motorola, have fun with your locked bootloader and other fun tricks that attempt to squash community development. Aside from lousy source code, Samsung phones are the easiest to root and customize due to the unlocked bootloader. You can basically just flash anything you want with ODIN, no problem.
It is not necessarily the case in the future because Tab reportedly has locked boot loader. This said people already found workaround, but who knows?..
That is true. Nobody knows what the future holds. In any case, if you have no problem loading custom software from XDA devs on your phone, then OEM software support should not even be on the list of requirements when buying a phone. I now make my phone purchasing decisions purely based on hardware specs and quality. If it's a quality piece of hardware with the features I want, on my carrier of choice (Verizon), I will buy it, regardless of manufacturer or UI. Warranties and insurance work the same no matter who makes it, and software updates come from XDA, so nothing else really matters. But then again, that's just my opinion.

It is easier to hide posting on a forum than it is sending a tip into an online news outlet, at least in general. Also, by posting it in a forum, it is entirely likely that it will be up for longer than it would be if posted at say, Engadget, because it takes longer for news to show up in major outlets if posted in a forum first as opposed to a news site. If it were posted at Engadget or another tech blog, they are likely watched over very closely for potential NDA breaches, etc. I doubt Samsung looks are random forums/subforums/threads nearly as close.
IF it were $$ couldn't we as users pay like $20 for Froyo...
x 3 million phones = more than enough to pay for DEV
I don't buy it.
Why?
Because these companies work off of contracts. Verizon would know exactly what they were getting into before signing. If Samsung decides to breach said contract, fine, let Verizon sue the hell out of them. Lastly, Verizon would not have sold or marketed docks that rely on 2.2, if they had no intention of releasing it.
Actually one more thing. If US Carriers were refusing, Samsung would halt development. We are seeing new leaks for the other US models all the time, and Verizon is still being worked on (but not leaked).
This is a case of where 2+2=5=false.

[RANT]You got what you paid for.

I've only had this Epic for almost a month and am very satisfied with it so far. But its getting pretty old looking on xda everyday to see someone new complaining about not having Froyo. You got what you paid for people, you bought a epic with 2.1 eclair on it, do you buy windows xp and then when windows 7 comes out you complain they won't upgrade you for free? There will always be something better and something new out there or up and coming you can't expect companies to sit there and keep working on things of the past they have to make money as well and they have to compete with each other and try to stay on top. I'm not saying I don't think they shouldn't release it for us I'm just saying you realy can't blame them for moving on with other phones as well. And if you think 2.2 is gonna make your phone that much better then go get a vibrant from tmobile bc I put 2.2 on my girlfriends phone last week and it didn't do much of anything for it, its just software sure your battery is a little better or the system runs a little smoother your not changing what you physically have the hardware is what it is and you knew all of this before buying the phone and if you didn't then you had 30 days to do some research and return it to sprint.

Alright, I'll bite.
most of us did not buy our epic's having seen a forum full of people dissatisfied with samsung's ability to upgrade their phones. I for one bought my phone on launch day. August 31st 2010. It was a sunny day, there was a nice breeze. I was young without a care in the world. I saw a phone with very formidable hardware and better yet, a promise from samsung that the device would see 2.2 in the very "near" future.
Now I don't know what you paid for your phone, but I paid retail price plus tax. If I had known I was actually paying for an education about what it exactly it means to buy a samsung phone I would have looked elsewhere.
that being said, theres one thing I can't stand and that is people such as yourself who waited until after people bought the phone and realized that and official update in a timely fashion not likely, accepted that risk, and then come here to rub it in the face of those who care about things like kernel sources, and custom roms to tell us about how we should all be as smart as you with your divine phone selecting savvy. I can't say that I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself when I tell you sincerely to gtfo.
yours truly, cozmonot
Ok to someone like yourself I understand that you did not know what you were getting yourself into and I'm not trying to say that someone such as yourself that bought the phone right when it came out doesn't have a right to be mad. I never said I had waited to buy this phone for any reason its just when I see ppl on here that say they just got the phone and now are mad they don't have 2.2 yet its disturbing. I understand we need kernals and source to make better roms and things, I myself am running Nebula and have been since the first week of owning this phone, so as with the rest of you I myself would like it so my rom can be further upgraded. The main thing I was trying to get at is that complaining about how we don't have it isn't getting us it I did not mean disrespect for someone like yourself and I don't think I have any better taste for phones than the rest of us we all chose this phone for whatever reasons but I don't think anyone chose it bc it was going to have 2.2

I agree in that people complaining here doesn't really accomplish much. Apologies, I probably shouldn't reply to threads when I'm angry and tired.
I think we need to make our voice heard by sprint and samsung if we want things to actually happen, and complaining to people in the same position can't make things any better. just look at the vibrant owners who threatened a lawsuit and got the mainstream blogs to post about the vibrant not having froyo, didnt they get the update like a week later? I agree with what you said in your second post and I wish I had known about what I was getting myself into back in August when i signed on the dotted line.

Actually, I did. Also, because of the slide out keyboard. If I wanted a phone forever stuck with Eclair, I'd have kept my Moment.

I bought the phone because of the hardware and because it was stated that 2.2 would be coming soon. I don't understand how people like you can just accept that You have the phone with the best hardware specs on the market at the moment and not be pissed that it doesn't have 2.2. While I agree that coming on xda and starting multiple threads on if FroYo is out is not the most productive way of dealing with the problem, bending over and submitting that because you paid money for the device and knew that it had 2.1 on is just a cop out.
To answer your question on what does FroYo add, here is just a few.
- What about all of the people who spent $30 to $50 on official samsung docks and can't even use it to the fullest without FroYo. IT EVEN SAYS ON DAMN PACKAGING THAT FULL FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE UNLOCKED WITH THE 2.2 UPDATE.
- What about bluetooth voice dialing, JIT, flash, and the updated google apps that come with 2.2, not to mention the speed increase. The FroYo update for the Vibrant doesn't count in this case because everyone knows that update was rushed because of the lawsuit business, and that lead to a bugged release.
And if none of that convinces you, the fragmentation of the market is the best example I can give. Do you know how annoying it is to find an app that you know your phone has more than enough power to run, but it won't even show up in the market because it only works on FroYo and up? IT'S THE ****ING PITS DUDE. For example there is this game that some (ex-sony I think) devs called Lame Castle that I really want to play, but it won't work on galaxy s phones without FroYo. Look it up on the market with Epic, it won't even show up. Now go on appbrain and its there clear as day. There are numerous examples of this, but this is the one that affected me that most.
So when you say that we should have know better and should not be upset, all I can say is that I hope you continue to enjoy the anal that samsung and sprint have given you so far. There's a lot more to come.
It was my first Android. It was cool at first, but just wanted FroYo and refused to get the Evo because the screen sucks and no keyboard.

I would have to say my favorite part about what you said was when you said Froyo for vibrant was rushed and has bugs. Because that could be us, we could have a rushed crappy edition of froyo. I understand that it makes it better and we can't do somthings without but if your life won't go on because you can't play some game on your phone (unless somehow you've got a job doing mobile gaming) then it might be time to look at some new hobbies or just pay your way out of contract so you can go get a phone with froyo that will make you happy as a little kid in a candy shop. But it must not be that bad if your willing to wait it out and hope one day you will wake up and see an OTA.

Anyways android is a grey point right now as with your reference to XP you could pay to upgrade to vista/7 (driver / hardware supporting of course) where with android everything is kept under wraps so by the manufacturer until weeks or sometimes months after their "official" software is released and only then can some reverse engineer everything to get what they need to develop.
Hopefully the future of android can be like computer operating systems. Manufacturers only make drivers that way google can push out their own updates or at least give us the ability to do our own.

About the Vibrant, their is no excuse for that buggy release at such a late push date. The carriers have had FroYo since November and and have taken their own sweet time working on it. To add insult to injury, Every other carrier with a Galaxy S phone has pushed out FroYo since November. They even started getting 2.2.1 about two weeks ago. Even the number five carrier in the states, U.S. Cellular, has had FroYo out for its captivate out for about a month and a half now. And guess what? That update went off without a hitch. I also like how you were able to boil down my argument into the my statement about Lame Castle, which in my circles is very important because I'm going to school for that kind of thing, and Vibrant update which I would have even if I didn't have months of knowledge on the situation here and everywhere else that Galaxies are sold. You just get your phone and feel like preaching to me on how I should just take this ****. I bought this phone months ago knowing I would be with it for two years and expecting on Samsung to hold up to their statement of by the end of the year. Its a month into 2011 and still nothing. If you find your epic fine on 2.1, all power to you. But their are people with docks, people that want to make hands free calls while on the road, and people who just want full access to the market, who have all the right in the world to complain over this mess.
Note: Make multiple threads on XDA is NOT the way to go about it though people.

I decided to get THIS phone for the desired features AND the promise of 4G and 2.2 before the ed of the year. While you are entitled to your opinions, I certainly don't appreciate labeling and especially not when you do it from the safety of your keyboard. It just isn't called for.

I didnt read the majority of the posts, I apologize....just want to put in my two cents and I guarantee it'll still be on topic.
People here have the right to rant. They have the right to be angry. They bought a true high end Android phone and are still on 2.1. That's not right... I have an Evo and an Epic...and the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really just the Flash (I'm not including what Samsung through in there based off of the leaked roms. Because some of what they through in there was just polishing up the UI and stuff). And Flash isn't really that big of a deal, its just one of those things that is nice to have. But thats beside the point. It doesnt even matter if the only thing different between 2.2 and 2.1 was a damn ringtone...a high end Android phone should be updated. If you don't update these phones, then why would someone shell out extra money to buy another high end phone that will share the same exact features as a low end phone? True the High end will be faster, but it really needs to have something to separate itself from the low end phone and that something should be the fact that it will always be supported...
And this is the problem with Android and this is what makes me sick about it. Android is great...but dammit...they need to relax on these phones and focus on the ones that are out now. They just keep on taking our money, and its going to get to the point where no phones will be updated, they will just keep releasing phones with the new update. And they know people will straight up go buy the new phone just for that update, just to realize that it aint even good. I started with the Evo before the Epic and if I wouldve went from the Epic to the Evo just for 2.2, I wouldve been pissed the hell off. 2.2 is not worth it at all...well, lemme put it like this: 2.2 by itself is not worth it. Although it aint worth it, this high end phone should still have it. If the Evo has it...the Epic should have it. The Evo will probably get Gingerbread and that'll be a damn shame...it won't benefit from it at all...
I mean, when you look at this 2.2 update from different angles, you can see why people rant and get mad. They have the right to...now if we could just put all of it into one thread that would be a lot better than multiple threads...but its w/e.
Also, does anyone else think that nothing else will top Android but Android will "destroy" itself? Android has already destroyed itself with me, if the iPhone hits Sprint, I'm jumping ship.

[Q] Why have things been so quiet on the dev front?

Why have things been so quiet on the dev front lately?
There was an initial flurry of activity, and most of the big ticket items were taken care of like rooting, sideloading, enabling tethering, webtop hacks, HDMI mirroring, etc. Thanks to DG and the other devs for that!
However, afaik we've only got 2 ROMs so far. I was hoping to join in the dev community when I get the time, but there doesn't seem to be much of one anymore.
Other moto devices with locked bootloaders do have significantly more activity. I'm tempted to jump ship to the Verizon Thunderbolt now... pity because I really like the Atrix despite it's locked bootloader.
(I don't mean to disparage the work done so far... I realize that one of the reasons activity has slowed down is because the big ticket items have been taken care of
Like I've stated in another post in a different thread. Without an unlocked bootloader, you're going to be hearing crickets in these forums soon, as peoples 30 day trial periods are soon coming up. Sure not everyone is returning it but no dev support means a dead device for those of us that want custom roms. There is nothing more to say. If for some off chance the bootloader becomes unlocked you can always buy it again if you still want to support motorola. But don't keep this device based on hope. Accept that moto screwed you and return it while you still can. I am 7 days to go...
No, I'm not keeping it based on hope. I want to keep it because I really like the form factor of the phone as well as its resolution and battery life. I also wanted a phone with HDMI out.
You don't need a custom kernel to have a ROM - sure that imposes limitations on what you can do. In fact, the GingerBlur ROM proved that you can get some enhancements of newer Android releases without changing the kernel.
I can understand though that fewer DEVs would be motivated to work on a phone with a locked/signed bootloader. However, the Droid X forums seem to be pretty active...
i too am a little disappointed at the shrinking dev base - i've seen some leave. however of AT&T android phones, regardless of the software this one appeals to me the most for its form factor/size (i wanted 4" over 4.3"), front-camera and color (all black). the HDMI out (+enabled webtop) is nice too, along with the screen resolution.
'Tis a shame. From what I've been hearing, the Atrix was a sales flop. So much wasted potential.
Well, I'm sticking with it regardless. I got it on launch day and I plan to enjoy it to the fullest.
The tegra 2 game that I want isn't even out yet.

Maybe this'll be a lesson for Motorola and they might decide to unlock the bootloader after all. I'm this close to jumping ship to the HTC Thunderbolt... I'll probably be grandfathered into their unlimited plan for the foreseeable future.
I tried to get ATT to give me an additional GB by threatening to switch to Verizon, but all they gave me was crappy $25 credit. **** Motorola and **** ATT!!

It does suck we have one person creating roms. Ken is doing an amazing job but only one man can only do so much. I feel that if more devs were here creating roms people would stick around. I plan on keeping mine for awhile since I bought it outright...I'm due for an upgrade soon so well see.

I'm so mad...these devs see all this negative stuff about how people don't like their Atrix, why the hell WOULD they want to develop for it? Everyone saying "i'm leaving" "returning it" "bought htc (whatever)" doesn't help. Keep it positive at least. Nobody wants to do work for a bunch of winers...
If you're going to return it, keep it to yourself. Nobody cares.
I'm surprised Ken's still working for all of you moaners.
A new rule would be nice, say something useful or don't say anything at all.
It's not the devs fault that Moto screwed them, most folks got it on the hint that moto had changed for the better and was going to make the bootloader open.
I can't blame the folks for taking them back.
Hell I have a Captivate, Hardware outstanding ( just like the Atrix, ok minus the GPS ) Software flat out sucks, at least the devs could do something with the Captivate with the open bootloader. It makes it a pretty damn good phone.
Just imagine what could done with the Atrix if the devs could actually do something with it, Kens isn't real happy either as I'm sure his considerable talent is being stifled by Moto, that burns his ass a lot more than folks returning it because moto rammed it home hard.
I'm sitting on couple of upgrades right now and would get the Atrix in a heartbeat IF Moto and ATT would allow it to be open for the devs. In the meantime I'll wait and may switch to Sprint ( even though I've been Orange for over ten years ) for the Evo3d ( think I read somewhere it has Wimax and LTE radios in it ), that thing is looking real nice and about as future proof as it get's in this industry.
Atrix is a bust Motorola really blew it with the locked bootloader. They underestimated the developer communities influence and it's coming back to bite them in their fat greedy ass.

i don't believe this statement for a second. I really don't think this phone is being returned in droves by average users.
in the Eyes of Motorola reliability for 90% of users > support of 10% who want to hack. and a locked down phone is much better for reliability.

Given the specs of this phone and the capabilities I think that the development community represents a higher percentage in the overall buyers base for this phone. Rooting and custom ROMs are becoming more "fashionable" to average users. I'm not saying that there will be an immediate impact within the lifespan of this phone but if Moto continues these methods it will turn around to bite them
look at the other dual core tegra phone(optimus 2x). the devs and the the people there seems to be really happy with their phone now that clockwordmod is available and some custom kernels are already taking into place(optimus 2x is not yet release here in US and some part of europe)
so i think the locked bootloader is one of the major culprit why most devs are leaving atrix and so are some people who wants custom roms for their phone. its a big disppointment really, moto and at&t are [insert word here]
its a good phone but motorola is acting like apple.

Help shed some light on the NS4G ICS wait.

So I don't know about you guys, but I am tired of waiting for ICS. Even more so I am tired of there being not a word spoken about the progress of the update from Google, Sprint, or Samsung. Being that I am still paying the phones subsidized price to Sprint with my monthly payments, I have taken my complaints to their official forum.
http://community.sprint.com/baw/community/buzzaboutwireless/phones-and-devices/samsung/nexus_s_
I encourage all of you that are tired of the silence of these companies to please join me on Sprints forums and voice your complaints. Maybe if enough of us speak up someone will realize it is better to have transparency even when things go wrong.
*I know some of you will say quit complaining and flash a rom. I know what my options are, but that does not excuse these companies for treating us the way that they are. Sprint should not be advertising the Nexus S 4G as receiving "OS updates as soon as humanly possible"*
I've been wondering this for a while.. when the ota update comes out, do you (as in everyone who's waiting for it) plan on using it?
Drop w/e custom ics rom you might have with performance tweaks, themes, status bar toggles, settings you'd never get in a stock rom, etc. etc.?
"treating us the way that they are"? Maybe you've forgotten that Google pulled the first ics update because of issues, and they already have 4.0.5 planned, ics is obviously having issues.
Don't get me wrong, i can definitely understand the frustration with no news about anything at all. I can see your reasoning for complaining to Sprint about that.
i dunno, I'm just curious as to why everyone is freaking out over it. imo they should be pestering Google to release the 4.0.4 source for us to fix some things in our roms, instead of bothering the carrier

Pestering Google would be the more direct approach for sure. But they already got their money for these phones. Sprint on the other hand I am still paying and will continue to pay (if I don't move to another carrier). So Sprint seems to be the more logical source to complain to and maybe if enough people pester them, they will in turn force Google to be more transparent. Because as is, it looks like Google could give a ****.
Ah alright, that makes more sense to me now. Thanks for the response

No, I would never give up my mods & tweaks, etc....but I would love to have a stock rom with all those tweaks, mods, themes, kernels, etc. added on to it. IMHO, stock roms are almost always stable beasts! Honestly, at this point, I am doubting whether or not sprint even cares enough to let us know what's going on with the update. We're now over 2 months since the first official ota was pushed to nexus s and the devs here have already beaten the bloody hell out of sprint in releasing working roms, with brand new radios, bootloaders, and all. Granted, the bootloader & radio were ripped from a leaked rom, but still....we've got over a dozen working roms before the people who have full access to schematics, closed source code, etc. could even get one out.....and that's just plain sad!!
Has anyone gotten this OTA yet? I can't even find one person that has. It's making me think that it was a false leak, maybe that's already well known though...

Umm.. Its called a leak because it was err.. leaked... It was an OTA update that wasn't released yet and still hasn't been. Doesn't make it a false leak, just means they still aren't ready to release it.

Is he possibly talking about the leaked release date of the ota ics update, the one of the screenshot from a Sprint webpage showing Sprint saying the update will be released on February 16th???? I think he might have been asking if anyone got the ota update that this was showing. I personally think that it was a misprint and the update will be released on March 16th, as there is another leaked piece saying the NEXUS S update will be released in mid March.

Exactly.
I should clarify, the substance of the leak-the date if the alleged OTA update-was false.

Looks like Sprint is still sytematically deleting posts of their users and paying customers on their forum.
Go here and see before it is deleted: http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/85388?start=0&tstart=0
"Nexus S 4g and ICS-where is it?
Why were these posts deleted? Why are you still trying to hide what is going on instead of answering my questions? There was nothing in these posts that was your content to delete. markie_b stated that posts that had Sprint property (screenshots) were deleted because of that, but why are these deleted?
POST 1
"@markie_b "the opportune word here is leaked which means someone is putting information out there before it is due and therefore Sprint has the right to delete any information"
Just because it was leaked does not make it any less true. There was a banner at the top of the page when Sprint employees logged into Dara and ISC. It was there for two days at least. Many different Sprint employees confirmed this as true. So deleting the screenshot and links to this image just makes it look like Sprint is trying to hide something. Which you are. Sprint messed up. Plain and simple. Maybe you guys should admit this and try to give us more information than just wait for ICS because we know nothing. We all know you and every other Sprint employee know nothing. You guys should work on changing that. Instead of hiding mistakes and staying silent on what is going on with an update, you should be proactive in letting us know every step of the process you are on in geting the update out. The source has been available for 3 months now, that is more than enough time to get the radios working. As I have said before we are all still paying Sprint for these phones. We deserve to be treated better. On a side note you should realize the Nexus is a developer phone. You are not dealing with your average Android phone users here. We will notice every single mistake you make and come looking for answers every time.
@aysdojo Why would you think it was an internal release? How many Sprint employees do you think still even own an NS4G? On top of that there is no system in place for Sprint to only push updates to Sprint employees. So how would they even accomplish an internal release?
@14knight So would you mind explaining why another post created by mattsholtz23 that asked why Sprint is advertising the Nexus S 4g as "OS updates as soon as humanly possible" were outright deleted and the member banned? There was no "leaked" information in that post. It was a simple question that was deleted instead of just being answered. It look like Sprints policy is to delete any post on here that makes them look bad. Instead of being up front and admitting when they do things wrong. A screen shot has been taken as proof of this post."
POST 2
"I must assume that you have trouble reading, as all proof needed was inside of last post. You must realize that you are asking for proof of things that do not exist, i.e. a way for Sprint to roll out releases only to employees all the while excluding every other NS4G owner on their network. This is like asking someone to prove that Santa Clause does not exist. The proof he does not exist is that no one has ever proven that he does exist. The same goes for Sprints secret employee OS upgrade system that you somehow beleive in. Like I said before, it would have been heard of by now through employee leaks, considering that the OP is about Sprint internal leaks this is something Sprint has a problem with. Also of note is that the one internal rollout you cited from Google had leaked screenshots of ICS (I guess you would have had to of read the article though) hitting Google+ and Twitter within hours of the actual rollout to employees. Further illustrating my point. I would also like to point out that I have answered your questions twice now with you still never answering my one question to you. Why do you believe this was an internal rollout? Any other post by you will be ignored as I must assume you are trolling and are hijacking the thread, considering your last 2 posts have not had a single fact in them and were all opinion, and that you never answered my one question to you. Now back to the real questions I would like to see answers to. I am still waiting Markie_B and 14Knight."
A screenshot has been taken as proof of this post, as have all my other posts."
And another one that was deleted:
"@dreamcat1138 You are correct. Not only does the NS4G have weak radio problems, but it is all Samsung devices that have signal issues. Samsung is notorious for using under powered radios inside of it's handsets. http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus-s-users-hows-your-wifi-strength http://www.androidcentral.com/are-you-having-radio-issues-your-nexus-s-4g-poll http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=34ad876196cb21c4&hl=en http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=72cde4a29b9021c3&hl=en http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...e-wifi-radio-wifi-tethering-crashes-data.html Tweet from Engadget's Mobile editor - https://twitter.com/#!/zpower/status/15800092652998657 http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1714413 http://pocketnow.com/android/samsung-epic-4g-touch-hits-radio-problems-fix-promised http://pocketnow.com/android/epic-4g-touch-signal-loss-fix-coming-soon-user-leaks-it-early http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24345 http://www.theverge.com/2011/12/21/...signal-problem-fix-coming-meter-being-changed Trust me I could go on. Basically all Samsung devices including the Nexus S 4G have horrible radios. Just look at some of the other posts in Sprints Nexus S forum. There are more than one post asking when the radios would be fixed on the NS4G, and they always have the same answer. It's in the next update. Yet with the last 3 update the NS4G recieved that were supposed to fix the radio issues, they never did. And now we are being told it will be in the ICS update. That is untrue as there is no fix for the radio ssues, it is a hardware issue, and the only fix for that is not buying a Samsung phone. Screenshots have been taken as proof of this post."
Here are even more that were deleted.
"Why was the screen shot and link to the image of the leak deleted? Why does Sprint feel that hiding their mess ups is gonna help? It is all over the web, we already know. Why don't you take the time to admit your mistakes and tell us what is going on, instead of deleting posts banning members and deleting pictures. Is this really Sprints stance, to hide facts and lie to it's paying customers? Every person on this Nexus board is still paying for their phones with their contracts. Why are we being treated this way? Screenshots have been taken as proof of this post."
"So you don't believe everything you read on the internet, yet you believe the rumor one guy (not a Sprint employee) posted on this forum that this was an internal rollout. As that one guy (techguy379) is the only and original source that this was an internal rollout, and looking at his other posts, he knows absolutely nothing about what Sprint is doing. Not to mention that if it was an internal rollout wouldn't the Sprint employees who leaked these screen shots have known that, as they are internal employees. I personally know for a fact that one of the screen shot leakers/posters was himself an NS4G owner, wouldn't it make sense that he would have been one of the internal testers, since he owned the phone the test was taking place on and was himself an internal employee of Sprint? The proof that Sprint or any other prvider has never done an internal rollout to test an OS on their employees is that we would have heard about it, on Twitter, Facebook, and XDA. Do you really think Sprint could control leaks from their 18 year old work force. Most companies can't even control leaks from their programers and coders. Come on. You also just proved yourself wrong, as Google is the only company that does internal rollouts of Android to test OS updates. Since they are the ones who make it. There has and never been a single reported case of a service provider (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) ever internally testing an OS update on their work force, and that is because they don't. Really you are just making yourself look silly. I am sure Sprint can take care of defending themselves without your ill informed help."
*update* Looks like nexuss4glies was banned and most posts deleted.
Here is a full account of what is going on at Sprint's forums.

Your sense of entitlement is ridiculous at this point.
These updates take time, there is a massive amount of testing that has to happen before you release an update that could potentially brick hundreds of thousands of phones in one day. When working with a wireless carrier they must also test to make sure the radio is working properly with the network as well, in a variety of environments and situations.
If any problem comes up during these tests it has to start over again, if google has decided that 4.0.5 needs to be developed before they can re-test it, it's up to them. Google has never once stated a release date for ICS on our phones, sprint had it on an internal website for employees only (which could be a fake shot), not out there for public consumption. It's likely they are testing it internally and still awaiting approval somewhere down the line.
Just calm down, or just install the leak if you are really truely that desperate. The OTA will come out in due time and you'll look back at this and wonder how you could be so unreasonable.
They are releasing it as fast as humanly possible. Humans make mistakes, bugs can sometimes regress and appear again. Humans are flawed, humans write flawed code. Would you rather have a broken update or one that's stable enough to roll out to everyone?
Google, Sprint, and AT&T could all handle this better with some actual communication. However, I don't think any of them are holding back ICS intentionally. They are obviously working out issues and when they feel it is ready, they will release it. I'm not sure what the original poster is trying to gain by this crusade.

I am trying to gain some transparency. I never stated that I thought ICS was being held back. But lets face it, there is no money in updating phones. The money is in selling them. I do believe that if more resources were put into development of updates it would result in faster updates. You would think this would be a priority for Google, at least with their flagship line of Nexus phones. Really, if this is what the "Nexus Experience" is supposed to be, then I am not on board. Second Sprint should have never sold this phone as a Nexus experience with "updates as soon as humanly possible" because the NS4G is not updated like the other GSM devices. Even Google has pulled CDMA Nexus's from it's Nexus developer page basically admitting that the update process works differently than the real (GSM) Nexus devices. I have a feeling this will all be happening again in a year when updates are needed for the Verizon and Sprint Galaxy Nexus.
My main goal is to draw attention to Sprint's and Google's mistakes as this whole process couldn't have been any more messed up. The more people that start criticizing these companies when they blatantly screw up the better off we will be in the long run. Staying silent for this long is just not the right way to be treating your customers. Especially when those customers are mainly the developers (Nexus devices are developer phones) who bolstered your OS to the number one OS in the world.

I don't think creating a blog full of screenshots of you ranting at community managers (that have no sway or special information, or right to speak on sprint's behalf) is helping at all.
Explain what you think 'as fast as humanly possible' means in the context of a highly complex and sensitive phone software rollout. There is a lot that could go wrong and delay an update, you know the update is coming. You are not paying a monthly fee for updates to your phone, find me the line in your phone contract that says that. A line on a product's website isn't a contractually binding agreement, maybe false advertising. If you wanted to prove that however you'd need proof that google and sprint engineers weren't even working on porting the software, and we know they are.
IMHO this is a little silly. Why does it even matter at this point? Almost every single ROM that is developed or being developed is ICS. We already have it so why would we need ota?

Yes it is false advertising. The Nexus S 4G was falsely advertised by Sprint to me and everyone else when purchasing it, as receiving "OS updates as soon as humanly possible". As for the definition I would consider it to be defined as the first time they released the OS back in December of last year. Google is to blame for making a shoddy OS that didn't work when it was released. If they would bother actually putting any real kind of money into the development and work force that does design these updates, then maybe it would have worked the first time they released it. But like I said before there is no money in updates, so the development of them will reflect that. Just like we have seen here.
Why you feel the need to protect billion dollar companies, I am not really sure. Any kind of company like these should be criticized constantly, otherwise they will walk all over us, just as they are in this situation. The bottom line is Sprint and Google have screwed up. The more attention that is drawn to that fact, the better. More transparency is needed in Sprint and Google's relationship with their customers and that is not going to be fixed by people like you that are making excuses for them.

And you just lost the argument entirely. Android 4.0 was developed for one phone at the start, the Galaxy Nexus, they stated it would come to the Nexus S eventually. Your argument is that the software is crap because they haven't written the device drivers fast enough for you. You want them to release broken software because you are entitled to fast updates.
Apparently to you 'as fast as humanly possible' means something entirely different, where humans are perfect creatures that never make coding mistakes. And on the off chance that the code was perfect to start it still takes time to TEST, time that has paid off already because they would have released a buggy update.
You can't just hire more engineers and throw more money at something to make it go faster. You assume your monthly WIRELESS USAGE fees go towards software development for one of sprint's 20+ phones. They don't.
Get over your false entitlement, they don't owe you anything.
lol @ people getting angry over ICS not being released yet
.... clearly you didn't have an Epic 4g and have to wait from September to March of the next year for Gingerbread.... we have nothing to complain about here in the NS4g forums
Quite honestly, yes the wait sucks, but it'll be worth it to not have the same type of bugs as NS3G users on TMobile and other international carries are facing. I used OICS then went back to gingerbread in December and have been waiting until the official OTA because I know it'll be better than ANY of the roms we have yet! Yes Sprint sucks, but they're trying to protect us. Also, as aforementioned by snowmanwithahat, at least we aren't like Epic 4G users and waiting 6 months or the other countless people in 2 year contracts not even on GB. Plus, no other phone that isn't a Nexus S has gotten the OTA yet so until then I'm still happy. I will, however, be furious if any other Sprint phone gets it first... Just my 2 pennies...
