[Q] Trophy hotspot or internet sharing capability? - Trophy General

I'm really considering moving from Android-based HTC Incredible to the Trophy. BUT, I have to have a mobile hotspot. On my Incredible, I've been able to "hack" the DUN to enable free mobile hotspot. Of course, I'd love to be able to use the Trophy as a free mobile hotspot. But doing some research it doesn't even appear that the Verizon $20/mo mobile hotspot is available for this phone. Yet Mango was supposed to have provided the capability?
In the end, I'd really like to understand the capability of the Trophy to be used to share its internet access (ideally free Wi-Fi hotspot, or paid Wi-Fi hotspot, or worst case usb tethered). Can anyone clarify this for me?

Are you looking at the GSM or CDMA (Verizon Trophy) version? Tethering is supported in Mango, but the driver must be installed. For Verizon Trophy, that requires a custom rom currently.
As for the tethering, I haven't been paying for it, but I've only been using it since Feb 16th (just after the DFT rom was released to testers).
GSM supports tethering too, but same thing, drivers must be installed to support tethering.

Verizon. Anyone know what custom ROMs currently support it? Is that just USB tether or would a custom ROM also enable it to function as a WI-fi hotspot too?

DFT Freedom V1 for Verizon Wireless supports it (wireless works better then anything I've used on Android, I dunno about USB but who cares!). The rom is still in testing, so you must private message mwang and let him know you are interested in testing.

To you non-rooted users, is 3g hotspot really free?

I'm getting lots of text of people with ota 2.2's trying to get hotspot, I keep telling them that they should be able to get free 3g hotspot but that theres no known root method for official ota 2.2 yet to unlock 4g wireless tethering. Is it true or am I giving them bad info?
i am not rooted and have no 3g wifi hotspot at all.

hmm and your stock 2.2 or 2.1? Its working for me on cm6, in wireless & network settings, under tethering & portable hotspot I check the portable wi-fi hotspot and it turns on
You are giving them bad info
Sprint does not allow 3G Mobile Hotspot without the additional add-on SOC code for $29.99.
I do not get the OP. He asks us if us non-root ota 2.2 users get 3g wifi hotspot but when i post and say i dont he asks what version and ohh i get it and im running cm6.
Duh......You are rooted and have a different rom.
i know i will not get 3g wifi hotspot without sprints add on. my other account has it but my business one does not.
I got 3g hotspot for the first couple months, but I think they were offering it for free.
if you could get it for free on a non-rooted phone why would sprint be charging $30 a month? because you cant.
Before 2.2 I could get 4G mobile hotspot free. 3G did not work.
After 2.2 neither work.
This was expected.
Froyo's built in wifi hotspot works on Cyanogen rom. Used it to download a 600MB coldfusion server install the other day at work since they block executable downloads
Well if you have Cyanogen, you're rooted. If you're rooted, there's any number of ways of doing this.
I *think* the OP's question (reading between the lines) was something like, I heard 2.2 would have native hotspot capability, so is that true in the official Sprint OTA?
If that's what he's asking, the answer is No, as expected. Yes 2.2 has that, but of course Sprint turns it off in their ROM else they couldn't charge for it.
Lemme make this simple:
IT IS NOT FREE.
(For non-rooted, users of the official OTA)
If people are able to use it now, either Sprint's made an error (like they did with 4G tethering when the EVO first launched), or they're going to be hit with a $30 + tax increase on their bill next month.[/thread]

[Q] Droid X Mobile HotSpot Hack

I am currently using a rooted HTC Thunderbolt and I have recently done an upgrade to the programming that allows me to use my Mobile Hotspot on the phone now. This Hotspot actually works with Android tablets and other devices properly.
I know this is an iffy situation and there may be a possibility if I get too carried away that Verizon can start to charge me for it.
That aside, I have a friend who has a Motorola Droid X. I would like to setup his Mobile Hotspot to do the same. I know others have talked about disconnects and such but I just simply want to connect an Android tablet, an iPad, and one laptop at different times.
Is it possible to do a programming update to the Droid X to enable the Mobile Hotspot or do I need to root the phone to be able to use some of this functionality? I can root the phone if necessary but I would think the hack for the Mobile Hotspot shouldn't need root level access.
Any thoughts or ideas on this subject would be wonderful.
It will require root any way you go. The device can't be unlocked, so you have to root, install Clockworkmod, then install an update.zip to patch the hotspot. That being said, don't patch the native hotspot app. It has been stated by a fairly reliable source that VZW can track useage of that app once it's been hacked to give free service. Root, run FroYo VZW software, or use a 2nd-init ROM with Wireless Tether. I would steer clear of a VZW based Gingerbread, as the stock software has data tracking packages in it, and there's no telling if your ROM maker got ALL of it out.
Thanks for the information. I will go about testing that when I get the phone and get a chance to do so.

Root, tether and international sim

So, here's my situation I'm hoping someone can help me
With. I have an ATT S4 that's rooted and the tether hack installed. This works fine for me in the US. I am currently out of the US and figured naturally this should work the same on the carrier for which I bought a local sim for. However, I get an error when I try and activate the tethering, I'm not sure if tethering is normally included with this local carrier and the fact that the tether application is altered and messing it up. Has anyone had a phone rooted with the tether hack that has trouble tethering on International carriers?

I'd try some of the other methods people suggest, like using ES File Manager's Wi-Fi feature.

Cyanogenmod 11S Tethering anonymity concerns.

My cell carrier Cricket Wireless recently merged with AIO wireless and switched from CDMA to GSM. I was given to March to get a new phone because my Galaxy S3 would not work on their network anymore since they switched to GSM.
Since they merged companies they also came out with all new wireless plans.. I was on the old plan which included tethering..
But I just got a OnePlus One since I needed to buy a GSM phone and had to switch to one of their new plans.. The thing is none of their new plans offer tethering, which is a huge step backwards if you ask me.. If they offered tethering still I would gladly pay for it but they just completely screwed us.. THe made us all buy new phones and gimped our plans and stripped tethering out of them.
My OnePlus One will let me tether since its Cyanogenmod even though my plan of course doesn't have tethering anymore . BUT I am concerned that my carrier will find out I am using my Data for tethering..
Like I said if they still offered tethering I would pay for the plan that would include it but they completely stripped it out of all the plans. I need tethering for work so I'm not happy about it.
I Can use Wifi or Bluetooth tethering and it works but Does anyone know how I can protect myself from my carrier finding out that my data is being used for tethering? I've heard of Foxfi but I can already tether I don't need an app to let me tether I just need something to hide the fact I am. I know it has an addon for wifi tethering using a Proxy is this the best way for me to go? Should I get Foxfi and use Wifi Tethering and the addons Proxy option?
Or is there another way?
Thanks.
you can try switching user agent , google it but it usually doesn't work anymore, carriers knew it too
you may create a vpn tunnel but to avoid detection you'll have to operate the vpn from your phone not your laptop so there would be no way they could tell between the two sources of data, all of your traffic must use the same tunnel.

So maybe installing something on my phone to connect to VPN Book or some other free VPN would suffice? and then tethering my laptop with blueooth. ? Thanks.
I have a Oneplus one on Cricket also, and tether with foxfi, been doing so for about a month with maybe 1-2gb of tethering usage. No problems at all here, got foxfi because I was on Sprint, and I needed it then for sure, as my phone was a sprint phone. Foxfi has an option to hide your tethering usage, and I do use that, but IDK what it actually does.

Unlocking wifi sharing on Verizon S7

As the title states, I am looking for a way to use the "wifi sharing" feature that the Galaxy S7 and S7E's come with. Verizon appears to have not liked the idea of us using our phones as wifi repeaters, to tether a wifi signal from one to another. To be clear, I am not discussing a mobile Hotspot to tether your Mobile Data to another device, I am talking about sending a wifi connection from my S7 to another device.
Does anyone havery a work around? I am currently rooted and running stang5litre's V2 ROM. Thanks in advance.
Would likely require a framework edit or replacement (unlikely it's an easy swap) from another carriers rom. There's a tiny chance it's a system.prop or build.prop property that you could edit with a root file editor but I doubt it :/ Out of curiosity what on earth is your usecase for this? I ask this as a genuine question as someone in IT who uses hot spot all the time and I believe Sterling's rom has that enabled on non-tethered plans?
I would also like to know this information.
Could you explain "wifi sharing" a little better?
I have had Samsung phones for a while and have never seen that feature.
Wifi is either connected to a hotspot / router or peer to peer adhoc.
Are you wanting to have a internet connection from cellular or wifi or not at all?
Tagged for continued interest.
I just want to know how you rooted your phone...
