i have a HERM200 and ever since i bought it it had a heating problem. i've noticed that the only thing that causes the phone to get hot is the gsm antenna(calls,edge,3g, anything using the gsm band). i'm using the battery status plugin and it shows that the wi-fi , bluetooth and camera functions don't use more battery power than they're normally supposed to. i've tried this on both a new non-htc battery and the batt that came with the phone, and they act the same. the phone is not new and i don't have a warranty. i run Schap's 4.30 ROM and 1.54.30.10 radio. i tried several other rom/radio combos, but the problem didn't go away. Please Help
some people neglect to understand the fact that these things can bang out 5-20 watts of transmission power, most of which is deflected away from your head via antenna design, and yeh when things run like that they will get hot! quite litterly, as i have noticed that several wireless 802.11 devices (psp's etc) will get warm to hot near an antenna!
this will mostly happen when the transmitter is at maximum output and most 802.11 devices run at around 2.3 to 2.5Ghz which dosent help being near the microwave 5Gig band!
if it makes you feel any better mine runs hot as well during calls and using the wireless networking, its normal
read more carefully. i said that the only thing giving me this problem is the radio antenna. when i'm using the wi-fi antenna or anything else, it doesn't even get warm. but using the radio antenna makes it hot really quick, and makes it start eating a lot of battery power, from 300 mA up. when i end the call the phone remains hot, and my battery goes from 100% to 0% in about 2 hours. so it's clearly not normal
have you tryed to reset the phone after making a call? (just as a test) mainly to see if that forces the GSM transmitter off, it sounds like its still transmitting at full power after you make a call.
this could be caused by a hardware failure or a shorted link either on the board or under a SMD chip, could even be a dirty connection to the antenna.
i have seen the primary cause of death in most electronic equipment is a build up of dust and moisture, it might just be an idea to look up the instructions to dismantle the areas affected and clean them with isopropyl alcohol, and for the love of pete dont use metho, they put impurities in it to make it taste bad for certian reasions, which will leave a bad residue on the boards.
if you do try that, remember to leave it sit for half an hour to let it fully vaporise, the last thing i am sure you want is a explosive Hermies.
hope that heads you in the right direction for repairs, other than that i cant see any thing else short of replacing the transmitter board
btw: i was just using the wi-fi transmitter as an example, but staying hot after making a call is not a good sign, it should cool down
thanks. i will give that a try. hope it sorts things out.
its not hard to understand that if your phone is not stopping to give full power after a call. You know the classic thing, when you are near a TV or a radio, phone causes strange sound when its near. Just go near and see if your phone causes this strange sound after a call (when you made a call but hanged it up).
also open and clean your hardware with very soft tiny brush for dust and chech your antenna connection. My hermes doesnt get hot anytime, even at charging it doesnt get hot, only very very little warm on battery side.
i've charged it completely, it obviously got really hot. usually at this point, i would take out the battery and let it cool off before turning the phone on, otherwise it would get even hotter and eat 300+ mA and drain the battery fast. this time i opened the wi-fi connection and immediately the battery status dropped from 332 mA to 130, and stayed down there. the phone even cooled down a bit. after i've turned off the wi-fi, it started draining and heating again. what can i do? is it a software or hardware problem? i'm using schaps 4.31, 1.47.30.10, have google maps, palringo, opera, tcpmp installed
it seems like a similar problem i had where a shorted capacitor on my FCB, when it switches on and off different circuits its bypassing the faulty component,
not much could be done without a circuit diagram, but certainly the heated component would have stress marks around it related to the heat, look at most of the solder joints through a powerful magnifier glass, or microscope, even if the phone is apart try to touch locate the hot component, thats a dead giveaway but is the most dangerous way to also do it cause you can short out components. yeh you have to try to power it while its in bits!
for me when i found the shorted capacitor i simply removed it, it had got so hot it practically de-solderd it self and i never botherd to replace it since it was only to provide filtering to the FCB leds,
if your unable to locate the faulty component it may be time to source parts from someone who has bricked one or is updating.
i know its a big ask for a microscope, but just about any will do, mine is made from an old slit lamp (eye examination tool) that was being tossed out.
So I have a QI wireless charger I got on amazon. It works perfect. Also use it with nexus 7. Today I noticed when my phone was on the charger, something caught my eye and my phone was shuffling through apps, opening Google now, getting driving directions and such by itself. As if someone was using the phone. Every time I put it on the charger this happens now all of a sudden. Its kinda comical. I laugh and watch what all it does each time. Any idea what could being causing this to happen when placed on the wireless charger?
Your phone is being haunted.
It could be an issue related to overheating. Was your phone got to touch when this happens ?

No, not more than normal using the wireless charging. It only does it when I place it on the charging pad. Its almost instant. As soon as I take it off, it stops. I don't see how the wireless charging could be causing it to perform task on its own. I'm thinking it is haunted.

This happened to me today
I had the same thing happen to me today while using a Nokia qi charger. My phone just started registering random screen presses, which resulted in the device launching my music player and starting to play a song. Just happened the one time, though. Haven't been able to replicate it.
Yeah i've seen it twice before with the orb. I think it has to do with static electricity.
are butesQ
Same thing - I got a phone and a Qi charger from Nokia. All happens while the phone is on the charger
But.... I don't see how heat can produce text that makes sense. Text that has nothing to do with me or my apps. More details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45560693
thats crazy lol...
The only way to keep it from performing random task, is to lock the screen before placing it on the charger. The screen will turn on and off but since its locked, it won't actually perform various task.

static electricity and capacitative touch screens
I have been wondering about this kind of problem, and research is pointing to an electrical interference with the digitizer.
A lot of users have posted that the phantom touches are happening on a localized strip or area of the screen. You can view this as it occurs by enabling "view touches" in developer settings; of course, some report issues so extreme (usually because the phantom touches are appearing across the soft buttons at the bottom of the screen) some might have a considerably harder time accessing this option.
I have noticed that I am able to replicate this issue immediately after charging - however, it is occurring after a wired charge, and only in the last week (I bought an N4 a over a month ago sealed NIB/HW vers.: rev_11). Because the connection between Synaptics digitizer ribbon and main board is solid, and because the touches only appear at the microUSB/charger I/O end of the device, I am left wondering if there is a contact/shielding issue going on, or if it is some other problem allowing static to build up and discharge through the digi.
More research is needed, including reviewing bug reports and logcats. What other diagnostics could be run to get more information on the electrical status of various components to help track the issue? Have any other E960 users experienced a phantom touch issue? How many have seen (maybe) a correlation between charging and the weird screen/digitizer events?
results of testing
attempted fix 1: re-locked the bootloader, then OEM unlocked, affecting a FULL WIPE of the device. RUUed from occam stock (7-zip, fastbooted everything from bootloader to radio by-the-book), beginning with old JB and then up to 4.3. the problem "quieted down" for a full five days, and then flared right back up.
attempted fix 2: pulled the phone apart, disconnected battery. cleaned the digitizer connections with 90% Isopropyl. applied a tinfoil ground, first to the metal chassis (which honestly made my armhair stand up a bit when it turned on), and then to the grounding/shielding covering the NFC pcb. the problem "quited down" for 2 days, then flared right back up.
attempted fix 3: called LG. said, "this phone's f*$#ed; here's the ESN." LG guy tells me the screen's already been replaced on this handset. it was a refurb, "but it weren't our guys what applied the new screen assembly that's giving you all the bollocks" - it was the carrier, and that warranty just went out of date yesterday. THERE IS OIL FROM SOME FINGERS making dodgy contact between the digitizer in the assembly and the chassis, and this results in RADIO INTERFERENCE THAT FLARES UP the phantom touches when there's a perfect storm of COLD (static!), VOLTAGE IRREGULARITIES (mains/cables/municipality!), and USAGE (lots of cache!)
attempted fix 4: can anyone recommend a trustworthy online vendor for a properly grounded screen assembly? I'm going to finish the teardown and replace the full assembly, and when that doesn't work out, I'm going to throw this glass static machine on the ground.
has anyone else been doing testing/have any positive results that stick longer than a business week?
screen going berserk when placed on qi charger
I have had this same issue yesterday, but only on one of my phones.
I have an E-Ceros One (Chinese MTK Octacore phone, twin/clone Ulefone U5) and my old (now my wife's) SG Note 1 (GT n7000).
Bought a qi receiver from eBay for each phone that plugs into micro usb port of the phone and receiver pad lies inside between battery and back case, and a cheap qi charger pad.
Put the receiver in the Note, chuck it on the charger & starts charging - no problems! (other than it does get a little warm when charging)
Put the other receiver in my E-Ceros One, lay it on the charger, starts charging but the screen goes berserk - definitely looks like the electromagnetic field is making the screen digitizer go crazy.
I have sort of found workaround/s though:
- either turn the phone off first and put it on the qi charger, OR
- the qi charger I have is rectangular, and if I sit the phone across the width of the charger, i.e. so the top and bottom of phone are sitting over the sides of the charger with nothing underneath, it starts charging and screen doesn't go crazy. If I wait ~30 secs I can then turn the phone so it sits along the length of the charger and screen doesn't go crazy - I'm thinking the electromagnetic field "settles" after charging for a few moments.
So yes, it's weird
Hello, I'm currently trying to repair a water-damaged G2. The battery was dead and I replaced it. Now the phone works, except for the fact that the backlight doesn't light up. LCD and touch are working fine (with the flash of my phone I can see and interact with the ui), so I'm trying to understand if the led of the backlight deteriorated or if the problem is that it doesn't receive the power.
So my question is: does someone know which connector and which pins carry the power to the backlight? I want to run a simple test and put 3.3V - 5mA to these pins and see if something lights up
I think that the connector for the backlight is this.
http://i.imgur.com/e0z5l9T.jpg
That seems to be the case, since the connectors are labeled A and C. I've just tried to light it up but it remains dead, that is probably it. Thank you. Too bad i have to buy a full lcd+digitizer in order to replace the lcd display.

Im highly irrational when it comes to cooking,l) everything is apples and oranges. This tech stuff is tricky. Who out there can help me with black screen on ZTE PRESTIGE N9132. IT lights up at the beginning of a USB connection. Then backlight goes out. Backlight is limited to the ZTE power up screen, then out!
Hi, my phone with just three weeks of use, my screen stops working suddenly after ending a call. At that moment I see that the screen does not turn on, I press the lock button and I hear the blocking sound, I proceed to remove the battery and turn the phone back on, but the same thing happens. I do not have a boot image (no LG logo, nothing, only backlight for about 2 seconds) when the backlight is turned on the screen, the bottom edge of the screen gets very hot (even faster and much hotter than the CPU) . The phone reacts, I receive calls, notifications, but I have no picture on the screen. Okay, I'm starting to think it's a hardware problem and I disarm the phone to check that the LCD connector is not badly connected, but everything was fine. I assemble the phone and turn it on again and I still have no picture. I leave the phone charging all night and I go to sleep, the next day the screen worked, but only a few minutes, until it became pixelated as in the attached image.
Now the phone does not give image (only backlight) and only sometimes gives me image, but pixelated. I have been investigating, and the only thing I could investigate is that it can be screen (flex ribbon damaged), overheated GPU or CPU, defective GPU. So I do not know what to do (a replacement is not possible). I need to know if the problem is the screen or the motherboard, in case it is the motherboard I can bake the motherboard in the oven to try to perform a reflow of the GPU, just as it happened with the LG G3 when it reheated and this was a solution.
What do you think is the problem? Sometimes when I have pixelated image and I turn off the main screen, the time shows perfectly on the secondary screen without pixelation
I'd first check the ribbon cable and any other cables or connections to make sure that's not an issue. If it is the GPU, please, please take it to a professional who can reflow it correctly. I can not stress this enough -- the risk you are taking by putting your cell phones motherboard into the oven is astronomical. You could essentially take a phone with a GPU issue and turn it into an everything issue. :\ I used to repair Xbox 360s and Playstation 3s for a living and I had a BGA rework station, you have no idea how many times people brought in baked motherboards from attempted home repairs. You can find these services cheap all over the internet. Just make sure you select one with plenty of positive reviews.
Edit: I also don't recommend a heatgun reflow unless you have something to mount the heat gun with so you can attempt to replicate a BGA rework station environment. If you are dead set on repairing this yourself (if it turns out to be GPU that is) -- then I highly recommend doing this instead of the oven. Watch lots of youtube videos first. PM me if you have any questions. I can't promise I'll get back quickly as I have stuff to deal with here hurricane wise.
My galaxy s5 started acting up a month ago. The screen will flicker green/yellow then go black, or stay black entirely. It got a lot worse recently where it will only work hitting the power button 1% of the time. Is this a hardware issue? Or software?
When the screen dims before sleep, it spazzes out too. I've noticed it works better when it warms up from charging too. But still fails to display way too much. It still registers touch when black. I replace the battery a few months ago BTW.
If the device has no hope, can you guys reccomend a good cheap phone?
Put your phone on max brightness & set your phone to never turn the screen off
Leave your phone screen turned on with max brightness for a at least a few hours
If that doesn't solve it then you may need a new screen - it is a hardware fault on these devices with these types of screens
If I were you I'd also follow the advice of

. I'd make sure to run a slideshow in your gallery while having your screen at max brightness though as this may reduce the risk of having burn-in on your screen.
If all fails you could buy a new display for your S5. I did so myself recently as I kept having "snowstorms" on my display when I turned my phone/ the screen on. Worked for me, managed to get a new and genuine one from a reputable seller on eBay. Hope you won't have to resort to the latter though.

@TheFixItMan thanks for the advice, I tried it last night, and it didn't improve at all. Is there any possibility that the device isn't giving the screen enough power? Because I have better success when its plugged in. What do you think caused this to happen after 5 years?
@James160103 Thanks, I tried it and it didn't work. I'm exploring all my options. For $10 more then an OEM gs5 screen, I can get a gs7.
Perhaps it's got something to do with your new battery then, did you buy a genuine Samsung battery? How about sticking the old one back in and seeing if that makes a difference?
Also try using a genuine Samsung power adapter and charging cable.
It's worth a try anyway. Let me know if that made a change.
If it doesn't help you could remove the screen from the phone and press the flex cable from the digitizer downwards to see if it might be a loose connection between the motherboard and the screen that's causing the problem. I'd try that as a last resort though as you could damage your display in the process (replaced the screen myself and managed not to break anything, did it for the first time). There's lots of videos on YouTube (I recommend JerryRigEverything) that could help you out.
While this is unlikely, you may want to try before buying an S7.
Also, try booting into TWRP and playing around with the brightness settings and turning the display on and off again to see if it's some bug with the OS (again, unlikely but it's worth trying).
Please let me know if any of the oprions worked for you or made a difference, cheers.
@James160103 my old battery can't hold a charge, so I disposed of it. My new one has been fine for a few months without any problems. As far as a charger, I have a better charger then the stock, and a thick gauge nylon wrapped cord, that's been doing fine for the last 2-3 years.
The whole display issue isn't just on the OS, when I boot normal or into recovery it stays black, or flickers for a split second.
I did notice that if I hold it in front of my car vent, with full heat. Once its warm it seems to work, just until it cools off. I'm guessing its a hardware issue at this point, but I'll try to check the connection.
Thanks for your help
Facing this exact issue. It has gotten worse now.
