Screen problem: Only backlight and pixelated screen - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hi, my phone with just three weeks of use, my screen stops working suddenly after ending a call. At that moment I see that the screen does not turn on, I press the lock button and I hear the blocking sound, I proceed to remove the battery and turn the phone back on, but the same thing happens. I do not have a boot image (no LG logo, nothing, only backlight for about 2 seconds) when the backlight is turned on the screen, the bottom edge of the screen gets very hot (even faster and much hotter than the CPU) . The phone reacts, I receive calls, notifications, but I have no picture on the screen. Okay, I'm starting to think it's a hardware problem and I disarm the phone to check that the LCD connector is not badly connected, but everything was fine. I assemble the phone and turn it on again and I still have no picture. I leave the phone charging all night and I go to sleep, the next day the screen worked, but only a few minutes, until it became pixelated as in the attached image.
Now the phone does not give image (only backlight) and only sometimes gives me image, but pixelated. I have been investigating, and the only thing I could investigate is that it can be screen (flex ribbon damaged), overheated GPU or CPU, defective GPU. So I do not know what to do (a replacement is not possible). I need to know if the problem is the screen or the motherboard, in case it is the motherboard I can bake the motherboard in the oven to try to perform a reflow of the GPU, just as it happened with the LG G3 when it reheated and this was a solution.
What do you think is the problem? Sometimes when I have pixelated image and I turn off the main screen, the time shows perfectly on the secondary screen without pixelation

I'd first check the ribbon cable and any other cables or connections to make sure that's not an issue. If it is the GPU, please, please take it to a professional who can reflow it correctly. I can not stress this enough -- the risk you are taking by putting your cell phones motherboard into the oven is astronomical. You could essentially take a phone with a GPU issue and turn it into an everything issue. :\ I used to repair Xbox 360s and Playstation 3s for a living and I had a BGA rework station, you have no idea how many times people brought in baked motherboards from attempted home repairs. You can find these services cheap all over the internet. Just make sure you select one with plenty of positive reviews.
Edit: I also don't recommend a heatgun reflow unless you have something to mount the heat gun with so you can attempt to replicate a BGA rework station environment. If you are dead set on repairing this yourself (if it turns out to be GPU that is) -- then I highly recommend doing this instead of the oven. Watch lots of youtube videos first. PM me if you have any questions. I can't promise I'll get back quickly as I have stuff to deal with here hurricane wise.

Help needed: All LEDs on, Display gets bright white -> Boot Loop

Hey there. I've got some problems with my Wizard ...
One of the 6 soldering points of the headphone output was broken (insulate contact). Cause I don't have warranty left I decided to solder this little contact problem on my own, because the soldering point was big enough. I'm very sure that I did not touch anything else than the tin-solder, but now my Wizard freezes sometimes with some weird behavior:
First all LEDs light up, the display lights up to completely white very slowly. After about 20 seconds the flashlight on the back lights up and flickers. At the same time noise comes out of the speakers. After that it reboots.
I cannot reproduce it. It happens when a text message comes in, sometimes it happens when i shut off the speaker through the com menu and sometimes it happens when i enable bluetooth. But not every time ...
FYI, I already did a hard reset, replaced the ROMs with others for this model (Qtek, Mr.Clean, O2 ....). I have checked everything on the PCB very pedantic but I cannot find anything ****ed up.
Somehow I don't believe that my soldering has provoked this problem, but I also don't except this.
Maybe anyone of you had something like this before and solved it? Or has anyone an idea what part could cause this malfunction? Is there some kind of "Error Logging" Tool where I can see the last action (maybe kernel command or something like the event viewer that logs "bluescreens") that is perfomed before it freezes?
Thank you in advance!
TraXter
Just to check. I had this experience of soldering stuff near a IC chip that the heat actually being transferred from the wires into the chip, with high enough temperature to cause problems. So, is there any IC around the part where you solder? Also, many of the new stuff are surface mounted, and enough heat conducted on the wiring will be enough to get some of the connector loose. Just double check that.
Hey again!
I just want to thank you! You saved my Wizard
What I did was I disassembled the Wizard completely, put it together again and tried to start it up. This failed, cause the battery was completely discharged. After giving it multiple pushes with a 9V block battery the Wizard loaded up and since then i did only have a crash when disconnecting and reconnecting the cable (I think due to the low battery voltage atm).
While cable is connected, I can en-/disable flight mode, receive text messages and enable bluetooth without a crash. Seems something went wrong when I put together the Wizard before (thinking of vibration alarm, because when you receive messages it vibrates, if you turn on flight mode it vibrates ....).
Thank you! XDA-Developers is gr8!

No image after lcd replacement

Hi, I've unfortunately broken my hd's lcd.
I've replaced it at home, but after I turn on the device, it vibrates one time, then I hear the htc opening sound, but there is no image or light.
So I guess the device itself is functional, but there is a problem with the lcd.
Somebody told me, that if I put on it a new stock rom it would fix the problem.
But when I connect the hd with an usb cable to my computer, nothing happens, there is no connection estabilished, the computer doesn't see the hd.
When I plug the device to charge, it charges.
So how can I replace the rom on my hd? :S
I've also tried to update the device from an sd card, I've formatted an 8gb sd card under win7,put on it an official rom, with the device turned off pressed the vol down button+the power button, then release the power button, the the vol down button, then press the power button.
But it's the sam: vibrateing when turning on,then after 30secs the htc sound, but no update..
Have you taken your HD apart again and checked the physical connection of the ribbon connectors for the LCD and Digitizer? They have to be pushed all the way into the socket and the sockets must be locked in a couple of different methods depending on the connection type. If they aren't in properly, you would probably experience the problem you've described.
Before trying to explore software issues, make 100% sure that you don't have a hardware issue.
I had the sync connection issues, then I found this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524619 I followed the instructions and was able to get connected again. It's worth a try.
if you change the lcd and don't get any image on the device
I would think
the lcd you got is dead
or the image display port of your motherboard is dead

I also have the same no image issue. I have also tried a second LCD with no luck. Once I was able to connect to the phone again, I flashed the stock rom from HTC, still no LCD. Tried leaving the battery out overnight, still nothing. I have been able to get the phone display to work by putting the phone body minus battery by an exterior window for about 1/2 hour, its cold in my neck of the woods. Pop the battery back in and I have a screen again, for about 5 minutes... One time I was able to get the phone to stay on for over an hour by doing the above steps and then right after putting battery back in cool phone, I immediately synced up with my PC and it stayed alive.. I don't know what the deal is.
Update for those who care. I have been playing with the cold phone/battery and have found out the following:
Cold battery/warm phone = no LCD
cold phone/warm battery = no LCD
cold phone/cold battery = working LCD every time.
I have also been able to use the phone, after both batt. and phone are cold, for as long as I want as long as it stays active and does not go to sleep. The phone will not come back on if I let the screen turn off by itself or if I push the power button to turn it off unless I cool it off again. I plan to call HTC in the morning to see about a repair, but have had fun playing with this weird situation.
So,I've opened up my HD and found out, that the data cable that is connected to the volume button has been detached from it.
Is it possible to solder it back without changing the piece?
My hd is still in the srvice shop for a price offer, but after I will get it back, I will try your cold lcd/battery thing.
Will it work with the fridge too? Because it's getting warm up here
So,if I undertand you correctly: after the lcd and the battery is cold, the lcd works, and if you connect it with the pc, it's stays alive until you put the screen to sleep, than it's dead again?

The cold trick has worked every time for me. I only hooked it up and had it on while connected to the pc once, but I think it should work again.
On another note, I heard back from the repair center and they wanted to replace the LCD (for $300) and I then explained to them that the LCD was not the problem and then was informed if it was indeed the mainboard that needed replacement then it would cost even more... I tried to plead with them that it is a common problem with HD's and even though the warranty is void I think they should cover it, didn't work.. It's times like these that I curse my curiosity and ability to repair my own things.

As far as the fridge goes, it should work just don't leave it in too long.. if it gets too cold then you might get condensation when it heats back up.
Forgot to add that I got my HD back from HTC yesterday. Got excited thinking they went ahead and fixed it for me!! But no... It worked just fine for about 5 hours after I unboxed and put my battery back in. Was turning on and off like normal, then after bout 5 hours it was back to the usual working phone with no LCD. I did notice that the screen was pulsing, for lack of a better term, it would dim then come back up to full brightness, then dim and repeat. There has got to be a way to fix this! (other than the mainboard replacement)

Touchscreen problem

Hello.
I was working outside for more than 8h and at that time phone was lying in the sports bag covered with some clothes. When I turned it on the battery temp. widget showed 5 degrees Celsius (in fact it was cold).
The first problem was the screen - it showed some artifacts, random RGB pixellation when waking up and while writing SMS screen just froze and only touchscreen worked, had to turn the screen off and back on to get it work.
After warming the phone to 20 degrees the screen started to work properly with no problems but 1 hour ago something started to piss me off. Touchscreen started to self-detects touch points even when I don't touch the screen. It appeared for the first when I slightly pressed "delete character" button (I use better keyboard 8). That maked touch screen to work horribly and pressing random keys near delete, 3 or 5 times per sec for a second or two...
I've already tried factory reset and even reflashing the ROM (stock nordic 2.3.4) but the problem is still occuring.
Any advice? ...
Common problem with no apparent fix.
A way you can make it better is to install Swype, which is how I've got around the same problem on my phone.
I get it in the morning after sleeping in my 24 degrees room everynight...
Normally have to bring it out of my room for 5 minutes or so and allow it to function again.. If not a restart normally works..
Phone works fine if im using it while the aircon is on though, presumably because the phone is generating heat to counteract the cold ._.
Yesterday I got pissed off, grabbed the phone and started to heat it with hair dryer and then polished it with a cloth and everything is right with the touchscreen (maybe there was some dried sweat on the screen I know some guys who had this problem and sweat was the one who caused it).
But random pixellation and screen freezes are back. I think the problem is with the screens' ribbon cable because sometimes when I slide my phone it freezes for a few secs. I remember I've slided the phone when it was very cold, maybe something wrong happened with the ribbon cable. I have to disassemble the phone and check it out.
Sounds like a trace amount of water damage perhaps from condensation while in your bag.
Fortunately NO!
The problem was with the flex cable connecting down part of the phone with the upper part. It's partially broken, probably it happened because of cold wires and my sliding.
This ribbon connects everything from the upper part (LCD, camera etc.) so it needs to be replaced. I'm gonna see if any of my towns' repair centers are able to fix it.
edit: Professional diagnosis:
Interrupted flex cable connecting upper part with the bottom part - two most left pins broken, screen shows constant "random RGB pixellation".
Bringed my XPLAY to the authorized SE repair center and waiting for the ppl there to fix my beauty...
ribbon that connects everything from the upper part to the lower part? do you mean the long and wide ribbon that is kinda folded when you open your phone? IS IT? jeez that's my problem, too. I haven't been using my phone for more than a week now.

[q] dead htc hd2

hello all
my htc frozen when i was playing a game (Offroad Legends),and because it wasn't responding to anything,i pulled the battery out.
Since i put it back,i can't turn it on anymore. the battery was at 57% when i started playing,so after 20 mins of game,i think it was at ~ 45% when frozen.
when i try to turn it on,it vibrates for a half of a second, and nothing more
I have magldr 1.13, and pixeldroid 4.2.2 carbon v1.0
any chance to revive it?
any suggestions?
(sorry for my english)
Check battery pins & especially the centre one as they are easily put out of position.
I suspect it heat related BGA failure of cpu.
You can try chilling it by putting it in a sealed bag & popping it in the freezer for 20 minutes then remove & try booting while still cold.
Sometimes the contraction when cold causes the BGA (solder balls on cpu) to make contact thus work but professional reflow of the chip is needed if this is the problem your facing.
If does turn out be BGA you best looking for a good used handset with dead digi as they come up often & when a good one which looks unmolested turns up buy it & donor mainboard. Other parts can be resold making the cost very minimal.
i did what you suggested, but no luck, same prob. just little vib at 2 sec of keeping power button pressed
NEWS : i dissasembled it,and i heated the main board with hair dryer, and now it vibrates normally when power on,but on display is only a dim light, and display is black
edit 2 : powered in bootloader mode,connected to usb,and flashed a spash screen.it worked.but display not working...
Could be video related feed on mainboard or more likely damage or incorrect fitting of lcd ribbon to mainboard.
best bet is replacement mainboard if nothing else has been damaged, even experienced reflow work on these boards has low returns of long term worthwhile repair.
Solved
BGA FAILURE
3 gsm services confirmed
Sold it at a price of a working one
Now got XPERIA X10i

S4 freezes, reboots and lines on screen

My S4 keeps rebooting and I think it's a hardware issue but I do not know exactly which part might be the problem. It did slip out of my hand and dropped on my desk (not that hard) but it did not show these symptoms until a few days later so I'm not exactly sure if the drop is the cause of this issue.
It does not necessarily reboot at the Samsung boot screen all the time. It sometimes reboots at the Samsung logo screen or after 1-2 mins at the home screen. It has also frozen at the Download mode screen, so I don't think it's an OS issue or a bad app.
I've already tried a different battery (new one I just bought recently) and I don't think it's a Power button issue because as I initially thought it could be problem with the Power button so I had removed it and had planned to solder a new one. Without a power button, it still freezes/reboots. I did notice sometimes after it has frozen, when I try to charge it nothing happens (no red light) but once I pull the battery out and put it back in, it charges again. Also sometimes when it freezes, I have lines on the screen, but once I take out the battery and restart, it's ok.
I would hazard a guess that the LCD or digitizer might be the problem (but I don't to waste the money if it ends not being that)? The only reason why I say this, is because I managed to get to the home screen and enabled USB mode (screen was off after) and it did not reboot or freeze for more than 5 minutes (longest so far) until turned on the screen and seconds later it rebooted.
Can anyone advise whether it is likely the LCD that is the problem? I plan to get a new phone soon but wouldn't mind fixing this if the parts are fairly cheap.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Answer me this: If your computer freezes, would you suspect the screen? I mean, the screen's sole purpose is to display stuff. So why would the screen cause the computer to freeze?
Same story, different device.
Your issue will most probably require a motherboard replacement, as I don't think you can find the faulty parts separately. I suspect either CPU or GPU.
