Hi xda community!
Today was the third time I failed trying to root my Verizon Stratosphere and I came here for some help.
Almost all guides I read require me to install the zagid driver and then run Heimdall, detect the phone and.... well, I never get pass that so I can't remember.
Zagid seems to install correctly the drivers. The device I select is named "Gadget Serial". After the driver installation I can see the device in Device Manager correctly under "libusb (WinUSB) devices".
After the driver installation, I plug in my Stratosphere and run Heimdall (either via command line or through the frontend). Heimdall always says "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device."
I tried uninstalling WinUSB and installing it again. Nope.
Unplugged and plugged my phone. Nope.
Rebooted my phone after driver installation. Nope.
Rebooted PC after driver installation. Nope.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Samsung Stratosphere is Verizon's EPIC 4G version. I think there are only two differences: the battery is bigger and there is no camera button.

No.... the stratosphere has its own forum. We have a completely different phone. You will easily brick your phone and have a fancy paperweight if you try anything for the epic. I won't even start on the differences. If you are so interested in bricking your phone, enter download mode, Odin 'el30 prerooted' with repartition, and enjoy your paperweight.

I searched the forums for the Stratosphere and didn't find a dedicated forum. Could you please point me to the right direction?
I'm not implying that Stratosphere is better or not compared to EPIC 4G, I simply read somewhere that they are based on the same phone.
Why would I brick my phone? Is there a known problem with rooting it?

There is a known problem with using epic 4g methods as it is not the same phone. Just Google Samsung stratosphere forum. I'm not saying that one is better. I am saying that any epic root methods will brick your phone.

I see.
The guides I found are specifically talking about Verizon Stratosphere. I only posted it in EPIC 4G's forums because I didn't find a dedicated one for Stratosphere.
I search more to find a more relevant forum.
Thanks.

Rootzwiki has a pretty decent stratosphere forum. I can't link to it as it is not allowed o link to other sites, but Google it.
Also, I read through a few of their tutorials, and no one said to use heimdall. They all say to use Odin.

you use basically use odin to flash cwm then with out rebooting, use the new recovery to flsh either a custom colonel or just superuser.
it is an identical process as the epic.

The usb port on the stratosphere is at the bottom of the phone away from the headphone jack while the epic enjoys the clutter all on top.

Nexus One, it has it built into Amon Ra's recovery, I believe. Well, the custom "firmware" part for the PS3, but the downgrader hasn't been ported yet.
Yeah, the downgrader open source is being worked on, but the jailbreak (for the ps3) is out. I was hoping that in the near future it would be ported to the glacier

Go to the Find Your Device field near the top of the screen and type in Galaxy s i9000 and click on the highlighted Samsung Galaxy S I9000 choice it presents. I strongly suggest reading the sticky noted guides in the General forum there first, starting with this one: Galaxy S I9000 General **STICKY THREAD** Read here first!

Wait what what? Is that possible to downgrade the PS3 without soldering anything? I'm about to sell my PS3 with system V4.0 because I thought I had to buy a chip and solder in order to downgrade. I know this is the wrong place, but I literally have been searching for days and never heard about that. I just put my PS3 up for sale on craigslist and plan to sell it this tuesday. Any information before then, or even pointing in the right direction would greatly be appreciated!
I'm a beginner with a rooted verizon fascinate gt-i9000. i tried to upgrade to darkys 9.3 rom from superclean via rom manager from the marketplace. my phone has been stuck on the boot screen with the samsung logo and gt-i900 on it. i have tried flashing to darkys 9.2 and the original i9000 rom with odin but it still goes back to the same screen. also i tried to flash cwm but it fails on odin. ive looked at many forums and tried to follow their instructions but nothing has worked. i can only get to the download mode. please help!!!
Hi,
I had a similar problem with my Samsung galaxy s i9000, flashed the wrong rom using Odin.....i tried stuff but made it worse as i am very much a learner with rooting & flashing.... as long as u can get it into download mode means it is fixable.... i ended up taking mine to a phone repair shop in.Derby & the bloke re flashed it for ¢30... i since bought a HTC desire & rooted it then downloaded rom manager which really is a safe way to flash roms. Rom manager can partition your SD card which is needed, then you download Roms directly in rom manager then it installs them.automatically....... be careful using Odin because u really can brick your phone if your not sure about how to use it........good luck

There's no Verizon i9000.
i9000 = GSM, carriers outside North America
i500 = CDMA, Verizon (USA)
Darky's = i9000. Totally incompatible.

Yeah, you have this sorta backwards. Odin is what makes it damn near impossible to brick the phone (now that we have full restore sets). ROM Manager doesn't work properly on the Fascinate, and no matter what phone you're on, it won't prevent you from wrecking your phone by flashing A ROM FOR A DIFFERENT DEVICE (which is what the original poster did).
What he needs to do is get into download mode and apply one of the full-restore Odin packages (including pit file).

Just to make sure to use proper rom.

Download odin and the files in this post. That will get you basic froyo. From there you have lots of options on what roms you can flash.

I know this isn't a question that fully pertains to the epic but I'd like to know is the odin tool a standard across all newer samsung phones? I had a hero before this phone and I remember I was always worried about bricking it. Maybe it was a lack of experience with rooting and flashing but I am much more comfortable modding this phone. I guess it would be a huge selling point for the within for me if I knew it would be as easy as this phone to mod. Thanks in advance.
I'm about to start modding my friend's Fascinate and they use Odin, as well. I'm pretty sure it's standard. Best way to check is to see the how to root threads for all the new Samsungs. Sadly, our one-click looks more efficient than others. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to save her data before flahing a ROM. They don't seem to get that one reboot before having to flash and wipe all data. Maybe a nandroid before will be the answer. I'll find out soon enough.

I know with the old Samsung Moment we used a piece of software from Samsung called SWUpdate. To be honest it is a LOT easier to use and far more idiot proof than Odin. I know there is also a version released for the Epic (I used it to update to official Froyo) and I am not sure why devs have not used that instead. It literally walks you through step by step with words and pictures (Remove the battery by taking off the back cover, reinsert battery, boot into download mode by pressing x,y, and z, etc.) Each step on a separate screen with photos and big "Next" button you had to hit after doing the instructions. The only "hard" part was finding the sub-sub-sub directory the stock .tar was in and replacing it with what you wanted to flash. Still, not very complicated and I never had a single problem getting the phone to flash to stock.
Hello XDA community,
Lend me your ear..eyes.
I have relentlessley been trying to find a way to flash my phones rom to a ICS port but scouering the internet, hard it has been (Yoda Voice).
I am hoping that someone who has been able to sucessfully flash ICS on a Bell Vibrant [i9000m] can point me in the right direction. I see alot of i9000 guides but we all know how those end up when you try to follow them on a phone with just slight differences and I really dont want to have a *epic fail* moment and be forced to have to dust off the old Motorolla Milestone.
Whoever can help me will get will get the feeling of accomplishment and be labeled as just a nice guy, or girl.
So please XDAers show me how to use the force. The force of ODIN if necessary

Flashing Onecosmics I9000 should be fine, but this is not development so it was not supposed to be flashed here, worst case is if you flash onecosmics you will just have to flash a button mapping fix and thats it

I should have been more specific but thank you for the response. I need to actually be able to get into CWM before I can flash the ICS build. The problem here is that I have CWM on my phone but when I attempt to boot to the recovery I get an error stating 'E: Failed to verify whole-file signature' & 'E:signature verification failed' 'installation aborted'.
This leads me to believe that the current ADSR I have flashed to this phone wont let me load CWM . This is where things get a little bit tricky, the net is all over the place with explanations on how to get a recovery that might allow me to get into CWM. To be honest though I could be looking at this completely the wrong way.
Any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks for your help ahead of time

You might actually have better luck posting this in the i9000 section. I believe the t959 and the i9000m are more dissimilar than the i9000 and the i9000m. Since t959 roms don't work on the i9000m, I would think not many i9000m owners would check this section. Best of luck in finding your answer.

Can the Sprint Samsung Epic 4g on gingerbread 2.3.6 be rooted?
Hello to anyone who knows about rooting. I work in medicne so I can figure out anything with the human body but not with rooting my Samsung epic on gingerbread 2.3.6. I have tried different developers, different sites, and read till I went crazy. The lingo gets old. It would be like me talking to the common public about the interpetation of hemodynamic readings and congestive heart failure. Anyhow, I rooted my epic 4g before it automatically upgraded to gingerbread...then it froze...I researched and unbricked it with a program everyone said did not work...but it worked to unbrick my phone even though it was supposed to root my phone...it just reset it to where it was usable again. When I try to go to certain websites for rooting files to download...they seem to be missing...hmmmm. So again, can the samsung epic 4g on gingerbread 2.3.6 be rooted? If it can, please direct me to some site...so far...I have tried about 5 different sites...no luck. It is also very hard to find anything specific on gingerbread 2.3.6 on rooting...alot of info. on the other versions.

there is a thread that tells you a 3 step method. if you wanna flash another rom then here is what I did. Download the rom you want and put on the sd card. download odin if you do not already have it. download cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5. open odin uncheck every thing even reboot. then click pda put the cwm.tar into the pda. make sure your phone is in download mode. by holding the #1 button on the keyboard and the power button. plug the phone in to the usb. a yellow com box should pop up. hit start it shouldn't take long but it will complete and the phone will still be on. unplug your phone and take the battery out. put the battery back and turn on using the 3 finger method. ( vol. down, camera and power button) then wipe data, wipe cache, go into advance and wipe dalvik. press the back button click then click install zip from sdcard. click choose zip from sd card and then choose your rom and install that should be all. if you want to stay stock and just be rooted you need to download superuser.zip the link is found in the first video. you do the first part the same but instead of wiping every thing you go start into install zip and then choose the super user zip. reboot your system. then you have to go into the root explorer and delete a file but I cant remember the file name. but then you turn your phone off and then you have to odin cwm again. then you will be rooted. i will edit this when i can remember the file name unless some one beats me to the punch. i hope this helps if not pm me and i will try to help i am going to be flashing back to stock and re rooting to day so..
Thanks...I will try it again.

i havent rooted stock gb. so forgive me. but is system/etc the correct path for the file that needs to be deleted? also better to necro rather than make a new thread for this.
I never deleted that file. I just odin'd cwm5 with reboot unchecked, then unplugged cable, poppef battery out and in and flashed a ROM. That file install-recovery.sh is still on my phone and in the directory you specified.

You don't need to unless you plan on staying stock. Otherwise just flash clockwork mod boot into it and flash a custom rom.

The phone will remain stock or I would just flash fc09 deoxed. It's for my wife I might in the future upgrade her but this is her first android so I'm trying to go slow with it and not barrage her with too many changes.
