Can the Sprint Samsung Epic 4g on gingerbread 2.3.6 be rooted?
Hello to anyone who knows about rooting. I work in medicne so I can figure out anything with the human body but not with rooting my Samsung epic on gingerbread 2.3.6. I have tried different developers, different sites, and read till I went crazy. The lingo gets old. It would be like me talking to the common public about the interpetation of hemodynamic readings and congestive heart failure. Anyhow, I rooted my epic 4g before it automatically upgraded to gingerbread...then it froze...I researched and unbricked it with a program everyone said did not work...but it worked to unbrick my phone even though it was supposed to root my phone...it just reset it to where it was usable again. When I try to go to certain websites for rooting files to download...they seem to be missing...hmmmm. So again, can the samsung epic 4g on gingerbread 2.3.6 be rooted? If it can, please direct me to some site...so far...I have tried about 5 different sites...no luck. It is also very hard to find anything specific on gingerbread 2.3.6 on rooting...alot of info. on the other versions.

there is a thread that tells you a 3 step method. if you wanna flash another rom then here is what I did. Download the rom you want and put on the sd card. download odin if you do not already have it. download cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5. open odin uncheck every thing even reboot. then click pda put the cwm.tar into the pda. make sure your phone is in download mode. by holding the #1 button on the keyboard and the power button. plug the phone in to the usb. a yellow com box should pop up. hit start it shouldn't take long but it will complete and the phone will still be on. unplug your phone and take the battery out. put the battery back and turn on using the 3 finger method. ( vol. down, camera and power button) then wipe data, wipe cache, go into advance and wipe dalvik. press the back button click then click install zip from sdcard. click choose zip from sd card and then choose your rom and install that should be all. if you want to stay stock and just be rooted you need to download superuser.zip the link is found in the first video. you do the first part the same but instead of wiping every thing you go start into install zip and then choose the super user zip. reboot your system. then you have to go into the root explorer and delete a file but I cant remember the file name. but then you turn your phone off and then you have to odin cwm again. then you will be rooted. i will edit this when i can remember the file name unless some one beats me to the punch. i hope this helps if not pm me and i will try to help i am going to be flashing back to stock and re rooting to day so..

Thanks...I will try it again.

i havent rooted stock gb. so forgive me. but is system/etc the correct path for the file that needs to be deleted? also better to necro rather than make a new thread for this.

I never deleted that file. I just odin'd cwm5 with reboot unchecked, then unplugged cable, poppef battery out and in and flashed a ROM. That file install-recovery.sh is still on my phone and in the directory you specified.

You don't need to unless you plan on staying stock. Otherwise just flash clockwork mod boot into it and flash a custom rom.

The phone will remain stock or I would just flash fc09 deoxed. It's for my wife I might in the future upgrade her but this is her first android so I'm trying to go slow with it and not barrage her with too many changes.

Jaden, Odin back to stock (look in the Noob guide by S14274N) it has everything you need, Once you are in stock , then root the phone (use superoneclick, it is easy), then download Rom manager, then you will go back into download hit update packages and it will be rooted, From there you can flash any rom you want. Your phone is ok, you need just to go into Download and Odin back to stock first.
You probably can just restart your phone, don't think any changes were even made...long press the power button until it restarts.
Hahaha no offense and not trying to troll but guys please ODIN before any flash of rom, kernel, mod, theme, anything. That way you dont flip out when **** goes wrong. I did,so do many other flashers, and so should you pr anybody else. Also, do a backup with recovery before flashing....

Yeah its not really necessary, I think the last time I used ODIN was before flashing the Nero beta. It will keep things fresh and mostly issue free, but if you know what you're doing you really shouldn't have to do it for every flash.

Warning about ODIN Packages and Such

I have heard of a lot of reports from people that loose functionality of their radio and even more drastic problems after flashing some ODIN packages...
Now, i don't know which ODIN package is responsible, i know that bubby323 did make a faulty package, somewhere down the line..
ODIN is a last resort... Us here can get you up and working most of the time without even having to open up... ClockWorkRecovery is our friend
If you absolutely need to ODIN, What i suggest is going into the package with 7-zip, and checking whether or not there is a modem file... if there is, delete it... That's just my advise
Also, i have had a couple of reports of people getting fried from with CWM.... As of right now, i would tread lightly in there.... Backups and Restores should be fine, but don't do anything crazy in there If you do need to do anything does not require edify (3.0+) scripting, i suggest using the blue recovery...
This is all just my own personal opinions and such, do whatever you want
Thank you for the warning

Yes, you can but it's a pain in the butt. Go to this thread and then download the original stock firmware. Make sure USB debugging is turned on also.
To install the file you need to have HTC Sync installed and running. Double-click the file and it should recognize the phone and start installing after some input from you.
If you get a USB error, try booting into the bootloader and installing the exe in the same manner.
I just did this last night because I was in the same situation. It works.
Now you can re-root.

It's still the same update. Whether I installed it through an OTA update or from the bootloader doesn't matter.
You guys can get into the bootloader right? Take one of those modified "official" updates, rename it to PG06IMG.zip and flash it from the bootloader. Then do my first post and flash to Froyo so you can root again. May be worth a shot.

Unless you have an engineering bootloader, like after you rooted, you can only flash an an un modified pg0610.zip from htc. So any one who took an over the air update is SOL on that front. Best hope now is that the evo 3d root can be applied here

[Q] Are all samsung phones this easy?

I know this isn't a question that fully pertains to the epic but I'd like to know is the odin tool a standard across all newer samsung phones? I had a hero before this phone and I remember I was always worried about bricking it. Maybe it was a lack of experience with rooting and flashing but I am much more comfortable modding this phone. I guess it would be a huge selling point for the within for me if I knew it would be as easy as this phone to mod. Thanks in advance.
I'm about to start modding my friend's Fascinate and they use Odin, as well. I'm pretty sure it's standard. Best way to check is to see the how to root threads for all the new Samsungs. Sadly, our one-click looks more efficient than others. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to save her data before flahing a ROM. They don't seem to get that one reboot before having to flash and wipe all data. Maybe a nandroid before will be the answer. I'll find out soon enough.

I know with the old Samsung Moment we used a piece of software from Samsung called SWUpdate. To be honest it is a LOT easier to use and far more idiot proof than Odin. I know there is also a version released for the Epic (I used it to update to official Froyo) and I am not sure why devs have not used that instead. It literally walks you through step by step with words and pictures (Remove the battery by taking off the back cover, reinsert battery, boot into download mode by pressing x,y, and z, etc.) Each step on a separate screen with photos and big "Next" button you had to hit after doing the instructions. The only "hard" part was finding the sub-sub-sub directory the stock .tar was in and replacing it with what you wanted to flash. Still, not very complicated and I never had a single problem getting the phone to flash to stock.

Not a dumb question at all. But as far as I know, PRLs still can't be flashed without a computer and a program called QPST - there is an old thread about it somewhere around here that provides a full guide, if you'd like more information. I don't have the link handy, but try googling "xda how to update your prl epic 4g" - that should return the correct page.

Ok copy the link. Tried everything explained there. Most outdated. On CM10 at least, you must dial *#*#8778#*#* (instead of what was listed) to get to the hidden menus and on Win7, Control Panel/Device Manager there's no ports listed. I did however see under general properties of USB H (which was where my phone was hooked to in charging mode, i.e. not in USB Storage) that the port was listed as Port_#0001.hub#0003. I tried single digit numbers, 4 digit numbers, but to no avail at adding a new port. So that was an hour wasted. I don't know, maybe it's not worth the trouble. I even tried the CM9 multiboot FC09 method and from CWM the zip file starts to install and then aborts every time. Maybe the CM folks will come up with a new method for updating PRLs in CM10.

Oh, good point about the outdated info - it still works on older roms, but I forgot to check whether it worked with CM10 (to be honest, I was thinking about the temp boot and forgot to mention it). I would guess that the easiest method would be the temp boot (I know that works, as that's how I connected with QPST in the past), but we would need to figure out why it isn't working for you (for example, is it incompatible with the newer CWM included with CM10, or is there some other problem local to your phone? I'll try the temp boot, if I can get it to work then we can start troubleshooting your setup, and so forth).
So if you want to try to figure this out, I'll do what I can to help. If you just want to update your PRL (to the latest official, rather than a corporate or non-standard PRL), then you can flash the crespo patch and modem, boot up and dial *22803 and *22805 (one updates data profile, the other does PRL, but I can't remember which), then flash an epic modem and reflash CM10 (in that order, unless you prefer to odin the modem - the crespo patched kernel is what allows modem flashing in CWM). Not the most convenient method, but it is a more recent method that definitely works. But like I said, I'll try to help you figure out QPST if you still want to use a non-standard PRL - just let me know

Thanks! Actually I just want the ability to keep up todate the most current PRL. So whatever is the easiest...I was really hoping the FC09 sdcard boot was going to work. Do you think that can be modified for CM10?

Bbelos suggested a method in Development requiring flashing a CM9 kernel to get the sd card boot to work.

Wow, what a doozy of a work around: flash back to an ICS kernel, so I can temporarily boot into GB, update, then flash back to JB. Certainly hope a JB fix can be made...otherwise I'm out of luck when PRLs change.

I haven't tried it yet, but you could try to flash a temporary ICS boot kernel, like from Marsucant's Nyan Kernel. Tried it, didn't work
Edit: Link dead in thread, here it is: http://marcusant.com/nyankernel/epic/Nyan5-test1.zip
Edit 2: Stuck at Samsung screen, maybe not

Update PRL and Calibrate Sensors for CM9 / CM10
Updated to work with CM10. For those of you who already have the multiboot files on your sdcard, I have supplied an "upgrade" zip that contains only the modified files. It is not a CWM flashable zip, just extract the files to your /sdcard/multiboot/FC09 directory.
The updated v4 files will still work from CM9, but CM9 users do not need to update at this time unless you want to
