Unlimited user on AT&T? Throttled? Change your SOC code! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Today, AT&T has finally become somewhat less unreasonable with regard to their throttling policies!
So, if you're an unlimited data user suffering from stupid throttling woes at usage less than 2GB in a billing cycle, you can breathe a slight sigh of relief. But here's a little tip if you think 3GB still isn't reasonable enough for you:
Go to your local AT&T store and get the IMEI from one of their LTE Note display units by dialing *#06#
Then, call customer service and let the agent know that you bought an LTE Note from on the internet or some other third party, and request that your service be enabled for LTE usage. Specifically, that your SOC code be changed to LTEDPPB. They will ask you for your device's IMEI. Provide them the IMEI you got from the display unit.
Now, you can continue to enjoy "unlimited" data, and not have to worry about running into any speed limits until 5GB instead of 3!
Enjoy!
P.S. APN's that work on this new plan:
pta
Phone
wap.cingular
Google those APN's for the proper settings, and you're all set!
P.P.S. Don't use the "Broadband" APN, because that's used only for tethering, and that would raise red flags on your account. Not sure it would work anyway. You should still be able to tether just fine with any of the other APN's though.

I have unlimited plan, but i bought the international copy which H+
Should I do anything?
I use tethering apps a lot!

I'm on that data plan and you can still get throttled but I'm assuming you now have more options for APN switching

so basically you are spoofing the imei to circumvent their system and enable you to defraud them

Ha ha ha, good point! If they are going to throttle why can't they at least make it the same amount across the plans?
Does anyone know if this causes a change to the agreement? IE we lose any rights over law suit from the old plan? I don't like suing but I like knowing that I CAN and I like them knowing people HAVE sued

I'm using the "broadband" APN, but that's because I'm using a Unlimited iPad SIM. I don't think this will work for me. I guess I could use a IMEI from a LTE tablet such as the JetStream?

First of all, you don't need to use any apps on your international Note in order to tether; tethering is baked right into your wireless settings by default.
Secondly, whether or not you want to do anything is up to you. If your account is currently on a non-LTE unlimited plan, then you will automatically get 3GB of un-throttled usage starting at your next billing cycle. If you think that's enough for you, then you don't have to do anything. If you want more, you can give yourself 5GB instead of 3 by doing what I described in the OP.
The LTE plans simply provision you access to the LTE APN (pta), which works on both HSPA+ and LTE. I mean, it has to, because if you had an LTE phone and were going through an area without LTE coverage, it would fall back to HSPA+ for service instead. Since the international Note doesn't have an LTE radio in it, it's just going to use HSPA+.
I suppose the added bonus is that when unlocked LTE phones do eventually come around, especially ones compatible with US frequency blocks, you won't have to make any changes to your account then.

This is a data-only plan correct? I'm not sure how AT&T's new policies affect those kinds of plans. I suppose, theoretically, the same process could work by using the IMEI of an LTE AT&T tablet. I don't know for sure though. You could always pioneer this for us and report back!

This is a similar process as to what people had to do with their imported Galaxy S2's in order to get HSPA+ to work properly. Basically, we had to get the IMEI of one of AT&T's HSPA+ devices (like the Infuse 4G) and use that to provision our accounts properly. The manual input of the IMEI is only temporary anyway; the system automatically re-updates with your unlocked device's IMEI once you reboot, so there's really no spoofing going on here. It's more of an administrative thing than anything else. If I called in to customer support right now and politely asked to have my account provisioning modified or changed to a slightly different plan, the rep would ask me for my IMEI, I would give it to them, and they would see that it is unlocked, not classified in AT&T's database, and I would be told "Sorry, we don't officially support this device, there's nothing we can do..." And that's true, because their system shows available account features based on the classification of device, and for unlocked devices, they're unclassified.
As for defrauding AT&T for an additional 2GB of un-throttled data, I'm not defrauding them any more than they are defrauding me out of the unlimited, unrestricted, non-throttled service that I signed up for originally. Nor am I defrauding them any more by using an unlocked tablet device as a phone as well (the 7.7 is my daily driver), thus saving myself from either having to pay for an additional data line, or getting rid of my unlimited data and purchasing an additional tethering option.
I am not going to be a passive consumer. I am not afraid to stand up to big corporations and be aggressively thrifty with them, especially when they are aggressively greedy with us. If you don't fight back, they're just going to keep gouging you for everything you have until you eventually reach a point where enough is enough. I already reached that point long ago, and more and more people are getting there now. Corporations are always pushing the consumer's spending boundaries, until they cry "uncle." All I'm doing here is encouraging people to fight back, and cry uncle even sooner and more aggressively. I mean, that iPhone guy in California did it and won! Thanks to him (possibly), we're now no longer going to be throttled into oblivion at least until we reach more reasonable thresholds.
Moral of this story:
Corporations are greedy and amoral, and will bend whatever rules they can get away with to get more money out of you. They have no honour. They don't care about you. They care about the bottom line. They care about making money off of you. They don't care if they have to do morally or ethically questionable things to get more money out of you, as long as they can get away with it.
So stop defending them. Stand up for yourself and your fellow consumers. Band together and fight back!

Nexus One WITHOUT data plan on Tmobile?

Hi to all the Tmobile users out there. Anyone have the nexus one on Tmobile network WITHOUT data plan? As far as I know all you have to do is buy the unlock nexus one and pop in a sim card right? (does Tmobile have the same system as ATT that automatically force you into a data plan?)

AFAIK, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you can pop a SIM-card with an "data-less" associated T-Mobile account and the phone will work. Data won't, and I don't believe T-Mobile will force you to buy a data plan.
Cheers,
Kermee
Never mind.. Not thinking correctly.
If you buy the phone unlocked, there's nothing to activate. You just pop in your sim and go.
I bought the unlocked Att nexus, and i'm using my old data plan without a problem (so far). I haven't been contacted or forced into a more expensive data plan or anything like that, though I guess your experience may vary.

I forgot on the n1 that you can skip the google account setup process.. Lol..
I pop my sim card the first time and try syncing it on a SIM WITHOUT data plan, it connected to 3G and edge to retrieve email and stuffs then I disconnected the Edge and 3G right after. They didn't charge me for the amount of data usage because it was under 600KB. Hope this help
Thank you guys, yeah I wanted ATT, but after sporadic report that they force some Nexus users to have data plan, I now have to consider Tmobile, hopefully they don't suck too much in DC area

Thats ridiculous, how does that even make sense? There is NO way a company can force you into a new data plan because you bought a phone on your own terms.

You may feel it's not right, but they do it. Many people trying to use t-mobile nexus ones on at&t got hit with the automatic data plan addition. It looks like most people with at&t ones are getting away without it so far, oddly enough, but that may change at some point in the future.

It will change when Google releases the IMEI's for those handsets.
T-Mobile doesn't force a data plan on a customer supplied handset. Only when you buy it under a new 2 year agreement.. that's what AT&T, Sprint and Verizon does.
Yup. They'll even send you a text to warn you!
Not for everybody but since I live in CA there's no way I would ever change from T-Mo. Great coverage with good options on pricing.
Option A) T-Mo --- $40/mo data only plan I can make VOIP calls with
Option B) Verizon/ATT's --- $70/mo ripoff with cell phone minutes I dont even use?
I'd much rather take option a and save $720 a month over a 24 month period thank you very much.
Verizon and ATT might be the only option for some people coverage wise but that doesnt change the fact that they are terrible companies that force their customers to buy extra plan packages they dont want just so they can steal an extra $30 a month from people instead of giving them options on what they want and dont want.
Give me choices and I'm a happy customer.

With AT&T I think you can get the data plan only (no minutes) for $5 extra on top of the data plan price. So $35/mo for unlimited data, no voice service. That's what I've been told, but you may wanna check for yourself.

[Q] SIM only no contract carrier that supports the G2?

I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):
I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

is your mms on simple mobile fully functional?
Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.
I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

I've decided!
Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

[Q] Question about AT&T data plans.

So I'm on a 3g android smartphone with AT&T right now and if i got a 4g off contract would i have to pay for the 4g service which is really expensive or could i just stay on my good Ole 3g service i am currently using?
I think you can keep your current plan, but don't hold me to that. It may have changed since I've asked about it.
Source
This is the latest thing I've found regarding you question. I asked a little while after that. xD
Since when did they start offering a 4g plan?
I know with my AT&T Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a that when I unbranded and updated to 2.1, my mobile data automatically increased from 3G to "H" or HSPA which is like 3.5G without any rate changes.
I am guessing with AT&T that 4G will be more money, so I am happy with HSPA at 3G rates. Especially since the competition is limiting the speeds of their unlimited data plans.
i thnk the 4g prices will be the same as 3g then 3g prices will drop down.
But will using "4G" route you through a different WAP? If not and it's all a matter of wording and phrasing, I say root/rom and use unlimited data as if you were on a non-smartphone. They don't have to know, you don't have to throw your $ away.

The fact is that with AT&T data is measured in MB or GB, not speed or time. Regardless of how fast or slow you download or use data, it is metered.
However, I do agree that it could be as easy as changing your settings to access 4G, but it won't save you any money.
AT&T's "4G" technology is technically 3G according to the standards committee that oversees these technologies. However, when AT&T starts deploying real 4G, LTE, the prices have a good chance of changing. For now, "4G" plans cost the same as any other.

Exactly, it is based on volume of data used, not on speed of use.

Verizon also limits data speeds on unlimited plans. Either way you are going to pay for data in time or money.
I have a very similar question. Hopefully someone can shed some light.
HERES WHAT I HAVE RIGHT NOW:
I am currently using a Rogers HTC Dream, unlocked rooted and running Gingeryoshi on AT&T. On my line, "Line A," I have the $10 unlimited dumbphone data plan and AT&T thinks I have a Samsung A737 (ancient slider phone). When I bought the phone on ebay, I just put in the APN settings and off I went.
Thanks to a contract renewal discount on "Line B" on my account, whose user does not need a new phone, I recently purchased an HTC Inspire 4G.
HERE IS THE QUESTION:
When I receive the phone, AT&T told me that I can use it on Line A, even though it was purchased through Line B. However, they said I need to call in to activate it. They said that until I do the upgrade will be listed as "incomplete" on their end. Further, they said that I will have to bump up to at least the $15 200MB data plan.
I told them I just want to sell the phone and not use it. They told me I still have to call and activate it, but that I can then "remove" it from the account and "reactivate" my dumbphone, at which point I will be reverted to the $10 a month dumbphone plan.
The $1,000,000 question: when I receive the new AT&T branded HTC Inspire, can I just pop my existing sim that I'm using in my Rogers Dream into the Inspire, and use it without calling to activate?
**to be clear, I'm not talking about bypassing the Android activation screen. Seeing as how there was no "activation" process for my Rogers Dream, I'm unfamiliar with the process as to AT&T branded phones. So, I guess the questions is if it is any different. I am comfortable rooting and roming, so if either of those processes will get me an Inspire working with my $10 data plan I'm ready to pull the trigger.
ALSO: THANK YOU XDA FORUMS. I think this is my first real post here, but I have browsed the forums for hours and you all helped me along from tethering my A737 to rooting my first T-Mobile G1, to installing roms and the DangerSPL on my Rogers Dream, so hopefully you can help me with this!

Ok, I work for AT&T and saw this thread and thought maybe I'd help clear some of this stuff up.
First, the 3G and the 4G plans are pretty much the same thing. You should be good using a 4g phone off contract. they are labeled different in my system at AT&T but I believe them to be the same plan because AT&T does not have a full 4G plan yet. But to be safe you can switch because the 4G plan smartphone plan costs the same as the 3G smartphone plan.
Unless you are saying you have a 3G "QMD" (Quick Messaging Device), or in lamest terms, a Non-Smartphone or "DumbPhone" haha. And that leads me to my next point. Pay attention here haha. As far as I've seen, if you have an ATT phone, the system will automatically detect if you've switched phones. Like if you went from a QMD to a ATT Smartphone, the system will auto-detect that you have a smartphone and will switch your data plan and notify you of it.
BUT, from what I've seen a few times, if you get a NON ATT Smartphone, the system doesnt seem to recognize you have a smartphone because it doesnt recognize the IMEI as a smartphone but instead as a Third-Party Device. Therefore it doesnt change your plan.
Now this does not happen to ALL non-ATT smarphones. Like my buddy who went from a QMD to an unlocked Tmo HD2 on his ATT plan. the system some how recognized his phone as a smartphone and switched him. He might have one of the phones that ATT has been able to recognize I guess.
As for getting the Inspire 4G and not activating it but using it on your other line, I would have to say that is a bad idea. If you dont activate it then after 30 days that additional line is cancelled and removed off your acct and ATT will then request the phone back. and if you dont return it, then ATT will charge the price of the phone to your acct. So no, dont do that.
As far as I know, the best way to go about getting a smartphone and not be forced to change your plan from the $10 QMD unlimited data plan to the smartphone plans is to get a non-ATT smartphone and hope they cannot recognize it as a smartphone.
My guess would be if you use 2 gb of data on that though, ATT might start asking questions as to why you are using 2gb of data on a non-smartphone though, haha. so be careful.
wrote a book but atleast I cleared some stuff up for you guys
thanks for the input chris-
you got at something that i had been wondering, mainly, whats the difference (in terms of detecting whether i have a smart phone) between my G1 or my Dream and the Inspire I just ordered. Is it that AT&T has the IMEI? I thought carriers could detect the IMEI of my Dream and discover that it was a smartphone, but they haven't...
As for the data, what's funny is that I've been using the Dream on that line with the $10 plan for 2 years, averaging 1 to 3 GB of data a month. I even had the rep pull up my account and, in the same conversation, verify that I had an A737 dumbphone (its just easier to say) and that I was using over 2GB of data. =) hahah
so, I guess I will need to activate the phone, tell them im selling it and using a razr, give them the razr imei (i have an old one) then switch the sim to the inspire and hope they dont catch it.
i wonder if anyone has tried this (maybe using an AT&T phone that they purchased on craigslist or ebay on AT&T) and how it went for them.
I guess this is sort of the even cheaper form of the UNLIM DATA 4 EVERYONE iPhone 2G trick!
PS chris I lold when you said you worked for AT&T but your info shows you're a Tmo customer. =) Maybe soon they'll be one in the same...

Glad I could help
But again I would strongly advise not actually using the Inspire because even if you give them the imei of a Moto Razr, if you put that sim in the Inspire, since it's an AT&T phone, They will probably recognize it automatically and sign you up on the smartphone data plan. The only way that I know of to get around it is to use a NON-ATT smartphone, therefore they dont know what the phone is.
Know what I mean?
and as for this..

Yea, I love being a customer with Tmo. And I swear I'll be so mad if this merger goes thru
thanks again chris!
everyone's responses are always appreciated. thought i'd give you all a quick update:
today my inspire arrived. I called the automated activation line, entered some billing info, and accepted the terms and conditions. i did not use the new sim card sent to me at any point.
i called ATT&T just to be safe and confirm, which they did, that i had completed activation properly. my line wouldnt be canceled because i didnt put the new sim in the new phone, and i would not be charged the retail price of the inspire even though it was not registered on the line i used to order it. i told them simply that i wanted to sell the inspire, and they assured me it would work without further AT&T involvement if i put in a compatible sim card. seems like they are most concerned about 1) getting you to accept the contract in exchange for the phone and 2) getting you on a **&%*[email protected] data plan if they catch wind of you using a smartphone.
they also confirmed that NO data charges had been added to the line i used to order the upgrade, and that the 2 year contract was in effect. score.
inspire is charging, ill let you all know how it goes when i turn it on and put in my OLD AT&T sim (on the line with the $10 dumbphone plan). According to chris im rolling the dice here, so OPTIMALLY it will turn on, connect to sweet sweet 4G data, and AT&T will keep thinking I have a dumbphone. if so, chalk one up for shiftiness.
yes is it man
I have an unlocked Tmo HD2 on AT&T rooted to NexusHD Gingerbread. They think I'm still using a dumb phone. My data rate did not change.

I second that notion above me!
I'm thinking about switching to the Nexus One that works with the ATT 850 and 1900 bands but, after reading all these stories of people getting switched over to the $30 smartphone data plan I'm contemplating whether I should or not. It seems as though ATT is starting to recognizing and crackdown on more and more non-att smartphone imeis and switching them to the "appropriate" smartphone data plan.
Is there a list of phones that are still unrecognized by ATTs database?

Att shut off my data; argh.

Yep, I everything right and they got me anyway.
-- on a go phone pre pay plan, unlimited talk, text, data...50/month
-- registered the Sim in my Nokia e72, then transferred to my sgn.
-- worked fine for a couple weeks now and then bam, shut down. I called to complain and the rep said they detected a smartphone imei. I swapped backto the Nokia and he said he reset the tower but still no data on my sgn.
Anyone know how to spoof an imei?
Argh,
Jason

I assume you are keeping up on the big Q&A thread, but to summarize since you've opened up a new thread:
AT&T appears to be cracking down on the unlimited data plans.
People from the medianet, gophone, and even some people on unlimited iphone plans are getting ther data shut off. The reason for the data shut off is that for some stupid reason AT&T lists the GNote as a Tablet, not a phone. That disqualifies it for any voice+data plans since AT&T sucks.
It does not appear, however, that AT&T is cracking down on anyone with a capped (200MB/2G/4G) plan. So one option is to get a 2g/4g smartphone plan with a different smartphone, then use that sim in the note.
No, you don't get cheap unlimited data (or unlimited data period), but at least you get data. Once you get the SMS there aren't that many options. (Well, I don't consider IMEI hacking a valid option).
Some people are nuking their /efs folders to return a generic IMEI number. It's not confirmed how long that trick works.

Although I hate to say it, I can see AT&T's logic here. Everyone always got upset over the fact that they would charge more for (unlimited) data on a smartphone vs. a dumbphone. The only argument for that was that a typical smartphone user will likely use more data than a typical dumbphone user. You could carry the same logic to tablets. But if the data is metered, the device becomes moot. 2GB is 2GB, regardless of what is using it.
As ChodTheWocko says, there's a big thread on this over in the Q&A forum, and another thread in this forum. Check them out. Basically, they've been focusing on people on unlimited plans so far, and it appears switching to a tiered plan will get you out of trouble for now.
The other option is changing your IMEI. Galaxy Tab users have been doing this most of this year by deleting their /efs folder, which contains the IMEI, and the device reports a generic GSM phone IMEI after that. Somehow, despite many people using the same generic IMEI, everything seems to still be working since a few months ago. Replacing your /efs folder with that from another samsung device seems to give you the unique IMEI of the device the /efs folder came from.
So once again it seems like the best routes are:
Legit: Switch to a non-unlimited plan. This seems to make you OK (for now, at least)
Not as legit: Delete your /efs folder so your device returns a generic IMEI number. This has been working , but for how long?
Even less legit: replace your /efs folder with that from a different Samsung device. This should give you the unique IMEI of the donor device, and afford you the corresponding plan options.
Disclaimer, I haven't tried any /efs modifications, myself, as I haven't received the dreaded text yet. I'm only regurgitating what I've read. I won't be responsible for any issues you may encounter with /efs modifications.
Everything would be just fine if you all simply had 4g sim cards on a legit data plan. I was issued a 4g sim card when I got my infuse way back when that was released and did almost 5gb of data last month and half way thru this month and already over 2gigs, and not one word text or email. The last post I just read in that other mention having to swap to a 4g sim card and problem solved..... shesh

Don't confuse false advertising with marketing ...lol....
Apparently the IMEI range used by the Note is similar enough to that used by the Galaxy Tab that AT&T's systems are erroneously assuming our Notes at actually Galaxy Tabs. At least, that's their story.
And because they are a$$holes and require more expensive data packages if you are using a "tablet", they shut off our data thinking that we will call them up and meekly pay them more money to get it turned back on.
It took me a full hour on the phone with an idiot this morning to clear this up - jezus, the Note has been out for over a month, you'd think they would have this figured out by now??
The first clueless CSR actually told me flat out (eventually, after 45 minutes of "research") that there was nothing I could do, and "nobody there who could help me." So I told her she had better find someone who COULD help me Pronto, or I would take my four lines and $230/month of business straight over to StraightTalk or Verizon. She got her floor manager on the line fast. And it turns out HE could help me after all So the moral of that story is, demand to talk to the floor manager, and threaten to take your account elsewhere if you have to.
Any more bullsh!t like this from them and I will gladly pay the ETFs and take my lucrative business elsewhere. They have crappy 3g service around here anyway (max 300kbps) - I'd be happy to switch to Verizon 4g, where I'm getting 3-8Mbps down on my new LTE MiFi.

So far, here is what is working for me with the same issue:
Make sure you are actually on a 4g plan, even if they say you are, keep asking to double check. I had 3 people tell me I was on the appropriate 4g plan and the 4th person said I was still on 3g unlimited.
Make sure you have a 4g sim card.
Go to an AT&T store and have them call and verify that it is indeed a phone, not a tablet.
Those were the three changes that had to take place before they stopped giving me a hard time with repeated txts and emails.
I have another thread in the general section of the Note forum outlining all my issues as they progressed.

Thanks for the info. I will try this out today.
I spent over an hour on the phone this morning because my data was shut off. After they told me all they could give me was the $39.99 data connect plan for my "dell latitude" or "galaxy tablet," I rebooted my phone and the data came back.
I currently have $30 unlimited smartphone plan grandfathered in. I've also been seeing very mediocre speeds on my SGN (3.5Mbps/1Mbps).
UPDATE: Called at&t once again and was told that I couldn't get the 4G unlimited plan unless I use a different device. It seems like every rep I talk to is giving me a different story. Thanks at&t!
For reference (check your online bill):
3G unlimited: GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DPPB
4G unlimited: GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB

The most obvious one, what is the true data limit to the "unlimited" data. How do they determine if you're using too much data, or how do they determine if you're streaming or tethering?
Sent from my GT-N7000 Samsung Galaxy Note "Go big or go home" using XDA app
it actually depends upon the network of the area,
we have tools to check how much bandwidth is allocated in the area
if we detect serious network impact then we know what phone number caused such,
we dont own a network we "rent" from other large telecom companies
but mostly its 2GB - 3GB before it was 5GB but due to complaints recieved by TMO/AT&T/Sprint/Verizon about our subscribers affecting the performance of their network we reduced it to 2GB - 3GB,
some though get away with having as much as 8-10GB per month, im not sure how that happens
and analyze thier marketing strategy its unlimited "web browsing" they never said downloading, tethering, streaming, internet just "web browsing"
one funny experience was when a customer said, "whats the use of having one of your android phones if im prohibited to download stuff from internet with my 'unlimited' plan"

about 2GB - 3GB actually,
depends also on the bandwidth you are allocating

Hi, I just signed up because this is the same question I 've been searching for.
I'm now looking for a prepaid to save money since I'm just a student so cannot afford to try both straight talk and gophone. which one between these two has the fastest download speed? I have a 4G capable phone and just signed up for att's gophone service today with 1GB data, but the speed I'm getting is 1.7 to 2mb/s at best. would straight talk be faster than this speed?
I just heard the gophone offers throttle 3G, so it's around 2 or 2.5G, whereas straight talk does not throttle, so they are around 3.5G, is that true?
the only reason why I chose to try gophone because straight talk's 45 dollar plan doesn't allow international sms. but I can think of an alternative if straight talk is faster.
Thanks in advance!
ST now actually has a unlimited international voice/sms + local unlimited web browsing for $60, and ST runs on AT&T HSPA+ network so you can have as much as 1-1.7Mbps (at least thats what we know but some can get 4g speeds)
iPhone 4S on Straight Talk
I am very curious about using an Iphone 4S on Straight Talk. Hubby's contract with AT&T is up next month and I really want to get all the iTards off my plan So, what am I going to have to do to his phone to get as many (hopefully all) of the features he currently uses to function?
#1 requirement is tethering. He tethers (& yes, I pay AT&T their F***ing extortion fee) so he can telecommute--no downloading--just connecting to his work pc.
#2 requirement is the "Find my Friends" feature so he can keep track of all his iTard buddies & kids. Why anyone would want this, ahem, feature is beyond me.
#3 is there going to be any problem with iTunes or the Ap Store? He and the iTard kids will throw the biggest hissy fit ever seen if they can't get to the latest American Idol downloads & Tap Tap Revenge.
Thank you!
How can I keep my number when switching from AT&T to Straight Talk using my own phone? The only number transfer option they offer requires I purchase a Straight Talk branded device.
Thanks for answering my earlier question.
Since the amount of data you can use seems to vary from location to location, is there any way to check exactly how much one can use - *before* getting warned?

1.) if you are on our BYOP plan, you can tether all the hell you want, as long as we don't detect major bandwidth allocation affecting the carrier
2.) any feature that uses the internet inside your phone is compatible, you don't need to unlock your phone since you will have a AT&T sim under StraightTalk

LOL, who told you that?, you can keep a AT&T number and still use the same device, we just give you a SIM (we need to program the SIM to your number and re-register it in the AT&T network), call ST and tell them to activate the SIM, the process takes 24hrs-2 business days, or maybe they have a new policy about phone number change, it was 2 months since i worked there, but that was the process before i left
