So...who else is getting a Padfone? - Eee Pad Transformer General

THERE IS A PADPHONE FORUM ALREADY •• THREAD CLOSED
I am likely going to be saying bye-bye to my beloved HTC Glacier this April when the Padfone comes out, especially since it's pretty much confirmed that the Padfone works with the TF101 dock I already own.
Skip to 50 seconds in for the great news:
Don't worry, my TF101 isn't going anywhere.
EDIT: Oh, and in case anyone notices, the capacitive buttons on that prototype piece from the video doesn't exist in the production version they showed at the MWC (it's not even the same form factor):

I really fancy it too but I will have to see what the prices is and how it works with a phone contract

Ugh..is this the next cornerstone/ICS topic to invade our forum? This one is barely relevant..i can just see it now, this is the next noobgasm topic to clog the forum...there was already one post on it...btw

Meh. I am not even that excited about it.
The illusion is that you get three portable devices with one, but the reality is that you only have one device that can fully function on its own--the Padfone itself.

So the tablet doesn't even function unless the phone is docked inside it. No thanks. Honestly, I would rather have a good phone and a good tablet.
There will be other new tablets coming out. Way too early to make any kind of decision.

You're in a Transformer forum. That's like complaining that the keyboard dock doesn't function without the tablet. The "tablet" ACCESSORY of the Padfone, is just that: an accessory. Meaning, if you don't want to, you don't have to buy it. To me, it's just another (highly functional) dock. And this is coming from someone that DOES own a good phone and two good tablets.
And I HIGHLY doubt that the tablet accessory will be anywhere near the price of an actual tablet. If they don't go too crazy on pricing, it'd be nice to essentially have half your 3G/4G enabled tablet subsidized. That is, if ASUS hooks up with a proper carrier.

Eh? Even though luna_c666 and I have been disagreeable, I have to defend him here. The fact he joined only 3 months ago actually makes him look good because of his post count and the amount of thanks received. His contribution to the community is far greater than yours.
Not sure why you are calling him angry. His post didn't show any anger. Just his personal opinion on the matter. From my point of view, it looks like you are angry over his indifference to padfone.
Not sure why you are flaming me either. You mad because I am not chanting praises for padfone? I am entitled to my personal opinion and I wasn't attacking anyone while doing so.
I would go on and rip you a new one but I really don't want another infraction so i will end it here.

See, for me, that's a plus. I have a phone and a tablet. What I want is a unified device. I currently have one set of apps on my Nexus S, and another set on my Transformer.
Padfone will give me One Device to Rule Them All (as it were).
Can't wait.
Look at it this way - how often have you been using your tablet and your phone at the same time? I'm guessing not very often.
Also, you'll have a single call and data plan, because it's still only one device. I don't know whether American networks will defecate masonry over such an idea, but over here, I think it'll be fantastic.

Heh. That's a good analogy, actually. It's not a separate tablet, it's just a phone, that you can make REALLY BIG when you need to. Combine it wtih the keyboard dock, it's also an Android netbook. Even better. 3-for-the-price-of-one. And if I can keep my TF101 dock? Money saved

I already found buyers for my Transformer and iPhone 4S. Padfone is going to be my first "compromise free" device since HTC Universal. I can't wait to have it at home.

Nah, feels gimmicky considering I have a tablet and a phone already that don't depend on each other.

This is how I feel. It will seriously consider if it they get it to the US and its on my carrier when the upgrade comes around and the pricing for the "tablet" is fair. It should be cheap since it doesn't have any processing power, its just a touchscreen with a battery.
I love my OG transformer but it is true that I have to sync functionality across the devices at times. The idea that I could have my phone plugged into a large screen and a keyboard and simultaneously charging while I am working on a plane only to get off the plane, have the completed PowerPoint still on the phone and the phone 100% charged seems like a great idea.
Its time has finally come now that Android supports both interfaces in the same OS. Motorola's implementation was crap, with their terrible web-top skin.

That is the other thing I was considering too. Now you either have to pay a separate plan or hack your phone and wirelessly tether, killing its battery. ASUS said the tablet has an antenna in it that hooks to the phone to boost reception too, so using the bluetooth if you were in a cave docking the phone might even make its phone performance better.

Actually, the only way I'm getting this (unlike the Verizon Xoom) is that Asus doesn't hook up with a carrier.
I like to buy my gadgets without a monthly bill thank you. And I already have cellphone services.

Just so I am clear, WTF does this have to do with Google exactly??? The article you supplied references Motorola, and has little to nothing to do with Google.
I'm guessing because Xoom is a Google experience device? Maybe? Didn't read the article but I just ordered my wifi only Xoom...

There is no way motorola keeps producing the xoom much longer. It is not a very good tablet, and with tablets like the galaxy tab coming out for half the price, no one will buy it. Also apple just plain embarrassed motorola by including better hardware in a cheaper package in the ipad2. Also, the tegra 2 is a year old chip and is embarrassingly slow compared to the competition. And its not capable of playing high profile h.264, which the original ipad can do.

There is an iPad selling for $499. Most people buy that version. There is only one choice with the Xoom, and its HUNDREDS of dollars more, with a poorer quality display, terrible speaker/power button placement and an SoC that is multiple times less capable.

I am upset. I have been waiting about 9 months now for an Android tablet to be worthy of buying, and Motorola completely messed up what was supposed to be the first worthy Android tablet.
I doubt such an obscure site could do any serious damage to Google's reputation.
I think the only thing that was poorly executed was the delay in a wifi model.
32 gigs is just about right on the money for storage this day in age. I wouldn't have been satisfied with a 16 gig, as soon as I hit that mark, I would be pissed - but I am reasonable enough to say that if I fill up 32 gigs I probably need to clean house.
I think it feels great in the hand, where the iPad feels slick/greasy and easier to drop. We are still waiting on a ton of Tegra optimization to pick stuff up, some say the recent update was a huge performance boost (25% higher quadrants).
Honestly, where Android is right now in the tablet market - I don't think the things you bear issue with will matter in the next year or so.
I do kind of have an issue with the charger...it feels a little on the weak side, and doesn't seem to have the best build quality...but I can deal since everything else seems to be right up my ally.

Here are my issues:
*Priced WAY too high.
*Tegra 2 INCAPABLE at a hardware level of playing videos that our Epic's can crank out.
*Pretty mediocre screen compared to the iPad, iPad2, Nook Color, Galaxy Tab 7"
*Terrible placement of speakers (sound projected away from you)
*Terrible placement of power button
*Waste of money to include an 8mp camera
*Tegra 2 GPU not even in same league as PowerVr SGX543mp2
First of all BGR got the news from Digitimes...second of all as stated its more motorola then google..and third of all...you can't just sue the press like that...caue there is a thing called "Freedom of press"..

Nexus T?

http://androidheadlines.com/2011/05/rumor-10-inch-toshiba-tab-is-nexus-t-and-google-io-swag.html
what do you guys think? will this be the nexus tablet? i sure hope it is.. as i am still waiting a announcement from google i/o before jumping into XOOM...
i should had have my xoom weeks ago, but my supplier delayed me.. and now google io is just a week away, i sure hope they announce that this is the nexus tablet.
and i quite like the specs. (don't mind it being heavier and thicker).
it has HDMI port (i belive is full size, not mini), USB port, mini USB port and a dock port as well.
the only thing missing is a micro SD card? but if the USB and mini USB works, we can just plug in any card reader.
But it is ugly. As you said, thicker and heavier. I hate that silver thingie.
Oh my, i hope this is not google nexus tablet.
Website says it does have an SD slot.
I am curious what the retail price on it is. if it is above or below Xoom mainly.
i hope it isn't a Nexus Tablet. I mean the specs are pretty dam close to the Xoom. Its like the Nexus S all over again. anyone who has a tablet already has no reason to buy it. Now if it had a Tegra 3 in it and not a 2 then yes it would be something to buy. I mean the USB port is nice and all but really the Xoom has a SDcard slot kinda the same to me.
how about the battery life.
it suppose to be 3x better than normal lithium battery plus its interchangeable..
my concern is always about updates coming stright from google.
at the moment, xoom's update comes from motorola, not from google directly.
hence at the moment, i am holding off xoom untill after google IO....
Pretty positive that at I/O there will be welcome packages of either the Nexus S 4G and the usual T-Shirt. At the keynote, I think they'll announce that everyone's getting either the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Xoom.
All I know is that it is what I am getting, I just purchased the Xoom to hold me over until it was released, my return date for the Xoom is in June when this is to be released. I hate motorola products but wanted something to see what Honeycomb was like and since this was the only one worth getting at the time well the only one that was around.
Acer and Asus are worse than Motorola, have owned laptops from both and quickly disposed of them!!! I have three Toshiba computers and like them very much, plus the back of that tab can be replaced with different color backs just like a silicone case and that is the ONLY tablet with a removable battery!!!
This is the link to the tab's web site. http://thetoshibatablet.com/
hmm good point made in the comments over there ... both front and back cameras are in portrait mode... Honeycomb is made for landscape mode use...this looks like a potential 2.2/2.3 tablet... hardly a Nexus.
Doubt it's the nexus tablet.
Evo Better Than The Best...
i guess we just have to sit tight till google IO to find out. which ever it is, as long as google is going to provide the update, i am getting that.

Yea this is a really big indicator. Honeycomb's UI is almost exclusively made for widescreen landscape use, not portrait. Not sure why they'd have the cameras set up for portrait use.
No, it is a Honeycomb tablet.

The xoom although receive updates from Motorola but it has no custom skins or anything anywhere whatsoever. So, xoom or nexus tablet are both good choices. Plus, the xoom were given away at either CES or mwc by google. That proves the xoom is already one of the few chosen kids.

weird camera placement for a honeycomb tab then. very weird.
love the XOOM cameras ... they're both very very good.
I'd guess it is simply being called 'Toshiba Tablet' judging on the URL etc.
and why not?
Also with the Xoom being out and about - I can't imagine Google needs a Nexus X device for a tablet? wait till 3.1/4.0 for another Nexus device?

Life feels better after the Iconia! My 2 cents.. :)

Hello!
I've had the Iconia for about three weeks now and have to say I'm very satisfied with the device. I went to the U.S. on late April for a business trip and decided to invest my hard earned money on a new tablet. I was able to side test the Iconia, Xoom, iPad 2 and was sold by the Acer for the following reasons:
- Full sized USB and microSD right out of the box;
- Speaker quality;
- Rotation lock switch;
- Battery life;
- Feels AWESOME in hands (very important factor to me. We all know the Iconia is heavier than the iPad, Galaxy, Transformer.. but those extra 100g are well distributed on its fantastic design);
- Fantastic design
Both Iconia and Xoom share very similar hardware specs, but the A500 user experience felt a lot smoother. Dunno if it's Android related, but I actually had to hard reset the Xoom in store. That was very disappointing.
I own an iPhone 4 since its launch, so I'm very used and kinda tired of iOS. It feels outdated. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, it's a phenomenal piece of hardware, specially after jailbreaking, but I felt it was time to go for a more flexible solution for my tablet experience.
I never saw the Iconia as an expensive toy. Sure I can watch movies and Youtube videos with my girlfriend in bed or have many laughs with friends while messing with the "Nipple" app.. but I no longer feel enslaved to a chair and table when I need to browse the web, read emails, chat, online shopping, read, read, read, etc NO MATTER where I am. Yes, I have a laptop, but it's simply not the same thing. A funny example, the other day I was editing an important document on the laptop, when all the sudden I felt the urge to go to the bathroom.. it took me less than 10 seconds to save the document to a thumbdrive, go to the bathroom and resume my editing on Quickoffice. Comfy and priceless!
I also play drums and have been using the A500 quite a lot for sheet music reading, learning new songs, etc. Last week I was jamming with a couple of friends as we needed some lyrics.. I just handed the Iconia to the "singer" (we were kinda drunk, lol) and he had all lyrics opened in different browser tabs in a matter of seconds, ready to rock. Again, priceless! Here's the result (just for giggles):
I have only 2 minor issues that hopefully Acer will fix on the upcoming update:
- GPS not properly working (or not working at all, while the iPhone locks to the satellites almost instantly);
- Random wake/sleep bug.
At the end of the day, I think it's a matter of life quality and 450 bucks sounds like a very small investment for what I've gained so far using the Iconia. Definitely a keeper for its price and specs. Thumbs up, Acer!
I like mine a lot, I hope Acer fix GPS, in my X10 gps lock almost instantly without wifi or 3g, I miss that feature.
Love it, great stuff, it certainly does change how you access the net, read, music etc.
I love the music player and browser, also got the american google book app which looks fantastic and is real smooth, but cant add your own books so not much use...
I have been into computers for a long long time, and I can safely say that tablets are the first real game changer, even more so than laptops...
We are all blessed to have one of these devices (or any new tablet) to be able to enjoy and use in our lives.
Enjoy
I aslo agree, I love this new form of computing. I have a big, loud, and sometimes room warming gaming desktop. It feels great to not sanction myself off in the corner of the room to pay bills, reply to emails, and do basic things. All while not staring down my on my phones screen.
im buying it for sure!
thanks for the nice info.....
yeah I feel the same I use my Acer iconia A500 all day so far I'm very satisfied but just feel like we need more developer support like the Asus and xoom if you look at their forums they already have custom themes I want that but even if we don't get it oh well I still love my tablet the same
I enjoy the hell out of mine. I didn't buy it to be a supercomputer, if I wanted an Ipad2 I would have bought one. Plain and simple, the Iconia does what I bought it for, web browsing, music, video and a few games now and then. It came down to a choice between a new laptop or a tablet. I wanted the portability of the tablet and didn't want another device tethered to Itunes. I'm glad I bought mine and I also understand this tablet is still very early in its development and should mature well over time. Did I expect absolute perfection from day one, nope, but I'm glad I got what I did and I'm going to stick with it.
Love mine for many reasons, but this is #1

This is how I feel as well. You know they get it right when you can't see yourself without a certain piece of tech.
Can you live without a cell phone? Sure! Would you if you didn't have to? Doubtful.
This is the sentiment I hold for my A500. I will be the first to admit that it's not necessary. But boy is life better/more convenient, etc. with it around.
I won't complain about the price, though I suspect Acer could have done a little better than $450. Still, we are paying a premium as somewhat, first adopters. Eventually I'm sure parts will become cheaper, as well as assembly and somewhere down the line the price will be more in line with what I consider to be perfect (aka $400 or less).
Your reasons were exactly why I went with the Acer over the Xoom although Im pretty sure they will get things sorted out. I hope both are a success as I really want to see some app development on the commercial side (games etc).

The Prime is a train wreck. Check their forum. The Samsung OEM BT keyboard is amazing and serves the same function as the one in the Asus products. The difference being it doesn't add extra battery life. It does however double as a case and can be used keyboard down as a stand. Here's some pics of mine (disregard the Vaio). Keep in mind, no Android device can replace a laptop if you do anything but light work and don't collaborate. Faux-Office can't compete with "real" Office.

It's the official Samsung keyboard. It's not cheap.
http://www.google.com/products/cata...=X&ei=zPEhT479FuKXiALr95T7Bw&ved=0CH4Q8gIwBg#
And it doesnt gives us any USB port.. =(
Which means you might need/want a Bluetooth mice as well...
= The Transformer Prime's keyboard dock adds to battery life...
= The GTab101's one cuts it down.

But...
= The G-Tab works consistently, has great wireless, and isn't held together with chewing gum and bailing wire.
= The G-Tab's single battery performs better than the Prime's battery when not expanded via the keyboard.
Seriously, any one considering the Prime spend some time on their home page. It's got serious issues. The TF700 due out in a couple of months that has a different design and plastic border for its antennas is a better choice if you want a hard dock.
Oh, I'm happy with my 3G GTab101;
I'm only talking about docks;
Just don't tell me you wouldnt like Samsung to release/have released something like Asus?
It's aint magic alright; it is just a keyboard dock with a battery and a USB port.
But I sure would like something like this for my GTab. Thats all.
I work for tmobile and we have the 3g/wifi tabs, thats what i got. And they have a keyboard for $80 that has a usb port so thats what ill get. But im considering the sammy keyboard.

Truthfully, I don't get the whole "Android as a laptop replacement" thing. Faux-Office is just that, you can't use things like WebEx and SharePoint, and Ethernet connectivity either doesn't exist or has to be kluged. For light document creation, e-mail, note taking and the like I get it. I use my BT keyboard like 20% of the time. The little Vaio in the picture has a 256GB SSD, runs Windows Ultimate and Office 2010, and has VZW broadband. I'll take that before the G-Tab if I need to stay connected to the office.
As for Asus vs. Samsung keyboards, I like that the Samung reverses to be a stand and acts as a protective case at the same time. It has better key travel and feels more natural too. I have a ZaggSparq that I bring on long plane flights w/o power if I need to extend the Tab's battery.
It's all personal preference and how you everyone individually uses their devices.
Neither am I digging the whole "Android as a laptop replacement" thing; at all!
I dont have any bluetooth device; and am not planning to buy one as long as we dont see a serious.. let's say "standard" gamepad.
(I just cant understand why we dont see any)
As for Asus vs. Samsung keyboards; my point wasnt to say which one is the most comfortable or such;
Take whatever Sammy keyboard you like and just give it an extra battery and a USB port. .. But keep the price around 100$. Not 200$.
I think that it can be a replacement depending on needs. For my needs like multimedia viewing, web browsing, email and short papers but if youre developing stuff or mixing music or other stuff then obviously it isnt a replacment.

S2110

Anyone know of an S2110 review? (Yes, I know it's not a Thinkpad...)
Surprisingly no not a true review
There are some hands on and unboxing videos though
All I need to know is how it stacks up against Asus' TF300T. Assuming they have similar prices, who would you go for? (At this point it looks like I can get one at preferred corporate prices, which means sensibly cheaper than Asus's tablet.)

I received an S2110 only yesterday, and while I haven't owned an Asus TF300T, I've played with them extensively on two occasions.
My take:
I recommend the S2110. While both of these tablets go heavy on the plastic, the Lenovo seems better built to me, and is plenty fast (it's counterintuitive, but I think the APQ8060A in the S2110 feels faster than the Tegra in the EEEPad in real-world use). The keyboards are a wash: both will work well for the occasional content generation. Haven't tested Bluetooth yet, but that's supposed to favor the Lenovo for A/V synch. The only knock I can think of on the S2110 is that a few apps -- notably Flipboard -- don't yet support the tablet, but I think that will change. A discounted price on the Lenovo would pretty much seal the deal for me.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, it looks like I will be receiving mine tomorrow (unless UPS surprises me with an earlier delivery), and unless my wife does not decide to send it back (as we've had some arguments over the opportunity of our purchasing this ). And yes, I did purchase the 32G version including the dock at preferred corporate prices :highfive: The APQ8060A is a Krait-based processor, so it should, indeed, be faster than Tegra3.
Alright, i received mine, and I am completely ecstatic. :highfive: Awesome job Lenovo! Got the 32G version with dock. Minor SW hiccups, but I am hoping to get CM on it soon, or at least Lenovo's JB whenever they get 'round to releasing it.
I just got mine today. Is there a root out for this? I have been looking for about an hour now with no luck.

Front Camera Doesn't Work???
How do you get the front camera to turn on?? The user instructions cite a button in the interface to select between the two (like my RAZR has) but in the actual interface, no selector switch.

Are you talking about the front camera as in the main camera that you would take photos with or are you talking about the front facing camera, the one you would use for video chat?

The S2110 is not really high up on devs' "to do" list unfortunately.

I had a TF700 and an S2110 for comparison, and sent the Tf700 back.
If you, like me, care alot about the keyboard, ignore all of the comparisons out there and buy the lenovo.
They both have strong points and somehow i would have prefered the transformers look and feel, but the keyboard of the lenovo is actually usable, while the asus one has no resistance. It's a toy, not a keyboard. Also i was surprised about the touchpad of the lenovo actually being ok. Not great, but heaps better then you'd expect after testing the transformer.
If you don't care about keyboards all _that_ much, well then there's alot of differences in how they feel subjectively, and i'd recommend just buying both from amazon and sending one of them back.
Now i still have 20 days to send the ideatab back, in case i don't manage to replace lenovos bloatware with real android.
Fastboot works fine so far. anyone got something to test with fastboot boot?

I didn't hear good things about TF700's storage bottleneck etc., so I think I made the right decision to go for the Lenovo.
is there a way to root the S2110, I see the link but not much talk about success.
