Life feels better after the Iconia! My 2 cents.. :) - Acer Iconia A500

Hello!
I've had the Iconia for about three weeks now and have to say I'm very satisfied with the device. I went to the U.S. on late April for a business trip and decided to invest my hard earned money on a new tablet. I was able to side test the Iconia, Xoom, iPad 2 and was sold by the Acer for the following reasons:
- Full sized USB and microSD right out of the box;
- Speaker quality;
- Rotation lock switch;
- Battery life;
- Feels AWESOME in hands (very important factor to me. We all know the Iconia is heavier than the iPad, Galaxy, Transformer.. but those extra 100g are well distributed on its fantastic design);
- Fantastic design
Both Iconia and Xoom share very similar hardware specs, but the A500 user experience felt a lot smoother. Dunno if it's Android related, but I actually had to hard reset the Xoom in store. That was very disappointing.
I own an iPhone 4 since its launch, so I'm very used and kinda tired of iOS. It feels outdated. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, it's a phenomenal piece of hardware, specially after jailbreaking, but I felt it was time to go for a more flexible solution for my tablet experience.
I never saw the Iconia as an expensive toy. Sure I can watch movies and Youtube videos with my girlfriend in bed or have many laughs with friends while messing with the "Nipple" app.. but I no longer feel enslaved to a chair and table when I need to browse the web, read emails, chat, online shopping, read, read, read, etc NO MATTER where I am. Yes, I have a laptop, but it's simply not the same thing. A funny example, the other day I was editing an important document on the laptop, when all the sudden I felt the urge to go to the bathroom.. it took me less than 10 seconds to save the document to a thumbdrive, go to the bathroom and resume my editing on Quickoffice. Comfy and priceless!
I also play drums and have been using the A500 quite a lot for sheet music reading, learning new songs, etc. Last week I was jamming with a couple of friends as we needed some lyrics.. I just handed the Iconia to the "singer" (we were kinda drunk, lol) and he had all lyrics opened in different browser tabs in a matter of seconds, ready to rock. Again, priceless! Here's the result (just for giggles):
I have only 2 minor issues that hopefully Acer will fix on the upcoming update:
- GPS not properly working (or not working at all, while the iPhone locks to the satellites almost instantly);
- Random wake/sleep bug.
At the end of the day, I think it's a matter of life quality and 450 bucks sounds like a very small investment for what I've gained so far using the Iconia. Definitely a keeper for its price and specs. Thumbs up, Acer!

I like mine a lot, I hope Acer fix GPS, in my X10 gps lock almost instantly without wifi or 3g, I miss that feature.

Love it, great stuff, it certainly does change how you access the net, read, music etc.
I love the music player and browser, also got the american google book app which looks fantastic and is real smooth, but cant add your own books so not much use...
I have been into computers for a long long time, and I can safely say that tablets are the first real game changer, even more so than laptops...
We are all blessed to have one of these devices (or any new tablet) to be able to enjoy and use in our lives.
Enjoy

I aslo agree, I love this new form of computing. I have a big, loud, and sometimes room warming gaming desktop. It feels great to not sanction myself off in the corner of the room to pay bills, reply to emails, and do basic things. All while not staring down my on my phones screen.

im buying it for sure!
thanks for the nice info.....

yeah I feel the same I use my Acer iconia A500 all day so far I'm very satisfied but just feel like we need more developer support like the Asus and xoom if you look at their forums they already have custom themes I want that but even if we don't get it oh well I still love my tablet the same

I enjoy the hell out of mine. I didn't buy it to be a supercomputer, if I wanted an Ipad2 I would have bought one. Plain and simple, the Iconia does what I bought it for, web browsing, music, video and a few games now and then. It came down to a choice between a new laptop or a tablet. I wanted the portability of the tablet and didn't want another device tethered to Itunes. I'm glad I bought mine and I also understand this tablet is still very early in its development and should mature well over time. Did I expect absolute perfection from day one, nope, but I'm glad I got what I did and I'm going to stick with it.

Love mine for many reasons, but this is #1

I use a 1TB WD drive on mine, works great.

just to be fair with Acer, after the latest update, my 2 main issues (wake up bug and dead GPS), seem to be solved. Thanks for listening, Acer.

This is how I feel as well. You know they get it right when you can't see yourself without a certain piece of tech.
Can you live without a cell phone? Sure! Would you if you didn't have to? Doubtful.
This is the sentiment I hold for my A500. I will be the first to admit that it's not necessary. But boy is life better/more convenient, etc. with it around.
I won't complain about the price, though I suspect Acer could have done a little better than $450. Still, we are paying a premium as somewhat, first adopters. Eventually I'm sure parts will become cheaper, as well as assembly and somewhere down the line the price will be more in line with what I consider to be perfect (aka $400 or less).

Your reasons were exactly why I went with the Acer over the Xoom although Im pretty sure they will get things sorted out. I hope both are a success as I really want to see some app development on the commercial side (games etc).

F###ING AMAZING. Despite the problems i'm not leaving this phone, I love it.

Well... every other post is about Evo 4g love affair, so lets not
my only gripe is no voice & data at the sametime, other than that i am enjoying the EVO (atleast within my 30 day window haha). i am recently enjoying the linking of contacts to social networks and other items as well linking Qik to facebook to provide links to videos i posted without having to do it manually.
very cool phone, walk around in the airport listening to music, get the ok from pilot for electronics, switch to a movie, read the usatoday, send my wife a msg on gtalk, flip back to movie, etc etc etc
I love my EVO too which is why I am so sad that HTC put a cap on the graphics and I may have to return it...

+1 for this topic! I love mine as well. Amazing phone despite the negative reports (which I only experience a few of personally).
Good thread. I love my EVO too. The problems worry me but I still prefer it to the iPhone 3GS I just left, and to the iPhone 4 that is coming out. So far I haven't noticed touch screen issues or screen seperation. But this phone is still awesome. I would replace it though if there was a 4.3"-5" nexus one though
I am coming from a mogul, so things are night and day.
I am very happy with the evo...
yes I have seen wifi slowdown: max 5000kbps down, 1000 up with a only the dot as an indication; Performance degrades significantly if hand is placed over the kickstand area. Battery life is as expected for heavy use (12hrs, blue tooth & 3g data all day, 20% screen brightness). I see the screen lifting ever so slightly and can barely see light creeping though at night, but I got a seidio case which seems to keep everything snug, if it gets worse I'll do the black silicone trick. Barring the fact that I haven't found a file encryption package, or a way to easily back everything up (as i could with sprite backup on wm)......that is ...yet.
I love this thing and use it all day. The speech to text is awesome (I laught to think that I was worried about a keyboard!)
the wifee got one too. she is happy as she has never had a smartphone or anything that could do email/internet. I showed her the problem with the display(slight lifting & setting on a table-top slider), and she gave me a dumb look and said "so, whats the problem? " .... I left it at that.
you will never have a perfect production run, there will always be software bugs, lets home that HTC will improve their processes, make current customers happy (returns & repair and or replacements), and will get together with sprint for an action plan including the release with fixes to the current problems with a easy to root, android 2.2 update.

It's the way people have been conditioned lately...for instance...when was the last time you heard of a happy marriage? but I bet you heard of a **** ton of divorces and unhappy marriages...no one goes out singing high praises anymore, it's always complaints and *****ing.
On a brighter note, yes, the phone has it's problems...it wouldn't be a consumer grade electronic device if it didn't. I personally LOVE it.
No issues here. Coming from an AT&T Tilt, so consider my world rocked at the moment.

You and me both, and I was running android on it, so even with the fps cap, the EVO is faster I can't think of another phone I would rather have right now despite the issues. Have had zero hardware issues and can fairly easily get 20+ hours of battery life with moderate usage. Quite happy...

In all seriousness, I don't know that I have turned on my laptop more than once or twice since I got my EVO, I think that it hits the perfect balance of screen size and pocketability for light internet surfing/email/blog reading/Facebook/etc. such that it makes a full sized computer almost irrelevant. Just MHO.

How much do you love your GTab?

So far I've been extremely happy with my tab. In fact it works so well that my wife confiscated my 16gb white and I needed to get myself a new 32gb gray. The baby loves it too.he gets to watch cartoons while the wifey drives around. How about you fellas? Anyone have a good story?

im loving it and glad you posted this thread... every thread in here is about peoples problems... but ive had none, sure is there a slight lag in typing in a browser? at times but its nothing to me... so far so good...
im actually afraid of the touchwiz update because i dont wanna mess up a good thing...
I’ve loved mine since day one. The trouble now is that my wife has discovered how good it is.
Loving my tab. So far I have gotten a couple of my friends on the bandwagon, now that netflix works and we can stream hulu and full flash support, it’s hard to compete against.
I like my 10.1 but made it a personal policy to never fall in love with gadgets since there's always a shinier newer one just around the corner.

I'm hoping Samsung pushes out a couple updates for this thing.
As it stands though, I'm happy with it so far. Opera works better than stock though it's erased one or two text entries, randomly, on me.

definitely love it. I'm in the process of integrating it into my daily leisure and professional routines:
using the tab to make meeting presentations (need the HDMI adaptor)
using the tab for default pdf reader, ultimately going paperless (need a better pdf app, that you can highlight and mark text)
using the tab as the only personal notebook (need a good scribble app, right now i have apmemo but its not optimized for HC)
of course, I am using all the basic features, movies/music/browsing/gaming.
Definitely love it.

totally love it !
i bought one and a week later got another one for my wife.
i've used an ipad and a viewsonic -
in performance, build quality, look and feel - neither one is overall as good as the sgt !!!
About this much. *holds arms out wide*
I am enjoying mine quite a bit, only had it for a week. I had a 7" Tab previously and also have an iPad. I really miss the Micro SD card slot from the 1st gen Tab. I really liked being able to manage my media on the cards and pop in a card with a movie on it. So I have to say that I HATE the iPad style built-in memory without any expandability. It's one of the things I thought was a big Android advantage that Samsung chose to remove in this new Tab. For that reason I have been eyeing the Asus Transformer but I like the screen and form factor better on the Tab. So I would dump the Tab for another honeycomb tablet with removable storage if it matched the screen and was reasonably thin and light like the Tab 10.1. I would also like to have 3G capability although that's not a deal breaker since I have hotspot capability with my iPhone 4.
I also love the battery life... I basically charge it like 1 night during the week, and it lasts till the weekend... I'm at work all day so only can get on it at night, but you can leave that thing sitting on forever and it barely drains at all...
Just picked it up last night from staples. Last one in stock.
So far loving it.

Same here, i'm living in france and got a US one from a website. It's a pleasure to use it, and as i also have an Acer Iconia A500, i prefer to play with the gtab...it really rocks.
A little bit of smiling now. At my work, a guy was offered an Ipad2 for his birthday wich is a great gift...but...his notebook had problem with the USB port...too bad, cos the first thing an ipad tell you is ...plug me into iTunes...So the guy wasn't able to use his ipad till he fixed the usb port pb. Next...every apps that he download for his iphone 4, go directly onto the ipad screen...he said...i have to rearrange every thing now, and there's a lot of app not compatible with it.
I told him he should go for android devices ...at least you only need a free wifi spot to get something, but you can play as soon as it is out of the box.
Love it so much that i bought a bunch of accessories to keep it happy

He was with me in the worst of times (Sony x10), and the best of times (HTC sensation, Samsung Galaxy S2).
He helped me not to lose my way (GPS), and always had something funny to say! (Youtube, twitter, joke of the day via google)
He always disliked fellow OS's that thought they had something he didn't (apple, blackberry, and most of all.....windows)
But he was NEVER a hater.....
He was the original TRAIL BLAZER, as we can all attest to his sense of voyeurism, and his want; no NEED, to be the pioneer and game changer in the washed out industry of cellular.
How can we forget his track ball that notified us who was contacting us? Or was that his way of saying.......... "Don't you forget about me." (Simple minds)
In my mind he will always be number 1. And his good friends CM7, MIUI have and will always have fond things to say about him.
I remember Steve Kondik saying once "Do you remember that one time he forgot to flash the gapps??? How embarrassing, HAHAHAHA!" It wasn't funny back then, but as time went on, the humour of the situation began to shine thru! I saw my N1 crack a smile......
He went thru numerous surgeries, swap-outs, re-boots, and firmware upgrades. And lived to tell another story.
He loved desert. Ones worth mentioning were eclair, frozen yogurt, and gingerbread. A funny thing about N1; he was always the first to the table with spoon in hand.
As we speak he is being sold for parts on Craigslist. However he was always greater than the sum of his parts.
Thank you N1!

How do you like it so far, coming from N1 to the GN, Ive been debating on it for a while now. Mines not dead yet got Medroid ICS running currently, but in the future when the prices drop and there are a few used ones running around, Is it a good phone worth getting. Basically what i'm asking is from your personal preferences a list of pros and cons about it.

One of the issues with the n1 was the lack of internal memory. That ALWAYS drove me bananas. That ASIDE, it still went toe-to-toe with the heavy weights out there! My thoughts are because it was meant to be a developers phone. If you were to look at the specs of the n1 against other phones in its prime time, you would think that it would not compare. Build quality was awesome, and with android it was a match made in heaven (thanks Cyanogenmod) .
I thought a bit about what phone to get next. Creeping thru XDA helped my decision on the gnex as well as the nexus one. Both devices had/have HUGE Developer support (see cyanogenmod, aokp , miui, fransisco Franco just to name a few......)
This was my deciding factor in choosing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. As well as ICS outta the box with hardware acceleration.
Did I forget anything, lol?!

It was a good poem, but can't really agree to it being a sad day. I don't know, I guess I don't wholeheartedly attach to any phone I buy. Sure, it's a great phone and I don't know what I would do without it, but I wouldn't mind switching it for a better one any day of the week. Though, if my only alternative was an iPhone 4S, I'd stick with the Nexus.
Regarding the internal memory. That doesn't bother me much with the use of an A2SD script. But the seemingly unsolvable issue with not being able to download big market apps is one thing that really drives me crazy.

So...who else is getting a Padfone?

THERE IS A PADPHONE FORUM ALREADY •• THREAD CLOSED
I am likely going to be saying bye-bye to my beloved HTC Glacier this April when the Padfone comes out, especially since it's pretty much confirmed that the Padfone works with the TF101 dock I already own.
Skip to 50 seconds in for the great news:
Don't worry, my TF101 isn't going anywhere.
EDIT: Oh, and in case anyone notices, the capacitive buttons on that prototype piece from the video doesn't exist in the production version they showed at the MWC (it's not even the same form factor):

Meh. I am not even that excited about it.
The illusion is that you get three portable devices with one, but the reality is that you only have one device that can fully function on its own--the Padfone itself.

So the tablet doesn't even function unless the phone is docked inside it. No thanks. Honestly, I would rather have a good phone and a good tablet.
There will be other new tablets coming out. Way too early to make any kind of decision.

You're in a Transformer forum. That's like complaining that the keyboard dock doesn't function without the tablet. The "tablet" ACCESSORY of the Padfone, is just that: an accessory. Meaning, if you don't want to, you don't have to buy it. To me, it's just another (highly functional) dock. And this is coming from someone that DOES own a good phone and two good tablets.
And I HIGHLY doubt that the tablet accessory will be anywhere near the price of an actual tablet. If they don't go too crazy on pricing, it'd be nice to essentially have half your 3G/4G enabled tablet subsidized. That is, if ASUS hooks up with a proper carrier.

Eh? Even though luna_c666 and I have been disagreeable, I have to defend him here. The fact he joined only 3 months ago actually makes him look good because of his post count and the amount of thanks received. His contribution to the community is far greater than yours.
Not sure why you are calling him angry. His post didn't show any anger. Just his personal opinion on the matter. From my point of view, it looks like you are angry over his indifference to padfone.
Not sure why you are flaming me either. You mad because I am not chanting praises for padfone? I am entitled to my personal opinion and I wasn't attacking anyone while doing so.
I would go on and rip you a new one but I really don't want another infraction so i will end it here.

Meh. I am not even that excited about it.
So the tablet doesn't even function unless the phone is docked inside it. No thanks. Honestly, I would rather have a good phone and a good tablet.
There will be other new tablets coming out. Way too early to make any kind of decision.

See, for me, that's a plus. I have a phone and a tablet. What I want is a unified device. I currently have one set of apps on my Nexus S, and another set on my Transformer.
Padfone will give me One Device to Rule Them All (as it were).
Can't wait.
Look at it this way - how often have you been using your tablet and your phone at the same time? I'm guessing not very often.
Also, you'll have a single call and data plan, because it's still only one device. I don't know whether American networks will defecate masonry over such an idea, but over here, I think it'll be fantastic.

Heh. That's a good analogy, actually. It's not a separate tablet, it's just a phone, that you can make REALLY BIG when you need to. Combine it wtih the keyboard dock, it's also an Android netbook. Even better. 3-for-the-price-of-one. And if I can keep my TF101 dock? Money saved
I already found buyers for my Transformer and iPhone 4S. Padfone is going to be my first "compromise free" device since HTC Universal. I can't wait to have it at home.
Nah, feels gimmicky considering I have a tablet and a phone already that don't depend on each other.

This is how I feel. It will seriously consider if it they get it to the US and its on my carrier when the upgrade comes around and the pricing for the "tablet" is fair. It should be cheap since it doesn't have any processing power, its just a touchscreen with a battery.
I love my OG transformer but it is true that I have to sync functionality across the devices at times. The idea that I could have my phone plugged into a large screen and a keyboard and simultaneously charging while I am working on a plane only to get off the plane, have the completed PowerPoint still on the phone and the phone 100% charged seems like a great idea.
Its time has finally come now that Android supports both interfaces in the same OS. Motorola's implementation was crap, with their terrible web-top skin.

That is the other thing I was considering too. Now you either have to pay a separate plan or hack your phone and wirelessly tether, killing its battery. ASUS said the tablet has an antenna in it that hooks to the phone to boost reception too, so using the bluetooth if you were in a cave docking the phone might even make its phone performance better.

Actually, the only way I'm getting this (unlike the Verizon Xoom) is that Asus doesn't hook up with a carrier.
I like to buy my gadgets without a monthly bill thank you. And I already have cellphone services.

Galaxy Note... still happy

I have had my Note for about 2 months now. I continue to be very happy with my purchase, and I have become very accustomed to the 5.3" screen. Its hard to look at other people's small 3.5" screens and not laugh.
I just wondered what everyone else's experiences have been, and are you enjoying your Note? Any regrets?
See ya
JOHN
I don't really use mine anymore.
I carry my 4S and a Galaxy Nexus.
I'm pretty disappointed in Samsung's lack of 4.0 update as well. Meh.

Still LOVE my NOTE!!! I own other devices and even own the Galaxy Nexus but this is BY FAR my FAVORITE device right now and probably my favorite device since owning Android devices!!!
+1 on the Screen Size thing too!!! This thing is a SEXY BEAST!!!
I am very happy with my Note. Had it for about 3 weeks now. I love the big screen and the fast cpu. Only thing I miss is 4.0.
Coming from Galaxy Nexus I miss a bit. But when we get it, it will be game over.
I have mine for about 2 months too !
and I love it !!!!
2nd Month, Never been happier with a phone like this.
Not missing anything, Has everything I expect in a Mobile Device.
I'm quite happy with it, but a few days ago I damn near sold it for a Nexus. I don't use the stylus much any more, and would love to have something slightly more pocketable. I still might do it.
I have had mine for a month and I cant stop playing with it. I still have my epic 4g touch galaxy s 2 and I can't stand using it because the screen is too small!

Galaxy Nexus is a great phone. But you might regret that trade.
I've criticized Galaxy Note on multiple occasions, mostly on the stylus-relate software that has plenty of rough corners and completely dysfunctional behaviour. That said, I criticize everything anyways, it's only healthy to be able to see both upsides and downsides and not just get blinded by one's own rose-tinted glasses.
However, despite its few shortcomings I still view it as a really nice phone and I see no reason to bother with other phones at the moment. Personally I'd love to run MeeGo on it, have an actual hardware button for camera, and have NFC on it, otherwise I find it perfectly useable and fulfilling. I do not know of any currently-selling phone model that would offer MeeGo+NFC+H/W camera button+5.3" 720p S-AMOLED-screen+microSD-support+proper digitizer pen, and thus I will be using my Note for years to come.
I've.had my note for about 2 months..it's the perfect mobile device I'm my eyes...I really don't use the stylus much...I honestly wish the screen was bigger 6 inch screen....I have large hands I was very happy when this fone was released....I don't need ICS to complete the deal....

Obviously blinded by the sun and thus stumbled whilst leaving the basement having a temper tantrum.....still can't find his dummy.
I love my galaxy note. As mentioned before, going back to smaller screens feels weird.
As of the galaxy nexus... Had that, no comparison to the note. ICS might be nice, but: can anyone tell me what FUNCTIONALITY they gained??? Only thing I know is I can't mount my sd card anymore on a PC... And 16GB of memory, no sd card neither... Please... The display is nice for the little device, though completely unusable if you want some correct colours...
The note... Gorgeous, huge display, battery, yet slim. Pen input (note taking and all else) is splendid. Would have a hard time losing that.
I'm looking forward to the ICS update for the additional pen functionality, not that much for the Android update... A side note to those who need ICS on the very first day: many applications didn't handle it very well, it's but now, that it starts working out. No wonder with a slim percentage of devices having it. I definitely prefer waiting a bit longer until things have settled...
N7000 rocks!
atm i have ipod touch 4g and galaxy note white. I cant imagine my life without note, especially when appeared dungeon hunters 3 game for android
Very happy. Sometimes i think...man, it's just too big, but then i use it and all this go away cause i realize why it's so big.
And come on, really guys, stop whining about ICS...i mean can't you just wait one more month ? ICS update is just one con...there's a lot of pros you seem to be forgetting.
I am extremely happy with my Galaxy note, had it since November and its still in perfect condition with no scratches on it whatsoever except that it sometimes need cleaning to keep it shiny as for the phone...I can't imagine going any smaller than 5" and for £629.99 that I paid...it was money well spent, I would have easily paid £800 for it, the best phone on the market even against those quad-cores because I don't think that much power is actually needed or will ever get used.
Had mine for 5 months. I use it as my office and no other phone I'v seen can do the job this beast can. Am still very happy
I love my phone it is gifted from my girlfriend , I became addicted to it, now i dont like any other phones because
1. they are not HD amoled screen looking at them is not pleasant to eyes somewhat annoying.
2. I am addicted to size of its screen which is awesome and very good size people really get curious when they see such big screen.
3. I am more of software person so installing and running application is very good in note.
4. Battery is also good.
5. Color is white.
6. AWesome loud ringtone.
7. easy to use cr4cked applications
8. latest phone
and the list goes on and on but enough for now
no offence to any other phone holders : Peace:
