Judges'comments
"A phenomenal success around the world, this has outperformed all its Android rivals and demonstrated the maturity of the ecosystem."

It is a pretty awesome phone eh

SGS II was the top gamma phone for android before cwm 2012... it's a very investiment for me

Best phone I ever had. I was doing the SGS2 for about 3 months when the iPhone 4S came out. Got it to try it for a bit, sold it after 2 days. That's how awesome the SGS2 is

Best smartphone in the market hands down. Im so glad I left the BB world and that I didnt get in Iphone train.

Very proud of you samsung
Best manufacturer & best smartphone are surely the best 2 awards to win.

It's a nice enough phone but it didn't leave me with that amazing feeling the desire did before.

Can't say that I'm surprised by this I mean the phone felt like it was the best phone the moment I touched it!

This is the first phone I've had where I haven't felt the need to keep updated on all the new phones coming out. I really am not left wanting or desiring anything in a phone that this phone doesn't already have!

Ditto! Coming from the flawed SE Aino this phone was a real treat lol.. My first fully touchscreen phone too.

That's pure nostalgia bud. My missus has a desire and it's so far behind this handset. I was the one that convinced her to get it and it surely was a nice phone, but....
The S2 is superior in so many ways.
This is just an Android phone, but it's an Android phone finally done right.

I was torn between the S II and the HTC Sensation, but after listening to a few minutes of the background music in that video, I am leaning towards the Sensation.

I was also hesitating between the two and what motivated my choice was the screen (AMOLED really is impressive), the amount of ram and the unlocked bootloader, which is a great deal for me.
I think the Sensation could turn out to be a bit of a disappointment. The SGSII is a bit more future-proof IMO, and I think it's good enough to take on Apple when they come out all guns blazing with the iPhone 5.
For me the SGSII will be THE Android phone of 2011.

I think you're probably right, and hopefully both the S II and Sensation will launch around the same time in the US so I can check each one out. If not, I will probably go with the one that launches first. Unfortunately, I don't focus too much on future proofing, because I know that in a year, whether I need it or not, I'll be checking out the quad cores!
I had my few years with iPhone and that is enough to last me a lifetime. It's great for competition, but the way Android phones are being released, Apple will never be in the lead for long if they release one high-end phone ever 12 months or longer (as far as "best" device, they'll still sell a boatload).
The vid was amazing.. Thanks
I've had my SGS II for a week now and I can safely say this is the best smartphone to date IMHO. I've owned every premium smartphone to come out of HTC (Android & WP7), Apple, and Samsung camps for the last 3 years, and this easily tops them all. I only wish they had thrown in NFC for these European variants of SGS II. I have no complaints over the screen resolution as the extra few pixels on the iPhone 4 and HTC Sensation screens make hardly a noticeable difference. What makes the difference is the quality of this SAMOLED+ screen. It is amazing for browsing, media playback and gaming. Obviously I have not seen the HTC Sensation in flesh, but based on what I have heard in their launch speech, IMO it will not be able to take the crown from SGS II as the flagship Android handset. With the SGS II, Android comes to life the way it never has before.

Ahh I see. I saw the leaked photo of the US Galaxy S2 family and while they're all nice I can't help but think the International version looks better. Plus I'm not sure whether I'd fancy the bigger screen, 4.3" seems to be the sweet spot for myself.
Here we are, with our SGSII's... as early adopters....
And now they release what it probably should have been in the first place with proper firmware probably.
Oh well, it's always the same
good bye SGS2 !
wait until they are benchmarked and the first problems arise.
I wonder if it's a Qualcomm SOC or Exynos. Exynos demolishes Qualcomm's offerings at the moment
honestly, the pace at which android phones are being upgraded is dizzying. This is one of the reasons many stick with the iphone. This is giving me crazy phone upgrade cravings :|

And this is a bad thing in your world...yes???
...with an iPhone upgrade due any time now too??
Its good and bad at the same time I think. Gonna stick it out for a long yime with the sgs2 but the cravings will persisy unfortunately. No cravings yet though, love this phone.
agreed to #15.
1) is there a need for another 0.2" of screen estate?
my take : 4.3" sgs2 is the sweet spot for me. i have trouble swiping my thumb across the whole screen already.
2) is there a need for an extra 0.3mhz of processor or 1850mah battery?
my take : setcpu is the answer.
extended battery pack aren't expensive on ebay.
My opinions
The extra processing power and screen estate will nullify the increase in capacity of batt. furthermore, the perennial dual core issue is still unfixed in 2.3.4. and samsung have the balls to release another "beta" phone.
my hunch
samsung is trying hard to best iphone5 and downplay it's "wow factor" in sept. notice the link? 4.5, dual core 1.5, it's all marketing numbers. like megapixel wars. no doubt, people will start comparing iphone 5 with 4.5" S2 in terms of raw power. that's what sammy wants.
but for what apple did, whoring over patents. go smash iphone5 to pieces man, sammy. we'll love a phone war anytime.
conclusion
4.5" S2 is a marketing gadget.
SGS2 has already covered much that we (a typical consumer) need.
If there's anything to look, go for tablets tegra kai-el releasing in a few months time.
I'm sure 4.5" S2 would look like phone drenched in cat piss in a few months time.
go for 4.5" S2 if...
you want lte.
you want nfc. ironically 4.3" S2 korea has it.
you use gadgets, not the other way around! ^^;
If they improve the sound quality and Supercurio brings voodoo to it, I'll be all over it.

Decent analysis and I think I pretty much concur. However, I don't think (and I'm not suggesting that you do either) that Samsung are doing this to piss off early adopters or force us to upgrade - they haven't even changed the name for starters, so there is no real sense of this being something new.
Marketing gimmick? Possibly, but only hardcore techies are going to be influenced by the marginal increase in specs.
So I suspect that the bits they use to make the device have moved on - if you can get a 4.5" screen at the same price as the old 4.3", why not use it...?
This is a gentle evolution in my book, not a massive statement.
If you have a GS2 there is no reason at all to go for that phone, a 4.5" screen imo will make the phone a little on the large side and this phone can be over-clocked if desired, I don't see the point of it.
What about SUPER AMOLED HD display that was talked about ??

I own two Captivates and a Nexus One. I would not recommend switching to Samsung. I have been so dissatisfied with my Captivate that I am holding out on my upgrade and passing up the SGS2 and Skyrocket in hopes that HTC will deliver something of decent quality on ATT. I've even contemplated switching my main phone back to the Nexus One until something better arrives.
The fact that I'm still stuck on Froyo is absolutely ridiculous. If the Captivate was a low grade phone that would be one story. But the Galaxy S line was a premier lineup when it was released. If you want to feel cheated by a company, join up with Samsung.
Yes there are custom ROMs but without the release of source code they all have problems and bugs. I ran GB through Apex for a long time but eventually got tired of the phone dialer apk crashing every day. Also, some people can't use custom ROMs due to work and Android development is important to them.
I'll admit there are things I like about my Cappy: Super AMOLED screen, screen size, overall smooth performance, plenty of dev work on Samsung phones. But the lack of Android support by Samsung, the poor GPS performance with no fix, and the random shut down problems left a very bad taste in my mouth.
Not to mention, the nice feel of a sturdy metal HTC phone is miles beyond the cheap plastic feel of a Samsung phone. Just trying to give my 2 cents. I'd be glad to share any of my experiences in as much of a non biased way as I can.

i have had great luck with the tmo sgs2. it's build quality, though plastic, it quite good.
imho
Yeah, I'm waiting for a good HTC phone to come out to replace my N1. I can't stand the plasticy feel of the SGII or the Galaxy Nexus.
Hopefully, we'll see something good from HTC during CES next week. I've heard rumors of a quad-core HTC phone. Let's hope so.
I had the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE from Rogers and the phone felt so plasticky. There's nothing appealing about Samsung devices. Their RF and call quality are poor. I ended up getting the HTC Amaze and I have no regrets. The build quality on the Amaze trumps any Samsung. Call quality & RF is much better. I'm hoping HTC will announce the rumored HTC Edge quad-core next week. It's too bad Google switched to Samsung to make their devices. I'm not impressed with the build quality of the Galaxy Nexus. It feels plasticky. I prefer the solid feel of a device even if it weighs more.
I will at least concede that the plastic was sturdier than I thought. I've had my Captivate since July 2010 and it has survived some big falls and hits. However, the lack of support from Samsung is just too much for me to overcome.

I've seen some rumors that would point to this as well but I have a feeling it will still be a plastic styled phone. It wasn't until late December when HTC announced they were going to change their focus in 2012 to produce better quality builds and get away from the cheap feeling phones. I find it hard to believe they would wait so long for that announcement and then have a non-plastic phone at CES.
But who knows...if they do, I will be excited. I just sold my Nexus One today and it hurt a little inside. Such a good phone with a great feel and quality build. Would love to have another HTC in my pocket to replace the Samsung.
HTC vs. Samsung
body vs. screen
looks vs. graphics performance
I'm waiting for the coming wave. The OG Droid opened the doors for the 2010 wave, but the N1 was the best buy two years ago because it was the first that could stand in line with the new wave of superphones (1 GHz, OLED, etc.). The GN may have started the new wave of 2012, but it's not gonna stand with the rest of the quad-cores (and it's missing external storage?!??!).
I'm still waiting. Next wave is a new day for competition between HTC and Samsung. I'm excited.

Agreed, Tegra 3 phones may start the new wave with the 5th low power core. Seems fairly revolutionary to me.
A friend has a galaxy note and loves it. The fonts are larger on the home screen for vision impaired. This week is CES so maybe HTC will have some surprises.

NEVER! Their phones are made of cheap plastic. After spending so much on a phone, you atleast would like to get a good feel of the phone....not like the ones samsung makes.
HTC Rocks....All time!!! They know how to make phones.

Can you elaborate?
Specifically, does it fit in your pocket? front pant's pocket? (trousers )
Which case do you use?
Thanks
I don't use a case, and it fits in my pocket perfectly. In fact, I had an issue with the N1 falling horizontal in my pocket, which was uncomfortable - I no longer have that issue.
Build quality looks great, though I do love the N1 more. Feel is much better on the GN, much more responsive, and smooth - but then again, what would you expect for the specs?
The LED notifications aren't as cool as the N1, and the lack of trackball can be a pain...
tried the gn at verizon as i am only a year into 2 year tmo contract, can't buy
loved size and text reading
build seemed ok, not as good as n1--but it was strapped down
8-13 mb dl's on speedteast
no smoother than n1 ics rom i am on--imho
faster webbrowsing--but seemed no faster than my wifi which clocks in at 4-5mb
didn't like menu buttons
when scrolling there is a jitter and out of focus look, then it refocuses
will look at sgsII at tmo, but will, with contract restrictions, probably be looking at quads
It's certainly not way ahead of the pack, like the N1 was when it was released (and for a long time afterwards)...
People are reporting 10 - 15 mb downloads on 4g, but it never get anything like that in this area (with 5 different phones)
I recommend you ditch the contract with T-Mo if you can. No contact options are about $20 a month less than contact, which is $480 over the 2 year duration. Just a suggestion...
thanks DR
I have 3 phones on the contract, may not be financially smart atm
will look into it--was hoping for tmo to pick it up--like the speed and large text
do you have the scroll jitter and focus issue I described, may be normal
was looking at new blaze coming to tmo also--42mb phone
http://wirelessandmobilenews.com/2012/01/samsung-galaxy-blaze-4g-hd-spec-revealed-nexus-hd.html
but as you know, the n1 seems ageless with running ics now--tough choices

What's your motivation towards upgrading to Galaxy SIII

I believe many of you have come from galaxy SII or any other high end devices. I've had galaxy SII for 6 months and now I have to decide whether buy a galaxy SIII or not.I know S3 is much more powerful but seems to lack to present real new features. I doubt Whether it's worthy to upgrade or not. I would like to hear your opinion, however I appreciate sincere answers not only some radical misjudges.

I have the Epic Touch on Sprint (GS2), and I preordered. However, the more reviews I saw and sample photos and the like, I couldn't see that it was worth the upgrade and a new 2-year jail sentence with Sprint. I cancelled my preorder and will stay with the Epic Touch, which I'm very pleased with.
I'll say why I upgraded from my SGS2 which I loved, bigger is better. Wanted a bigger screen but not to sacrifice pocketability, so 4.7 or 4.8 was the ideal size next compared to the GNote.
I'm a sucker for new technology so quad core performance.
I went with the HOX to have a change. Also got the sgs3 to test so will say why I think it's a a good upgrade.
Bigger HD screen. Once you go HD you'll love it.
Notification light very useful from my BlackBerry days for multiple events.
Wolfson DAC s2 sound quality wasn't the best so having a Wolfson back is a pleasant move and if supercurio brings voodoo sound it'll be even better.
Better camera.
Quad core, it's fast but the sgs2 is no slouch either. Nothing maximises quad yet.
New Touchwiz slightly better than the previous version but not a sole reason to upgrade.
Smart stay is useful in certain situations.
It's an upgrade but not a huge upgrade. I still think if your happy with the sgs2 then no need to upgrade best to wait for prices to drop then make the move and any initial issues to be sorted out. My one has the yellow tint.

My Galaxy Nexus is like 8 months old, and looks about 5 years old the paint is mullered, the metal round camera is scuffed basically it looks ****ed.
My S2 never looked like that even after 18 months.
I have been out of contract for about four months, rocking a Thunderbolt, and I was just bored to tears with it. I've done all the ROM's and just wanted to move on.
I really considered dumping VZ, but it's hard to walk away from that damn network lol. I didn't see any other phone coming soon that interested me, including the HOX. I need sd card and removable battery, otherwise I'd be using an iphone.
Great specs need something else to play with as my nexus is phasing out.
This is not just a phone - Galaxy Nexus
I've been on an Epic 4G (Sprint's original Galaxy S) since it's launch. It's feeling quite dated even though CM9 has given it some new life. It was between the SGSIII or the HTC EVO LTE (One X). The non-removable battery on the HTC made my decision pretty easy.
I'm still more than happy with my sgs2, I won't be upgrading yet, this will do till the sgs4 - a real upgrade

I loved T-mobile's Galaxy s2, so the s3 was a must have.
I have a HTC Aria, its 2 years old only has 3G on it, iPhone size screen. I'm ready to upgrade. The battery life of the S3, doubles mine, the 2GB ram quadruples mine, and the processor well lets just not compare those.
Haha had an aria as well for a year then got an inspire... I thought I was making a huge jump
"All this knowledge is giving me a major brainer!"
My first Droid (coming from iPhone 3Gs) is this Thrill 4G. I went by specs and the 3D feature. Everyone said it was a gimmick, but I liked it and it will be the only thing I will miss about it.
Anyway, it turned out to be a real dog. Nothing but issues with my music (especially playlists), missed calls that it doesn't tell me about but I get the messages, slow camera and I could go on. I have restored it, rooted it, tweaked it and I am sick of it.
Two of my friends have GS2s and they have always been so much better and faster. So much more support. So much prettier, snappier, better pictures. But I waited. I waited for the successor. Now it is coming to the U.S. and I can finally trump my buddies! MUHAHAHAH!!! Then one of them ordered the GS3 also, but I'll have mine first! Maybe. Depends on the Judge I suppose.
Anyway, that's my story. Excuse me whilst I go back to converting my 3D pics to 2D.
I've had my captivate since late 2010, and though I've had a faster Android experience with the Transformer Prime, I'm ready to experience it in a phone.
Apart from that, I've really wanted LTE for a whole. 3G is just too slow.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I've had an iPhone 3G (9 of them...) for the past 4 years. It's painstakingly slow! You guys don't even know! If i was being chased by a pack of wild tigers I'd probably get mauled before I could call 911 on this crap. Also for me, iOS is very stale and boring now. I want something new and FRESH! I love customizing everything I own and Android will allow me to do just that.

Worth the upgrade from a 4s!?

Hi guys, just wondering wether is worth upgrading to a s3 from a iPhone 4s?.
Getting bored of the 4s now and fancy a change and something new. I've had androids in the past, Xperia, htc xl etc... Still yet to try out a Samsung phone.
So what you reckon?..

I have both. Believe me it's much better than iPhone 4s. But try a demo in some shop to see if you like it

I believe S3 is better than even iPhone 5. And that's not even released.
Jokes apart, having used both phones, what I liked about 4S was the outrageously smooth UI. But Jelly Bean is going to address that anyway. No other features in iOS are going to compare to the features in Android. What this boils down to now is hardware and S3 hardware is hands down the better.
Since you are asking this in SIII forum, I am guessing you have already made up your mind. Just want people to convince you more?
Thanx for the comments so far guys
My mind is mixed up at the minute, wether to go for it or not!. Whats the battery & picture quality like compared to the 4s?
Battery any good in standby?

Battery lasts for 4 days if you just talk from time to time. Or you will get around 5 hours screen time with decent brightness in 1 day.
Just get the S3 already, you won't regret it!
Sell that junk you're using now to some teenage blond, that's who these phones are made for : )

Battery is overall far better on the S3.
Just default web browsing is better on the 4S, but if you use the reverse rendering (who make white black and black white) the battery life on web brosing far exceed the 4s.
Android, from my point of view put iOs to shame apps integration is far better (you can really share with android not just to email and twitter), google now est faaar better than siri, no comparaison. And well, Android is not a boring Os
if you are from android before then you good to go , if purely ios user then stay at ios cause so most hardcore ios user are ignorant , always asking stupid question they buy a android platform and keep asking why android cant work like ios
No, Apple is soon going to make sure Android is banned all over the world. Don't get on a sinking ship.
crapple vs Android
android banned! wont happen as its against the consumer rights act in the uk and our monopolies commission will see crapple's tactic as an underhand method in control of the market so will NOT allow it in any way shape or form.
Sure as hell it is, especially after cm10 has started rolling out, jelly bean is pure awesome even though it's still in alpha

What's this about I hear the graphics being to cartoonish on the s3?. What's the screen like in direct sunlight?
Well seeing as the only 4s feature I see advertised is siri then I would say definitely s voice struggles to understand me but I am always dubious about voice recognition.
And the s3 has more features than just voice recognition which from what I can see the 4s doesn't.
And don't fuel Apple's monopolizing of the entire computer and phone industry, morals ate more important than features.

Simple answer : if you stay with 4s, you stuck in year 2006. Upgrade to S3 and you are in 2012 July 24th. Your choice.

The original galaxy is a upgrade from the 4s

I upgraded from a 3GS (didn't find the features compelling enough to go to 4, 4S camera was very tempting). I must say the S3 is amazing. You have to get used to it as using an iPhone dumbed me down a bit and the Android OS is a bit more complex.
However the apps I used on the iPhone are all here so that a bonus. In addition the battery can be removed so I can now have double the battery life if I wanted Overall the screen is real nice and speed of the device is amazing. I would recommend this 100%. However make sure you are happy with the size as it is quite large

Regards, Gibbo.

the galaxy s 3 is gonna compete with the iphone 5 or 6 or whatever they gonna call it. 4s is old news so theres your answer.
I've been using android for 2 years now and 6 months ago i decided to try 4S, mainly because it was fast stable and had a great camera. After 2 months I got bored of it, could not take the limitations of the OS (even when Jailbroken) and decided to get the S3. I was a bit sceptic in the beginning but now I think Galaxy S3 is a great phone, better camera, better os, superb screen, sd card slot and excellent battery life are things to consider as well.
