Regular Arc, US unlocked version, rooted to remove some bloatware. I got a notification for the .62 update, but it always fail to install. Does it require the full suite of bloatware to exist for the update?
Mine was also rooted+bloatware removed and it updated without problems.
BUT, you will lose root if you update to .62 (at least with PC companion) + get back bloatware. If you don't have problems with current firmware, stick with it.
You will have to put all bloatware back indeed.
But when you use FOTA, you will keep your root.

Did you update it OTA? I tried OTA, and it keeps failing.

Do I have to put everything back? Or are there certain ones that's critical (eg. timescape) and not others (the games, links)?

I don't think anyone has the answer to this particular question. I guess you should restore (almost ?) every system apps shipped with .42, since you aren't supposed to remove them.

Indeed, I don't know for sure , but I guess every app that you removed from system/app directory should be restored for the update to succeed.
I done a full restore and I have done nothing but root. Ota still fails

I have the same exact problem, mine is only rooted and I can download it but when it is installing fails....???
With my Arc on .42, I had to restore every single bloatware or file that I had moved from system/apps before it would let me update via OTA to .62 (including but not limited to WisePilot, Chinese keyboard, Let's Golf! etcetera).
But apparently, this issue isn't so in all regions as some people have reported success even with a modified system/apps folder. But if you do encounter any error, well, now you know.
Furthermore, root is preserved while updating through OTA.

Now i can't recive any updates OTA, and i get this message..:

Once again, if you are rooted, it doesnt matter how, you CANNOT accept ota update.
If you deleted something you shouldnt have, then restore the backup to that, or do a factory reset and re-root.
Ok i just figures since it was TEMProot that it didn't matter. Tnx for the reply, tried the factory default option (no luck), is there any place where I can get the Stock firmware to re-flash the phone?
Or would anyone in here recommend another rom ? Tons of custom roms, as I can tell.

Got the same problem -- some time ago I removed some "useless" apps from my /system/app folder, and when 1.72 update was released I wasn't able to install it in any way (I was trying to follow this guide). I restored the missing apps, and then everything went fine using the guide mentioned above!

Sorry but that ain't correct... You *can* update your phone if you're rooted, the main problem is that root will be gone after update. The best solution is to *always* reject OTA updates provided by HTC and wait until devs here have found a safe way to update your device without losing root privileges.

Thank you all, it gave perfectly sense since I'm quite happy with the stock firmware, i'll stick with this. The root is not so necessary for me at least for now
I'm glad it was corrected that visionary did not remove the ability for OTA, that was also what I've read before used it.

The short answer is - no.
The longer answer is - you won't get the update unless you flash it manually as PD15IMG (which wipes and reformats everything anyway).

No. Once you get the official OTA you will be subject to all the T-mobile bloatware. If you really want the stock gingerbread ROM, there is a rooted version with and without the new radio in the development forums.
You can get rid of the bloatware or you can have the gb update, but you cant do both until an exploit to root the update comes out.

I understood what you've meant, and the answer doesn't change - no, you can't do it, the OTA will bring EVERYTHING on the system back to stock or won't work at all.

just saw that amazon is pushing the next OTA - 6.2.2
this time i could again verify this method to prevent the OTA:
i deleted /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip - watched the update downloading to the cache folder but did not install - after a reboot the update file was disappeared from the cache folder - i was registered at amazon all the time - and i'm still on 6.2.1
this worked for me - no guarantee
update: worked with 6.3 again !
I assumed the file needs to be permanently removed based your post, but I renamed them to keep them around (I am glad I did)
I did what you recommended and then I rebooted (renamed instead). Once I rebooted though, GMail would crash everytime I tried to use it and the Market said it could not connect. Once I put those files back and reboooted they worked again. So any other ideas would be appreciated.

yes - as i wrote - i deleted otacerts.zip (only this one) from /system/etc/security/ (renamed and moved to sdcard)
i'm using the android market without any problems

I can't delete the file. I have ES File explorer with su privileges... Voodoo is set so I am rooted... I have read/write checked in settings. Is there something I'm missing?
EDIT: Never mind, I just got it. Sorry! Hopefully this works. Has anybody done this and had it update on them?

Probably a silly question, but I suppose if we get the OTA that knocks out recovery as well?
Edit: Perhaps a sillier question, but does having TWRP prevent the OTA anyway? Usually the OTA is flashed via stock recovery, no?

The OTA updates thus far typically overwrite the filesystem, so yes it would knock out recovery. You can use a "patched" ROM that will not touch the partition the recovery data is on.
TWRP does not stop OTA amazon updates if you are running the stock amazon ROM, as it operates at a level outside of the operating system. However, you can use TWRP to load an alternate operating system aka ROM, such as CM7 which would not be subject to amazon's OTA updates.

One thing I've noticed is that it mounts a lot faster when attached to my PC via USB. On 6.2.1, it mounted in about 10 seconds. Now it does it in less than 2.

Just wanted to say that I tried this, and as far as I can tell it worked like a charm. I even tempted fate by hitting 'Sync', but my Kindle refused to update (it wouldn't even attempt to download the update from device settings).
I just flashed the pre-rooted 6.2.2 update and deleted otacerts.zip, so here is hoping they didn't change something to make this not work...

I just wanted to add that I have been blocking the OTA update using Droid Wall. Still running very happy on 6.2.1.
The only down side to this method is having to set permissions initially then updating Droid Wall as I install apps.

I've still got the Market, still have Swype... Sooooo far as I can tell the only thing I lost is Google Currents, which I wasn't finding much useful since the KF doesn't seem to want to let it sync while I'm not around.

I am, unfortunately, running on MF3 firmware still and have my phone rooted and "customized" (ie I have Titanium backup blocking a few files). I'd like to be able to take the OTA update so I can update my firmware which is still pretty outdated (Android 4.2.2).
What do I need to do in order to be able to take the OTA update and what is the best way to proceed? Will the most recent FW version allow me to obtain root permissions or do I need to do something "fancy" like use survival mode in SuperUserSU?

If you have modified or deleted any system files the ota will not work. The latest version, nl1, is rootable with towelroot. If the ota doesn't work then I'd flash the nb1 tar file in Odin, see the general forum, and then ota from there.

I'm sure I have at least frozen some of those files using titanium backup . . . What's the best way to handle it? Do a backup of my TB settings, unfreeze everything, then try to get the OTA update? I haven't even been prompted for an OTA in months and I'm assuming it's because I currently have root and have frozen some of those files . . . Do I need to remove root in order to get the OTA prompt or is it likely a result of me freezing files?

I'm not sure why you haven't gotten the prompt but it's not because of root. Try unfreezing the apps. Make a backup first

If you try to OTA with root, it will get to about 30% and then fail because the update checks for root if it's anything like the at&t update. I suggest unrooting and going back to 100% stock before trying any OTA updates.

My phone keeps bugging me to install OTA update for krack vulnerability. I tried and it sent my phone to boot loop and now I have it restored. My phone has xposed installed. What is the best course of action? I would like to update but if that's not possible can I at least stop having the message show up each time I unlock my phone?
You could try to disable/freeze the Motorola-Updateservices (/system/priv-app/3c_ota/3c_ota.apk) or flash a new full (not OTA) firmware for your device without boot.img, recovery.img and without wiping data.
Beware: After flashing a full firmware, all modifications to the system partition are lost and have to be redone.
I always disable all 3c moto services and never faced problems because of it.

Is that even safe not to apply the patch? I find it hard to believe just because you root your device you can't update it.

Is it a good idea to avoid security updates? No, it isn't. Is it clever to avoid updated drivers? No, it isn't (at least in most cases).
You should have informed yourself about the backdraws of rooting your phone before you did it. You need to be completely on stock firmware without any changes
to the system files to be able to use an OTA for updating your phone. This is needed to be safe the OTA update works the way it should.
The best way for updating a rooted phone is to install the full updated rom, which is easy to get for our device.

Same procedure as on other stock rom versions): you need ElementalX kernel to be flashed and afterwards your desired root method(magisk is recommended).
