OTA fail help

Hello all
Have searched this forum, but im not really sure what to do.
I've used titanium backup to perm remove a few stock apps, the exchange stock app and amazon app
Now i can't recive any updates OTA, and i get this message..:
assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/Stock.apk"....
E:Error in /sdcard/download/OTA_Ace_HTC_WWE_172_405_3_r2_1_32_405_6_release_1632939lowfu0y78jktpp2.zip
(status 7)
using 2.2 android version number 1.32.405.6

You can't accept OTA updates when you are rooted.

I see, but only used temp root with visionary
is that going to affect something?

Or what are my options to get a hold of updates in the future, a costum rom instead? I do kinda like the stock rom, just without stock apps

Once again, if you are rooted, it doesnt matter how, you CANNOT accept ota update.
If you deleted something you shouldnt have, then restore the backup to that, or do a factory reset and re-root.

Ok i just figures since it was TEMProot that it didn't matter. Tnx for the reply, tried the factory default option (no luck), is there any place where I can get the Stock firmware to re-flash the phone?
Or would anyone in here recommend another rom ? Tons of custom roms, as I can tell.

Got the same problem -- some time ago I removed some "useless" apps from my /system/app folder, and when 1.72 update was released I wasn't able to install it in any way (I was trying to follow this guide). I restored the missing apps, and then everything went fine using the guide mentioned above!

Sorry but that ain't correct... You *can* update your phone if you're rooted, the main problem is that root will be gone after update. The best solution is to *always* reject OTA updates provided by HTC and wait until devs here have found a safe way to update your device without losing root privileges.

Thank you all, it gave perfectly sense since I'm quite happy with the stock firmware, i'll stick with this. The root is not so necessary for me at least for now
I'm glad it was corrected that visionary did not remove the ability for OTA, that was also what I've read before used it.

Hey, just bought my Atrix about 2 weeks ago. My first ever smartphone, and i just rooted using the gingerbreak app (lost all my photos) and got the phone setup to install non market apps.
Also, just did the mod to allow the webtop app to work on any hdmi device, thats awesome!!!
I do have a few questions.
Is there a way to get the phone back to stock, or a reason why i would need too?? I noticed that doing a hard reset still leaves the phone rooted.
Can the phone still get updates while rooted?
I just wanted to know incase i had to send it back for any reason.
Also, since i used gingerbreak and modded for the webtop, if att does send an update, say a newer version of Android or Build, will this remove all my mods and root?
Sorry, not very tech when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Don't worry too much. Stick around and when there are updates we'll find out what happens. Usually root access is removed but we always find a way to get it back.

As long as you do not remove or freeze any Moto apps you can still update. If you happen to freeze them, you can just thaw before updates. If you remove them, you will most likely have to flash to stock with either 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 sbf. Also I believe the webtop hack may stop updates.

If you had to return your phone, flashing back to 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 should suffice. It's very easy if you follow the instructions. I usually flash back to 4.1.26 when a new update comes out, then use over the air (OTA) updates to get my phone current anyway just to "clean the pipes" so to speak.
You will pretty much always lose root with an update, but as was said, our wonderful devs will get it back quickly.

I dont plan on removing any moto apps. The webtop hack, all i did was remove 3 files, and replace with the 3 new apk's. Before installing the OTA update, could i just add the 3 stock apks i removed and remove the hack apks?

It's possible it may work.
Also if you flash for example GingerBlur, etc., they will remove Moto apps (bloatware).

With the right apps backup is a snap so its nobig deal to flash a stock sbf for updating purposes.

updating from rooted 2.2

Apologies if this is a noob question. I didn't see any obvious answer to this, and I'm guessing I"m not the only one to question this.
I have a rooted stock 2.2, rooted with Unrevoked3. Now that there's a root exploit for GB, I'm trying to make sense of what I need to do to get the OTA installed.
Reading through the Unrevoked site, it looks like I need to find the appropriate .img first to restore me back to original? And Unrevoked's site directed me back here, but i didn't see where to find the correct file.
Second, I assume, and correct me if I'm wrong, that I simply copy the correct .img file back to my phone (which directory?) and boot up into recover to restore? At that point, i'll be able to get and update with the OTA?

That would certainly be the easiest solution, but i'd rather go OTA for a couple reasons:
1) while absolutely nothing against the great work the devs have done, I've gone back and forth on this and really end up wanting to keep mine stock (with a lot of sprint crap-ware frozen)
2) and a more direct reason for my question in the first place, this isn't just for my own phone, which i don't mind "hacking" with as much, but also for a coworker's phone I've rooted, the wife's (don't want to mess too much with hers) and even the in-law's two phones.
3) least required reason, I have very little actual use for Root, especially on the other listed phones, but the primary requirements on why i've rooted theirs is for wireless tethering and freezing of crapware.

Umm, the stock rooted roms are exactly that: stock, but rooted. Everything is still there.

Again, flashing a stock rooted rom is NO different than taking the ota, except you will stay rooted and will not have to re-root.

OK, well if you don't need root, then take the ota and you will be unrooted.

Ok, fair points. So which rom(s) would be the original stock roms with nothing but Root added?

They would be in the threads that say Stock ROMs

Update from NAE to NG2!

Anyone receive this update yet?

I took the update and my build number updated, but my baseband and software still say NAE (Happened to me late time too) so hopefully the .tar file gets released soon or a way to redownload the update file and place it on my external sd card and reflash it.

Did you have root? Retain root after the update?

Thanks for the reply. I'm all stock with Towelroot only. just wondering if the new "Google security fixes" will break the Towelroot exploit as I'm assuming that it will.
Also assuming that this is pretty much a useless update that only closes that exploit since Sprint was too sorry to include wifi calling as it should have.

Yeah the easiest way for me is to just flash Philz recovery with Odin and it has an option in advanced settings to reroot then just download supersu from the playstore

Worked just like you said. I tried CF-autoroot and did not work for me. Have you been able to get the hot spot mod to work?

I want to do the reverse
I took the OTA to NG2 and now apps that I regularly use (DoggCatcher and Daily Roads) are reporting storage problems and are unable to write to ext SD card, even after applying NextApp fixes. Maybe I need to reset the paths or something, but if that doesnt work, what would be the best way to revert back to NAE?

This is probably stupid and already answered in another thread but I'm a noob, don't flip out on me... Let's say, theoretically, I was to accept the
NG2 update. I'm rooted with Towelroot, using Supersu and Titanium backup. I've backed up then delete almost all of my bloatware with TB and have no further use for root at the time. If I were to break root with the update, will all that stuff stay the same and be safe until I can root again? I.e. If I break root, touch none of those root apps, then root again later, will they even "know" anything happened?

Since you can't take an OTA while rooted, that won't work.

My phone says it has already downloaded it and is pretty enthusiastic about me accepting it. What do I do? Live with the icon in my status bar? Can I remove it? What happens if I hit [accept]?

Long press on notification it should show app info, push on that should take you to the application, then Clear Cache > uncheck Show Notification, that should stop it from showing.

Thanks for posting this...EXACTLY what i was looking for. I didn't even know there was a new update out and this damn thing was nagging me when i woke up this morning. Now the more important question...What does the "HD Voice Icon" look like....lol.
But seriously, if i am stock rooted NAE, is there an upgrade path out there yet, to keep me stock rooted? And what else is in this thing, it's reporting almost 120MB....???

So far from what I have read, I have know idea where the HD Voice Icon is, and no one else does either, not unless it is known in another thread that I don't know about.

You will have to first install the stock NAE tar file with odin to return your phone to a stock unrooted condition with the stock recovery. Then you can take the ota. After that you can reroot again with cf autoroot.

Now the question is can you keep the domestic sim unlock if you do this?

I wish there was an app for rooted users to get notifications about these updates (and maybe offer a way to download a flashable zip as well?)
I got a Nexus 6 because I wanted to be able to always have access to a stable, current version of Android. I didn't realize that OTA updates wouldn't work out of the box with rooted devices though.
Would be nice to have some method to get back that functionality!

Both those things ignore the whole point of what I brought up.
I'm saying it would be nice if there was an equivalent automatic notification/update process for rooted users.

That is the equivalent. Stay stock or manually update. Rooted users don't worry about such a thing, since changing ROMs and adding various features are a common occurrence.

Rooted users don't care about convenience? I dunno about you, but I'm rooted, and I still would prefer to do repetitive/manual processes as little as possible...
You can be a rooted user just to use rooted apps, and not care about trying a different ROM every week. In which case, it would be nice to have the same benefits of automatic updates as stock users. Not sure why you seem to be against the idea?

I would also like that if it was possible...

It is possible. Get notification from XDA users down load ota file someone has probably posted someplace plug in to computer and side load. It usually 1 week faster than waiting your turn to receive ota from carrier's

I don't think this will work. If your N6 is rooted, you can't sideload the OTA file. Your phone will need to be stock (unrooted) to apply the OTA.
You could wait for somebody to publish a flashable zip, or just download the new factory images and use fastboot to flash the new system.img over your existing phone, and reroot.

Isn't there a chance of losing the ability to reroot with this method though? I've been waiting for users to publish flashable zips for this reason, but maybe that is not necessary?

Is there a chance that google will publish a new Nexus factory image that can't be rooted? Sure - in theory, that is possible. But unlikely.
Till date, all nexus devices have been rooted (thanks @Chainfire)

Recently I used both methods just to see if there were differences.
Both had the same results. That means among others that my settings were gone.
- LCD_density defaults (384)
- WiFi interval defaults (was 200)
- Needed to flash Black Google Now Launcher and uninstall Google.app updates to get my black background back.

When you flash a new factory image I'm assuming you flash each partition and avoid flashing the data partition (dirty flash) ?
Does google always post a whole new image for each ota? What about the carrier variants like tmobile? Is there a new image for each ota?

Thanks cam30era. I was a bit concerned that being a stock rooted device might be too much trouble, especially with the security updates. But this looks manageable to me.
