Cotton candy by fxi technologies, now getting pre-orders!! - Member-Found Deals

ANYBODY INTERESTED CAN LOOK UP THE FXI TECH WEBSITE! STARTING PRICE $199..
Norwegian Company FXI have created the world's smallest computer and its literally a thumb drive. The Cotton Candy might not seem much but it does pack a punch, more than some high-end smartphones or tables. In its tiny little gut the Cotton candy houses a 1.2GHz Samsung Exynos ARM CPU, quad-core GPU ARM Mali-400 MP , Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro SD card slot for storage(64Gb max), and a HDMI jack on the opposite end. So what can I do with a thumb drive computer?
The whole idea by FXI here is to allow you to convert your TV or laptop to a Android device; though FXI did mention an Ubuntu version is in the works and didn't rule out Windows either. This effectively makes the Cotton Candy the world's smallest computer. On the Android side of thing in the demo we saw. The FXI was plugged to a MacBook Air via USB port, With the Cotton Candy launch Android 2.3 in a separate window that was easy to navigate in and out of. We also so the Cotton Candy connected to a TV and the developer was able to control the device via a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse very effectively and smooth. Expect to see the FXI Cotton Candy in 2012, and the company is aiming for a sub $200 price tag.So enjoy your hands-on video below!

Very cool but I question the point of it.
If you have a phone or tab can't you just use that to plug into the TV to get your big screen android fix?
I dunno, I'm just finding it hard to serve a purpose for me, personally. And I would still need Win7 for many computing needs...

Windows vs. Android

Windows will prevail. Microsoft with their Wndows 8 getting in the race now I think after a rough start and give some time in the future will prevail and be superior over any mobil OS because Android is so stupid. Yes Android made some shaking in the mobil world but hey is still stupid, the browser is stupid, managing emails are stupid and list goes on. This is my personal opinion that in the future when dust settles and bugs are worked out if I can have windows features on my phone and my tablet is the way to go. I am not refering to current windows phone now but future refined win8 and beyond stuff that will come out, just keep eye on Microsoft and Nokia partnership for now.

Only reason microsoft was able to take apple on was cause microsoft computers were around 1/3 of the price of apple phones and had the same specs
Same specs and same price
Apple you win
But android is always on top

Your talking about refining the existing windows os(take out bugs, and add features) to beat android?
Its simple logic what you do to one you do to the other to compare, so if you "refine" windows you have to "refine" android also to compare them equally.

Its like an apple approach to things ... it may "just work" but you can't do much with it, its just there nothing to really customize, I say android is in between both (paginated, and metro) but way [more] fresher.

Op has a point.. though he comes off as an idiot. If I have the full functionality of windows 7 on a tablet, of jump on it and forget about android. I mean FULL functionality. That **** better do everything I can do on my PC. Except hardware related stuff like burning dvds obviously.

I should of mentioned that all these frustration with android started when I got my tablet wanted to do some things I was doing with my laptop. I imagine if the new windows has full functionality on a tab it will be superior to android tablet at any aspect. With android: can't play mkv files, browser crashes, can't attach certain files, can't download certain files from email, can't copy text in quoted links to be pasted in new tab for download, can't turn screen off when play video file while connectrd to hdmi monitor to save batt power causes video to stop. I can go long list here, I would think that if it was windows none of these would be there.
I don't have much of a problem with my phone I can leave with it and still have fun.
And sorry for the typos I can't use phone keyboard as I would on pc.

Are we seriously comparing a Desktop OS that was engineered towards keyboard and mouse use, to a mobile phone and (only recently) tablet OS geared towards touchscreens?
Why not? A touchscreen is just a different input, but same functionality as a mouse. Onboard keyboard vs physical keyboard no difference. I agree with OP that Windows will come to dominate the tablet world, but I believe Android will dominate the mobile world for a loooong time.
Op wins Pointless debate of the year award!

Why not??? You are comparing an OS that has been around for almost 20 years to one that has only been around for maybe a quarter of that time. 20 years of development for a mouse HID compared to 5 years of modern technology for touch input.
Hopefully jellybean gives android full functionality.
I thought it was pretty stupid to release tablet os that's the same as your phone os, just prettier.
Its always stopped me from getting one.
Now I'll jump all over an optimized windows tablet...full windows 7 (don't even need nor care for 8) that run smooth as butter...mount usbs, mount iso's on disk drives so you can play games, donload codecs to ply anything, hook a server up like nothing, download anything you want, run torrents, do 100 things all at once just cuz it can handle it (ie playing music in a little screen you set to stay ontop while behind it isa maxed firefox tab streaming a muted video from youtbe while dragging around another little screen just to pass the time as you watch this epic trailer listening to epic music)
Windows will murder android and especially ios, functionality wise.
Sales wise? Whole different ballgame bruh

Given that I can already run ubuntu on my Epic, the next Gen of Android devices should bring Android phone/tablets far closer to being desktop/laptop replacements.
Look at the Atrix. It was a first attempt, but it is moving the android platform in the direction of a laptop/desktop replacement
Given the power of the new android phones, and the rate of new development, Android should begin to compete rather well in the desktop/laptop replacement field.
I hardly ever use my laptop anymore, except if I need to convert/edit a pic/video, or burn a CD/DVD
I feel that in general use, Android is FAR better than Windows, and I say this as someone that has done IT support in a windows environment for over 25 years.
After all, very few people would put windows use anywhere near a pleasant experience.
I really think that most of the advantages a desktop has, will start to fade as the phone/tablets get more powerful., and better able to integrate with docks and BT items
For example, CD/DVD burning can be added via micro USB with an external burner, or even on built into a docking station.
KB & Mouse the same way, or via BT.
A Monitor can be done via HDMI out, or also via a docking station.
The only real advantage I see for Windows, is full support of Microsoft office, otherwise, IMO there is just no real advantage of a windows system, that isnt related far more to the desktop's hardware, instead of the desktop OS.

Lapdock HARDMOD - CottonCandy ICS FXI - NATIVE

Hello
Just wanted to let you all know that although my Atrix is no longer in use, I have the lapdock lying around.
It is a good piece of hardware and I have been toying with finding a way to embed the actual atrix itself inside the lapdock. However, the real problem there is that there is no use for doing that since the Atrix's native dock functions suck!!! I also considered and toyed with the Raspberry, but its not meant for that.
However I have come across this puppy: FXI Tech Cotton Candy
and my plan is to embed it inside my Lapdock and create something actually useful with that hardware.
The FXI Cotton Candy officially supports GB, ICS and now Ubuntu 12.
For anyone who doesn't know what it is:
"FXI Tech Cotton Candy packs more power in a tiny space. It has a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 as its processor and the quad-core ARM Mali-400MP for graphics. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. On both ends are USB 2.0 and HDMI out connectors and there’s one micro USB 2.0 connector on the side. It has 1GB RAM and a microSD slot for up to 64GB of expandable storage."
Given its size, it easily fits disassembled into the dock connector that rotates on the actual lapdock.
Does this sort of thing interest anyone?
I'll keep you guys posted as my adventures with that continue.
Sounds interesting and would love to see this kind of thing work.
Good look man hope it works for ya

Did you pre-order one?
If not, the likelyhood of you getting one this year is almost zero. They have stopped pre-orders as they have filled up on those, and currently have nobody to do mass production for them. Since this is their situation and they have to find someone to build these units, you most likely won't see any this year, as it takes time to complete all the necessary steps to put a product into production. Your best bet may be one of these to test out your idea:
http://www.mobilenapps.com/articles/2246/20120518/74-mk802-versus-200-fxi-cotton-candy.htm
If you can't get hold of one maybe look into the MK802 PC, you might find that easier to add onto the lapdock too looks like it already has a hdmi and a usb so i think you may just have to buy some extra wires and hook it all up. And it's only $74
http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/18/mk802-beats-cotton-candy-to-market/
Should work perfectly fine... people have shown that you can connect a PS3 to the lapdock. Only question is: will a regular ICS or Ubuntu 12 have the lapdock drivers..

You and Alaq have made me **** bricks. I normally figure stuff like this out early on. It's not until now that I've realized that connecting usb and hdmi ports will make the lapdock a sologig. A real upgradeable laptop, how about that?! It would be nothing to find screens of a similar size to replace them in any lapdock model if you wanted to do so. Still ****ting bricks.

I knew about it's potential ever since I saw that ps3 video (Either last year or the beginning of this year...), but it wasn't till this month that people started releasing PCs on a stick... But yea it would be amazing for school to have a razr thin laptop that runs smoothly and has 8 hour battery life (probably more because it's no longer charging the phone), and that's why I decided to start on the project (In my sig), I'll release everything when I'm through with it.. I'll have to record everything that I do to the lapdock for you guys...
This one looks really interesting.....in technical side.
But it is not efficient if you compare the price with typical windows netbook
199$ + lapdock price is more expensive than netbook.

Plus where would be the fun if you just buy it... Were gonna mod this to our desires xD
Once you get it sorted, could you make a video showing the performance? I love the idea and have been considering making a sort of 'dummy phone' like box to house a raspberry pi but this little a10 stick computer looks like it could be a better option. For me, it would have to run linux as android on a laptop is just wrong as far as I am concerned It looks good, but would not be worth it unless it is faster than webtop imho.

They look pretty sweet. Especially those air remotes. If I wasn't broke atm I'd jump in on this kickstarter deal. I travel a lot and it'd be awesome to have one of these to plug in wherever I went.
yeah that is awesome!
Well, this is nothing new. There's already the FXI CottonCandy, and a Chinese equivalent that is slight less powerful in specs. The main differences between this and the CottonCandy: it uses the exynos 4 dual processor (same one as in the GS2), and also includes a full size male USB 2.0, so a computer can also boot from it as well. That little piece of awesomeness goes for 199. This one though has that nice air remote. Wonder how much this one costs...
FYI, I fully believe that these thumb drive Androids are going to take off very soon...the market is very young, but they are so versatile.

Answer to the ques
Yh I know what you're taking about , the USB drives are trending nowadays but I hardly can figure out a reason for them with 1.0 Ghz and 512 ddr2 ram which I believe is the maximum specifacion those USB form factor can go. They’re limited to arm instruction set , which means arm software and not x86
so nothing will work instead of android , however I have heard of Ubuntu ARM port. But I believe installing Ubuntu or any other Linux on that USB will be hard to implement
and I think after you install ubuntu you can customize it to make it more like XBMC
They come in much better flavours than those posted above. I like this one:

It'd be good to have one of these little guys in case I went to someone's house for a weekend or on vacation and needed a basic PC to browse internet, etc.
Good find none-the-less.
I've been following these a lot and so far have been pretty disappointed.
There are a few different ones, the best specs-wise being the cStick.
Always Innovating HDMI dongle (only selling to vendors I believe)

Mini X Plus and/or Mk802 (my problem with this company is I was reading on their forums reports of both overheating and 512MB models being sold as 1GB).
https://www.miniand.com/products/Mini Xplus TV Box H24
Apparently the Roku streaming stick requires MHL-enabled televisions.
And the best I've seen the cStick has been delayed time and time again and so far haven't updated their status in months.

Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.
Check out this app called Jump Desktop on the Google play store, might be what you're looking for.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.
Realvnc for the win !
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.
Good luck
That app has great reviews - and is cheap too! Thank you for the suggestion! I wish I could test out this system first, haha. Oh well, I'm sure there's a return policy I can use if something won't work.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc
Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

I cosign those who said Splashtop and for a tablet, I would recommend a Transformer over the Galaxy Tab.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.
I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

May I ask why you recommend the Transformer?

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

One thing that a teacher had was a Mobi mobile interactive whiteboard. It is a thing that hooks up to your computer and is exactly what you are looking for. Also they have clickers with a program that yo ask questions and they key in the answer and you can see who is right/Wong and what answer they had. Hope I helped!
