Irritated to learn about the launch of the 10.1 version of the Galaxy Tab 2.
Can't we users and developers urge Samsung to release the official ICS update for our GT 10.1 instead of launching product after product with very little differences? I don't feel like buying Samsung products anymore.

While I somewhat agree with you I think it would be a rep shame if you stooped owning their products due to the fact they are releasing alot of great, but albeit similar, products. Besides who'd want an official release when there's cyanogen. All I want off Sammy are the damn camera drivers.
Hopefully ppl will vote with their wallets but feels like Samsung are doing an Apple

Samsung said it would release during Q1, why are people getting mad/frustrated that its not out when Q1 is not over yet? I understand if it was Q3 and still nothing!

Yes! That would make me choose cm9 rather than wait for an official update.
Will we get them with the new tabs? They could be ported to our devices then.

Might be so because ASUS seems to be doing a good job by providing regular updates. At least more than Samsung.

I dunno -- the Note 10.1 actually seems like a great idea to me! I love my 5.whatever" Note phone/tablet. That being said, I might prefer a 8.9" version (any smaller and it's no fun reading comics on it and for me 10.1 is a little largish for book-reading).
PS: Yeah, they should release an ICS update for the existing devices too.
Yeah! How dare they announce a new product! I can't believe the gall of these companies--what do they think we are? Consumers? Bah, I think that a company should be limited to releasing one product a year, and whenever they release a better product ours should be upgraded.
And you know why I'm so angry? It's because I have no idea that there's real things in the world to be angry about! I never watch the news or read a paper, or really anything other than forums and blogs! Because I pay no attention to the real world, I think that the worst thing in the world is when a multinational electronics corporation releases a new product! Don't they realize the harm they cause by designing and selling new products? Do they not see that when I buy a product, I expect that it will be the best thing available (or just announced...) for at least a decade? Oh man, I just can't understand what they're thinking. In a world like ours of total customer loyalty to brand names--In the quickly shifting category of consumer electronics--I am shocked they didn't at least send us a survey.

Ouch! I just got flamed.
I have to admit it when someone makes more sense than I do.
Thing is, there is almost no reason for them to make ICS for the original 10.1 It just costs them money to make a few of their more techie customers happy. Time and time again companies have made it clear they could care less that a few people won't buy their products because they won't update software promptly.
The 10.1.5 with ICS makes sense. They barely had to do any engineering on the hardware so it was cheap, and they need ICS to attract customers to buy it. ICS now becomes profitable for them. Companies (aside from charities) exist for one reason, profit. As long as they are making that profit, they can care less what you as a customer think of them. Luckily we have a little control in what we do or don't buy which helps make companies care, but it is all for naught if they are still raking in billions each quarter. It sucks, but at the very least we have CM9
For all I care they can release 100 new Tablets this year because I will buy the one I want and won't care about the rest..
Choice is good...

Same thing was said with the galaxy s from 2.1 to 2.2, 2.2 to 2.3, just relax and wait for it.
10.1 and 8.9 will get the ICS, why would samsung leave is first real tablet with 6/7 months old without this major update?
I just read in another post that Samsung has to support devices for 18 months per some google agreement. So we would definitely see ICS, but who knows when?
Not info from me, just what I just read in another post.
If you can read this it was sent using my GT-P7510.
I think the figure was that 1% (not those guys) are running ICS, with so little usage it will take awhile for more quality development.
And more bugs to get worked out.... The CM stolen roms will work until then.
Also I thought dude worked for Samsung now... Perhaps he can make friends in the camera.apk department... Maybe an email like hey... you know, how about a little something for the effort.
I joke, I joke.....

Yup. That was announced originally at Google I/O spring 2011. That means we would qualify for the Android 5 update when that gets announced later during Q3 or late fall.

Actually customer loyalty is very low, especially with electronics, with the exception being apple, but even then its not as high as you might think. Also it would be impossible for the product to be "the best thing available for at least a decade" ... not only is computing exponential, the rate of exponential growth is itself speeding up.
Computing power doubled every 18 months in 1950, today it doubles every 11 months. That being said they could definitely make their products more upgradable, and in a sense you can do it yourself (rooting, overclocking, new ROMs) and above all they don't care as long as they are making their share holders happy.
Someone mentioned Apple earlier and say about Samsung, that choice is good. While Samsung do make great products, including much of the iPhone, I do believe Samsung could learn a lot from Apples product strategy.
The raft of new devices, like Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 which apparently isn't the real successor, only a sideways step, is an example of the lack of clarity and focus from Samsung. Then there the Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus followed by the Galaxy Tab 2. Which one follows from the original tab? Then there's rumours of the Note 10.1?
There is way too much product overlap and seemingly little focus. And with Galaxy minis and young's and aces, even the phone market seems confusing. At least we know the S is the pinnacle and the S3 won't be an S2 with ice cream sandwich and the real successor being something like a Samsung Galaxy Young Ultimate HD 4.8.
Put it like this, you want an iphone or an I pad, you get one. Like it or not, its a strong brand.
At first I thought the whole apple fanboy rage is what caused apple to release iPad2 then iPad3 in less than a year. I used to be an iOS owner, and was pretty proud of it without falling into the apple sheep or the cult that worships the half bitten apple. I had the initial 2G for both the iPhone and the iPod only to see what I was missing out, shortly then came the release for the 3G which was quickly discarded in about 4-5 months with the launch of the 3GS and the trend followed. I used to be so ENRAGED about how I as a consumer had to keep myself constantly in the mix of what was being released and If I wanted to get it with the same idea that
"This **** will last me for about a year, I mean hey ,I used my nokia for 2-3 years"
and then BOOM, the bloody mass corporates state "I am sad to say we are cutting off all support for previous Apple devices below the 3G series" that **** move made me swap to the green little buddy whom I feel I have spent my money's worth. I mean for the love of God, Apple, It's the same interface for like 4, no, 5 generations now! NOTHING in their interface has changed, just the price and look+feel.
Just when I thought that headache was over, I moved to Samsung which had the sexiest designs out of all the smartphones in the market. Purchased my first Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 7 (Edition 1) and was proud, then development ceased for both due to developers being demanded in the latest S2 and Asus Transformer and I agreed one can't be stuck on one device permanently and so I hoped that the incoming ICS would give me some hope, then Samsung pulled another **** move and said "These following devices will not be getting ICS and Gingerbread 2.3.7 will be the last firmware" and hillariously, mines fell into that son of a gun list, and so I bought the HTC Evo 3D, same story with the development. And so I decided to play cat and mouse, grab the next "Hot item" that hit the shelves, and that was the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only to my dismay it's been less than what? 1-2months and I feel they are about to cease all support for this. Even worse? I have both the 10.1v and non V editions. **** just got real.
I am not angry, I an ENRAGED, If samsung decides to pull a Nokia stunt that releases a new bloody device EVERY SINGLE MONTH, Then fu** Samsung and the minds behind their marketing strategy. I will personally walk upto their sales rep and smash my Galaxy Tab on their faces, probably quote "NOPE SEEMS FACEUNLOCK DIDNT WORK, OH WELL"
I agree 100%..

Soon it won't be just the tablet's but they would be failing their consumers hard. When you are forced to spend over $1000 or more in less than a month for a device that doesn't last in the market for 2-3 months? Ridiculous!!

Samsung should take notes from Motorola.
The Droid 2 is breaking records in sales, mostly due to
marketing the Android 2.2 software and UI. Samsung has to hurry and get Froyo to the masses of Galaxy S owners and sell the hell out of it.
They have to keep up with the Jonses in order to sell these phones.
I think T-Mobile should step in and push this with their partners and have a huge re-launch of the phone. The vibrant is a great phone It just needs better marketing and cutting edge UI.
What do you think?
That's why it's called Samsung and T-mobile.
I'm thinking Samsung will announce something at IFA, which starts September 2nd. Their twitter keeps saying they're making a lot of big announcements. I'm hoping to get a definitive date for froyo then or at very least, the GPS fix.
Yeah I definetly agree with you. These Galaxy S phones have the hardware, but not the killer software to match it.
I was set on buying an iPhone, because I had no clue a phone like this even existed on my network.
But Samsung is by no means stupid and have been making some really indicative suggestions that we will be seeing some big changes in software in the next couple of months.
I'm more than sure that we will get Froyo, GPS fixes, and more by the end of September.
WHAT?!?!
FIRST:
the X doesn't have froyo. They have a leaked version with piss poor benchmarks.
SECOND:
the galaxy is always having a commercial on tv.
Their also selling very well.
He's referring to the "Droid 2", not the "Droid X."
I think that us techno gadget geeks here on xda certainly care about Froyo. But out of all the people I know that are in the market for a new smart phone, or actually have android phones, they don't care about froyo, or even really know what that is if you mentioned it. I think the masses care about getting on facebook and taking a picture with their phone, etc... I think the silly things like having avatar on it are a bigger selling point to the masses compared to which version of android it has on it.

Ha. Same here. People at work ask me questions about my "droid phone". My co-worker said she almost bought a droid the other day. I asked her which one and she said, "you know, the droid phone," as if there's only one. I've explained to them before what android is but it clearly doesn't sink in. I think its safe to say most people that aren't tech nerds are clueless. Even my iphone sporting friends don't know what Android is.
Pretty much they only care can about the surface stuff really. My brother in law has a news girlfriend who had a hero and didn't even know about the market on it at all. She didn't even know it was android.

Yea I will have to agree that the mainstream consumer isn't going to know what version of android they're running/if they have an android phone/care about updates. All they're going to see is the big screen and avatar on the vibrant and want to buy it. The tmobile store demos has a little sign listing the specs like 1ghz processor but a good mass of people won't have a clue what that even means.
Hopefully froyo comes in September because I decided to not go the rooting route this time and just patiently wait it out. I would be annoyed if they waited until the fascinate came out to release froyo.
Where do you see the Droid 2 is breaking sales records? Have you seen the numbers for Galaxy S phones? They expect to sell 10 MILLION over the next 12 months. That's more than iPhone 4 by itself. Samsung has got the Galaxy S on pretty much every provider in every country, I would have to call that pretty damned good marketing. The fact that a few hundred or every a few thousand people are chomping at the bit for Froyo doesn't even begin to move the needle enough for them to even care. The fact that they are moving forward and will be pushing updates and Froyo soon enough means that all the gearheads like us will be recommending the phone to everyone we know.
Missing the boat? I beg to differ, I would say they built the damned boat this year and are fully in charge of its direction.
I really don't understand how the OP says that Samsung is missing the boat with Froyo. They already announced that it will be released in the early part of Sep. A few extra weeks won't KILL YOU!

No, it won't kill us, but it will make me think about getting another Samsung.
If Samsung wants to add TouchWiz on their phones, then they should be prepared to react quickly when a new OS upgrade arrives. They've certainly had enough time before the Froyo original announcement.
The fact that they are lagging behind with what is supposed to be their flagship device, makes me nervous about how long it will take for the upgrade to OS 3.0, which will be a much more significant upgrade.

I have found the real reason that Samsung was ans is late to updating their phones to the latest or next to latest versions of Android Fryo and 2.3/2.4 Gingerbread.... Its simple Apple has Samsung as a supplier for the Iphone's A4 cpu and its Retina Display (which is probably a version of the Galaxy S screen super-AMOLED. Thus I found this..."Apple is quite annoyed by Samsung's fast rise in a market which it virtually created," James Song, an analyst at Daewoo Securities, said on Friday." This would make perfect sense since Samsung does not want to offend one of its chief customers.
Could this be the reason? Stay tuned news at 11pm, updates as they happen...
I really hate apple. Jobs should get an award for single handedly making people technically dumber. Most iphone users can barely navigate itunes let alone a pc. I don't believe they make their lcd's and its not a super amoled display on the iphone4. This is not the reason sammy is late with updates. The reason they're late is they suck at software(getting better tho) and all the individual carrier crap they have to add in or make provisions for.
FYI; samsung and apple look to be bitter rivals now.

Not true. The main reasons we live in such a smartphone driven world today is blackberry, motorola, and, honestly, windows mobile. The idea that we could have full keyboards (since texting had become so commonplace), keep an array of files with us, and music on our phones intrigued a large portion of consumers. The first true "turning point" in my opinion was when the motorola q was released. It was the first smartphone geared towards the normal consumer and not businessmen.
You have to give motorola credit. While they may suck at a lot of things, they have generally been "pioneers" in that they change consumers minds for them. The razor introduced the idea of ultra slim phones, the Q introduced a phone that's more than a phone, and the Droid made the general (unaware) public aware of the android OS. If anything, apple has been following their lead. Just with better marketing and implementation lol.

No he didn't. The only reasons apple is where they are is because of the app store and how ridiculously easy it is to use that pos. Apple didn't invent **** or bring anything new to the table. They just released an easy to use phone in a market that was flooded with ****ty winmo phones. Stop spreading that hoopla about jobs and apple "inventing". Its the reason why android is speeding by and apple wont catch up unless they finally revise ios and make it more functional... but at that point they'd be copying off android wouldn't they? There's nothing new under the sun. Its never what you do but how its done.

It's not Samsung that holds up upgrades. It is U.S. carriers. International Samsung phones get their upgrades months before ours.
Considering Apple is sueing sammy, and sammy is sueing apple, I venture to guess apple is looking to expand its suppliers.

I Hope they both get FK'ed over... honestly Apple has made people retarded.
and Sammy has continually screwed it's customers over with updates...
i Just wish there was a company that cared about its customers instead of profits... But then again that'll never happen.
There are two reasons why Samsung was so late with updates.
1. There was a huge bug in in their bloatware with Froyo that made it difficult to make a non-buggy port.
2. The carriers are the ones who send out our updates; for all we know we could have gotten it months before if it were an international carrier supporting our updates.

well read the link to the article. From a business stand point would you want to tick off one of your biggest customers? I think that apple is not the best thing on the face of the earth. They are just good at marketing to a select group of people. I do think that Apple told Samsung to slow the updates and which as a up side would give samsung money from people purchasing more phones off contract from carriers.
ok..first of all as stated..the IPS-LCD in iphone 4 is not made by samsung..its made by LG...also...Samsung does not make Evo screens either...
There is also no one to offend..Apple's strategy revolves around making big checks to companies with latest tech to make shortages for competitors..Samsung on the other hand wont have shortages as they can make their own...
Also, there has been no delay on 2.3/2.4..it came out in standard time on the international Galaxy S..just because google released Gignerbread 4 month ago did not mean it was ready for the public...if you follow trend of Nexus One and Nexus S..it seems like it takes around 4 months for it go rom developer phone to first consumer phone...
And as for Froyo delays...most of it was US carriers fault...

Apple had nothing to do with it. The screen for the iPhone 4 is made by LG, by the way. Samsung has Apple by the balls because they are their second-largest part supplier behind Sony, so no. Samsung and carriers are to blame for neglecting their customer-base. Google has now made a new clause in their manufacturer contracts that says Google has to review any UI customizations a handset maker puts over Android before they will give them early access to their source code. This means no more carrier and manufacturer drag-ass or excuses for grossly neglected software updates to customers. Google will simply make the handset maker's life hell as well as revoke their competitive edge in beating others to the market with the latest version of Android. It's a round-about way of making handset makers like Samsung fall the **** in line and stop screwing around with this "fragmentation" crap.
Reports are coming in that Apple has been granted a preliminary injunction for the entire European Union (excluding Netherlands) that will halt distribution of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. This comes on the heels of a postponed launch of the device in Australia due to a lawsuit with Apple.
The decision by the Regional Court of Dusseldorf in Germany to block sales of the device comes after a judge sided with Apple on claims that Galaxy Tab infringed on patents related to the iPad 2. While Samsung can appeal the court’s decision sometime in the next month, the Telegraph’s Shane Richmond is quick to point out it would be heard by the same judge. Apple is also said to have a separate lawsuit filed in the Netherlands as well.
Samsung had this to say in a recent statement about their legal disputes with Apple:
“Samsung believes that there is no legal basis for this assertion. We will continue to serve our customers and distributors and the sale of Samsung products will be continued.”
And Apple has made their stance on the situation clear…
“It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging. This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

Here is a great article.... http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2011/08/preliminary-injunction-granted-by.html
I fell bad for the android fans in Europe, I have to say that the galaxy tab 10 is the best android tablet out there. I have owned and used them all.
Yah, I have a GT 10.1 and and iPhone 4, and there's really not much different about any of the tablets. There all a flat sheet of glass....
Guess they'll have to make due with this instead:

That isn't such a bad thing, since the emulator runs faster than the real thing
Wow this is crazy....i don't know how the galaxy tab 10.1 is similar to ipad2?
Atleast with the phone there is some argument with touchwiz looking similar to iphone with home button. But with the tab 10.1? Seriously Apple cmon let consumers have choice to buy what they want. Eventually the better product will win, not by blocking compitetor product sales.
Maybe Apple is worried about a better product...
No difference at all
Only a different screen size, aspect ratio, OS, camera orientation, speaker design, double the RAM...
My country makes me sad!
Looks a lot like apple products... how many ways can you design a flat device be it a phone or a tab? then they say the user interface looks a lot like apple iOS when it couldnt be more different! in fact its 100 times better and thats what has got apple messing themselves.
not a peep out of apple for yrs until android, samsung and htc have come along and started to kick their ass
They should have skipped Touchwizz, it makes the tablet look like an Ipad.
Oh, all ports are an EXACT copy of Apple products.
No SD-Card, same plug + adapters, same price etc. makes it look and feel Ipad like, not Android like !
The really wanted to beat Apple and took over to much.
I guess the 10.1 is dead now. Propably they will hurry to release a Tegra3 Tab.
I am really pissed...
http://winfuture.de/news,64823.html
I ordered my GT10.1 yesterday from Germany and it shipped today (at least i hope it did).
Of all Sammy products, the GT10.1 seems the least like an apple product, in specs, hardware and software, especially compared to earlier phones.
Yet Apple is after the GT10.1 probably cause they know they've lost dominance in the cell phone market to android phones, and very much fear the same will happen in the tablet market, especially since GT10.1 is the most credible (if not better at least hardware wise) competition.
Apples is a smart innovative company, but I felt from my iPod touch days that I couldn't live with their suffocating and closed (my-way-or-no-way) approach to using their products.
Now, it seems like apple is taking their domineering ways one notch further and just trying to suffocate any competition.
I hope Apple keeps making good products but I hope they don't succeed in killing alternatives. Just leave the choice to us customers.
Well, this is unique. The EU has been quick to block, ban, stop or otherwise harrass American companies just because they're American companies. Even when there's no legal reason or precidence to do so.
Part of me wishes Apple well just for that reason. Alas, the logical part of me wishes justice be served.
Isn't it ironic that a decade ago that Microsoft was the evil empire and Apple was the underdog. Now Apple has become the evil empire and scarier than Microsoft ever was.
One thing is for sure, if Apple stops me of using a product I like, then Apple is more than a just a bad product ... This is such bad advertisement ...
I say, Samsung use this! Great opportunity.

May be you should troll somewhere else. Also, when you haven't compared 2 side by side, then don't even post anything in regards to Gtab.

its reasons like this i sold my ipad, and iphone;
bought a HTC Desire HD, and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
will never buy another apple product again.
Apple is suing HTC, too. And at this point, theyre winning. I mean, how different can a tablet be??!!! What, apple wants everyone else to make round products that only have a black 'speak-only' screen????
Wtf apple!!??? God, i HATE apple!

Time to hit the drawing boards. The gtab is dead. Well this should allow Samsung to come out with something more defined and truly a work of art.

I've been disgusted by Samsung's lack of support of this phone or any phone they've released in the US. When the galaxy S line came out in the US, I encouraged everyone to buy them because they were such good phones. Well they were good on Eclair when they came out and didn't really fix all the problems in the extremely delayed Froyo release. I still laugh to my self when I remember asking the Sprint salesman when the Epic will get Froyo and he said "by the end of September" (I bought it September 9th). For anyone that uses the "best hardware" bs excuse I don't care. I want my phone to work not to have the "best hardware". The keyboard still doesn't work properly and that's the only reason I bought this stupid phone. Anyway, I was looking at this androidcentral article about fragmentation and I noticed something interesting; Samsung has only updated ONE phone to gingerbread in the US. Just one phone on one carrier, the Droid Charge. The other Samsung phones on gingerbread are the ones that launched with it. I would never in my life buy another Samsung phone but unfortunately the Nexus Prime is made by Samsung so they'll have to get my money again. I'm definitely buying the Prime next month and either smashing this epic piece of s**t to pieces with a hammer or donating it to a developer. Probably the latter since I've been dying to have a fully functional cm7 build for months.
Sources:
http://www.androidcentral.com/dear-molly-rants-lets-talk-about-android-fragmentation
They are bad... The worst IMO. Its all because of the "UI's they put on. But if the prime comes to sprint i will be buying it. I assume the prime will NOT have touchwiz. But we will see, I at lease hope because it does not have a keyboard it should have CM7 soon.
Samsung is known for its prominent hardware manufacture ability.
If they had deep software capability, they would've not use android to sell their phones.
They're strategy is to own other handset manufacturers with superior hardware qualities like SAMOLED, curved screen, thinness, etc..
After they sell their product to customers, they just do enough support to prevent a riot.
So for the software updates, you can't expect from Samsung. It is waste of money for their view. Just make the next one with Gingerbread or ICS and sell 'em.
Want proof? Search for Omnia 2 that was sold as "iPhone killer" in Korea. It had Winmo 6.5 on it. People had to be stuck with it for two years, and by that time even Microsoft dropped Winmo and got Windows 7. If you search in youtube, you can see people video hitting the Omnia 2 with hammer.
Moral of the story? Don't expect awesome software supports from Samsung.
Get nexus.
They are definitely becoming better. The Omnia thing is a pretty bad example (Samsung didn't say the device was an iPhone killer, it had Windows Mobile on it (an OS by Microsoft which wasn't very elegant and Microsoft didn't bring updates very often, in fact 6.5 was the latest version and Microsoft killed it, what could Samsung have done about it? An update to the completely different WP7 years later was practically impossible and never promised by anyone). Plus, it is an old example, things can change totally in the smartphone world in some months. SGS1 users -especially in the US- had to wait extraordinarily long for Gingerbread but it feels like the whole thing has become better (rather subjective but also visible in terms of the SGS2).
In the end most over the average users didn't know that Gingerbread existed and didn't miss much, the Galaxy S1 was certainly no bad phone, hardware- and softwarewise. And all those Geeks who are longing for every little update and who read and post here in the forums are probably more happy if they just install another ROM.
First off Samsung makes the Nexus. 2nd off Samsung is great with updates....if you don't have a US carrier or Touchwiz. European Galaxy S phones have had Gingerbread for 6 months. Nexus gets very timely updates. To judge a company on 1 out of the thousands of products they make is being very single-minded. All the major US carriers Galaxy S line have not been updated. When we didn't get Froyo for 6 months Sprint blamed Samsung and Samsung blamed Sprint. This phone was the 1st Galaxy S to get Froyo then they took it back and T-mobile got theirs then Sprint. So obviously there are issues when dealing with Touchwiz, FCC hardware restrictions and the carriers. For all we know Sprint is holding onto the OTA because they are having equipment maintenance issues across the country an want to wait until they are fully operational. The 99% of Epic owners are oblivious to what Gingerbread even is so Sprint figures it can wait a few weeks.

All excuses, if other manufacturers like HTC and Motorola can push gingerbread updates in a timely manner then Samsung should be able to as well. I'm not judging them on one product, I'm basing my argument on every phone they released in the US. I know Samsung makes the Nexus S and the Nexus Prime... I clearly stated that in the OP. Clearly you have trouble reading and/or comprehending written statements.
What makes it even more pathetic on their part is that they've had a phone with gingerbread on it with essentially the same hardware as the other galaxy S phones for almost 10 months and still nothing. Just ****ty leaks with tons of things not working. I know the international version has had it for a while and it's been working out well for them but why such a delay with the US market? It's a huge market when it comes to mobile and they've sold millions of handsets here. They clearly could care less about what happens in the US which is why I'm always perplexed when people drool over new Samsung phones. I can't help but laugh when I hear ZOMG EXYNOS DUAL CORE, IT CAN RUN THE INTERNET! Too bad all that processing power won't save you from ****ty programming and no updates.
Okay okay no need to take things personally.
We all are dissatisfied customers.
About Samsung's omnia 2 reference, I am pointing out that Samsung only focuses on delivering phones with high specs on paper. it is quite obvious that Winmo 6.x was crap and having it on the flagship phone at the time is like shooting yourself on the foot. Indeed nobody promised upgrade from winmo 6.x, however it's their arrogance/ignorance that gets me. They are like "we can make phone with better cpu+scree+build quality, so we are better". This approach worked for them 5~10 years ago, but not anymore. At this time of age, I want real quality product that can bring quality experience. That means hardware alone can't cut it.
It's a fact that Samsung does provide quality hardware. However, they certainly are poor at anything software. In fact they don't have any quality software to show because they don't. Touchwiz is not even a standalone OS, its just a skin/theme.
So how do Samsung try to compete with phones like iPhone? Take the idea, slap better cpu/gpu on it and stamping out phones like a crazy factory, with their massive hardware manufacturing capability. How many samsung phones we have now? And how many of them actually beat iPhones?
Galaxy S2 is very close but it is safe to say that none of them are as optimized as iPhone.
I just don't like their business style of just producing phones with highest and newest technology on it but don't care about fine tuning and optimizing the whole system.
Look at Epic 4G. It had so much capability with keyboard, good front facing camera, Wimax 4G, awesome 1ghz hummingbird cpu. But in fact they are all good on paper, but in real life experience, they fail to utilized completely.
What's good if I have the keyboard if it ignores key inputs. What's good to have ffc if like apps such as Skype don't support it (now it does, but man.. after like 10 months of ownership...?). What's good with all the cpu if the OS is not optimized and I have to install custom roms/patches to get the phone to be snappy.
The point is... Samsung can't deliver iphone killer alone.
Buy nexus, because it is combination of samsung's hardware capability with Google's software capability.
A person that takes to insults clearly has nothing intelligent to say.
FYI if you read your own thread I was responding to post 3 that said don't expect awesome updates from Samsung, get Nexus. Now who can't read or comprehend?

Umm, this is America. We're on American carrier(s). We spend American money on this crap. Most of us ARE in fact American (or at least legal residents I would hope). In fact, after a few more beers I may even argue that supporting a foreign company's actions in this case is treason and punishable by being hanged.
Based on the above paragraph, I think we're well within our rights to judge Samsung on their American product support - which is basically non existent. Of the 3 Samsung phones I've ever owned, the only one worth a **** is the Captivate and that's only because it has fully working CM7. I won't waste anyone's time going into detail on my Epic gripes, and we all know (and probably furiously hate) the Moment.
But to diversify (and/or digress) just for a moment. I've had 2 Samsung DVD players that were complete crap and were returned. They were replaced with LG's that I am pretty impressed with. Also, my Samsung fridge makes me want to bash puppies every time I use the water dispenser.
OK, then why keep supporting them? Stop buying Samsung dude! I was just trying to note that there is more to it then just Samsung not updating the Galaxy S phones in the US. By all the RDFs it certainly isn't for lack of trying. Since the same thing happened on froyo, what really slows it down? Touchwiz? FCC hardware regs? They hate the US because Apple is based here? What really is the hold up? What is the real reason Europe gets it first?
Oh, I will stop supporting them. Epic 4g will be my last phone from Samsung.

We'll never know what the hold up is... For all we know they killed Jobs too.
And no, I no longer support them. Going back to your earlier point, I try not to judge them based on one product. The DVD players were crap, so they were returned. The fridge worked great for the 1st year or so before I started having problems with it (and if you think their mobile devices tech support is bad, try large appliances!). On the phones, the Moment I thought was a fluke of a bad phone, but it turned into a support nightmare. At least Sprint credited me back on that one. I thought the Epic would be a big improvement. While there was significant improvement on their part, they still suck IMHO.
In the grand scheme of things I own a HUGE amount of high tech devices. The amount of "support" I've shown Samsung with the 6 products I have bought (and 3 I've actually kept) is roughly equal to a pint of piss in the ocean. I won't write off a company based on 1 bad experience - I believe in 3 strikes and you're out and the Epic was #3.
At the end of the day, the only Samsung product I've bought and actually like is the Captivate. Ironically it's the only Samsung device I bought second hand (and behind a liquor store in a shady part of town at that).
While I'm thinking about it. I had a Philips Plasma TV which is now in pieces in my basement. About 95% of it's internals are Samsung manufactured and that thing was a steaming pile of baby ****. I now have 2 Panasonic TV's that I absolutely love.

Motorola for me. They may not have the fanciest screens but some close and quite technical friends of mine have the Droid 2, Droid X and their kids have Droid 3's. Yes, my SAMOLED's blow the Moto's screen away, but their phones have been quite reliable.
Also, I've been a fan of Motorola for a looooong time. My Nextel's took a brutal beating on a daily basis. I have no idea why my Razr's took all their abuse and survived. The radio's I installed in taxi cabs back in the early to mid 90's were not only rugged as all hell, but fairly high tech for their time in how they handled channel hopping and things. In my decade or so in cable we used TONS (literally tons) of their equipment and it always proved to be reliable. Not to mention the Motorola radio's that went to the battlefields and into space. That company knows how to build a damn fine RF device. I should have never strayed away from them.
Point taken. Funny thing was I bought a Samsung bluetooth headset. The ear hook snapped in half within 90 days and Samsung told me that is not included in the warranty and wanted to sell me a ear hook for $6. I told them to go screw themselves and would never buy another Samsung product. Then the Epic came out...LOL.

The thing that pissed me off was it sounded like it happened all the time. Got a package of 3 ear hooks for $6 from ebay instead of giving it to them for 1. But yeah, heard Plantonics makes good bluetooths.

Today is pretty much a sad day for Samsung, ICS and Android in general, in my opinion.
Androids latest version, ICS, has been released about 5 months ago. Today, the most important Android device available on the planet, has not yet seen an update to this latest version yet, and I think that is something to be ashamed of. As a pretty normal user, I don't know and don't really care how much development goes on before releasing a new version, but a company that sells 300 million handsets in a year (of which at least 20 million of this type of handset that have cost the user somewhere between 400 and 550 euro's) I expect some more dedication to deliver a finished product worthy of it's name, fame and money. Google should be very upset that their latest product stays more or less hidden from public for about 6 months in this high paced market because multi-billion multinationals choose to dedicate too few people to get the software side of things sorted out.
All the false rumours don't really add to the experience of having a top-end device. Countless piles of crap have been pushed out by various dubious sources simply because Samsung does not wish to pin itself to a date. They knew, that people would have been outraged if they had stated in october that ICS would be released on the Android phone as much as half a year later. Instead, they let the irritation smolder and only give some vague hints once or twice during the whole period.
In my opinion, smartphone use is not as much about hardware as many of the Android manufacturers and users would like to see. The race for top specs will probably look quite ridiculous a few years from now. The secret to having an amazing device has it's foundation in good hardware (not neccesarily top notch hardware though) and esthetics/design, but without proper software this foundation will still be only a foundation. Nobody likes to own the best foundation in the world when there are no walls, windows, furniture, household appliances and great looks and functionality to make the living pleasureable. Off course, Samsung does provide us with all that in some way or another, but it is lagging behind seriously, especially compared to the competing major OS'es.
Naturally, every Android user has the possibility to blast everything off the foundation and build something custom on it, being either Samsung stuff with some extra things and paint added or removed, or being prefab Cyanogenmod or MIUI or whatever, but unfortunately this argument is worth almost nothing since it is again Samsung who decides when the bits and pieces become available for custom building, and this is lagging even further behind than their own software building, much to the irritation of the developers of custom firmware.
So, to sum it up, I think this has been a praticularly bad day for all SGS2 Android smartphone lovers. And being beaten to it by some other competing manufacturer does not help!
Thanks for listening
Dude, relax. It is just a phone. An nice one, but still a phone.
waaaaaaa
You do know Samsung don't have to release an update right?
Next time get a Nexus device, any other flavoured Android build takes time for adaptation and I'll rather they did a good job than rush a half baked build.
Your rant suggests you lack a fundamental understanding of the process.

i would rather have a stable rom with a bit of delay than a buggy one (doesnt apply to cyanogen mod )
and what are you on about its been about 3 months from the release of galaxy nexus
and anyways ics is coming tomorrow
we did have beta roms from december and we could see samsung patching bugs in each successive build this is what xda is we all work together to make our devices better and better
Stop moaning, HTC have just started rolling out ICS in certain regions, what about other Android manufacturers? Where's LG, where's Motorola? Where are their ICS leaks etc etc applies to all.
Each manufacturer has their own overlay on top of ICS this takes time and testing to get it right, it's a few months late oh well at least 2.3.6 is running fine though, there's no need for Samsung to update our phones to ICS they're a business do you think they care how long we have to wait no, they'd rather make money and focus on getting ICS running on their next flagship model then current flagship.
We will get it just a matter of when, if you don't like it get a Nexus, also made by Samsung.
All these posts bashing Samsung its just all the tech blogs making things worse!
If you dont like it get an iPhone or better yet a symbian device!

I would like the OP to tell me one thing that he/she can do on ICS that they can't do on gingerbread. And make it a decent example and not something like "monitor data usage" which I agree is nice to be built in but nothing that can't be done already with an app.
The way this post has been worded with all the "house/foundation" metaphor you would think that the SGS2 doesn't work at all atm and needs ICS to make it functional, which we all know is rubbish.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
@bluefa1con ICS is not coming tomorrow, they went back on their word this morning.
anyway, you're right, and i'm a bit disappointed because Samsung have been best buddy with Google since Google Dev Day 2011, they have access to early build of their OS, they even produced 2 Nexus phones for them, there's a huge meaning behind this, but still, Samsung waited till the last moment to start working on their flagship device, first leaked build started coming out after official ics aosp release, and their work is progressing very slowly, but, like someone before me said, it's just a phone, i just love playing around with it, and i don't mind waiting till april/may for a stable rom, all i want from them are kernel sources.
I completly agree with OP-post.
My rage is simple, I mean, We're the owners of the fastest and best device in 2011 and we still didnt even had a actual DATE. The only thing, that was said: "Q1 2012". If I remember correctly, they said that Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note will have the update at Q1.
But let me tell you this, if they're still delaying date, and giving wrong info at their official(!) website, it seems that SGS2 ICS is not ready or something, that means that Galaxy Note is even out of place, probably, it will have the update somewhere at Q2 of 2012. It's totally unacceptable from such big and sucessful company as Samsung. We can't trust them, simply, they say one thing, tomorrow it will be "wrong" or something.
Samsung making great devices, and I love them, but the thing as they communicate with their customers, with their community - is just unacceptable. They won so much awards for their phone, and they, still, can't release their update to us.
Next time, i'll go to pure Google Phone.

Think about it this way a large proportion of users don't give a crap about what firmware is running on their phone as long as it works, us geeks or enthusiasts may give a crap, but my sister has got an S2, several other work colleagues have them to and none of them even know about custom roms and such let alone an update to ICS so to the mass it's not a major priority in having the latest or greatest firmware as long as they can use their phones that's what they care about.
Several work colleagues are still on the original firmware and I've told them to update but they don't care or don't have the technological ability to do so.
There is a higher percentage of normal users compared to us at XDA who make a minority.
And for those who say this will be their last Samsung device good for you, go buy a Nexus oh wait that's made by Samsung as well! I'll continue to enjoy my device running on gingerbread which works beautifully also knowing the fact it's still the best phone available currently apart from the Note which I consider a niche and better than the s2.
If you want aosp buy a Nexus otherwise deal with the fact that it takes longer to get an update. It's the way it is on Android, look at the other manufacturers as well its common. That's the problem with an open source system compared to iOS where there are a selected few devices so updates are quicker to roll out on the product lines.

Ics is not going to turn your phone into super powered alien or going to give you 10 days backup. Why can't you people just wait.

Why does Touchwiz still look the same, along those lines.... Why is it still green, etc etc.
TouchWiz 5 will be for the next flagship.

As in a contractual obligation? No indeed, I know that. But aparently (look around here on XDA) it is expected. Dissapoint customers too long, and you will be ditched for the one who doesn't.

Next time get a Nexus device, any other flavoured Android build takes time for adaptation and I'll rather they did a good job than rush a half baked build.
Your rant suggests you lack a fundamental understanding of the process.

Yeah, because getting a Nexus device will get you there quicker Most Nexus S users are still waiting on their update to ICS since updating was stopped at dec 20th.
And somewhere in my post I did mention myself that I lack fundamental understanding of the process of building firmware for handsets, thanks for repeating that to me. That doesn't mean I'm unable to compare this process to other processes and draw conclusions as a customer.
Updating on Android is slow and ceases quickly (this will probably be the last major update for the SGS2 already), so when developing stuff for Android you need to take at least 5 different versions of the OS into concideration because the market shares of the versions are very fragmented. A nuisance for developers, and also for users stuck on Froyo for example who cannot install some app because the developer chose to only build it for 2.3+ to save some time and money.
If you guys dont care that much, why you're replaying to this kind of threads?
The only thing I am talking about, is lack of communication between customer and Samsung. How the hell they can give fresh news about ICS update on their official website, and then, immidiatly, deleting it, and telling in twitter something about "wrong date". How cool is that?
They can at least say one time 100% date, but they're just keep all in secret, that's not the good way how they should treat to custumers of best device in 2011.
I'm still shocked how Galaxy Note users keep waiting for it, one leak, no news, no everything. Obviously, Sammy didnt release ICS for them in March, then, their saying about "Galaxy Note & Galaxy S2 ICS in Q1 2012" is wrong.
