Downloading Maps on Dx - Droid X General

I have a rooted Dx running gingerbread right now and am going to be going to costa Rica in the summer. I was wondering if there is a way to download all the map data to the phone for use off network because I will not have data access while there. I'd like to just be able to turn on the gps and use maps and navigation if we want to drive somewhere on our own.
It is possible that by then I will have the Raxr Maxx and am wondering if it is possible to downoad the map data will it be different for that phone?
Thanks!

How to get gps to work on official rom?

I have google maps but everytime i put track location it never finds a satellite is there a way to fix it im using the sprint official 3.35 rom and i was wondering if theres a better gps like tomtom or garmin thats free? Im new to the gps and do need bluetooth or internet or do i need to pay for power vision?

Google maps cannot determine my location

Phone is on Rogers... everything worked when on the Rogers rom. Rooted and installed RAv1.2.1H. Also tweaked Market via MarketEnabler to point at the US/T-Mobile to get paid apps.
If I have the GPS radio on Google Maps can find my location and behaves normally. If I turn off the GPS, it cannot find my location, even when I have strong 3G & GSM signals and have no problems with other data apps. This used to work under the stock Rogers ROM.
I suspect that I might have messed up some setting in the upgrade process that is confusing/interfering with Google maps using the cell tower data to get a rough location.
Any suggestions?

Recommended (free?) Sat Nav

Hi all,
Now im part of the 'gang' I was wondering what the recommended Sat Nav with voice navigation was on Android for the HTC Desire HD? I come from Nokia land where we have Ovi Maps which is very good and free.
What alternatives do I have over here on Android, ideally free, that is good and has voice navigation and good UK postcode search?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Google Maps with voice, all you need my friend
Forgot to add, ideally one where you can save maps, ie, for traveling without having to use roaming?
Thanks
Isn't a free one where maps are stored. To be honest co pilot probably the best if you want no data charges but Google map rubs rings around everything

Hi,
Yes, just tried Maps, shame about the voice!
I'd rather be able to download maps then I dont have to worry about roaming.
Do you know if you are able to, for example, set your route at the hotel/house and let it calculate the route, say on wifi, and then leave in the car and turn roaming off?
That said, i'd consider paying a small fee if I were able to access offline maps in advance.
Thanks again.

Yes you can do this with Maps but the problem is if you take a wrong turn somewhere then it can't recalculate the route for you without a data connection. Not ideal really.
If you want to do it though then simply calculate your route with wifi or 3G enabled then press your home button to continue using your phone, turn off your data connection then pull Maps back up again - it will still be running and will the just use GPS as you drive around... provided you don't take that wrong turn we spoke about earlier

Waze is much better than Google maps. No offline navigating yet, but they plan on implementing that too. And the good thing is it has crowdsourced traffic info (jams/hazards/speed cams etc), and turn by turn voice guided navigation. It's fun!

[Q] GPS & Directions in Europe

OK, I'm traveling to Europe soon... will Maps and Navigation work the same way there? When I view maps of Europe from here everything is visible, but I'm not able to test directions from here. I know there are issues with the GPS on the Vibrant, but so far (running 2.2 upgrade) I haven't noticed them... albeit I am new to the Vibrant. Thanks in advance! SFB
I just got back from a week long trip in Switzerland. I unlocked my Vibrant and used a Swisscom SIM card, and it worked great. I was able to pull up my location in maps and use it to move around the cities I was in. The only time I had trouble was if I was walking down narrow streets with little visible sky... but as soon as I got to an open square and the sky view opened up, I was fine again.
I'd say... get your Vibrant unlocked and pick up a pre-paid SIM card that includes data for the country or countries you'll be in, and have fun!
Oh, and I forgot to address the other part of your question. I also used it to look up directions to go places that included bus and/or tram/train rides, and that worked very well too. It worked well for me in Switzerland at least.
Yep, everything will work. Amazingly Google knows about Europe too.
Unlock and get a prepaid SIM at wherever you are going to avoid paying T mobile's usureous international data roaming charges.
I used Locus from the market on a recent trip to the UK. I shut off data and used only the phone's gps and the offline maps and it worked fine for directions.
Thanks for the info on Navigation and Maps in Europe. I'll be getting a TIM card in Italy, but will be getting a data plan with TIM for the first time (I will try and check out TIMs offerings online before we leave). Does the GPS function without a dataplan? My old Garmin just uses satellites... just wondering...
The GPS does function but in order to make use of it you'll need a map that you can download ahead of time.
It took mine about 5 minutes to find me initially but that was the first week of Jan. so I was still on Elcair at the time.
I have a similar question. Does google nav work same way in Mexico as it does in USA? thanks

GPS in Blade

anyone have problems using GPS?
i use Ndrive and he dont detect satelites
I'm using Sygic and the phone fix quite fast with rock solid signal. I got this phone one week ago and i'm actually quite impressed about the gps performance for the price.
ROM used: one of the latest Cm7 nightly build.
its working now, and very good..thanks

i m using google maps and it doesn't detect satelllites on 2G but on #g it does whats the problem
That is strange. I use Airtel with Edge Data Service only. And I can easily use Google Maps and Turn-by-turn Navigation (installed via the Brut hack) with GPS---in Bangalore India.
Just wanted to mention if you install the Brut Google Maps hack, you'll be able to even cache your map! So imagine you have the map stored locally on the SD card and can use GPS with it----so no need to use your data plan at all and save time and money.
