Good bye sprint - EVO 4G General

Off to verizon, stuck around when you took away my yearly upgrade, and when your 3g speeds slowed to a crawl, but you now changed my contract and expect me to pay $30 more, nope going to verizon and getting that galaxy nexus for the same price. If I'm gonna pay a lot might as well have fast data.
EVO 4G

Will mis my Evo.
EVO 4G

I hope you enjoy your venture to.

Hope you find your greener pastures! I thought about switching when they changed the billing 'format' but ran the numbers and it wouldn't have made sense. I'm gonna hold out for their NV..

Expect to pay $69.99 for voice, $20 for unlimited text and $30 for 2gb of data. $110 minimum plus tax and surcharges. No thanks, I stick to my EVO. Besides Sprint is getting the Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Note soon anyway.

I've got to be honest, I'm am a long time Sprint customer and cheerleader; 13 years and counting. I suffered through a year of the Instinct and that should prove my loyalty beyond reproach . I love my Evo and Android in general. However, Sprint seems to have become the iPhone network and as much as I am dismayed, it is painful to see all of the new and upcoming Android devices going to the competitor's. Verizon already dropped blockbuster phones last quarter. AT&T and T-Mobile made announcements at MWC. Sprint's conspicuous absence is nerve racking to say the least. It does no good to have probably the best plan out there when there are no phones to take advantage of it. The Nexus was a good start but it is the only phone on the horizon that I would even think about and it's going to be outdated by the time a release date is announced. I'm sure the billions spent on obtaining the iPhone put a crimp on what devices they could buy along with the LTE expansion. However, I am Android through and through. I was due for an upgrade in June last year but held off because my Evo was "good enough" to wait for the next "big" thing. Well, that next big thing isn't even on the horizon. Where are the announcements for those LTE handsets coming this year? Even a tease is all I want. But all I see from Sprint is NBA and Nascar endorsements. I am a patient man, but unfortunately Sprint is testing that patience to the limit. They have a couple months (until the other phones on my family plan expire) to announce something enticing or this one customer is going to add to the "churn" and bolt to another carrier; something I don't want to do but will have to to keep up with current Android tech. I hope other Android Sprint fans feel this way and put pressure on Sprint to hear our concerns, that is the only way even if it is a way, to make them know we are packing up and leaving.

Yes I am selling my awesome Evo, any takers? Rooted running classic, has 3500 battery.
EVO 4G

$89 for 2 lines including txt, double data so $50 for 10 gigs for me $30 for 4 gigs for the wife, minus my 15% discount, paying about the same. Went through amazon so no activation fee, and the phones were only $100 each.

My contract is up in a year and I've been wondering what's my next phone. Hopefully they drum something up by then.

Which carrier is best?
Is a cyclically answered question...
Whichever carrier just released the newest most powerful phone has the best device...
Whichever carrier most recently upgrades their network has the best network...
when SprintVisionNetwork fires up,
Sprint will again have the best network...
And yet still have the best pricing...
Jump now if you need the faster speed for the more money,
That's cool if it works for you...
If my service does not service my needs,
I would change service...
We'll see you back again when SprintVisionNetwork rotates Sprint back to the top...

I plan on staying with sprint for the long haul, cuz I'm sure sometime in the future they too will cap their data, and they will honor my unlimited plan!

It won't apply to existing lines that already have a smartphone on them, but if you ever want to upgrade that BB (or even swap it out with an old smartphone sitting in your drawer) then you will get hit with the fee.

Couldn't one argue that the Epic was sold under the promise that it would receive Froyo 2.2 soon after release? Couldn't that be considered false advertisement and grounds for contract termination without penalty?

Of course you could argue that, but good luck winning that argument. It's a good thing they're still the cheapest around for what they offer.
bah, that article doesnt know anything about Sprint. SERO on the EPIC or EVO is till only $50/month for 500 minutes land line, everything else unlimited. No idea why that articles claims the minium smart phone price tag is now $79 at sprint.
Almost none of their customers are paying that.. heres some options:
1) Sero $50/month
2) hundreds of company discounts, ranging from 10% to 20% = $50-$65/month
3) family plans, per phone price ends up $25 to $60/month
4) EERP $70 + sign up with VP marketing discount, -$10 which is available to the public = $60/month
5) Virgin mobile, owned by sprint, 300 anytime to land line, unlimited everything else $25/month)
6) Boost mobile, owned by sprint (averaging $40 to $60/month)
In summary, Sprints average smart phone user is not paying anywhere close to $79/month, probably closer to $60 and that's for the highest end devices.

The problem with that is that the word soon is very subjective. What we consider to be soon may be different than what Sprint/Sammy considers to be soon.

Only if you activate or buy a new phone with sprint outside of the contract you already signed will you have to pay the $10 fee on top of the regular charge for true Unlimited Data. So if you have 5 phones which are all smart phones and 4 of them are Intercepts, and 1 is a Epic, you will not have to pay the extra $10x4 a month, cause you have already signed a contract stating your conditions. If you are already paying the fee, then nothing will change.

Yeah... no. Hell I don't even think the phone has ever actually been advertised as "2.2 Coming Soon!" Remember, "the guy at the Sprint store told me that 2.2 would be out in a week!" doesn't count as advertisement and is, in no way, shape, or form legally binding. They could probably never get 2.2 out the door and not have breached any agreements.
My favorite things about this change?
1) Those morons who decided to go after Sprint for that "unjust, completely hidden charge that they never agreed to" that was clearly explained to them 100 times and clearly outlined in the contract that they signed for the phone they could have not chosen might as well just forfeit that little case of theirs.
2) Since we already pay the $10 fee, this in no way affects us.
3) Now I get to watch a bunch of idiots run around saying "WTF? People other than us are getting charged an extra 10 dollars? I'm going to Verizon to pay $20 more a month just to show those evil-doers! To hell with the fact that this in no way affects me!"
just something else for people to ***** about. Sprint is the best bet for techies b/c you have unlimited data. not 2gb cap or whatever else those other companies are offering. Hell im sure everyone has seen tmobile uk now has a 500mb cap...thats super gimp

Why does att have more subscriber then sprint?

I need to know...I don't understand. Att seems to be screwing their subscriber constantly and yet they keep adding subscriber. During this recession, how can anybody afford their limited plan costing over 100 dollars? While sprint sero premium only cost me 59 bucks with unlimited everything. Sprint is the only one where my bills actually stays around 60 a month. Attt and verizon bill varies from mnth to mnth. Isn't this common sense to pick sprint?

Sprint SERO is the main reason why I am still with Sprint - but do note that SERO was not publicly available to customers - and there is no way for a new customer to get it today. So, for a new customer picking a service, the regular sprint rates are applicable.
If you are picking a new plan, T-mo plan might be better than sprint. ATT is kinda comparable. Some customers may get a discount at ATT thru' their employer... so that might contribute to their decision too...

Main reasons:
1) iPhone exclusivity for so long.
2) They used to be decent.
3) Sprint's service sucks in some parts of the country.
4) Corporate contracts (Example: While AT&T sucks here in Sacramento as soon as you get out of the city limits, at my work, they have a contract with AT&T, so everyone gets an AT&T phone. Except me of course.)
Corporate contracts make up a much higher percentage of phone contracts than you'd expect.
You guys are forgetting a huge part.. When them and Cingular joined.
The iphone it's the only reason. But now it looks like verizon is going to be taking over the world.

...kind of how a newer and better Android phone is announced every month instead of every year?
Pretty much. As a later adopter, these things don't bother me. Whatever device i'm upgrading to has usually been out for a good 6+ months by the time I get it. At that point most of the bugs are worked out, price is cheaper, better development support, etc. It's no wonder sprint releases their latest and greatest at the start of summer, but best prices are to be had near the year end holidays.
Btw, thanks for quoting the whole thing
EVO vs iPhone
screen: iphone wins
camera: iphone wins
battery life: iphone wins
factory sd card size and speed: iphone wins
apps: iphone wins - more apps and better looking apps
operating system: iphone wins, super smooth and polished
hardware acceleration: iphone wins (oh wait, android doesn't even have any...)
audio quality: iphone wins
build quality: iphone wins
flash: EVO wins, even though it plays choppy most of the times
4G: EVO wins, even though without investing another $60 in an extended battery, your stock battery will die in a few hours with 4G on
Rooting: EVO wins, even though 80% of the people on this planet dont need to root in order to void their factory warranty and flash useless roms that offer mostly nothing over the stock rom
I'm an EVO fanboy, I'm ignorant and I approve this message!

My extended battery(3500 ma) was $10 with back piece, honestly its not that much better than the regular battery.... where I was getting 30ish hours or so? stock battery dropped 7% listening to pandora over BT while at the gym for over an hour, that's not bad.
Rooting does have its advantages, wireless tether for free is a $30/mth advantage, not to mention SIP calling which is available in GB. They're plenty of reasons.
If I want someone to tell me how to told my damn phone I'll get an iphone and move to Egypt or something. I like being able to hold my phone how I want and use my phone how I want.
Only downside I have really noticed is since rooting my camera is kinda shabby.
The iphone is the main reason why at&t has as many subscribers as they do, it'll be interesting to see where they are in a year or so when Verizon has alot of their current users.
At the end of the day AT&T still has better service in a lot of places. And service in some places that Sprint doesnt have any altogether. If you look at Sprints national coverage map its actually pretty limited in suburban places. I know in GA if you travel down 85 South about an hour south of Atlanta, if you leave the interstate Sprint literally has no coverage at all. I was kind of amazed that when I went down there I actually had to roam to get service. Then it made sense as to why Verizon and AT&T had stores everywhere but there wasnt a Sprint store in sight.
unlimited roaming ftw, I'm a trucker and I can honestly say that sprints coverage is adequate, when I get to a bad coverage area there is always verizon. in my travels I have found very few places with no coverage
In my area, AT&T is the best coverage you can get and Sprint is the worst. But on a nation-wide level, it has more to do with the iPhone.

Hahahah at all those people gracefully praising t mobiles new plan

It's a reason that this merger HAS to be denied.
4 -1 =/= MORE choices.
What is the point of being excited about people not having choices?
Maybe some people are either so narrow-minded or have such little in their lives that they get excited about stuff like this?
I for one was excited as lower prices from one carrier might push another into lower prices but hey let's keep prices higher and get excited about stupid stuff like things NOT benefiting the customer
Im not getting excited im further more showing why people should stay with sprint and keep it strong before going to companies that do things like this

Tmobile just got rid of the Even More PLUS plan, which is the $59 plan with no contract and no phone subsidy. The $79 unlimited plan with a 2 year contract is still available.
I like Sprint, but Tmobile(who I was with for 8 years before getting my Evo) has good data speed in reception in my area. Their customer service is probably the best too.
I like my Sprint plan, but I'd also like to have more options in the future especially now that my annual upgrade ironically got downgraded.

I understand what you're saying and I agree that choices are good but T-Mobile is really no better than att nor Verizon.
The only difference is they have Sprint prices.
Sprint's the ONLY carrier that offers a way to get yearly upgrade....does it suck they changed the way to get it? Yes, I was subject to that change and it sucks. But at least its an option!
As far as the speeds, yeah that's great in the few areas that its a good signal...but after 2gb of usage you get edge speeds...
On a bad month I use 4g of data and that's just normal usage...not downloading anything special.
Basically the people that get their rocks off over stuff like this are the ones that need to feel justified to stay with Sprint.

No, that's throttling. I said it before, and honestly say this seriously, but I get edge/1x like speeds on Sprint. A lot of people on Sprint are. So to get 2GB on HSPA+ and the rest on edge is not a bad deal for some. I'm a heavy data user too but I'm on WiFi 75% of time (office at work + home), so either way, I don't use over 2GB on the network anyway. There's a couple of use cases where this deal is better, and don't forget that this has unlimited calling. That's be great for a business line like how I kind of use my Sprint line.

AT&T is just as bad. Their data prices are only $5 less and so far don't include LTE.

Not thatI support Verizon on this but I thought At&t already went to a tiered plan too. If you don't stay with verizon, your only choice left is really Sprint ...and that isn't much of a choice in my book. T-mobile is good in terms of customer service and pricing but their coverage is the weakest out of the bunch.
I figured that was coming ever since AT%T announced and implemented theirs. Sprint will probably be next. And didn’t Verizon said they will not convert to a tier data plan before?
My understanding is-if you already have unlimited data, you get to keep it..and there has to be a way to swindle your way into keeping it when you go to renew...they'd be stupid to lose a customer looking to upgrade to a new phone who's been on unlimited data.
I know in 2012 (my renewal update) I'll def give them hell if I try to upgrade to 4g and they say I lose my unlimited-I'll keep my fascinate just out of spite then because frankly this phone kicks major butt anyways

The problem is the way they tie phones to plans. So even if you buy a new phone straight up they might make it be "incompatible" with your current plan.

I'm assuming they will implement it in their system. So when people upgrade or renew their plan they will be forced into the new system with the excuse that they cant do anything since the computer will default you into the plan.

then you dont renew your plan and just buy the phone outright... it would be worth it imo to keep unlimited data!

It's still ****ty for new customers, but any one on Verizon now or before the 7th is fine. How long are we all fine....well, we will see. But I would imagine it would be for at least a couple to a few years.

existing customers are fine until their contract ends and they want to upgrade to the latest phone. Then they lose their unlimted data unless you buy phone from someone or ebay and no change to contract is done.
I am off contract with the fascinate and loving it. I traded a guy my incredible with 2.3 and he thought he was getting the better deal. I am thinking of upgrading before july 7 to the charge so I can get unlimited 4g. Please convince me not too, b/c I really dont have 300 bones to dish out.

I would believe this but.....every phone I activate at work clearly defines it as 3G or 4G in the system, 4G is always accompanied by a RTR code, which I assume is retroactive. and any brochure you look at will say 3g smartphone data, or smartphone and has no mention of 4G. Verizon has cleverly drawn the line.....soooo yes you may keep your 3g phone on unlimited but dont count on getting it with 4g, unless you get it before july 7th... just my two cents, based on experience

EXACTLY!!!! case in point, try sticking a smartphone on the Nationwide Connect family share plan....NWC was a plan that bundled unlim text, mobile web(not full data) and whatever voice plan.....smartphones are not compatible with these plans and must be changed
Just make sure you keep your existing plan. Im still sporting an Alltel plan, at least 4 years old, and three phones ago.

Perhaps I am being over critical but so what if we keep our current pricing, it's the data that is changing. It does not say your data will not be tiered at 2gb for the same price.

To any one wanting the S3 on verizon read this.( Unlimited data ending)

They are going to KILL YOUR unlimited data like this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/verizon-cfo-says-grandfathered-unlimited-plans-on-the-way-out/
I think If I get this phone now it will be unlocked on AT&T.
Just wanted to give the 2 gig news.
Did I miss something or does that article not mention Galaxy SIII on Verizon whatsoever..?

I must not be reading the same article. This linked article doesn't mention GS3 ANYWHERE. ..its about unlimited data, data share, grandfathered customers and LTE.
I read it twice and it still doesn't mention the Galaxy SIII

Its right there, between the lines. Can't you see it! Geez!
This is for any one waiting for the S3 to come to verizon, but likely would not want to lose there unlimited. Just giving a head's up to them. I know most here are on AT&T like I am, but I wanted to give verizon user's a head's up so they can do what ever fit's there needs best.
Now I don't think verizon will get this phone, but some do and this is for them.

Haha.. dude, I'm not reading it again. It mentions 3G but no S3. Sorry. And its not even about the device its about the data plan and grandfathered 3G users being forced into a "shared" data plan with new LTE phones.
Did you read the article?
*edit* maybe I misunderstood the title of this thread. My bad.. you made it sound like it was article about Verizon getting the gs3, then after I read it it turned out to be an just article about data usage and grandfathered customers. Maybe the thread title could use a different title but meh.. that's just me.
Lol.. nice title edit!

Yeah, it's about the plans. You can't upgrade and keep the unlimited data but you can buy the phone full price and keep your grandfathered plan.

So are you saying that it is not worth trying to hold out for either the Razr HD or the SGS3 on Verizon in the event that you are sacrificing one last subsidized phone purchase for the next two years? I'm at a stand still here, because as long as I'm still able to retain my unlimited I wanna see if something comes out before the new plans come into place and I won't be able to keep it without paying full retail for one (course I'm gonna keep doing that as long as I can maintain my unlimited, And when they MAKE me change I will leave them immediately and never look back). However! I actually have a line on my account right now that still has a $100 2year loyalty discount attached. This is why it would be awesome to be able to hold off as long as I can to see if i could snag a Razr HD or SGS3 with that discount before I wont be able to use it.
Obviously my two main choices are the RAZR maxx and the Galaxy Nexus. I absolutely hate that the razr max has that weird resolution tho and no removable battery so I'm much more inclined to the Galaxy. What are your guys thoughts on this? My brother has the galaxy and i love its size and plenty of awesome roms to choose from which completely negate its typical bad ratings in battery life. This is coming from the HTC droid incredible and I was able to get a max of 36 hours on CM7 with incredikernal... mind you it has a weenie 1300mah battery... So I'm excited to finally get a 4g phone seeing the speeds it can produce!
On top of that im so sick of seeing people saying that it is impossible to use over 2g of data in a month with regular usage. I tested out this month on my 3g incredible using it as lil as I possibly could and still have gotten right about 3.2gb after only 18 days. This is with hardly any youtube at all approximately 18mb worth so far, and absolutely no wifi (if im paying for a service.. aka unlimited data, why bother using my wifi which can be throttled by my cable company as well for overuse.) With my family we currently use between 6-10gb per DAY.. of data on our home internet! So how are you possibly going to tell me 2gb is sufficient for phone data. Anyone who says that doesnt use their phone for anything it is capable of doing.. which makes me wonder... why have a SMARTPHONE when you dont use any of its features?
Verizon has been pushing it uses of several different apps and to be used on its network now.. and with phones having hd screens and 4g capability the usage is only going to continue to grow more and more. I could see myself easily capping over 10gb per month with a 4g enabled phone. seeing as how my average currently over the span of my 3g phone is sitting somewhere close to 5gb.
It is simply easy to rack up this kind of data use with it being usable pretty much anywhere and with the mobile hotspot feature being very useful on trips. So let me ask you.. how much do you think I'm going to want to use, and will use, when my speeds increase to 10mb/s+ from my current 3mb/s at the best it can get. I don't feel sorry for Verizon in the least, they have the infrastructure to handle a lot more then you think. I guarantee they have been showing profit gains every Q for the past 3 years with the huge expansion of smartphone growth.. they don't need to nickel and dime the hell out of us to give us unlimited data at a reasonable price. They simply choose to because the market is too stupid and will flock to them simply because they offer the best service. I pay them enough as it is for their "premium service" therefore they should offer me a "premium service" not an inferior one.
Nothing?
Verizon sucks...they will get the gs3 very late may be during holidays when the next nexus and other new round of high end devices release. Buy an international version and be on a GSM network and be happy
Edit: I have nothing aganist Verizon but in general all carries suck with their monopoly and control over phone manufactures.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Well I think they suck too for this and for them kicking and screeming trying to get out of replacing a BAD phone. I had too call them 10+ times just to get them to send me a "new" one and then the POS still did not work right intill they pushed an update. Even now it still loses 4G, but at lest I don't get 600kbs any more from 4G. There 3G= sprint and it sucks. H+ is not allways the best, but over all better for every thing - 1080p/720p video. ( Verizon's LTE falling back to 3G loading a web page laying on a table or upload hang and so on.)
I have both AT&T and Verizon unlimited data plan's and I would take AT&T any day of the week for data. voice, ok verizon you win becuase I can still make a call in the sticks if your pre-loaded app's did not kill the battery runing in the back or lock the screen up.
Verizon I hope you eat some cow, becuase the one line I have with you will be killed and odds are I will never come back.
I too think all carries suck with there price fixing and control, but verizon took 1st place on my most dis liked co list. (That I have had to deal with that is. Acer was #1, but at lest geting them to fix there crap DID NOT TAKE 10+ CALLS.)
yeah.. my plan has been without unlimited data plan because they got rid of the plan for whoever tries to add the data plan. I think they are discontinuing it even for the existing customers. Already expected that
They can have my unlimited data when they pry it from my cold, contract ending hands. I just blew my upgrade on a Nexus two weeks ago, coming from a Thunderbolt. Planning on ordering the S3 with an upgrade from another line. Once they start forcing people onto shared plans, I'll do whatever it takes to keep what I have. I use around 40 gigs a month lol
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I was going to do the same, but they have really limited LTE this month. the best speed I can get is 10mbs and that's at 1am! If your on the "list" and now I am on the list for using 4GB, I can only get .5mbs down load. yea for me

Very strange. I used 46 gigs last month and between 30-80 GB/month CONSISTENTLY since LTE came to my area around this time last year. No throttling, no warning, nothing. I get between 11 Mbps and 24 Mbps down depending on where I am and the time of day.

Only applies if you're updating from G3 phones!

This has probably been pointed out, but it ONLY applies if you're updating from a non-G4/LTE phone! I updated mine, the new one (which VerizonWireless now says "they made a mistake" and it won't be delivered for a month" - after collection several billion dollars to float for a month having originally stated it would ship on Wednesday for Thursday delivery ) still has unlimited data. I came "up" from a Moto Bionic, so I already had an unlimited G4/LTE data plan grandfathered from my Droid Incredible G3 plan when they still let you upgrade to G4 from G3 and keep unlimited data.
BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU HAD UNLIMITED DATA ON AN LTE PHONE, YOU STILL WILL HAVE UNLIMITED DATA!
^^I agree and I do not think that the "grandfather killer" has come into effect yet.
