You mean that one that selling the Epic will more than pay for?
Will this apply to my girls BB with sprint? or is only for new activations?

It won't apply to existing lines that already have a smartphone on them, but if you ever want to upgrade that BB (or even swap it out with an old smartphone sitting in your drawer) then you will get hit with the fee.

Its funny nobody realizes even with the $10 fee, sprint is still the cheapest nationwide service provider... Bang for buck... God forbid they actually try and stay in business

For those who oddly enough still want to cancel their Sprint contracts, as with any carrier, term changes == ETF free cancellation. Enjoy people! I'll stick with Sprint...they still are the cheapest, they just suck with phone options.

Couldn't one argue that the Epic was sold under the promise that it would receive Froyo 2.2 soon after release? Couldn't that be considered false advertisement and grounds for contract termination without penalty?

Of course you could argue that, but good luck winning that argument. It's a good thing they're still the cheapest around for what they offer.
bah, that article doesnt know anything about Sprint. SERO on the EPIC or EVO is till only $50/month for 500 minutes land line, everything else unlimited. No idea why that articles claims the minium smart phone price tag is now $79 at sprint.
Almost none of their customers are paying that.. heres some options:
1) Sero $50/month
2) hundreds of company discounts, ranging from 10% to 20% = $50-$65/month
3) family plans, per phone price ends up $25 to $60/month
4) EERP $70 + sign up with VP marketing discount, -$10 which is available to the public = $60/month
5) Virgin mobile, owned by sprint, 300 anytime to land line, unlimited everything else $25/month)
6) Boost mobile, owned by sprint (averaging $40 to $60/month)
In summary, Sprints average smart phone user is not paying anywhere close to $79/month, probably closer to $60 and that's for the highest end devices.

The problem with that is that the word soon is very subjective. What we consider to be soon may be different than what Sprint/Sammy considers to be soon.

Only if you activate or buy a new phone with sprint outside of the contract you already signed will you have to pay the $10 fee on top of the regular charge for true Unlimited Data. So if you have 5 phones which are all smart phones and 4 of them are Intercepts, and 1 is a Epic, you will not have to pay the extra $10x4 a month, cause you have already signed a contract stating your conditions. If you are already paying the fee, then nothing will change.

Yeah... no. Hell I don't even think the phone has ever actually been advertised as "2.2 Coming Soon!" Remember, "the guy at the Sprint store told me that 2.2 would be out in a week!" doesn't count as advertisement and is, in no way, shape, or form legally binding. They could probably never get 2.2 out the door and not have breached any agreements.
My favorite things about this change?
1) Those morons who decided to go after Sprint for that "unjust, completely hidden charge that they never agreed to" that was clearly explained to them 100 times and clearly outlined in the contract that they signed for the phone they could have not chosen might as well just forfeit that little case of theirs.
2) Since we already pay the $10 fee, this in no way affects us.
3) Now I get to watch a bunch of idiots run around saying "WTF? People other than us are getting charged an extra 10 dollars? I'm going to Verizon to pay $20 more a month just to show those evil-doers! To hell with the fact that this in no way affects me!"
just something else for people to ***** about. Sprint is the best bet for techies b/c you have unlimited data. not 2gb cap or whatever else those other companies are offering. Hell im sure everyone has seen tmobile uk now has a 500mb cap...thats super gimp
Related
I just posted this in another thread, but I feel having its own thread is necessary.
Pasted from my post:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK so inspired by this thread, I log into sprint.com to see what they officially say the $10 charge is. I think if we stick together, we can have them by the balls on this one.
"Premium Data:
- A wicked fast processor to make your apps run smoother and faster on our Sprint -3G and 4G network
- Top quality media experience with oversized screen, high resolution video and HD recording
- High-quality pics to snap and share with friends and family"
If you see this as I see this, Sprint is charging us $10/mo for the phone itself - not the service. We already paid for the damn phone! HTC is maker of the phone and sold it to us through Sprint. Both companies made money from the purchase of the phone.
Now Sprint is getting another $10/month from us because another company, HTC made an awesome phone.
I am no lawyer, but I have a feeling this contract just wont hold.
It is like buying buying an awesome sound system for your car with satellite radio built in, and having Sirius charge you $10 extra each month because the stereo plays Blue Ray, has Bluetooth, and gets rid of your blue balls.
We bought our phones for $199. And that is part of the contract. Charging us an additional $10 per month for the phone itself voids that contract. So, they try to say that they are providing the experience to us each month.
The agreed upon cost of the phone is a fixed one: $199. They are really charging you a mixed cost of $199 + $10x (where x = the number of months)
And in fact, they are lying by trying to tell us they are giving us this experience, when in fact the screen CAN NOT become less than 4.3" if we do not pay; the processor CAN NOT slow down if we do not pay; and the camera CAN NOT be less than 8 MP if we don't pay.
Who the heck is with me?!
all very valid points but im sure a bunch of people are going to come on and say dont be cheap or that its only 10 dollars a month or some other B.S.
I sent sprint a few emails 2 months ago saying exactly the same thing and mentioned how the nexus one and hd2, which both have good cameras and 1ghz processors, dont get cool feature charges, but they replied with a bs email as usual.
I don't recall the Nexus or HD2 having 4g, free 3g mobile hotspot, or having QIK, and they cost more than the Evo to buy flat out
It sucks paying for it considering I still only get 1x where I live >.>.
Like literally 2-3 miles down the road, 3G kicks in. And in the other direction, about ~12 miles down the highway, 3G comes in.
Just finish the coverage already!!!!

Yes it sure is, face it you were told about the $10 charge before you got the Evo and made the informed decision to purchase it anyway, then you had 30 days to change your mind. You didn't so shut up about it
I don't like the $10 additional charge anymore than you guys, but I (just like everyone who owns an Evo) decided I was willing to pay it to have one of the best phones currently available and because I (again like everyone else) made this decision I (and all of you) gave up my right to ***** and moan about it.

Do you know what morals are? Perhaps you meant the principal, but even then you would be wrong Sprint offered a spectacular device, with an additional monthly fee that was made VERY apparent before you purchased the phone and you chose to anyway.
Seriously if you don't want to pay the fee then don't get an Evo (or Epic or any other 4g phone) otherwise shut up.

Exactly! If you don't like Sprint's policy with the Evo then go somewhere else.
What about the unlimited data that comes along with the "extra" $10? I would not want to give that up For a tiered program....would you! That's my 2cents worth...
Despite what anyone says about it, their reasons for it are bull****. It being a premium device doesn't merit the $10 charge in addition to the data package, as there are other "premium" devices.
If they needed to charge more for it to recoup costs, fine. But don't ****ing lie to the actual intelligent consumer. That's not cool.

That's not the point. Many people have chosen Sprint because of it being cheaper than the competition despite the "premium" bull**** charge.
The point is that they're flat out lying to the consumer not oblivious to the technology world (which I will admit is the minority, but that is no excuse).

Then feel free to use the "loophole" due to them changing your contract to leave Sprint like Aridon said "There is plenty of competition in the wireless market."
So I'm pretty sure Sprint owed me a $100 rebate...I bought my Evo for $300 plus tax ($45), and Sprint granted me a $70 renewal credit for reupping my previous SERO line for another 2 years (afterwards I switched plans when I bought the Evo).
So I get my rebate check in the mail today, and instead of the $100 my check was for $250!
I remember reading that Sprint has done this before, sent people $250 instead of the $100, but I sure as hell am not complaining. My net payment for the phone is $25!
Dang, my rebate came today also, but it was only $100.
bought my phone the day of the release but barely sent me rebate in last week.. damn i should have just took care of it that same day.. guess ill continue to wait
OP, when did you send in your rebate papers?
I got my phone the 30th of June, I think I sent my rebate in around a week or so later.
So you're going to notify them that they overpaid or at least find out what happened, right? Or are you just going to stick it to them because they're a big corporation?

So you are thief. Good to know. It doesn't matter if it was your Mom or Sprint. Wrong is wrong.
I have no qualms taking the money. The alternative? Talking to customer service for hours, potentially waiting weeks for another rebate...
This is not the first I've heard of sprint doing this, even my friend received two rebates for the same submission before. Either they're not paid enough to do their jobs right, or they're downright incompetent. To be honest, sprints random incompetence in this case and their ability to still provide great service despite this keeps me as a customer, believer it or not.
When I first signed up for sprint I was supposed to get $100 in referrals...i didn't get them but enjoyed my service from sprint anyways...and still referred people.
The mistake is not my fault, I don't know anyone who would take the headache if trying to correct it over cashing the check
Last year when I was working for sprint I upgraded my phone to the blackberry tour and sent in my rebate. I paid 300 for the device and renewed my contract. I got my rebate a month later and it was for 300 dollars. I got my phone for free and my coworker who did the same upgrade got his rebate for 100.
I checked with someone at sprint since I worked there and they told me to keep it. So right now I'm waiting for my next rebate right now and I am interested to see if I get another cool MIR. The last one helped me buy my laptop and if the do it again the next one will help me pay for my wedding.

Ha, it's actually funny you call me a thief for this.
I called Sprint yesterday to report a gameloft game that was mistakenly charged to my account 6 times, instead of once. The charge looked like a single $29.94 charge and I told them $4.99 of it was legit but they took the whole $30 off anyways.. Then they offered me a $70 rebate to reset my contract to begin yesterday, and I was VERY clear about maintaining my Dec first upgrade
THEN they ship a free airrave for a line on my account thats used in a rural area, and waive the mir for it AND removed the spending limit on my account..
Despite all that: Yes, I would let Sprint mistakenly send me money and keep it, especially when (as nhutpham mentioned) the alternative is likely spending another hour or two of my life on the phone with Sprint's courteous but incompetent CS.

It's a reason that this merger HAS to be denied.
4 -1 =/= MORE choices.
What is the point of being excited about people not having choices?
Maybe some people are either so narrow-minded or have such little in their lives that they get excited about stuff like this?
I for one was excited as lower prices from one carrier might push another into lower prices but hey let's keep prices higher and get excited about stupid stuff like things NOT benefiting the customer
Im not getting excited im further more showing why people should stay with sprint and keep it strong before going to companies that do things like this

Tmobile just got rid of the Even More PLUS plan, which is the $59 plan with no contract and no phone subsidy. The $79 unlimited plan with a 2 year contract is still available.
I like Sprint, but Tmobile(who I was with for 8 years before getting my Evo) has good data speed in reception in my area. Their customer service is probably the best too.
I like my Sprint plan, but I'd also like to have more options in the future especially now that my annual upgrade ironically got downgraded.

I understand what you're saying and I agree that choices are good but T-Mobile is really no better than att nor Verizon.
The only difference is they have Sprint prices.
Sprint's the ONLY carrier that offers a way to get yearly upgrade....does it suck they changed the way to get it? Yes, I was subject to that change and it sucks. But at least its an option!
As far as the speeds, yeah that's great in the few areas that its a good signal...but after 2gb of usage you get edge speeds...
On a bad month I use 4g of data and that's just normal usage...not downloading anything special.
Basically the people that get their rocks off over stuff like this are the ones that need to feel justified to stay with Sprint.

No, that's throttling. I said it before, and honestly say this seriously, but I get edge/1x like speeds on Sprint. A lot of people on Sprint are. So to get 2GB on HSPA+ and the rest on edge is not a bad deal for some. I'm a heavy data user too but I'm on WiFi 75% of time (office at work + home), so either way, I don't use over 2GB on the network anyway. There's a couple of use cases where this deal is better, and don't forget that this has unlimited calling. That's be great for a business line like how I kind of use my Sprint line.

Not thatI support Verizon on this but I thought At&t already went to a tiered plan too. If you don't stay with verizon, your only choice left is really Sprint ...and that isn't much of a choice in my book. T-mobile is good in terms of customer service and pricing but their coverage is the weakest out of the bunch.
I figured that was coming ever since AT%T announced and implemented theirs. Sprint will probably be next. And didn’t Verizon said they will not convert to a tier data plan before?
My understanding is-if you already have unlimited data, you get to keep it..and there has to be a way to swindle your way into keeping it when you go to renew...they'd be stupid to lose a customer looking to upgrade to a new phone who's been on unlimited data.
I know in 2012 (my renewal update) I'll def give them hell if I try to upgrade to 4g and they say I lose my unlimited-I'll keep my fascinate just out of spite then because frankly this phone kicks major butt anyways

The problem is the way they tie phones to plans. So even if you buy a new phone straight up they might make it be "incompatible" with your current plan.

I'm assuming they will implement it in their system. So when people upgrade or renew their plan they will be forced into the new system with the excuse that they cant do anything since the computer will default you into the plan.

then you dont renew your plan and just buy the phone outright... it would be worth it imo to keep unlimited data!

It's still ****ty for new customers, but any one on Verizon now or before the 7th is fine. How long are we all fine....well, we will see. But I would imagine it would be for at least a couple to a few years.

existing customers are fine until their contract ends and they want to upgrade to the latest phone. Then they lose their unlimted data unless you buy phone from someone or ebay and no change to contract is done.
I am off contract with the fascinate and loving it. I traded a guy my incredible with 2.3 and he thought he was getting the better deal. I am thinking of upgrading before july 7 to the charge so I can get unlimited 4g. Please convince me not too, b/c I really dont have 300 bones to dish out.

I would believe this but.....every phone I activate at work clearly defines it as 3G or 4G in the system, 4G is always accompanied by a RTR code, which I assume is retroactive. and any brochure you look at will say 3g smartphone data, or smartphone and has no mention of 4G. Verizon has cleverly drawn the line.....soooo yes you may keep your 3g phone on unlimited but dont count on getting it with 4g, unless you get it before july 7th... just my two cents, based on experience

EXACTLY!!!! case in point, try sticking a smartphone on the Nationwide Connect family share plan....NWC was a plan that bundled unlim text, mobile web(not full data) and whatever voice plan.....smartphones are not compatible with these plans and must be changed
Just make sure you keep your existing plan. Im still sporting an Alltel plan, at least 4 years old, and three phones ago.

Perhaps I am being over critical but so what if we keep our current pricing, it's the data that is changing. It does not say your data will not be tiered at 2gb for the same price.
Tired of high prices and the bullcrap from sprint and htc i returned two evo 4g phones today and cancelled my service. maybe one day they will see that people want a phone that belongs to them and they can customize. back to tomobile for me.
Haters gonna hate.

i just went on tmos site and saw 500 min + unlimited texting and data for $50.
if you go the off contract route you can get unlimited calling, text, and data for $70.
not bad. i believe the on contract plan throttles you off of hspa+/3g after 2GB and the off contract throttles you after 5GB. the $70 plan is pretty sweet if you buy a hspa+ $200-300 phone on ebay.
Good luck with your reception, T-Mobile has rather sparce reception here.
LOL, I was talking to a Sprint rep yesterday and I asked him "off the record" what kind've phone he uses (Evo) if it was rooted (it is, and he recognized my user name from here) and what he thought of Sprint basically telling the courts that said we can do whatever we want to our phones, knowingly voiding the warranty as is our choice, and he agreed... lol
dude that said haters gonna hate.....i dont hate i just dont like being screwed, you just say that because you work for sprint..i have 2 tmo touch pro 2. basically the closest i could get to the current service i have with tmo which is $150 a month cost me $260 a month with sprint and they wanted $30 more to be able to use usb tethering and $20 a month for premium data.then they tacked on $20 more a month for a 3rd line fee for the broadband card i have **** all that noise that its free with tmobile

I just left tmo for sprint.. Cheaper I dont think so... 3 lines with tmobile and there unlimited data was around the same price until I dropped my internet at home stopped using wifi calling and was throttled 2 weeks.into the month... Sprint is a little slower but alot faster then being throttled half a month...just my 2 cents...btw im In an area where the both have good signal so that didnt play into my decision...

I don't understand how your bill is that high!
1. My bill is roughly $75 a month for 450 Lan unlimited, though I have a corporate discount if 25%.
2. Root your phone for wireless tethering.
3. So that means for me even with two lines that's only $150 a month.
I could understand though if you don't use your phone often. I average 20gb a month so $75 a month for extreme data, over 6,000 texts, and a lot of calls is worth it to me.

High prices?
Oh like Verizon and At&t?
T-Mobile's prices are the same as Sprint's but good luck with signal.
I see nothing here but baseless whining.
P.S. What does HTC have to do with any of this?

Did you expect to find sympathy on the Internet? I bet you were very unpleasently surprised.
Sent from somewhere over the double rainbow.
My only gripe with Sprint is having to pay for "4g" when I have no hope of ever seeing 4g.
I am on sero and had to upgrade to sero premium to use the Evo...plus another $10/mo for "4g" data...which will likely reach my area a week after the apocalypse.
Went from $34/mo for 500/unlimited everything to $54 for the "privilege" of using the Evo. Ah well...still cheap as hell, i guess.
