If I was upgrading now, and couldn't wait until later this year, I would pick the Nexus, simply because of the development opportunities. Razor is sweet, I like the HTC Rezound too, but the Nexus was built for rooting and Romming, etc. And I am a fan of Samsung phones...later this year, when I am eligible for my upgrade, I'm hoping the GSIII will be an option as well. The GSII is my favorite device on the market right now.

My wife picked up a Razr Maxx a week ago. Actually I think it's a nice unit. Some of the V-bloat, like games can be uninstalled (she's not a big Madden 12 fan. LOL). The Verizon stuff can be "hidden" from appearing in the app drawer.
Motocast seems to be a nice feature, with the Moto program on our desktop she can access shared folders on the PC with her phone over wi-fi or 3G/4G from anywhere.
Smart Actions is similar to a Tasker app but with a graphical UI. You have Triggers and Actions. Very easy to use. We set up one so that when she leaves work to drive home, any incoming phone call or text message, Voice anounces the callers name and sends an Auto reply txt message that says, "I'm driving right now. I'll get back to you ASAP".
The battery is a monster. She fiddled with the phone all day Sat and still had 60% that night. We only have 3G service right now where we live but when battery sucking 4G is available I'm sure the extra mAh will come in very handy, especially as the phone ages.

well discontinued support is misleading in a way...source code will still be pushed and available for developers
basically they are just not "officially" calling it a supported phone because of the proprietary files for the radio/lte that they do not have the rights too (google that is) and because of that they feel they cannot truly support it
but the status quo in regards to source roms and the like wont change

Might wanna do your research. They said that for ALL CDMA bases Nexus devices, the nexus one, the nexus s 4G, the LTE Galaxy Nexus and the LTE Motorola Xoom.
The only thing they aren't supporting is end users building AOSP for it. Google themselves will still be releasing official updates.

Well the vibrant plus had been announced.

So maybe the Nexus S2 rumors are true.

But I guess the only thing keeping the from releasing another nexus would be Google. Unless Google felt the need to have a larger format dev phone like 4.3" screen, bring back HD video recording and possibly add a dual core processor.

I'm sorry, but anyone who buys a Samsung-supported phone at this point deserves what they will inevitably get.
The Behold II and Galaxy S fiascos should be ample warning: Samsung will NOT support the software on a phone it releases in the USA. The Vibrant 4G will release with Froyo, and will reach end-of-life with Froyo, except for custom ROMS.
Kill TouchWiz already!
Is it really Samsung, or is it Tmobile that delays the updates; or a combination of both?

I like the fact that the new Vibrant Plus has a 1650mAH battery and 4g
This is why you ALWAYS buy phones with the idea that it will be left for dead by the manufacturer as soon as you buy it (unless of course you have a Nexus )
Couldn't imagine how crappy old Vibrant owners who signed 2-year contracts must feel since most people imagine they will have their phone be relevant for at least a year but it's already a "dinosaur" in their eyes in a little less than 6 months

A year is a VERY long time in the smartphone ecosystem, unless you're in a closed system like the iPhone with only yourself to compete with.
I've resigned myself to a new phone every 6 months for as long as I feel compelled to have the "latest, greatest" device.
A lot of Vibrant owners pissed off because of this, but I'm not going to fault Samsung for releasing what's a pretty major upgrade (true HSPA+ and FFC) 6-10 months after the SGS line came out.
Adding SAMOLED Plus would have made it less upsetting to most, I suspect.
I won't give Sammy a pass on the lack of Froyo progress on US model Galaxy S phones, though. They obviously have it (i9000 does, as does this); but is it possible their carrier partners are the problem here?

Seriously?
C'mon, the Vibrant is still "relevant" and anything but a "dinosaur". It's still got one of the best screen technologies out there, a damn good GPU and CPU, 16gb internal and external sd cards, supports 7.2Mbs. Most non-XDA-member types will still love that phone for quite some time to come.
My point in all of this was Samsung denied that they were making a nexus 2 phone up until two weeks before release and dropped that they are making the nexus s; very clever.
Just like there were early rumors of vibrant plus and those were dismissed then at the end of CES it is announced.
So there have been rumors of a nexus s2 and I guess those have been dismissed as well unless they are are going to drop 2 weeks before google's release of "ice cream" a nexus s "plus". Speculative, I know but it fits the MO of Samsung and Google - short ly (apx 6mos.) after the mytouch was made into a dev phone the nexus one was announced with android 2.2. Maybe with the rapid rise of dual core phones and larger screens; google and samsung will want a dev phone this summer that will provide these options (dual core and larger screen) for devs to design HQ games and apps on. Because lets face it Apple iOS is one up on android because the quality games and that is it. Sony is releasing this year a PSP android gaming phone so I can only imagine google wanting their dev phones to start computing in that area as well.
G1 dev phone released Dec 2008
Mytouch "magic" ion dev released phone Aug 2009
(6 months span)
Nexus One dev phone released Jan 2010
Nexus S dev phone released Dec 2010
( ~ 6 months span)
Nexus S "plus" maybe in June/July 2011? marketing wise would take some steam out of apple's typical iphone release date.
Can't deny that there is some indicators of a possible marketing pattern.

Nexus S is not a touchwiz phone. The primary reason of thread was to create a discussion whether or not people saw the viability of another nexus product releasing in 6 mos.
If interested please read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10540297&postcount=15
The way i see it, is they will NOT do this to the Nexus S, there isnt enough profit in it for them

Learn from my mistakes....stick with Nexus phones!

Ok, so I bought a Nexus S around January of this year. Full price from Best Buy. Thought it was fantastic. It was my first "Nexus" phone. But a few months later, I got bored and heard about the Dual Core HTC Sensation. So I sold my Nexus S and bought the Sensation.
I loved this phone at first, but the novelty wore off. But the entire time I had it, the Nexus S was in the back of my mind. Sure the Sense 3.0 looks good, but for a dual core phone it didn't feel better. The Nexus S is faster. I know that Sense uses a lot of memory, and the Sensation was my first Sense phone, but it ruined Sense for me. I dislike Sense because of the Sensation and will probably never pick up another phone running Sense.
So, this weekend I sold the Sensation to a user on this site and bought another Nexus S. I feel that at this point, if it isn't a Nexus phone, then I don't want it. Dual core or not!
LOL thanks, i guess that summarizes what i've been hesitant about
I was also thinking about picking up the Sensation, or the G2x, but no matter how i looked at it, it didn't have as much development going on as the Nexus S
also the lack of SAMOLED is a big no no for me.
the only phone i've set my eyes on at the moment is the Samsung Hercules due out on the 09/26th
Yes, I missed the hell out of the Super AMOLED screen. It was one of those "don't know what you've got till its gone" type of things.
I would stay away from the Sensation and stay waaay the hell away from the G2X phones
The Super AMOLED spoiled me so I hope that Samsung gets the next Nexus phone too.

I think partly because it "just works".
The EVO boards everybody was trying to get AOSP/Cyanogenmod working and bugfree (bluetooth stack issues) and add Wimax support.
G2x also trying to get AOSP working, in a stable fashion. And they're trying to port the LG camera to AOSP. Also bluetooth issues there.
Here everything already just works.

This has been covered ad nauseum, but basically the other phone development forums are swamped with activity, most of which revolves around trying to get their phones to be like the Nexus is out of the box.
Maybe someone can start posting ROMs with features like "SENSE-less, no Touch Wiz, MotoBlur removed, ZERO BLOAT!!!!!?!" and then we can be like the other forums.
I second that, OP. Had the NS4G but then bought an SGSII and jumped on AT&T. SGSII was an AWESOME phone hardware-wise, and really liked that I was only paying $10/mo data for unlimited hspa+. But software wasn't as good as stock GB, and I missed the form factor of the NS. So I sold the SGSII and now looking for an AT&T NS, probably a white one since they went down in prices recently...then consider the Nexus 3 when it comes out
I have to agree with most on this board. if you want the newest updates always and if you want all the apps to work with your phone right off the back, stick with nexus. skype and netflix worked with the nexus right off the back, it took a couple of months before most of the other phones caught up. nexus prime is definitely my next phone, and hopefully it drops soon

Depends on your definition of "soon".
As of right now it looks like it will be released around November.
If you want a cynic's opinion, here it is: The Nexus S was old-hat before it was even released. The only benefit was the ease of unlocking and getting updates first, which sounds awesome until you realize that the initial versions of GB were massively buggy. I'd expect the same for ICS. Add to that the fact that HTC is making it so you can easily unlock all of their phones and the list of reasons why I would want one gets much, much shorter. Non-existent, in fact. I'm actively looking for a way to get my hands on a device with hardware that wasn't dated before the first model rolled off the line or wasn't succeeded months later by a phone with a key feature the original was lacking for a more than sub-par carrier. I've said it before, but to save you the trouble of reading it somewhere else, I should have learned my lesson about buying Samsung phones after the Epic 4g debacle but I didn't. I have now and I'll advise anyone against buying their POS devices.

When did I say it did? Never? Yeah that's the answer to that. See there are things called 'lists' where you mention many things that are all related to one other topic but are not necessarily related to each other. Like a grocery list. See cereal and baby spinach are not related to each other but they are both things I need from the grocery store. Just like GB being buggy and my hatred for the way Samsung treats its customers are both reasons why I wouldn't want another nexus device but they are not related to each other. Does basic sentence structure make sense now?

I think he was confused (as was I) by the fact that your conclusion didn't really follow from your argument. You complained about the phone being outdated and you complained about gingerbread being buggy and then you ended by concluding that you shouldn't have bought a Samsung phone. But everything you complained of was Google's doing.

Refined Galaxy S hardware
Comfortable rounded edges (looking at you, captivate)
Great ROM support, with ICS on the horizon
Respectable battery life
Pretty freaking fast
So yeah, the phone's hardware is dated. However, the Nexus S is my favorite size and shape, and OC'ed to 1.2ghz with some speed hacks from different places, I can't even imagine wanting for more speed. Now, this is all my opinion, but you can land a Nexus S now for a reasonable price. So get one and have several happy months of hacking!

Looking for advice for my next phone

It seems that Cyanogenmod will not be bringing their next generation (ICS) to the Vibrant. While I really like the Vibrant, perhaps it is time to think about moving on.
Are there any recommendations for where I should be looking. Here would be my considerations:
- I like the hardware features (screen size and resolution and 16GB memory)
- I want the phone to have full Cyanogenmod support
- Cyanogenmod support should include a good gps and battery life (both of which are shortcomings for the Vibrant)
- I need to stick with TMobile
- And, I don't want the phone to cost an arm and a leg
Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Nexus. Nothing else needs to be said. But if it does not come to to tmobile, I would lean towards HTC, they seem to be able to at least update phones.
Sent from my HP Touchpad using xda premium
I agree. Nexus should be #1 on your list if you want support and like the Vibrant. The HTC Amaze just came out on T-Mobile and has impressive hardware specs and is on the list from HTC to get the ICS update. It also has a 8MP camera with instant picture taking like the Nexus. I would imagine that Cyanogenmod will put out a mod for it. Though any new phones will need some time to see if CM will support it.
The Galaxy Nexus is a pentaband phone, so even if T-Mobile doesn't get it, it'll still run on their network. I normally tell people to get the phone that they like the best. Not everyone is an uber android geek. I told a buddy of mine to get the Droid Charge, he loves the thing. If he waited for the Galaxy Nexus, he'd be disappointed. It's personal preference.
It sounds like you like to tinker. People that like to tinker need a Nexus device because they'll always be the ones with the most support and the smoothest Android experience. I love my Vibrant, it was my first Android device. I'll probably always hold onto it as a backup phone with Stock Froyo + WiFi Calling, but in the future I'll most likely stick to Nexus devices.
Decide what you care about the most and less about hardware/appearance. If you want a custom experience more than what a manufacturer's android experience is, then go for a Nexus with optimized hardware. There are a lot of really nice, very cool phones out there but in terms of longevity of future up to date use, Nexus wins 10 times out of 10.
Also, I wouldn't buy a device based on the promise of updates. Carriers may intend to update a device, but several things can hinder that intention. In all reality, if an upgrade to ICS doesn't come until next August, well, what's the point? Remember, for a long time it looked like Samsung assumed that T-Mobile would want the Vibrant updated, and it didn't happen. There have several devices through the years that were suppose to be updated and never were. Always buy a phone for what it is, not what a carrier says it should be.
Regarding Galaxy Nexus being penta band, doesn't it mean only GSM is supported in 5 bands and not 3G? Why would Samsung build AWS band in a world phone for couple of carriers.
tmobil sgs2
What do you think of the T-Mobile sgs2? Will it get ice or will it end up being forgotten like the vibrant? Seems to me the T-Mobile sgs2 is more powerful than the nexus hardware wise
Sent from my T959 using xda premium
Higher specs are irrelevant. I'm sure it needs them to push TouchWiz. There is one device ICS is optimized for, and that's the Galaxy Nexus.
1) It's not Samsung that will abandon the SGS, it's T-Mobile
2) If you chase spec sheets you'll be replacing devices every 3-6 months.
Also, manufacturers are going to want to want their frameworks on top of ICS. There's no reference point for how ICS will look or run with TouchWiz, Sense or Motoblur on top of it. You have to go with what you know, not what you think you can assume.

[Q] Atrix 4G ICS Dead?? What will be your next phone?

I am getting tired of always picking the company that least supports its product. I really love the Atrix 4G but I need to move to ICS for security reasons at work. I have waited patiently only to be denied in the end.
That being said, I am looking for a company that not only delivers what they are promissing but activly maintains thier products.
What will be your next phone/manufacturer?
Nexus will be best option. At least it will be updated without false commitments.

I had a run of Android devices, bit sick of constant update crap, and I'm not giving Google more of my money for a nexus after they shafted us.
So I'm going back to iOS for a while, had a play with an iPhone 5 yesterday; it was damn nice. Same size, but nicer, screen as the Atrix, half the thickness and feels really good quality wise. Camera is awesome.
Maybe when it's due for an update there will be another platform to try out.

Thankfully I sold my Atrix last tuesday and currently looking to buy a HTC One X since they are the best deal right now Hardware/Price...
I am done with motorolla. I said screw this and I ordered a Galaxy nexus today. I was going to sit on it and run out my contract but this was the last straw. I am going to pull the phone off the net showing that this move kills the phone. It me moving off of motorala. It means no increased sales for motorola it means more sales for other companies.
I'm planning on getting a Nexus phone next. It will probably be quite more than a year before I can ditch this thing, though. At least I have my Nexus 7.
Wait, you guys are pissed off with Motorola so you paid a premium for a phone from Google who owns Motorola? And who, in all probability, killed our update?
That'll show them your outrage.
