[GUIDE] [NS4G] Simple Root/Unroot

This guide is the easiest way to root and unroot your nexus s 4g. If you follow the instructions well you should be fine, included is odin and the files needed if something goes wrong, but it shouldn't as my 11 year old sister could follow them correctly. READ ENTIRE POST BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS PLEASE.
If your pc doesn't recognize your phone in fastboot make sure your sdk is up to date including thirdparty installs, and download pdanet trial version and those drivers will work. get drivers here http://hotfile.com/dl/92897696/7ae5290/drivers.rar.html
or if your not comfortable installing drivers download pdanet here and install as it will automatically install drivers for you
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php
ROOTING..................
Ok download the files attached and extract them. For the first part for rooting you will need the:
superuser.zip
recovery3101.img
-Ok put the superuser.zip on the sdcard of your phone.
-Power off phone, when off hold volume up and power button to get to bootloader.
-Go the the tools folder of your android sdk and open command prompt and enter the following command: (easiest way is to hold shift and right click on tools folder and hit the button that says "open command window here" then type these command...
fastboot devices (make sure your device shows up, if not your drivers aren't installed)
fastboot oem unlock
-this will unlock the bootloader and you should follow the prompt and accept (volume up, then power button)
-Some have reported unlocking the bootloader erases sdcard..if so when you reboot after unlocking make sure to put superuser.zip back on sdcard.
-this should reboot your phone, now power off, when off hold volume up and then power button to get back to bootloader.
-place the recovery3101.img in the tools folder and type the following command
fastboot flash recovery recovery3101.img
-You should see it say flash ok in the command prompt, now scroll down (on phone) to recovery and hit the power button (ok button)
-Go to flash zip from sdcard and select the superuser.zip and let it flash.
-when done reboot phone, sign into google accnt, download rom manager, open up rom manager go down to All clockworkmod recoverys and flash 3.1.0 (the newest recovery doesn't work for me as my phone can't get into recovery that is why we are flashing the other one )
-All set you can flash other roms, MAKE SURE TO CREATE BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT STOCK ROOTED ROM FIRST.
UNROOTING.........
Get files http://www.4shared.com/file/N5g8Hav_/root.html?]
-download and extract files, we will be using odin, the 3 tar files.
-extract tar files to desktop along with odin.
-run odin and in the files section select the boxes bootloader, pda, phone.
-click the buttons next to each and direct it to the .tar files we extracted to desktop, so....
click the bootloader box, direct it to sph-d720-bootloader.tar ...then..
click the pda button direct it toward the sph-d720-pda.tar....then..
click the phone button and direct it toward sph-d720-phone.tar....
-now turn off your phone, when off hold volume up and volume down buttons simultaneously, then quickly press the power button....a huge yellow triangle will pop up and say "downloading'.......
plug your phone via usb to computer....odin should automatically see it.....click the start button in odin and let it do its thing and bam...all set.
If you want stock recovery too place the recovery.img in tools folder, open command prompt..type the following command..
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Done.
Ill give this a try when I get home....but I'm sure you need to make sure you have all the correct drivers installed...or when you run the fast boo command it won't recognize your phone is connected.
Subbed for when I have time.
Since the NS4G doesn't have a SD Card where do you put the superuser zip?
This will work for the 3g version, correct?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
yes it should work for 3g

I can't seem to get this to work. I have Win7 64 and I used PDAnet to install the drivers but when I get to the part where I have to type "fastboot oem unlock" the command prompt just says < waiting for device > and there is nothing on the Nexus S 4g other than the normal fastboot options for me to select.

Make sure you installed the right drivers....reboot computer, make sure you opened the command prompt in the tools folder as that is where the fastboot commands are located....also it will automatically reboot in the "unlock bootloader menu" you don't select anything...until that menu comes up..make sure your sdk is updated as well..even third party installs..
I want to thank you, these are great instructions so far. I have been trying for days, got my phone unlocked by a mistake, had to Odin back (came from Epic so know and love that system), but it stayed unlocked.
I cannot get it rooted. Used your instructions and get to second part - cannot install fasboot recovery.
My files are in tools listed as recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-crespo4g. I ran fastboot, came up with a large square of instructions, not ok, with command and option. So I tried again. nothing
Then went to phone with it connected, tried to select from card the su file. It goes to yellow triangle and finally get back to a reboot.
I am so close, can you help with what I am doing wrong? It is not rooted and cannot get it to do anything.

How to Bypass cLK Fastboot screen!

I noticed many of you including myself, while trying to install cLK using RUU in order to run NAND get stuck at the Fast boot screen (forgot to update the kernel).
At that stage the SD card seems inaccessible and your phone won't respond to hard resetting. Well I found the solution to restore your phone back to normal!!
Suggest you grab ksubedi's HD2 tool and (assuming you already have HSPL installed)
1. Power off the phone (pull the battery if required)
2. Hold on the Vol Down key, press power
3. Connect to the computer, on the red-blue-green-white screen, wait for Serial to change to USB (if not install WMDC)
4. Run the HD2 toolkit, choose Task29 (this will wipe your phone out)
5. When the phone reboots, hold down the vol again to get back to the red-blue-green-white screen, ensure you see USB
6. Choose cLK Repartition, choose the right partition sizes (150 MB with 5 MB cache works for most non-sense ROMs), hit "Repartition"
7. When the phone reboots, press the Back button on the phone, wait till you get the Fast Boot processing commands screen (If you dont get this, you need to install the ADB drivers)
8. Choose cLK Install Recovery, hit "Install", press "Yes", follow instructions
Now download one of Energy Roms (which I prefer)
http://nrgz28.sylvester20007.com/Leo/Cookie/index.php
9. Extract the rom on your desktop
10. Open up your HD2 toolkit again
11. In the bottom of it, Click browse and select the NBH file on your desktop
12. Reboots, hold down the vol again to get back to the red-blue-green-white screen, ensure you see USB
13. Then Click install RUU on the HD2 toolkit to flash the new rom
Enjoy! and Thanks to ph03n!x
Thank me why, am just about to post something to contribute here
If you have the Android SDK's ADB/ Fastboot, and are stuck in the cLK Fast Boot screen, you can issue "fastboot reboot" from the folder where you have extracted fastboot.exe to reboot the phone, of course with the phone connected. This saves you from opening the battery cover to reboot.
And if you are in the fast boot screen already, dont bother doing a Task 29 again. Just open ksubedi's HD2 toolkit and install cLK recovery.
Finally, after installing recovery, hold down the Home key when the phone reboots - this will take you to recovery. In recovery, choose mounts and storage > mount USB to get access to the phone's SD Card (when plugged in to the computer, of course!). Copy your favorite .zip ROM to the SD Card, and flash it through "Install zip from SD Card" > Choose Zip.

[Q] Issue installing photonic CM7.2

Hi all!
I am new in xda-developers but i've been visiting the page for months becuase is really useful. I admire schlund and munjeni for the really good job they are doin in HTC HD mini.
Despite this chort presentation I have a problem installing the NAND-BOOt version.
STEP 1: Installing LK Bootloader & Recovery
(If you have already installed a NAND version, you can skip the haret boot part, but it is very important to flash the new bootloader from lk-photonic-pc.rar!! It contains important changes for wifi calibration!)
1.Download all files for NAND (see downloads)
2.Extract lk-photonic-pc.rar to somewhere on your PC
3.Copy update-cm-7.2.0-RC0-photonic-KANG-signed.zip and the content of lk-photonic-sd.rar archive to the root of your sdcard and run HaRET from your device
4.The device should boot to the fastboot prompt. Connect the USB cable
5.If your connecting your phone for the first time to your pc you have to install drivers from the folder you have just extracted.(See also here) You can see it in your windows notification bar if you were sucessful. Be sure to have already run haret and already being in fastboot console on the device when installing drivers! 6.Enter the Fastboot-folder on your pc (the one you have extracted) and run bootloader.bat
7.The device should reboot now, when white "HTC" Bootscreen appears press "Volume down" and hold it until you have entered fastboot console again. If you have been too slow plug-out/in the battery and try again
8.Run recovery.bat on your host pc
9.Device should reboot again, now on HTC Bootscreen press and hold "Volume up" until you have entered CWM Recovery
I have no problems until the 9th point ( in bold). When I press "Volume up", it appears FASTBOOT and 3 errors:
ENTERING RECOVERY MODE
1.flash_read:image: failed (319 errors)
2.ERROR: Cannot read recovery header flash_read_image: failed (5120 errors)
3.ERROR: Could not do normal boot.Reverting to fastboot mode.
Finally says, ENTERING FASTBOOT MODE udc_start ().
I don't know where the problem is, I think I 've donde all the steps properly. Please help me, at the moment I can't use the phone
Thanks all, keep going Schlund and munjeni you are doing very well

Hi Adnann81,
I'm having the same problem and can't see how your post helps? I get the same errors when running Harat and simply can't get any further. I'm stuck on:
The device should boot to the fastboot prompt. Connect the USB cable
mine simply doesn't boot to fastboot, just shows the errors.
any clues?

Hi, I have the same problem in this moment. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625638&page=81
How you managed this ? You recover your phone back ?

Complete Rooting Guide!

I have seen a lot of people using unofficial and third-party methods to root, which can result in a lot of adverse circumstances to say the least.
So I'm presenting a complete noob-friendly guide to rooting.
Prerequisites:
1. A computer ( I'm using Windows 10 but any OS would do)
2. A USB cable
3. Basic computer know-how
Part 1 (Getting computer ready)
Download sdk tools (adb and fastboot) from here
Note that in the entire guide I'm using official products.
So in Windows, download the zip and extract it in any folder.
Now download latest twrp recovery from here
The lastest version as of 7th August, 2017 is 3.1.
The downloaded file will be named as twrp-x.x.x-0-x3.img.
Now rename this as recovery.img (this will make our work easier)
Now move that file to platform-tools folder which we extracted earlier.
Also, I suggest downloading Intel USB drivers for Android from here
Part 2 (Getting Phone Ready)
Unlocking bootloader didn't format my phone but taking a backup is still important.
Now go to Settings<About Phone and click on Build until it says "You have become a developer"
Now back to main settings menu and find "Developer Options". And turn USB debugging on.
Download magisk install.zip, unistall.zip ans apk from here
Now connect your phone to PC via USB cable.
Step 3 (Rooting!!)
Now open platform-tools folder and press Shift+ right click.
Select "open command prompt here".
Now a terminal will open.
Type
Code:
adb devices
Now you will get a prompt on your phone. Accept it.
Now type
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Your phone will automatically reboot and fastboot will come up.
Now type
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
[Alert! If you get <waiting for device> right click on start menu, select the unrecognized device and install Intel driver in it. Google for detailed instruction]
The process will start and you will get something like
(Okay ....)
(Okay....)
And type prompt. Now type
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Flashing will start.
When you get type prompt again, type
Code:
fastboot reboot
And when the screen switches off, hold power up+power button.
(
Code:
fastboot reboot emergency
should work but it's effect was same as
Code:
fastboot reboot
If you get something like red state... verification failed... Then it's a good news.
Wait a few seconds and then twrp will launch. I suggest swiping on the first screen
[because letv is almost dead and we can't expect any updates. Plus my bootloader was relocked in my first attempt when I didn't swipe.]
(I suggest wiping dalvik cache and cache)
Now you can just reboot your phone normally.
Now install magisk apk.
Now reboot again to recovery. (Easiest way is Update app>tree dots menu> reboot to recovery)
When twrp starts, go to install> download and find magisk zip. Swipe to install.
Reboot and you have a fully rooted phone!!
Will it work with Le1s eco x509
Will the given method work with le 1s eco x509
Yes it will!
Im stuck in <waiting for any device>. I've installed the Intel drivers , what do you mean by select unrecognized device and install the Intel driver in it?

Intel drivers worked for my leeco le 1s. Ideally, Intel drivers should work for all devices.
I'll make a tutorial with screenshots on setting up the drivers whenever I get time.

There was a prompt for TWRP update and Magisk Update.
After it has started showing Orange State instead of Red State.
The phone got rebooted and all installed apps were deleted.
Xposed got uninstalled.
Playstore, Googlemaps got unistalled.
Camera is working.
Calling is working.
Now it shows Orange State.
Is it safe.
Can we bring it to red state?
As per this link
https://www.androidauthority.com/verified-boot-warnings-in-android-6-0-marshmallow-650368/
Orange warning: Your device is in an “unlocked” state. This means that your operating system can’t be checked to make sure that it’s safe to use.
Red warning: The operating system on your device has been changed or corrupted and is not safe to use. The device may not work properly and could expose your data to corruption and security risks.
Orange State seems to be a better state than red.

Hi l used this very step by step guides but sadly l got stuck at the :-
Alert! If you get <waiting for device> right click on start menu, select the unrecognized device and install Intel driver in it. Google for detailed instruction]
The process will start and you will get something like
(Okay ....)
(Okay....)
Here l select the unrecognized device and install the Intel drivers but it stuck at the "Okay,,,,Okay" prompt. Meaning that l didn't get this okay prompts and it keeps me on waiting the whole day.
Secondly, till this command l stop it and power down the phone, so after l power back on and try opening the "Application" folder, then it's not working anymore, it shuts down itself.
Please help!!

Don't power off your phone. Post a screenshot of what exact problem you face with driver installation.

My phone is stuck on the fastboot screen

PLeaseeee help me I have a rooted oneplus 6t. I performed a backup and wipe in hope to clear a problem and am now stuck in fastboot mode (tried to restart, power off everything). Im pretty sure as I tried to reboot it said no os detected, and then I got stuck. I have tried to install the latest oxygen os by manualling flashing 4 files. all tutorials i read have bootloader and other files while i just have - system_matrix , system_manifest , vendor_matrix, vendor_menifest (XML files by the way). I have flashed these files and rebooted only to go back to the fastboot screen. There is also a payload.bin file when i try flash that i get a FAILED (remote: Error flashing partition : Volume Full) error.

Thanks followed some tutorials on MSMtool and go it unbricked ! really appreciate it
For anyone running into a similar problem these are the steps I used
1. Download and extract files
a. Qualcomm drivers
b. MSM Oneplus 6t download Tool
2. Disable Driver Signature Enforcement by restarting your pc whilst holding shift, Choose trouble shoot, then going into more recovery ,select Advanced Options > Startup Settings > and then click on Restart.
3. Now PC will restart and Now you will see a list of startup settings that you can change. Select option 7 ‘Disable Driver Signature Enforcement’ by clicking f7
4. Now switch off your phone (by navigating through fast boot options)
5. While switched off hold both vol up + down for 5secs before connecting to your pc. *Your pc should recognise a phone is connected however nothing will be displayed on your phone*
6. Open device manager from start- Under Other devices there should be your phone (although it will be called smthn else), right click that and select update drivers
7. Browse computer for driver software and select folder with extracted QUALCOMM drivers (for me it was called unbrick).
8. The open the MSM application (run as admin tho) it should say device connected
9. Press start and you download should start- if error occurs or download stops unplug, power on, power off and the plug it again, now it should be fine.
10. Wait for download to finish and then your phone should be rebooted
