Hey guys,
Its been a while since ive messed with my defy. Im looking to change my rom, but all this kernel talk has got me a bit confused. Here is my current setup.
My Defy Currently:
Android: 2.3.4
Rom: MS2Ginger2.0
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-g15cc991 [email protected] #1
All im trying to do is put another rom at my phone. Currently, im thinking of trying MIUI. Anyways, ive been reading that they only support froyo or certain gb kernels (usually below 2.3.6 i believe).
At the moment, im looking at installing MIUI pickachu edition. Can I just boot into CWM (2ndint), and run the zip of my SD?
Any input is appreciated. Thansk
Absolutely! I've been flashing all kinds of stuff onto my defy and have had no problems at all, any rumours you have heard or read are just that... RUMOURS! Just go ahead and flash the rom, chances are it'll work, and if it doesn't you should have a backup of your previous one anyway!

Im just a bit reluctant to flash alot because I remember bricking my defy every other day when it was first released. It would take hours to try get it back running (my pc is really old and slow). ive been putting up with MS2ginger2.0 for a while, but the sluggishness and the random reboots have been getting to me.
I guess ill try it when I get home.
ah, i feel for ya man. but I'm afraid its the only way you can fix this.

?? How can you say that... You didn't take the time to ask him if he's a Defy (green or red lens) owner, because I'm sure he isn't a Defy+ one and you told him : don't worry there is no problem of compatibility, all you heard or read is only remours !!!...
So, if he brick his phone hope you'll donate to him to replace his old computer to be able to flash a new SBF... But for sure I'll not donate to you...
I can say that because through extensive testing that in total wasted a week of my life, I KNOW that any defy can have that Tom. Plus, its almost impossible to brick an android phone... so please stop trolling when in fact, there is nothing wrong with what I said
If you flash a bld 7 rom on a green lense defy, you can't use your camera anymore. It is also wise to not flash a rom from witch you can't downgrade from. My defy for instants had the bug where your in-call speaker dies. If I had flashed a wrong rom they would have noticed it as it returned with another sbf than I had send it with. So if they got an error flashing this, I wouldn't have got my warranty.
Just saying.

You are right, it's almost impossible to hard brick a Defy. But, because of its locked bootloader it's very easy to have a soft brick or be blocked on a version without possibility to downgrade. So, i'm not trolling but you cannot affirm that these kinds of problem are only "RUMOURS".

Hey sutitan,
Well, I would tell you to flash froyo full sbf first, but I haven't tried MIUI myself so i don't know.
But I was myself a veteran of MS2Ginger 2.1 and 3.0 when I tried to return to CM7 on a 4.5.1-109 kernel and, well, it didn't work. (4.5.1-109 is a 2.3.4 kernel)
I would suggest that you play it safe and flash froyo fixed or froyo full and then proceed from there.

...and as for you, sir, I have been through 4 soft bricks, and have been testing ever since I got my defy. I am not going to list all the roms I have used as proof.
It would be best for our friend to play it safe and not just assume that the stuff experienced developers tell us are just "RUMOURS".

Hey all,
Just got a Milestone X for Christmas from the folks, and I have a few questions about it.
Number one, would I be able to flash the latest (1/10/21) MIUI build without messing up my baseband? I OTA'd with nTelos a few days ago, and now I'm on 2.3.5, and the radio's baseband is BP_C_02.12.00R. I wasn't sure if I could reflash with this rom and keep all my baseband information because it's meant for VZ.
Number two, I am familiar with SBFing, but I am kind of worried about trying to flash MIUI, because I have already OTA'd to 2.3.5, and the SBF I have is for 2.2.1, so I was wondering if it was safe to SBF back to 2.2.1 if I messed up with MIUI. I haven't been able to find a straight answer to either, and any help is appreciated!
You CANNOT sbf back to 2.2.1 after the 2.3.5 OTA update, it will brick your phone, and nTelos can't fix it. Until the 2.3.5 sbf comes out, you are stuck. The 2.3.5 update apparently changes the bootloader keys. My advice, if you want to use custom ROMS, take the X back and get a phone without the encrypted bootloader.
I'm not allowing the updates on my Xs. I am running the 2.2.1 with Liberty ROM.
Verizon SBFs will not help either they will brick your 2.3.5 phone also.
Hello. I am in the same boat. I was instructed to install MIUI 1.12.9. Is there a safe MIUI build to install on my GB 2.3.5 version .605 phone?
Milestone X
Has anyone been able to load a successful build on this phone? I have the same phone from ntelos....
I'm sure you've probably seen this but the ntelos sbf for gingerbread has been released. You can find the link on droid x forums .com. (I can't post links yet cause I'm a noob.)
I'm on miui now so it's safe for ntelos.
what process did you follow to get the miui on your phone? I had to sbf mine the last time. I was trying to find out what version of miui as well...
Ok sorry for the delayed response. If you go to the miui.us forums and go to droid x (i still can't post links) there are two main builds available 2012-1-8 and 1.12.16. Those are the latest right now. I've tried both of them and right now I'm on 1.12.16. I think 2012-1-8 is supposed to be more "stable" but I haven't really noticed much of a difference.
To flash them you'd follow the regular instructions for a clean rom flash. I'd recommend sbf. Boot into recovery, do a reset, wipe cash and dalvik. And lastly install the file from zip.
Oh and for other roms I've also tried liquid Gingerbread which you can find on liquidsmoothroms .com. The latest build (3.2 i think) will work for your device as well. I like miui better but liquid gingerbread is closer to the stock android but without motoblur.

and let me know if you need more detailed instructions. I don't know how much you already know. I hate those people who post vague instructions and assume everyone will follow them.
thanks!!
if you could please post more detailed instructions, I tried to follow the others but i either ended up with the wrong rom, or it was corrupted.. I did manage to sbf the phone back, but again if you could please post how you did your load of custom rom. If you want to email me instead of having to post links here you can do that [email protected] thanks!!
I sent you a doc with more detailed instructions and links!!!
I really appreciate the help!! I will try it tomorrow evening...

Could you send the instructions to cadlespam at gmail dot com? This is for installing MIUI on an nTelos Milestone X with GB 2.3.5, correct?
I am preparing to move my defy to CM7.2 (or any custom rom) and I am currently stuck on Android 2.1.
I've read and researched everything about flashing and backup and what not... What I understand is:
1. If I flash a full SBF of a Android 2.2.x ROM, I won't be able to downgrade (I don't really need to as I am out of warranty anyways)
2. If I flash a FIXED SBF of 2.2.x or 2.3.x, I will need to also flash a nandroid backup. The problem is that I cannot find a pair of these to download (given all of the mediafire/etc links are now dead).
3. I really need a 2.3.x kernel to go to CM7 or CM9, most (all?) of these won't let me downgrade back to 2.2 (which if fine provided the 2.3.x stock rom I flash is rootable and will let me do wifi tethering).
My defy is green lens US Tmobile with Blur. I would probably be totally happy with a non-blur 2.2 or better rom. My motivation for this is that I need some apps that are 2.2+ :/
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!!!

Yep what you told is pretty much correct! Just make sure you flash the correct SBFs (since it is greenlens).. And you may request to whoever uploaded to reupload the files.
For point 3.) CM7 and CM9 are available for Froyo kernel too.(And those are more frequently updated) So you can do a 2.2 SBF flash.
Moreover should you flash a fixed SBF you can always downgrade...
Happy flashing
you are awesome at answering my questions again! thanks =)
I now remember that CM7 + 9 can work with the froyo kernel, is there any reason to go to GB? I want to take this step by step... first is to get a working 2.2 version (deblured, since I am out of the country and had problems getting blur to reregister last time).
is there really any reason to go back to 2.1 if I go to 2.2?
i'll go beg on the ROMS thread to see if I can get one. Thanks!
Since you have a green lens (SOC) you should stay on the Froyo kernel. Do not go with the Gingerbread kernel because you won't be able to use your camera (except for the Greenbread mod, if I'm not mistaken, but you should stay away from it since it's a fix for a problem not an improvement).
I don't see any reason to go back to 2.1, especially because 2.2 was officially released and is covered by warranty. Since using ICS I won't even go back to 2.3 .

Ya even I feel the same! Since it is green lens better not go to GB. What is the need when you have so many option of ROMs (just get an awesome CM7 nightly or CM9!)..
So now all I need to do is find a good deblured android 2.2 SBF =)
gday, Been trolling site for ages, and now I need help.
I have had cm7 installed for months now, and all was ok until today. I turned the phone on and it stuck at google screen.
I have googled and tried various things all of which I don't understand and have probably made it worse.
If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

btw if you going to through it then why not donate it to one of the devs as they might use it to experiment on it..
I replied to you in the other thread, if you don't want it I would take it.
Havent given up yet as i would like to give the phone to my son, if i ever get it going again. charging mcguyver at the moment. and thanks for replying fellas I appreciate it because i havent a clue.
ps smeg i have pm'd you but it doesnt seem to be working
Sainyam I have flashed many sbfs and i have made it worse
righto have this sbf flashed and working JDGC_U6_2.13.0.sbf\JDGC_U6_2.13.0_SIGNED_USAJRDNPRCB1B50AA039.0R_JORDANAPCNCU_P017_A042_M006_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf
system version 2.13.0.me525.chinaunicom.en.cn
android 2.2.2
kernal 2.6.32.9
build jdgc_2.13.0
dunno if this means anything but bootloader was 9.10
what should i do now
mine is also 9.10
so i am guessing you still have bl4 ..
so try flashing this...
if you dont have Telstra australia mobile..
then let me know...
if it is not installed then try this and then install cm7 on it ....
thanks to the land of smeg,
Phone is up and running, not original but damn close.
I havent done a custom rom because I would probably pick the wrong one an stuff it up again
I will post his directions for anyone else who royally roots their phone like I did.
.
You need to flash the 3.4.2-179-2 CEE nandroid over your chinese ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=123
Then the 3.4.2-179-2 CEE fixed SBF
I can't find a working link for this. If you can't find one either you can make your own by downloading the Full SBF
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts...vice1FF.sbf.gz
and then use SBF Depacker:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11195138
Delete the CG31 and CG39 and that will turn it into a Fixed SBF for you to flash.
Then install CM7 or CM9
make sure you use the CM7 kernel

No worries, glad to help.
This is the solution to downgrade JDGC_U6_2.13.0 Chinese ROM with a BL6 kernel.
Have to use Nandroid/Fixed SBF method as this ROM updates CDT(CG31) and SYSTEM(CG39) to version 6, once a version goes up it can't be put back down, and if you flash a Full SBF of a lower version then the black screen problem will happen, but the Fixed SBF method flashes everything except CDT and SYSTEM (which have lower version numbers) and the Nandroid backup overwrites SYSTEM with the data while still keeping it at "version 6" as this is the minimum.
In future, when flashing ROMs do NOT try to flash ROMs which have higher versions than the Stock SBF if you wish to keep warranty, as even though you have effectively still gone back to that ROM, if the service centre looks carefully they will see that you are on higher Version CDT and SYSTEM which means that you must have been messing around with ROMs.
okay so iv had my tab for awhile now and had no need to root it since i used my phone for everything. iv been playing around on android for a bit now and before my milestone i had fun with windows mobile. so please do flame me as dumb and that i didnt look first. i see the bible for our tabs and that the root method doesnt work now. i used heimdall to flash a stock rooted ver of froyo and now it boots but i cant get past the activation screen. yes i have dont the vol up once vol down twice thing. it wont work and just sits on the screen. i can get past it. so now im about to go all the way back to stock and start over. if someone who is more familiar with the fourms then i am can post the links and steps i need to do to get back to a rooted tab that would be great and id be forever thankful. from then on im ok i bought that bootstrapper from the maket to save me time (plus i enjoy giving money to those who work hard for my free entertainment) oh btw should have said it first. i have the vzw i800 tab. thanks so much folks i really just want a working tab again. oh one last thing i have cm9 running ony my phone and love it...whats everyones thoughts on it for the tab?
once again thank you
so i get it this was a tall order and after getting everything working last night im up and runnning with a cwr rooted and on froyo....i wanna jump up to hc or cm9, or some kind of ics but i dont see much and the two i looked at and tried, the dl links are broke...so can anyone point me to the links of working hc or ics for a vzw tab please
really? no one?

i guess at this point i just need to make it ext 4. what vzw kernel is best for this? thanks for the replay
You don't need to make it ext4, you need a custom recovery so can flash ICS using CWM. The ICS zip will repartition and reformat anyway, so you have no need of converting to ext4.
You need a kernel with custom recovery (version 3.x or greater).

im good then i have cm on it and i think its 3.0 i tried flashing 5.x with rom manager and t started acting funny till i rebooted the recovery. i tried to install cm9 but it told me there was a problem with the package and gave me a code 7 i think. maybe it was a bad dl. ill try and redownload right now and try again. the first time i did everything manually but this time i was lazy and bought the bootstapper. i should be good right? thanks for your help.
i just re dl it and checked the md5. everything was fine. tried to install it and gave me the same thing. error in sd card/cm9 blah blah blah.zip (status 7) this is the step im having problems with

Maybe the GSM one?

going to that site now. i hope it works. im kind of pissed off. every rom i try the dl link is broken or it doesnt flash. im back to stock re rooted and did the bootstrap. i just wanna get off of froyo at this point.
sorry if I am leading you on a chase.
I am not a CDMA user, that is why I don't really know where you should get your CDMA build.
But I found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24986629&postcount=756
Go there, and find on 2nd line that says Alroger's Downloads.
That points to Alroger's external site.
He has a P1000CDMA build of the "TE4M version of CM9"
That will be your best bet.
jt1134 is also a TE4AM dev I think, or at least lots of his code in it.

no your not leading me to anywhere bad. its just a lack of upkeep on a old deivce its just harsh. im on that site you told me about and im finding a lot. im thankful youre helping me with this. do you know why im getting a error code (status 7) any and everytime i try flashing cm9? this is the nly things that stands in my way
from what I understand, error 7 is when the device you are flashing is not supported by the package.
Say earlier you tried to flash a p1000 rom into a cdma device.
I am almost convinced that if you get the right package, namely the one for cdma or "p1c" build, you should be able to flash it.
jt1134 is the most knowledgeable on CDMA CM9 builds.
yeah im on p1c builds and cdma builds....do you think its because im trying to go from froyo right to ics with out gb? should i flash cubbed in heimdall (3.2.x) before going to ics? or does it not matter on this device?
once again im so thankful for your help
which CWM version you have?
Apparently you need to have the latest 5.x.x ?
3.0...damn i didnt even think of that and i sould have thats whats going on with the photon right now. trying now thanks
that worked! thanks for the help
Hey guys, Im going to try and explain my situation as best I can. Im not a newb to rooting, etc, but I am no means an expert like most of you. So, with that said, here I go...
I had my Acer A500 rooted on honeycomb when I first bought, when it first came out. I then tried to do the OTA update of ICS many months back with no luck as it gave me the Triangle of death thing when it tried to install it. However it broke my root anyways even though ICS never installed. The weird thing though is that I finally realized my build version stated I was on ICS, but my Android version showed I was running 3.2.1 honeycomb!!!
Yesterday, I finally got fed up and spent hours searching this forum and others trying to find a solution.
On this page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560), I tried flashing many of the full ROM's and update package ROM's and finally found one that worked under the update package...this one specifically (Acer_A500_7.014.16_041.206.01_COM_GEN1: ftp://94.23.233.147/Tablets/A500/Ace...1_COM_GEN1.zip). My tab booted and seems to be working fine and running 4.0.3 now.
So with all this said, my question to you Android Exerts...what the heck happened? How was I running an ICS build, but on honeycomb? Even though I flashed an update package, do I have a full ICS or do I need to flash a full ROM now?
If I need to flash a full ROM, which one should I do from the first link above?
I am also attaching a screenshot of my Acer tab to show you what Im running.
Please help and thank you to all in advance.
Anyone? I would really appreciate some help/feedback from you genius android guys.
Well, from the looks of things you are now on stock ICS....
To flash a rom ics/jb from here, u need to nvflash the unlocked boot loader package, which will include a custom recovery...
Most custom roms are pre-rooted so u won't need to worry about that...
Head over to civatos boot loader thread for a guide and d/l links
It can be a rather complex process but if u follow the guide to the letter, u shouldn't have any probs...
Go thru steps 1-4 first and then carry on to the actual flashing process.
There are auto-tools u can use...apxFlash Tool or afterOTA but I prefer the good old manual nvFlash method,
You will need drivers and your cpuid - see the guide in my sig if u need further info
Be aware that if u muck this up, u may end up bricked and lately there's been a lot of this....worst case scenario-fried m/board!!
Most folk flash with no troubles at all...the other 5%.....well......
There are some gr8 roms to choose from.....flexreaper, cm10 are my faves...but really, all the custom rooms here are fantastic and well supported.
If u need any further help feel free to ask!
And good luck
