AromaUI - can someone explain in plain english? - G2 and Desire Z General

I don't get what AromaUI is. The website's description is written in awful English, and that Chuck Norris reference just makes things worse.
Can someone please do a simple short explanation without any Chuck Norris/Bruce Lee/whatever jokes?

Its like a customisable installer. When installing a rom you get different selections, for example in the runnymede AIO rom for Desire, you can choose if you want the sense 3.0 or 3.5 camera, while installing the rom in recovery

Thanks! Customizable ROM Installer - that should be written on the project's page. The page is too ambiguous to understand!

How do you add and switch between themes?

Could someone explain to me how to do this? Right now I'm running the max manilla 2.5 rom. It's the first rom I've ever flashed and I haven't done much to my phone after that. I'd like to try out the dusk evo 2.5 theme but there are no instructions on how to install or how to change to it once you do have it. So if anyone has any insight on how this is done, please help me out.

There are two "kinds" of themes.
- In the WM Settings / Home menu, you can select from traditional themes for your devices. These themes change the background colors, taskbar colors, etc.
- Many people have made custom packages that change more than just the basics - they also add new icons, and often completely take over the device. I believe the evo is one of these. There are instructions on each thread as to how to install, but most of them are simply one or more '.cab' files that you copy to your device and then install.
Or you can burn in a ROM that has the theme cooked in. There is an EVO ROM, I believe.
So I can't use the dusk them with my current rom?

It depends on your current ROM. I believe Dusk requires Sense 2.5.
I tried dusk on my Stock WM 6.5 (sense 2.1) and it did not work, as I recall. It is far better to burn a ROM; that way you know it will work.
But go head and try, you can always recover with a hard reset. Go to the Dusk thread and read how to install it there.
Yes, the ROM I'm using now does have sense 2.5. I'm a little confused about the word EVO in the title.

If you mean the ROM Forum, I think EVO is the name of the ROM, which uses the Dusk theme.

Plain Android

Just got my Desire Z today & as much as i love it I hate sense. I'm using ADD.Launcher atm to try & hide it but I still get there crappy apps.
So my question is, which is the best ROM to flash my phone to get to Vanilla Android?
Thanks in advance

cyanogenmod rom... Its amazing... has probably the most support cause there are soo many users
Try Cyanogen. Check out the thread in the G2 dev forum, where there's loads of activity (the thread on the DZ side is pretty dead).
I've used Cyanogen before on my G1 & its good but it never felt like stock to me. Just wondering is it possible to flash the G2 Rom onto the Desire Z?

According to Cyanogen it's still not a totally stock build. But if you use gfree to get full radio S-OFF, you should be able to flash the G2 ROM. Do not try this with just S-OFF from the engineering hboot.

'Radio S-OFF' *confused look on face* I am very confused as to what you mean.
What is 'Radio S-OFF'? And what's 'engineering hboot'? Think I need to read up a bit more before I even consider rooting this device, if you could point me towards the best place to start I would be greatfull!
Edit:Spelling errors lol

I have not seen stock Android running, only with Sense on my Desire Z, and I've not been able to find a simple list of what specific features Sense has added over vanilla.
Could someone point me to somewhere which might tell me whether I might prefer vanillia Android, as I'd hate to switch to an otherwise better ROM only to find lots of features that I liked have suddenly vanished...

If you look through the dev forum, you will find lots of custom ROMs. There are some custom ROMs based on the stock G2 ROM, and you may want to try one of those our (or possibly more than one of those).
What you need to do is to get permanent root on your phone (I recommend using the "rage" method, documented in the dev forum). Then you need to get S-OFF (Security Off) so that you can flash unsigned (i.e. custom) ROM images.
Originally there was a sort-of S-OFF using an "engineering" version of the bootloader. This was ok but kinda risky. We now have a much safer method, described in the stickes on the dev forum, using a program called "gfree". It now is clear you haven't used the engineering hboot, so just forget I ever mentioned that lol.
What I recommend you do is read up on "rage" and the new "gfree" S-OFF, read some more, ask questions if you're not sure, then only finally once you're clear, go ahead and do those procedures. Before you try another one, install ROM Manager from the Market, use it to flash Clockwork Recovery (it's an option inside ROM Manager), and then use it to do a full backup of your ROM - so that will mean if you don't like the new ROM you can very easily restore to what you have now.

You'll lose all the HTC apps. So if you like any of them, maybe you won't like a stock Android ROM ?
Have a look at HTC's spec sheet on the DZ, which does list all their add-on apps and widgets too, that should give you an idea - http://www.htc.com/uk/product/desirez/specification.html
But you could always do a Nandroid backup of what you have now, flash a new ROM to try it, then you can easily go back if you don't like it.

This.
Also want to point out that HTC's enhancements go beyond the apps, rosie-launcher and the widgets...
The T9-based dialler is theirs, as is the camera, the deskclock (with world cities), the music player, etc...
Oh and lots of little things like the icons/black statusbar etc.
I generally don't like having to use Sense, but I wish Google would up their game with regards to the dialler and camera especially. They're just terrible at the moment (which is why Cyanogen went to the trouble of practically making his own camera app).
Hopefully for Honeycomb...

I have to say that I'm a Sense fan. I can't fault it over stock Android (aside from the slight performance overhead, which is a non-issue if you overclock).
Vanilla Android - awful camera, contacts, dialler, ugly as hell, launcher looks nice but is plain annoying cos it doesn't fling more than a few lines, you don't get the Sense weather animations which I think are awesome eyecandy for showing off your phone to other people, Sense widgets are all generally pretty, the list goes on...
But ultimately that is MY preference, and the awesome thing about Android is you can customise it to fit your preferences. Try vanilla out - you have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain

Quick question for you, Why do you recommend the 'rage' method over other methord's such as 'visionary'?
This topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390&highlight=gfree talks about using 'gfree' & 'visionary' & seams like a very easy & straight forward way of gaining root access.
n/m: Kinda kept reading over topics & found that some people have been having problems with visionary with partitions etc. Ill pass on it just in case!
Well i followed your advice, read up on every thing & i am know running [ROM] NO SENSE: 11/Nov 1.22.531.8 r1 - HTC Vision (G2/Z) Stock & am loving it!

Yep, a lot of people seem to run Visionary and end up stuck in a boot loop or similar. I've never seen any problem like that with rage, the worst that seems to happen is it just doesn't work (but the phone is still fine), and that's usually because a command hasn't been typed in correctly or an error message came up and the user didn't realise it was important.

[REQUEST]FULL Desire HD TMOUS Nand Build-NOT Squashed or Stripped Down-I WILL PAY $$

I think the title might say it all but I am a T-Mobile US user and I would like to see a 100% STOCK Desire HD build.
It must include/meet the following:

2. NOT Squashed
3. T-Mobile US MMS patched(I have a perfect patch for Desire HD builds that I will provide)
4. English (United States) - set as default language - My patch that I will provide includes this
5. Correct T-Mobile US APN Settings - My Patch includes this
6. RMNET... NOT PPP
7. T-Mobile US DNS settings in build.prop - I will supply these as well
8. ROOT Access with SuperUser - SUPER IMPORTANT
9. T-Mobile Apps(Visual Voicemail and My Account) - I have APK's that I can provide if needed - OK if not included. Can install as add-on to prevent the VVM app from resetting.
10. NO CUSTOM CRAP - Themes, icons, bootscreens(white with Green HTC logo is stock), etc... Must appear to be stock.
11. EVERYTHING MUST WORK AS EXPECTED(including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth MAC addresses)
12. Must be overclockable W/Smartass governer(mdeejay Kernel?)
13. Deodexed.
EXTRA. Would be nice to see a CWR zip of the final product as well. (THE IMG2CWM THAT BUILDS ZIPS DOESN'T DO IT CORRECTLY)
So what you now see is that I want my HD2 to appear as if it is a Desire HD, work like it was a Desire HD, feel like it is a Desire HD, etc...
I understand that 720p video recording is not going to happen. I'm okay with that.
I will pay $50 to whoever releases the NAND ROM meeting my requirements above.
(NOTE: This is for your time and services only. It is NOT for the ROM as that would be a violation of Xda rules and the Android GPL)
If you also want this, please vote "Yes" above and feel free to post.
(Option 2 is labeled how it is because you are forced to select 2 options when creating a Poll. This was created to get a count of the people who want the ROM, not the people who don't want it.)

Major differnces between v1 and v2...
Deodex
v1 is not deodex and v2 is. What is deodex you ask? Well, odex takes your apps and splits them into two files. The first files is let says CMYLXGOisCOOL.apk and the second file would be CMYLXGOisCOOL.odex. The reason for the two files is to speed the rom up. If you want to know how this is possible I suggest you use google to get the full technical reason behind the technology. Non-deodexed would also explain why some say that v1 is faster than v2. The reason that people desire a deodexed rom is that it is more universal and themeing is easier to do. However, you can still use deodexed themes with a non-deodexed rom...you will just have to do a little extra work. All files that are being replaced in the theme will have to have the corrosponding .odex file deleted. The only reason I did an deodexed ROM was per request #13 on post #1. However, I really think that goes against the point of this thread of having a pure fast T-Mobile Desire HD ROM. I hope this explanation will stear you guys towards v1
Default Sound Set Pre-Loaded
v1 does not have a preloaded Sound set on first boot. By not having a preloaded sound set you will not get email audible alerts until you log into the HTC HUB and download one. I have yet to figure out where these files are stored and will continue to do research to get one loaded. My future plans is to create a custom sound set for my BlueTopia ROM once I figure out how to do it. The base rom i used for v2 has a default sound set preloaded.
DesireHD/Z Hybrid
v1 is a true full Desire HD base and has higher res and gradients in all screens. v2 appears to be a hybrid build of the HD and the Z. The Desire Z has a 3.7" screen compared to our Huge 4.3". Even thou both phones run the same native screen resolution of 480x800 the smaller 3.7" screen has some items that displayed in larger fonts to make reading easier. The most noticable place for this is during the setup wizard on first boot. I for one can not really tell a differnce once fully booted.
Shutdown Menu
The shutdown menu pops up when you long press the end key. On v1 I have a slimmed down very clean and basic menu loaded. It gives you 3 Options; Power Off, Hibernate, Restart. In v2 the shutdown menu adds; Silent mode, Vibration mode, Airplane Mode, Mobile network. I personally only use the options that are cooked into v1 and I like the cleaner look. The extra options in v2 can easly be done with other buttons or menus on the phone. Again this is another vote for v1 by me.

I'm hoping it happens sooner than later but as long as that "Donate to Me" button is above your Avatar, I will pay for the time and effort that goes into making the ROM.
I'm a man of my word and to me, paying someone $50 to the person who makes the ROM described above 10 times better than paying $600-700 for a new Desire HD phone.
If you make the ROM, I will "Donate" the $50 to you.

moto,
It's an easy process to convert the regular nand to a ROM-ZIP...heck you can flash it then use clockworks to back it up then use clockworks to "restore" it after partitioning and it works to create the romzip files...just fyi.
If that was clear as mud pm me if you need the info.

- unsquashed untrimmed untouched stock WWE desire HD build
- only useless apps and crazy big apps like quickoffice and reader are removed, also apps easily available in market like flash and voice search
- stock boot animation, stock framework, stock sounds and fonts, stock keyboard, WWE languages, default english, you get the idea..
- all the wallpapers and themes, only themes can be reduced if it must
to deal with the space issue it needs to have scripts enabled and run with either A2SD+ (like dark tremor script) or data2sd ext partition, preferable ext2 to reduce risk of corruption
i had a dark termor A2SD+ running on my classic desire never felt a space issue, data2SD can boost IO speeds but maybe a little more risky
in other words we need an desireHD2 rom with nothing personalized in it

I would like this as well, if it actually runs fast, and hastarin's kernel has OC in it as well, so you'd go with that or MDJ.
Honestly though, shouldn't this thread be in General? Anyone not a MOD would have their thread moved out of here if it was just a request for a ROM.
Let me clarify.. I'm asking for a TMOUS ROM using my patches. Not a Generic built-for-all type ROM. I am a T-Mobile US customer with a T-Mobile US device.
And yes this thread should be in General. Just like everyone else, I posted in Dev to get attention. I got my attention and so now I will move my own thread out of here.

lol, like a cop who turns on his lights to get thru the red light then turns them off again
no worries man you're damn good at keeping this place clean and moderating in general.
I'm with you on the ROM idea, completely generic then added your patches (since I too am a TMOUS user who wants it customized for my network/location) if someone cooks this I'm sure some TMOUS users would be pleased,
since I use CWM though I'd love to have a zip of this as well as a DAF version, I think the conversion is pretty simple.

What to do next... help!

Okay, so after seeing some crazy stuff my uncle did with his HTC Galaxy Captivate like making his home screens 3D, or even getting 2.3.3 on his phone, I decided that I would test it out myself. Now I ain't no expert with phone so it took me 3 hrs of research to find out how to root the phone... and I finally did it. Now I want some cool stuff, otherwise it was all a waste.
First off, I need something to make my theme look 3D like the App SPB 3D Theme but I also want my interface(if that's what it is) or to change. For example, I want it to look more like the Nesus S rather then my touch. How do I go about doing this.
Any help would be appreciated..
Regina 3d is cool it will give you that 3d look (check the market) then just look for a nexus s theme for your phone. Hope this helps...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I have tried to use Regina 3D, but there is a huge lag on the screen..
I'm assuming you've only just rooted and nothing else since you didn't specify otherwise, so sorry if this is stuff you already know/did.
First off, flash a custom recovery image. You'll need that in order to make complete backups of the device and to flash new firmwares. If you haven't got one, download ROM Manager from the market, press "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and confirm your device. This will install the latest CWM recovery image (right now it's 3.0.2.4)
If you want to get rid of HTC Sense framework and/or get gingerbread (Android 2.3.x), you'll need to flash a custom ROM. Check the threads in Development for that stuff.
Once you've got yourself a shiny new ROM, check out faux123's threads. He's got various kernels for different ROMs, and he provides a lower-voltage version that will perform the same but use less battery.
For customization related stuff, head over to the Themes and Apps section. There's all kinds of resources there for personalizing your phone's look and feel.
Thanks a lot. So I need to flash my ROM by doing the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Then I download a custom ROM and install it using their instructions. Sounds easy enough

I hope you cna help me
Thanks and Greetings
If you do not wish to install any of the available HTC Sense Froyo ROM's, your best option would be to cook one yourself using the DSIXDA Android Kitchen. Just load the Stock ROM, and, you can just de-odex it and flash it as a normal ROM.

And I dont think its possible to do this without losing data. Obviously, you can take a backup of apps using a backup app and restore it later.
thanks for the link. but sorry. It's my first custimation in this part. Rom and so on i know. But how i use the Android Kitchen?
There is no .exe or something else
Read the 3rd post completely and carefully. It can get a bit intimidating setting the kitchen up , but, it works fine.
