I'm from the UK and have the UK version of the Note. It seems that pretty much everywhere else on the planet are getting firmware updates and we are not. Since the release of the Note, I've read of other countries getting updates yet there has only been one here since release. I'm currently KK5 (or it could be KKA, not sure which number)
I'm just wondering why others get updates as we don't.

different countries always get differne updates, every company works that way with regards to android updates
You have the latest update for our country if you're on kka if u feel like ur missing out you could always grab a stock rom and flash that.. latest is LA6 or try out one of the custom roms available

Time to bite the bullet! I was wondering when we'd get an official update too, as I didn't want to go down the same road as I did with the HD2 and flash a new rom every other day trying to find a good one. So I rooted the stock rom (same as yours), flashed the Samsung LA6 rom over it, then flashed the Abyss kernal. Much better now! Probably won't flash a new rom now until ICS is officially out.

I'm with you on that.
I have the abyss kernel with KKA. Do you find much improvement with LA6? I have read about a few issues.

i currently have the DK17 froyo rom by someone developer and i havent come on xda for a while. Now I see that DK28 is out. Should I even bother updating? What are the differences?
Its newer and more stable was released november 28 hence dk(code for november) and 28(day of release) also dk28 was leaked by sprint. So I suggest switching over ur gonna need to flash the modem through odin tho. Research.

I don't think the question is should you update, but if it is worth the hassle. Official seems any day now..... Im on dk17 and waiting. I know if I do it now the official rom will be out the next day.

So do it so we get stable froyo =P
DK28 is a tad snappier and more stable compared to DK17. Its still buggy though. GPS is hit and and miss (dead for some people), and screen rotation is still laggy.
I recommend:
1. Backing up your apps with Titanium.
2. Odin back to stock DI18.
3. Get a GPS Lock.
3. Install DK28 Update.zip
4. One Click Root
5. Restore apps
6. Flash a custom ROM (I recommend Nebula, Bonsai, or Viper)
If you do this you should have at least a somewhat functional GPS.
This setup is stable enough for me to use on a daily basis without major issues.
At the moment my phone is stock 2.3.3 and XWKE7 kernel and I have rooted it via odin. I'm wanting to upgrade but after trolling through threads there are a couple of options. Lite'ning 3.2 has just been released as well as SamFirmware post I9100XXKG3 (Android 2.3.4). To top it all off, there is an official update on Kies
Which would be my best option?
If you want eye candy try MIUI, else Cognition is very popular so you might wanna try that.
I'm curently on MIUI and apart from hd video rec pretty much everything works
I agree I'm using MIUI and I love it. The only think that I miss is hepatic feedback

I'm also very interested in the answer as I'm in almost the same position (minus the Kies update options)
dsmaori: I'm also in New Zealand, and I bought my SGS2 from JbHiFi so it's the Vodafone NZ version but I don't see the official update on Kies. Is yours the VodafoneNZ version or from overseas (or from an importer). I'm wondering why I don't get the Kies update. Also, what's the update to do you know?
heres the thing
i have prime 2.1.1
idont have system software update in my settings
when ICS comes out tommorow
how can i update?
Wait for a custom rom? custom roms are nearly always better anyway.

hi
you have to wait for the new prime version which includes the ICS-Update!
Other way you have to switch back to stock and you will lose root!
give the devs a litte time so they can make a nice ICS rom

This^ or for the time being you can just switch to an ICS ROM until your ROM of choice gets updated.
Most likely first ICS build will just be a Rooted/Deodexed version of the ICS update which should be up within the hour of the update being released if all goes as planed.
And of course the update may not even be coming out today and the person who runs the ASUS Singapore Facebook account could be getting fired. , but let's try and be positive!

This true I have seen that happen many times before they are so fast to release an rooted update to the forums before it gets pushed to your device.

I don't think that this is going to happen as usually there is some sort of a "leak" for this to happen and with the update being pushed (supposedly) today then I think we will have to wait for someone to get it and post the update to the forums.
so your saying that a new custom rom will be out tommorow?
another question any thoughts if iwill have to wipe
i cant really manage to do it
i got lots of important stuff on my TF and the sd cards its almost 60GB
Could it be that the Singapore update won't drop until the 12th, 13th who other areas get it tomorrow?
I have a galaxy note on the three (UK) network. My phone (and via Klies) still says there's no official update from gingerbread to ICS.
Has anyone else on three network received the ICS update?
On my previous phone (HD2), I was used to flashing roms, but I've seen some possible problems with ICS on the note and bricking phones, so I'm wary of flashing another rom.
Is there a safe ICS rom for the note that also has the premium suite?
Theres no official uk ics at mo. So chances of a three update maybe months away
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Three haven't rolled it out. You're safest bet if you don't want to risk bricks is a cm9 based rom, or choose an official ics and read it thoroughly to avoid mistakes.

This I think is one of the biggest problems Android faces, we are at the mercy of carriers as to when and even if updates are rolled out purely to incorporate their operator bloat.
I use 3 uk pay as you go and have had ICS since the official launch as I didn't buy my note from them but full retailer.
I used pc Odin and flashed official stock German rom. Seems waiting for a uk rom is a long wait.
Be warned. Battery life on ICS is not as good. There is a potential brick bug if you factory reset
I was wary if flashing anything on my Note even though like you, I was used to flashing WM roms on my HD2.. I'm on Three as well. I used Odin to flash the latest Indian rom. It worked ok for a day then the camera wouldn't open. It would start then go back to the home screen so I did I master reset and so far, so good. At the end of the day, the risk is up to you, I just wanted to give you my experience. My device is a factory unlocked device with no Three branding so would get the ICS update before branded devices. Is yours branded?

Three do not supply branded Notes, which is leading me to believe the update will come as per normal schedule, just like the HTC Sensation XL did yesterday.

We have a ICS sticky, please use that. We dont need endless ICS speculation threads.
I have an SGH-I337 running UCUAMDB that I've rooted, TWRP'd, etc. via CASUAL 527b. Are there any downsides to upgrading to whatever the current AT&T ROM version is? I just got notified of a new version which I assume fixes the package signing vulnerability that affects all versions of Android 1.6+, which would be a good thing.
Thank you in advance to those of you who weigh in.
You'd lose your root until an exploit is released for the current update.

Both posts are correct. You will lose TWRP, and Root.
If you want you can flash just the modem. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43432287#post43432287
If you want the newest firmware, I highly recommend running GoldenEye Rom. It is based on the International version of the rom they just released for the US variants basically. So you will get the new features and fixes, and still be rooted. (they had it 1-2 weeks ago for other versions). You can flash/try GoldenEye and flash the modem in the link and be all up to date and rooted on stock based firmware.

I'm sure there is pros & cons to go back to the stone age but I can't see it!
YOU can have the best of both worlds by...
Rooting
getting a good stable rom.. (many to choose from)
installing latest TWRP or what ever is your choice for recoveries
latest kernel (remember for your phone model)
latest modem...
and remember thats not taking any OTA's
or you could let the carriers control your life.. Heh, heh..
its all your choice!
